View Full Version : When is a Gas Cap issue not a gas cap issue?

In the last few weeks, I've been getting more than a few Small Evap Leak codes (P0442), and the 'Check Gas Cap' light has come on more than a few times. The gas cap's looked pretty ratty, so I replaced the cap yesterday. I'm still getting the gas cap light and the leak code. I've reseated the new cap, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

Today, I noticed that the new cap already has a gas smell, and looks damp around the seal, as does the filler area. I last filled the tank several days ago and I'm now at 3/4 full. Is that indicative of a bigger problem?

What should I be looking at, here?

could be a bad evap purge valve or a vacuum leak in those lines. not sure what else would trigger a P0442.

Shawn had an issue with a corroded hose near the charcoal container. Not sure if that was throwing any codes at the time for him.

Yep. Also had p0456. And here was the culprit. Pull the wheel well trim by the gas filler tube. Ifirst replaced the two evap pumps (engine and charcoal can) to no avail.

Getting code again. The gas cap purchased 4 months ago was not OEM. It is not sealing correctly apparently. So bought an oem replacement part...

If anyone ever needs that metal vent hose connector, I throw these away all the time. Pay for postage and I'll send you one.
