Just got off the phone with the guy. Original cooling system. Original gaskets. Only maintenance guy has done is oil changes and replaced driver door window actuator. Car has had three panels replaced for rust under BMW extended warranty. Oil changes every 10-12k.

Bought the car at 17k miles CPO'd. Had no idea what ZHP meant or that his car was a ZHP. He says he's not a mechanical guy and has done his best to keep the car in good shape. Says there are a couple of rust bubbles he can see in two places. He's sending me photos today of it.

Thoughts? He's not firm on the price. AW is my first color choice, but should I run from rust and no preventative maintenance?

IMHO, there is a risk with any used car, preventative maintenance or not. If its not exactly what you want, keep searching and wait to pull the trigger on the perfect one for you.

I wish I was in the market for another, but not quite yet. For now, the Mini Cooper S will suffice.

If you can negotiate down more, feel comfortable in your talks with the seller, etc., fly out to it/drive out to it, find a local shop and get a PPI.

Good luck with your hunt for one that fits the bill for you!

That rust repair is scary. Good on BMW for doing a replacement on those initial spots, but I would bet there is more where that came from.

you can be sure of it. and... if you read the fine print, it says they (BMW) will only act if there is 'perforation' - meaning holes. actual rust-through holes in the panels. those would not be 'initial spots.' ;) so if that does not say how this car was treated... i would imagine there is a lot more lurking. i mean, the guy lives in SALINE michigan - the name alone is the death call for all things metal. ;) RUN.

Personally, I'd walk away. Mainly for the rust issues (not my jam at all), but there will likely be other maintenance items you will discover after a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) that will need to be addressed. It doesn't have the Cold Weather or Premium Packages you listed as preferred either in your WTB thread.

I resemble that remark.

For informational purposes, the owner e-mailed me photos. I'm not pursuing this car, but in case anyone else is. 297182971929720
