Ive looked up a few different DIYs and reviews and I can't decide which route to take
I dont believe my car has a rattle in the vanos but the anti rattle kit would be done for peace of mind if i sided with Beisian.

Can someone provide some insight?

This would be my last step on my short list of things to do, and then unfortunately as of recently I've had the weirdest urge to sell my car and acquire in LCI E90 335 msport... Im just horrified nothing will be as fulfilling to drive as my ZHP.

Its either spoil myself and go for a full repaint, or... sell and hate my self for ever? Lol tough choice.

It's a $$$ thing in my opinion. Beisan option is cheaper, but more DIY.

Can't say I blame you here, the E90 335i MSport is really beautiful. And the power, addicting.

I was at the same crossroads. I have a leaking VCG and got talked into doing the Beisan Systems VANOS seals at the same time despite only having 56k miles on the clock (I still need to do this repair, parts arrived yesterday). I opted not to buy the anti-rattle kit because I don't even have a hint of rattle. I picked the Beisan Systems seals because it's far cheaper than the Dr. VANOS refurbished unit. If my car had a VANOS rattle, I would have gone for the Dr. VANOS rebuild because I don't want to have to deal with the extra work and extra tools that are needed to DIY it with the Beisan Systems anti-rattle kit.

Hope that helps.

I've done both: The Dr. Vanos on my car and the Besian on my wife's car (when she had an E46). I went with the Dr vanos on my car because I just wanted to be able to swap the unit out without the extra work. After doing the Besian kit, it really isn't that much more involved once you have the VANOS unit out but if you don't have good wrenching skills it can be a little intimidating. The directions that come with the Besian kit are very good though.. A quick search on YouTube turned up this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBJL9AkS6Qc

Beisan imo. I found rebuilding it quite stress free and satisfying actually. Just make sure you're careful when pressing the new seals in.

I agree. I've done both. Depends on your skill, desires, and checkbook.

If you go Dr. V, be sure to lacquer the two whatchamajiggers (assist needed) as they will rust.

You guys never fail when ever I come calling, thanks so much for all the detailed responses! I'm thinking I'll opt for the Beisian kit after all, can anyone point me in the direction of what the rattle truly sounds like? I'm not sure what to be looking for, I'll be tackling my oil level sensor and and oil filter housing gasket today and next weekend I'll be doing the Vanos, VCG, Sparkplugs and inspecting my coils!

I just want to be sure I dont need the rattle kit

You guys are the best [emoji1598]

the rattle should be noticeable around 2200rpm and should sound, well, like a baby rattle against an engine.

i personally would do it if i were you. just to be done with it and for peace of mind.

So because of family, I've had to hault purchase of my kit but I'm finally ready to do the job..

In my research I stumbled upon this

BMW DUAL VANOS O-Ring Seal Repair Kit E36 E39 E46 E53 E60 E83 E85 M52tu M54 M56 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JMG9O1O/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_U4WPzb5T0QMS0

This kit has everything necessary to do the job minus the anti rattle kit that I'll be purchasing for peace of mind in the long haul.

Now, do I truly need the soft vice jaw liner that Beisian Systems offers on there site for 5$?

To my understanding, the kit is offered in Buton materials, as per Beisians standard, and comes with 10x as many necessary replaceable parts as Beisian does..

For 125$ + Shipping&Tax, you only get the O-Rings, Anti Rattle Washers, and Soft Vice Jaw thing....

With 60$ (Not including the anti rattle), you get the following (Took this from the amazon product description)

"Teflon seal rings with brown viton o-rings
Vanos Blind Plugs with upgraded brown Viton o-rings 11361433513
Seal Rings 14 X 20 32411093596
Vanos Unit Fit Bolts 11361748745
Gasket - Vanos/Camshaft Cover on Cylinder Head 11361433817 and Vanos Unit Piston Housing Seals When you disassemble the vanos unit to replace the piston seals there is a metal seal between the housing and the covers that bolt to the housing. I had these seals manufactured specifically for the, no one else has these seals. I felt that if someone was going to all the trouble to replace the seals it makes sense to properly re-seal the housing."

This kit was used by 50sKid from Youtube, he just didn't include the anti rattle kit link.

Any thoughts on the contents?

Just looking for some final thoughts from my experienced Familia [emoji1374]

Don't know the other answers, but it is nice to have the soft vice grips.

I went with Dr. Vanos for the same reason - direct bolt-on. I didn't have a vise at the time and was worried I'd bend, break, or otherwise mess something up. Not an option on a daily driver! I will say though that the new unit developed an occasional rattle (only when cold at like 2100 rpm) after about 5k miles. Otherwise it works great with no rattle.

I thought Dr. Vanos was supposed to have new bearings that were supposed to eliminate and prevent the VANOS rattle.

I think 80k out of it is pretty good...Not considering their claim....

..... and will easily last the life of the car.

I checked out DR Vanos web site and it's only warrantied for a year.
I have my VANOS completely disassembled and I don't think the rattle is due to the bearing rings. they checked out ok. I think it's just worn out. The bores are extremely worn and there is a huge lip like you'd see in an engine with worn cylinders. The O-rings are still pliable but everything is worn out. This isn't my original VANOS, it's the one from DR Vanos so who knows how many miles are on it.
In hindsight, I wish I went the Beisan. Even though it would have 143K on it by now, at least I'd know it was my original...

Hmm...one year is pretty short. That's pretty disappointing. For those who want to keep their units, it also looks like they offer a service to send in your own unit for a rebuild.
