******** NEW TRUCK/START OF NEW BUILD POST #21********

Figured I'd do a smaller build thread for the truck so here we go:

I had a 2014 FJ Trail teams in magma red prior to this and loved it but sold that off to get back into a ZHP (black car currently). I still needed something to haul stuff, daily drive, and most importantly haul these two heathens around:

Vader (we think half lab/half shepherd 1.5 yrs old)

Venus (1 year old full shepherd female)

Sports are hard to find with decent mileage and no rust on the frame. I found this truck in Columbus with 169k on it and it appeared to have been in a minor accident at some point (driver fender flare and headlight showed indicators). When I bought it the alignment was off and steering wheel shook like hell. Took it to my brother in Louisville who fixed it up. He did some rehab work on the frame rust, painted the tails/side markers/wheels/badges for me, and buffed it. Here's the before and after of that:

Once that was done I had a new back half of the exhaust put on (no pics sorry) and installed a static OE Toyota antenna mount with stubby antenna from Amazon. These come with a motorized metal antenna and the motor is notorious for going out. Mine was fried and I hate the look of long antennas anyways. Also installed a brand new alpine head unit.

My Indy recently did a timing belt/water pump/all belts job for me as well as an alternator. I installed a new red top Optima 2 months ago also. My brother flushed both my front/rear diff fluids with synthetic stuff about 6 months ago, front diff fluid looks rather good but the rear diff was black so it was great to get that done.

Ever since I've had the truck the brakes have been on their last leg and the tires ended up causing the steering wheel shake due to being cupped. My brother got me addicted to wanting to dump money into this as he has an 02 sport with lift/tires/TRD S/C, and more. So I began to acquire parts this winter. The list below is what's going on the truck this weekend:

-refinished OE upper/lower control arms in POR15 with poly bushings
-refinished OE trailing arms in POR15 with HD bushings
-poly steering rack bushings
-new OE upper/lower ball joints
-new OE suspension hardware
-B&M trans cooler (to avoid "strawberry milkshake")
-toytec 3inch lift (coilover fronts 650# springs, boss extended rear shocks and springs)
-BF Goodrich KO2s
-new OE TRD pro 4runner wheels 17x7
-new OE Tundra calipers/rotors/pads (considered a big brake upgrade)
-new rear drum brakes
-new fuel filter
-new DEPO headlights
-Philips xtreme bulbs (brighter white)
-new auto trans filter and mobil1 synthetic fluid
-new black gorilla lug nuts
-refinished OE luggage rack

Yesterday, I began painting the suspension components using POR15. I used purple power to soak the parts for 24hrs, then used POR15 metal prep, washed them clean to dry, and applied the POR15. I let everything dry for 24hrs and it turned out well.

Next I had my other brother hook me up with cheap tire mounting at his work (Mercedes Benz, $40 bucks mount and balance).

I'll be taking everything over to my Indy Sunday and expect the truck back Wednesday. I'll be taking it back to Mercedes for an alignment. Will report back then.

Next on the list is the following:

-new radiator and hoses
-valve cover gaskets
-POR15 the frame
-Thule luggage carrier
-custom metal bumper/skids from a guy in Louisville ($1000)

As long as I don't have to deal with shaking while driving over 60mph and moderate shaking under braking, I'll be the happiest person in the world lol.

Man I love this generation of 4runners. I feel like it was the last time that they really looked liked trucks.

Any more pictures of the parts hung about the trees in the front yard? Preferably with a neighbor in the background wondering wtf is happening

Small update:

Truck hasn't been going down without a fight. My indy has been dealing with rust (expected with these 4runners) in the parts removal department. The underside of truck is a little more rusty than my younger brothers (how, I don't know because they both came from OH). To make matters worse, the brake pads for the Tundra brake upgrade that my brother ordered for me through his work (same ones he has on his truck) were the wrong ones, apparently mishap with the parts sent and not the parts ordered aka not my brothers fault. In addition to that, the company I ordered the ball joints from (oempartsource.com, great website and located in OH) either sent the wrong ones (two passenger side lower joints) or I mistakenly ordered two of the same. I have to send one of them back and they are going to try and get me some type of discount or company credit to their business due to it being outside the 30 day return policy (even though I have the original packaging).

My indy was able to order an OE driver lower ball joint and the correct pads this morning and will have them this afternoon. Hoping this is the last of the issues. Luckily, I'm off work (its my Friday today, I'm off weds/thurs/fri every week, yay for weird cop schedules) so if he runs into anything else I can try and help out. For now, heres a pic of the rust he's knocked off from the underside as of last night. Now you know why I POR15'd the parts that I did, my brother and I are having a POR15 party sometime this year and doing our frames/other bits.

I hate being in a situation where I drop my car off for work and the parts aren't right or I don't have anything so I feel bad for the situation being harder than it should have been on him. Fingers crossed nothing else occurs.

Side note: the car you see in the back ground is his. It's an E30 with an S54 in it........ugh lol. So much greatness

Well, lug nuts didn't work as well, apparently they are smaller than the stock lugs and nearly fall through the hole. I guess I need to source OE lugs.

My Indy is done minus trans cooler and flush, headlights, and replacing of the OE rack. He's going out of town and doesn't have the time to knock that out so I'm going to go get the truck tomorrow afternoon hopefully and leave the other stuff for a later date (probably install the headlights myself)

Well, here's some post install pics with my brothers truck at my parents this afternoon. I still have a shake above 55 mph so all the U joints are being done as the symptoms seem to fit. My Indy will be doing those, installing my refinished roof rack, and maybe some other small drivetrain related parts replacements if they are cheap and "might as well" items while doing the u joint work is completed. The wheels and tires are a little taller than I expected. I may drive on it some more to see how it is but I like the fact that my brothers wheels are 16x8 vs 17x7 like mine. They look great though.

Developed a misfire yesterday on cylinder 6 (thanks ultragauge!) so today I did 6 NGK iridium plugs and NGK TE66 wires. Runs great. Found out both my axles have blown CVs (I'm suspecting the original axles at 185k) so I'm having those and a transmission flush/filter change done next week by my Indy.

My brother and I spent a total of about 8 hours doing frame resealing on our 3rd gens. We did from in front of the rear wheels back on his and on mine did from behind the front wheels back. My truck had much more rust than his. Probably not a permanent solution but it's muuuuuuch better. Also removed the original factory spare from under the car to toss out. Used a grinder and a power drill (close quarters, both electric), then use por15 metal prep, sprayed it down and dried, then used por15 brush on. Used a quart and a half for all of that work on our trucks. Need to get a hold of a 2 post lift next to pull the front wheels off our trucks and do the front end. I'd post pics but you know..........Photobucket :shifty

Time to update this thread as I forgot about it.

I’ve owned this truck since I think around 168k miles, it now has 199,4xx.

It’s been on some road trips, a move to and from DC, and hauled the dogs without issue. I had an alternator go bad and one rear brake line fail during my ownership that was unscheduled. Due to the proactive maintenance and modifications this truck has been flawless. But, I came across a VERY good deal on a truck I’ve been keeping my eye out for and comply couldn’t pass this up.

I should be getting it next week but will update this thread.

This is the last picture Ive got of my previous 4runner in all its glory:

I came across a 2017 TRDP in Cement Gray that I just couldn't pass up. I had been looking for a deal on one for the longest time and this was it. Single owner, 12.5k miles, GOBI rack/ladder, Innovativ HID headlights and fog lights, K&N filter. Flew out to Roanoke, VA and drove it back same day. Performed flawlessly of course.

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/861/43953821761_2481f74a2c_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/29Y3PT8)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/29Y3PT8) by Jacob G. (https://www.flickr.com/photos/26648701@N07/), on Flickr

There were a few small blemishes that needed addressing.

1. scratch on the passenger rear bumper
2. 2 dents (hood and driver rear quarter)
3. I didn't need the GOBI items

To solve this problem, I sold the GOBI stuff to my brother who has an '18 Calvary Blue TRDP 4runner for $500 (retail for both is $2000) and his time and labor to to the following:

1. removed GOBI rack and install OEM rack (I purchased brand new OE crossbars on amazon and had him flat black/clear the OE silver roof rails)
2. fix the dents
3. do some touch up work
4. paint the scratched portion of the rear bumper
5. install my OE blackout emblems
6. remove the Innovativ HID setup out of the fogs (they were burning too hot for the housing) and install LED bulbs from Phillips

All that was completed and I'm happy with how it is for now. I have ordered full rear carpet/set back coverings from Canvasback as well as a center console cover (dog damage preventative). Next on the list will be a Toytec 2 inch lift and some bigger tires when the current tires are donezo.

The TRDP is a little higher than the others. The toytec 2inch lift is essentially a body lift in the front with extended springs in the rear.

What size are you thinking; 33”~35”. I’ve been running the BFG T/A KO2’s and I’m pretty impressed with their performance both on and off road.

That’s what I was running on my TRDP wheels on my 2001 T4R and loved them. The tires that come on these from the dealer are garbage. I’d like to run 33s that are a little wider as well

I can relate on the Dealer Tires. I paid to have them swapped out for the KO2’s before I picked it up new from the dealer. I should have put it in the original purchasing agreement but forgot. I did get a deal on the swap out but could of used it in the final negotiation to have it added in before signing.

Ordered full rear canvasback covering to protect the carpet with our two dogs. All in all a $300ish dollar investment but totally worth it in my opinion. They have a lead time of 10 or so business days before shipping your order out but the quality is there/great product. My brother got them for his TRDP as well.

Looks Great! How’s it working off road? I have a 2018 TRD OffRoad that I haven’t put to the test yet.

Prior to that I had a 2013 Taco TRD OffRoad that was great in the rough.

With a half decent AT even they'll go pretty much anywhere you would want to take a 40k+ vehicle. They obviously have a list of shortcomings, but overall I love the 5th gen 4Runner. So much so that when I lost the last one I bought another

Power washed the underside today in preparation for the weekend. I work Tuesday-Sunday every week 10 hr days so my brother was nice enough to agree to haul up his compressor for the holiday weekend from Louisville to apply fluid film to the under side of the truck. As some of you may know, Toyota frames have rust issues. My 2001 did and we did about as much POR-15 as we could to get the max life out of the frame. Same applies here but this applies in like 15-30mins with a spray gun. Should only have to do it once a year, twice might be the best route though. I’ll post some pics once done.

My brother brought his compressor up from Louisville for the holiday week and sprayed the underside of my truck using Fluid Film. Got everything off of Amazon and split the costs of supplies since he did his truck as well. I couldn't do this work because I work Thurs-Sun from 1100-2100hours and work a ton of off duty details during the holiday season. This took him about 45 mins to do with no lift and just getting under the truck and spraying. I told him to go heavy (as he did on his) just to be on the safe side. We should only have to do this once a year in the late fall but we shall see.

How is your fluid film holding up? I did my daily Mazda 3 after I wire brushed off some rust and POR15ed over it. It lasted pretty damn well over the winter (I do 85 miles of highway a day) except for a few spots in the wheel wells where I will be hitting it heavier this year.

Gotta buy the sprayer and try that this year.

Update on this thing as well:

the GF got me some OEM LED fog lights for my birthday this month. Installed them this morning and I THINK they got aimed pretty well. Went out to lunch and pulled into a parking spot/turned the truck off. as the GF was opening her door (already had it open a foot or more), a lady pulled into the spot next to us and proceeded to hit the passenger front door with her side mirror. She then continued to pull forward dragging the mirror down the door towards the front. I called the local PD to come out and document an accident report. I think it MAY be able to be buffed out and do some PDR but not 100% on that. Just wanted to error on the side of caution, kinda blows but its fixable. The anal part of me wants to go out to the car and clay bar it right now but I can't touch it until her insurance hopefully comes and looks at it.

Other than that, truck has been running great. With the ZHP nearly modded out (at this point its new wheels ($3k+), a supercharger ($5k+), or a motor swap (I'm guessing $8k+)) my focus is on the truck. I don't want to really lift or put bigger tires on until the currents wear out.

Added some interior and lighting things to the truck. AJT Design HVAC knobs and an OEM black TRD shifter.

Bought some Overland Depot smoked/amber raptor style lights. These lights were originally designed to power via an add a fuse design in the engine bay or the driver side interior. This allowed them to be lit up 24/7 which I did not want. I bought a generic wiring harness from amazon and modified it to fit my needs with a lot of help from a generous T4R.org forum member. CH4x4 made me a custom "raptor lights" button that has an OE look to it. Now, the lights only light up when the button is pressed inside, its purely aesthetic but may help people see the truck a bit more.

Also ordered some LASfit canbus LED turn signal "bulbs" for the front and rear to help make sure people dont miss me

Havent updated this thread in a while:

Finally did my first oil change on the TRDP last week. Prior to that, it was dealer maintained. Bought an OE filter kit, 7qts of Mobil1 0W20 synthetic, a large filter socket, and a brand new OE METAL oil filter house. The plastic ones tend to strip out/crack easily. Overall, the oil change took a little while as it was my first time but everything went well.

I removed the raptor lights out of the grill last year and installed an huge light bar behind the front bumper along with utilizing an OEM looking button on the inside. Light bar comes in handy as compared to the aesthetic look of just the raptor lights.

Finally, I had my long time friend and owner of DreamWraps do a full wrap of my Thule Motion XL cargo box. It turned out really amazing and the pattern really moves when the light hits it. In order for me to use this box because it is so big/long, I had to buy Thule Crossroad footpads with Thule Aeroblade crossbars. This set up sits a few inches (2-3 ish) higher than the factory cross bars and allows clearance of the antenna which was the issue. All the equipment bolts onto the roof in about 10 minutes start to finish.

Im currently at work (sitting in my cruiser working an overtime detail) and our systems administrator has flickr blocked for some reason so I will have to post pictures of all these updates later on.

Truck currently has 35k on it, still chugging along just fine/loving every second of owning it.

Going to have some winter focus on the hauler this year. I have been waiting for the OE/stock tires to wear out in order to replace and upgrade. My tentative plans are as follows:

- toytec 2 inch lift (shock spacer front lift, spring replacement in rear)
- SPC adjustable UCAs
- probably going with KMC canyon wheels 17x8.5 0 offset and 34 inch tires
- Alpine Halo 9 headunit and the appropriate add ons (USB/HDMI hook up, maestro kit, Sirius radio)

I had a complete replacement 3 inch lift and a diff drop kit from toytec on my previous 4runner that rode very nicely but I did not do aftermarket adjustable UCAs and I ended up having torn axle boots after a period of time. Not wanting to take any chances this time so adjustable UCAs are in order. As far as the HU, I hate the factory nav HU and it’s interface. I want something up to date, with a larger landscape, and Apple car play. The unit doesn’t offer wireless CarPlay which sucks but every time I am in my truck my phone is plugged in charging so it doesn’t bother me much.

Hey Jacob the 4Runner is looking good! Love the color! [emoji106]

We just had our 2015 4Runner Trail at the dealer for a leaking timing chain cover. Apparently this is a known issue on the newer 4Runners. Luckily it was covered under warranty, otherwise it would of been $3000!!

Just got some tinted Raptor Led lights and recently installed a Sprint Booster. My buddy has on his FJ and said it made a Huge difference. Best purchase by far, it woke this thing up!!
I also purchased the aluminum oil filter cover as I broke the plastic one. [emoji849]

I didn’t know about the timing chain cover situation. How many miles were on yours when you found out it was leaking?

Never heard of the IRD Maf System, interesting. 20 mpg is really good.

Timing cover started leaking at 90,000 miles. I usually do all the car maintenance but this job doesn’t look fun at all. The dealer said it’s 21 hours and they have to remove the entire front end, radiator, AC condenser, unbolt the engine and raise it up to work on the timing cover. No Thanks!

been keeping my eye on and researching replacement headunits for the HORRIBLE stock headunits in the 4runners. I have been paying attention to the Alpine Halo9 and checked again today and the price went down a second time in the last few months so I decided to pull the trigger because Crutchfield's website indicated their stock was low and I didn't know how long the lower pricing would last.

I got an HDMI/charging port that replaces the stock USB port below the HVAC. Additionally sprung for the XM attachments which comes with various mail in rebates and 3 months free XM radio. The unit is "free floating" and requires a slightly different radio trim/bezel which the kit comes with. It isn't painted in black like my stock trim but I'll be having my brother's body shop in Louisville paint the trim to match OE trims. The kit also comes with a maestro unit preprogrammed for 4runner that works with the factory harness/steering wheel controls.

Cant wait to get this in (arrives Saturday) and get it installed sometime down the road after the trim is painted. It will be nice to have Apple CarPlay and a larger landscape/more crisp screen in the truck.

I don't recall how I exactly found out about that style of headunit but I ran across it months ago, possibly when I was beginning my search for an aftermarket headunit. There are a lot more companies starting to make this style headunit but at the time, Alpine was the only one making this type of headunit.

Dropping my truck off with him Monday to have a 2 inch toytec lift installed. After that, on Thursday next week it’ll go to the dealer to have the updated newer style TRDP 4runner wheels installed along with 285/70 tires and a proper alignment.

I installed the headunit myself after Christmas so I’ll throw pics up of everything once it’s all done.

Well, better late than never for the pics I promised to post but never did of the lift and new wheel/tires.

Spent about 7-8 hours today reapplying protectant to the underside of the truck. I did fluidfilm maybe 4 years ago and its held up very well. I noticed there was some very very light surface rust starting to show on the fronts of the lower front control arms. Decided it was time to exhaust myself redoing this. First I sprayed all the suspension and frame components in purple power and washed it off. After drying, I took rustoleum and did minor touch up to various areas that again, had superficial rust areas. Once THAT dried, then the fluidfilm was replied to as much of the underside of the truck as I could reach.

Cleaned up, gave the truck a wash and called it a day. Glad this is finally done and hopefully good for another 2-3 years.

(front ramps, rear wheel chocks, and ebrake used to keep her from killing me)

Idk if I could get into a serious "rock crawling" hobby. But it would be nice to maybe get into some moderate hill climbing (i.e. be able to go up/around/down mountains) and still keep the aesthetic integrity of the truck lol.

Lots of props to guys that do that type of offroading though (I have a buddy who has been into that for years out in the Denver area), definitely takes some skill, balls, and a high level of don't give a shit sometimes.

Badclown,

Great build thread! I've owned my 98 since 2000 and the 3rd gens with very little maintenance will last forever. I only have 277K on mine and the biggest expenses over the years (aside from tires) were the power steering rack, clutch/flywheel replacement, and various suspension parts. Right out of the box, the 96 to 99s with 32" tires had more than adequate clearance for the type of mild to moderate off roading that most people do (not including rock crawling). Upping tire size to 33"s or more required quite a bit of more suspension cost and fender trimming. The 99 Highlanders were the cat's meow. Unfortunately, Toyota decided to lower the stock suspension height in later generations to accomodate more regular folks whose main offroad activity is to traverse the gravel parking lot to their kid's soccer games.

I've been w/ the 3rd gen community since 2000 as a mod over at Yotatech and Ultimateyota for many years but have trailed off so to speak since about 2015-ish. If you have any questions, let me know. I'm not the expert, but I know a lot about these trucks. Here's a few pics of mine. Swapped out to 99 coils/springs with Tokicos, 4.10 rear w/ retrofitted e-locker (not wired up at the moment), Sherpa rack, and True North rear tire carrier (modified to sit on driver's side).

Suuuuuuper clean 3rd gen, how’s the frame on it? I had to do extensive por15 coating on my 2nd 3rd gen (the one this thread started out with) in order to prevent further spreading. Hours of grinding with a wire wheel to include having plates welded in to fill rust holes on the frame closer to the front on the driver side. Was a great truck, miss it, but glad I have a Pro now

My truck has spent the vast majority of its life in CA (24 out of 26 years) so little surface rust, mainly limited to suspension parts. No frame rot whatsoever. Rust abatement is such a pain and treatments can help, but nothing can truly stop it from rusting other than rewelding in clean metal, applying a rust preventative, and seam sealing. Good luck on your new project!

its pretty much a dog hauler and daily so I dont have to drive the ZHP as much (plus two shepherds dont fit in a ZHP). Its always amazed me that Toyota never recalled the frames on the 4runners for the same issues that their truck frames were having. Hell, I still see replaced frames sitting out back of my local Toyota dealer/they are still doing them. Overly annoying and I will never understand it

haven't updated this thread in a while either:

I've just been driving the thing, I believe it rolled 50k a few weeks ago. Added a new Interstate battery (OE one from new was finally starting to go. Truck would need a jump if it was sitting for 2-3 weeks). While doing that I added an AJT beauty battery tie down bar. Also added AJT door handle covers for the inside to cover the chrome ones.

I took my truck into the dealer for its 5k oil change. After completion, I was informed by the service advisor that the tech opened my driver front door into the lift causing damage. This resulted in needing the driver front door and rear door painted (to help blend it in). While doing so, I had some light scratches from an unfortunate incident a few years ago I wanted fixed along with a roof ding (above the driver side rear quarter glass between the glass and the roof rail) that the previous owner caused while installing a GOBI roof rack. Had the passenger front door and front fender painted (for blending purposes). Not ideal but at the end of the day it increased the quality of the truck and fixed some blemishes. All the work was done at the shop my brother manages in Louisville which is the certified Toyota repair facility.

No other real plans for it at the moment, I am waiting until the new 6th gen 4runner starts showing up on lots so that I can test drive one. Id love to get a new 6th gen TRDPRO but I don't want to pay dealer mark ups right when they come out and I'd like to see how others like the new motor on the forums. But generally speaking: the thing is fucking sick. Tons of updates on the interior and the big thing for me is (if reliable) the new motor and transmission. While insanely reliable, the V6 in the 5th gen lacks a little power/trq and the transmission/gearing isn't ideal.
