View Full Version : After collision and total loss (ZHP), advice for parting it out?

I was t-boned last week in my 2005 ZHP. As soon as I'm cleared to purchase the car back through the insurance company, I'm hoping to recover some of the losses (thankfully I wasn't at fault for accident), and I also want to make sure that good parts go to good people.

I didn't want to post this in classifieds since I don't have prices for anything (nor do I technically have the car back yet)

What's is the best route everyone thinks I should take to do this? I don't know where the parts would be most valuable (to others), on this forum or elsewhere.

Many of the larger components (engine, drivetrain, computers) *should be in good condition to sell.

I've parted out cars before but on a very different platform. I just don't know if with a ZHP I would be better off trying to sell the whole car as is to someone or parting it out piece by piece.

Thoughts? Advice? Thank you in advance.

I wish I was closer. I'm fixing up an '05 that had been in an accident. There were a few parts that I needed.

Sorry for your loss, that's a bummer. What body style was it (coupe, sedan, vert)?

Thanks. It's super depressing. Loved that car so much.

It's a coupe, same one that's in my profile picture.

Bummer. Glad you're Ok. Buy it back, part it out and buy another one that's in equal or better condition!! I love mine and could not imagine driving anything else.

Webster has a really good thread on the demise of his ZHP. He recounts his experience with his insurance company. May be helpful in getting what your car is actually worth.

Thanks! I'll definitely be buying it back to part it out. I hope I'll be able to recover a few thousand from it. Any idea how much the engine (runs perfectly) with 150k miles on it would be worth?

While it's definitely not a ZHP (which I'm going to utterly miss every day), and not exactly the best daily driver, I've got a 2008 M3 that needs some work done before I can register and drive it again.

Good luck!

I'll be one of the vultures that might look into your part out.

Thanks for all of the replies. I'm nearing the end of the process with the insurance companies so I should be parting it out soon.

I have it in my garage and I've done some inspections. Everything on the engine looks good and I imagine the drivetrain (automatic) is just fine too since it was a side impact.

The interior is alcantara too, not leather, so I'm hoping that I can find a good home for it.

Anyone want to see a photo? It's heartbreaking :(

Sorry for your loss man. I know how heartbreaking it is.

Get yourself a replacement ZHP! Plenty of choices out there!

It appears that many ZHP's are somewhere around the 10k -> 12k range from what what's posted in this forum. Is that the general going price US wide for a mostly stock 80k to 120k millage ZHP?

I'm expecting somewhat of a fight with the total loss adjuster to get them to truly grant me the value of the car. They're trying to compare it to a base 330Ci.

Fuuuuuck.

And it's variable, but $12k is what I would ball park expect to pay for a 80k mile car.

Ok, good, that's what I was expecting. Should I expect that manual transmissions are more, less, or equal to automatic?

Facelifted variants, same question.

I'm also asking because I want to maximally get what the car is worth through the total loss adjuster I'll be dealing with.

All ZHPs are facelifted. Automatics are usually worth less than manuals, but I would not be surprised if an automatic added value in an adjuster's estimate because it was a more expensive option.

So, they finally got back to me with a second valuation for the car.

$6854.xx

Does that sound right to you guys?

The first valuation was $5,500.xx but I told them that was ridiculously low.

The car does have 149,xxx miles but this just doesn't seem right to me. Not all ZHP's have the Alcantara interior and that did cost more correct?

I would expect a minimum valuation around $8,000 at this point.

Automatic does in fact add value in the adjusters evaluation actually, I was surprised.

That's probably fairly close.

Any good ideas on how to verify an accurate valuation?

The adjustors are trying to tell me that the Alcantara interior devalues it over the leather interior.

I have to come up with new and verifiable sources for them if I expect to get what I believe the car is worth.

I believe leather is believed to be the more premium option. But some people prefer cloth, some leather. I don't think there is much in it. I think you would have to convince them overall that it's undervalued. Their valuation seems alright, though it might be possible to get closer to $8,000.

Blurr

$8,000 is about what I believe the car should be valued at.

Do you have receipts for any maintenance/mods?

Blurr

I have receipt records for all parts purchased, but there was very little service that wasn't performed by me personally.

My insurance company, USAA, will consider receipts from the past year.

AllState does too, past year. I'll be submitting mine.

Send your adjuster links to high dollar for sale zhp ads. That also helped me make a case for higher value.
