Good to know after I just finished replacing the OFHG last weekend.

A common oil leak on late model BMW 6-cylinder engines is the small gasket between the oil filter housing and the engine block, known as the oil filter housing gasket (or, OFHG). The oil filter housing is the large aluminum casting that houses the oil filter and also mounts the alternator and the power steering pump. This issue apples to the M50, M52, M52TU, M54, M56, S50, S52 and S54 6-cylinder engines from the early ’90s through the late ’00s. With this noted, the most common models for leakage are the M52TU and M54 versions. On these engines, it’s not a question of IF the gasket will leak, but WHEN. The cure is to remove the housing and replace the gasket. And, once the work has been done to replace the gasket, it’s not uncommon for it to begin leaking again. Of course, this can be rather frustrating. While the gasket is only a few dollars, the labor to replace it is not inconsequential.
Knowing the problems with the standard replacement gaskets, BavAuto has worked with our suppliers to develop a new long-life oil filter housing gasket that is made from Dupont’s high-tech Viton material. Viton is far more resistant to the heat and chemicals associated with the oil filter housing gasket. Installing the BavAuto Viton gasket means this will be the LAST time you perform this task.
I've searched around and only a few people have tried it with no one giving their thoughts afterwards. I guess it's one of those things that will take a few years to form an opinion on.

Dang, I just did mine too a couple months ago. Haha.
Like you said, definitely something that would take time to form an opinion on.

Perhaps someone here will try one and report their experience in the Service/Maintenance section. I've done two in the past year using the dealer part, not knowing this option was available. Maintenance section: http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?20-Maintenance

BINGO! I can't even tell you how many times I suggested making this OFHG out of VITON! I was actually looking into doing it myself, LoL.
I replaced mine twice on my ZHP. If you guys are doing your's now or going to soon jump on this! We use Viton Orings at work and they are 10 times better than regular Orings!

Did Bav Auto get rid of their Viton option? I don't see it listed there anymore when searching the OFHG part number (11421719855)

I emailed them to inquire...
"Scott - The Viton gasket supplier discontinued those and we have not found another supplier.
Andrew P Douglas"
Well, crap. :(

Nooooooo!
Edit: I wonder if we can deliver/promise payment for X number of gaskets the supplier (whoever it was) might be convinced to do another run of them. Just a thought.

What's the shelf life of Viton when it is not installed and still in its bag? If it's a long time I'd go in on a group buy of some sort.

Viton is stable, probably at least 5 years.

I'll email Andy and inquire about minimum order quantity for a one-off run. I'm in for three or four, and I'd pay $25ea, instead of $20 they were selling them for. Stay tuned...

Emailed them and offered to buy 50 Viton gaskets, figuring we could probably scrounge up that many among us.
They said they were buying several hundred at a time and they were selling well, and my offer to buy 50 wouldn't change the mfgrs mind.
They're trying to find another manufacturer and will keep me updated.

Got it, thanks for checking. And I would temper the assumption you can get 50 people for the OFHG, I think likely closer to 20-30.

Should have mentioned, I also have an X5 with the M54, and the guys at XOutpost (X5 board) are interested as well.

+1. Good looking out.
Is there a valve cover gasket made with the same material floating around somewhere?

Reviving an older thread ... I noticed that I have some oil on the engine that looks like it is coming from the OFHG. I'm going to go with the Viton gasket option, so I don't have to do this again. For those that have done this, did you also replace bolts, sealing rings, temp sensors, etc. or just the gasket?
Thanks!

Does anyone know what the original oem gasket material is?

I do believe they are Buna-N (Nitrile) O-Rings.
Buna-N O-Rings are the most common and the simplest types of seal with an excellent sealing property and durability. Recommended for use with crude oil, gasoline, propane, petroleum oils and water. It is used in engines, gearboxes and also can be found in anything from shower heads, garden hoses, pumps up to an aircraft. Nitrile O-Rings are used as a face to face gasket style seal or as a shaft seal, and allow both rotary and linear movement. O-Rings serves as a packing, or a toric joint, is a mechanical gasket.
Operating temperature: -40° to +250F°
