Frankly, it doesn't really matter. As long as you enjoy the car I don't think it really matters about having the latest or greatest. You will always be behind unless you keep throwing money at it. Only real way to get the best of a generation is to wait for production to end and attempt to buy a used late model one. You might spend more money or time finding one but it will be the last of the generation.

This is the way we're looking at our M2. Even though the M2 Competition came out the day ours was finished production, we never would of been able to get the deal we got on ours. The price point is too high. The is plenty of performance potential in the N55 to keep Kristen happy.

I'm waiting for IND to come up with a sale and away I go purchasing coilovers ;)

IND has some good quality stuff but man, is it expensive!

# Liquid Gold replacement
After 3500 miles, the car decided to complain that it is a quart low. Rather than fill up another quart, I figured let's do an oil change.

Thanks to FCPeuro's lifetime replacement, this is the start of the oil changes that will only cost me time to pack the oil and ship out a USPS flat rate large box for $18 to FCPeuro! :)

It is pretty standard for the higher performance cars to eat 1 quart somewhere between 3k-6k miles. Since it isn't my daily driver, I tend to drive it a little harder than most when I do take it out. This could have attributed to a tiny fraction more oil consumption but on the M3post forums, I have seen that this is fairly common on the S65. Even when I worked at a dealership, I remember ///M folks complaining they had to purchase a quart of 10w-60 as top-offs were not covered by the maintenance program.

Either way, FCPeuro has got me covered. :)

# 2018-09-17 Update

I was about moments away from ordering Ohlins Road & Track coilovers when some minor chit chatting with friends reminded me that I had a few resources I should talk prior to this purchase. During those conversations, I ended up realizing I probably will not be happy with the Ohlins on the track and probalby end up with swapping spring rates. With a few phone calls and a wonderful discussion about suspension dynamics, I decided to go for it. :party0030: Thanks Wyatt!!!

The configuration is as follows:
MCS 2WNR dampeners
Eibach 2.25" 400/700lbs
Eibach Helper springs
Vorshlag Camber kit
Ground Control rear articulating spring perch
Bimmerworld Endlinks
Powerflex Street/Track Rear shock mounts

It is safe to say that I ended up paying a little more than I originally planned with the Ohlins but I'm pretty sure I am ending up with a hell of a suspension setup. With the square 18x10+40 BBS GT4s with 15mm spacers, inner wheel clearance would be very tight with the ohlins. Going with MCS and 2.25" springs should increase the clearance so I don't have to change my spacers out. Either way, I bought 20mm spacers in case I do need to.

The picture of the front setup just looks so lovely.
https://i.imgur.com/olCYU5th.jpg

The GC rear perches are being dropped shipped to me due to some delays in manufacturing. For now, I'll get to view them in the garage and admire how
pretty they look.

Oh and random pic of the beluga whale in all of its AWD height glory.

Time to finally update with a longer post!

# Suspension Update
Last month I purchased Motion Control Suspension 2 Way Non-Remote dampeners and the necessary parts to get it to work. I opted for this ultra-premium suspension because it is able to adjust rebound and compression on the dampeners. I figured I was planning to track it and 2-way was also a very good way to dampen tune the car for the street to a very usable Porsche 991 GT3 feel.

##MCS 2WNR Hardware

MCS 2WNR dampeners
Eibach 2.25" 400/700lbs
Eibach Helper springs
Vorshlag Camber kit
Ground Control rear articulating spring perch
BimmerWorld Front MCS-length End links
PowerFlex Black Rear shock mounts
https://i.imgur.com/N9vi5eih.jpg

##Ride height calculation
My goal for ride height was to eliminate the fender gap but not to stray too far away from factory competition package height. Since the forums have mentioned the Japanese market E90 ride height is the same as the ZCP package, this meant the ride height in TIS for the JDM market in 18s” would provide a baseline height to work with. I dug up the JDM spec E90 18" ride height specs in TIS. These are measured from the fender to the bottom of the rim.

https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e90-m3-lim/repair-manuals/31-front-axle-front-suspension/31-10-front-axle-suspension/6QLv4XJ
https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e90-m3-lim/repair-manuals/33-rear-axle-rear-wheel-drive-guide/33-00-rear-axle-rear-wheel-drive-guide/60vSeDg

JDM 18" Front: 600mm (23.62")
JDM 18" Rear: 584mm (22.99")

With a 1/2 inch removed, I would end up at with these specs for the ride height:
Final Front: 587mm (23.1")
Final Rear: 572mm (22.5")

##Installation
I figured to install on my own as I have done a few BMW setups before but not an e90M. The fronts went on without a hitch. The rears were a bit of a pain as the Ground Control articulating spring perch has a rod that requires cutting if you aren't using a 6" spring. Since I had a 7" spring, I had to cut the rod to allow proper lowering. The rear headlight sensor also snapped due to brittleness when I was attempting to remove it. I fixed the error and continued on.

After doing some on and off adjustments to reach my desired ride height, I finally was satisfied with it and moved on to adjusting the front camber and eyeballing around -2 to -2.5 degrees of camber.

https://i.imgur.com/FsTm5pth.jpg

##Coding
Since my car has EDC, I opt to delete it via coding instead of paying for EDC emulators.

Unplug the EDC module in the trunk
Delete $223 from VO
FA write to CAS and NFRM
Change EDC_CIC to nicht_aktiv in CIC
Change EDCK_ALIVE_ZAEHLER to nicht_aktiv in KOMBI
Change EDCK_ID_MONITOR to nicht_aktiv in KOMBI
Clear errors in ISTA or INPA.
Caveat: There will be a CDB7 error that will always be present in the fault memory. The car will not report it in the car screen but it will be there during a diagnostic read.

No more EDC! The known error is shown in the picture.
https://i.imgur.com/c4KnsU9h.jpghttps://i.imgur.com/GnNiATzh.jpg

##Damper Tuning
After coding, I started with rebound 9 clicks and compression 4 clicks all around as a baseline first. Since I wasn't fully comfortable with double adjustable settings I had to research and familiarize myself with what each did. Long story short, I've settled on front 11R/5C and rear 9R/4C for street use. I will continue to play with the settings and see if the sweet spot currently gets sweeter. :happyanim:

##Alignment
With the car being a little more weekend car than a full fledge race car, Wing@VT Motorworks set the alignment to camber to -2.5 front, -2.0 rear with a hint of toe in. With a little toe in the front, the car wouldn’t be as darty and want to follow the grooves of the road.
https://i.imgur.com/rXt12Hmh.jpg

##Impressions
My initial first impressions are "f*cking wow." The suspension is far more composed than I ever expected. Compression was adjusted just enough to be suitable for San Francisco Bay area rough roads. Adding a little more rebound, the car is able to remain stable even with mid-corner bumps. I am just amazed at how stable this setup is on the street with minor damper tuning. I am very happy with this setup and hope to learn more about how to utilize them more!

https://i.imgur.com/BBo4EdSh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/pJceScUh.jpg

##Remaining items

###Trunkliner hole for rear adjustment
I plan to put two holes in the trunk liner to allow access to the adjusters. With a large hole, I wanted something to cover it. I hope to get this done next week.

##Bonus item!
I was meeting up friends at Sonoma Raceway and ended doing 3 DynoJet runs for $80 for giggles. Power levels aren't too shabby and I'm not too worried about it.

I was ghetto. I used a box cutter and cut a flap at strategic spots. I can just press down / pull up for access to adjust my shocks. When I let go of the hard trunk liner, the flap goes back into place with no sign of marks.

I like this idea as well but the E46 trunkliner is way softer than the E90 one. I was planning to do it this way but I like the cover better. :)

#Notes

It occurred to me I failed to post notes about my wheel fitment after the installation!

18x10+25 275/35/18 inner sidewall did not clear the front suspension due to the extra height from the helper spring. The tire was barely rubbing on the lower spring perch. The wheel was pushed out 3mm with a spacer change with plenty of room to spare.

#Update 2018-12-10

#Motorsport Hardware lugnuts
Black Friday purchase! I installed Motorsports hardware extended lugnuts to replace the smaller open-ended nuts as extended ones are much easier to unbolt.

They sure look good!

https://i.imgur.com/4ME0dt2h.jpg

#Alpine Tune
I also purchased Alex's Alpine MSS Stage 1 tune (http://www.alpinemss.com/product_p/fmt.htm) during Black Friday. Along with the lugnuts, I also decided to upload the tune to my car. The install was seamless and simple with Alex's instructions. I opted for a Stage 1 with speed limiter removed and Servotronic adjustment. I also asked him for a tune without the Servotronics in case I don't like it.

Unfortunately, I had a pre-existing throttle actuator code so I am unable to test drive the car. I ordered throttle actuators but they haven't arrived yet from M Power Motorsports. They seem to be very popular and back ordered 4-6 business days. Hopefully, they arrive this week and I can tackle them soon.

#Motorad Thermostat

On another note, I will most likely be ordering a Motorad 880090 thermostat. This is from a Dodge Viper/Ram and it is a 190F thermostat. In comparison, the factory OE opens at 175F. I'm sure you are asking, "Hey Derek, why would want a thermostat that opens later?". I asked the same thing when I found out about this on Instagram. From I gather, the time between 175 and 200F can be reduced with this thermostat and provide better improvements to the engine. I don't see any downfall to this as it means the car warms up faster and gets to operating temperature faster. Plus the part is $22!

#Brakes

OE Front and Rear Rotors
OE Brake pads
OE Brake sensors
OE Brake Hardware
Bimmerworld SS Lines with insulation
PFC08 Front and Rear pads

https://i.imgur.com/8yQCJUDh.jpg

The end-goal is Laguna Seca with SpeedSF in April 20th so I got some time to throw this stuff in. I just need to order some Castrol SRF fluid and I'll be ready to refresh the brakes!

Final note:
New plates!

That's it for this entry. I will update more after I get my throttle actuators in and I can test drive the new stage 1 tune.

That's what I heard. I always wanted them but at the time I had carbotech pads to kill. They should be a well rounded pad for the track without wearing out too crazy and easier on the rotors than most track pads. I won't be able to tell you until most likely April. :(

I purchased a set of rebuilt throttle actuators from Abdul at Mpowermotorsports.org . He is the official North American distributors for Jason of Rebuilt.org.uk. For those that don't know, $720 will you get rebuilt throttle actuators that are upgraded and have lifetime replacement warranty! This is cheaper than $1000+ from the dealership that have the same design flaw that will fail again.

Gears upgraded to superior materials made in the USA that will outlive the car

##Installation
https://i.imgur.com/XWcqD2sh.jpg
The actuators arrived last Thursday and I was able to take some time today to install them. The install was very uneventful and I'm glad it went very smoothly! Overall, removing the intake box was very easy with just different length flat head screwdrivers, torx bits, magnetic pickup and an interior plastic trim removal tool. The install took a little over 1.5 hours as I was very slow and careful in the beginning.

Yup! And the fact the design was designed around reflective properties of halogen makes LED bulb upgrades look far worse. I did also go into NCSExpert to raise the voltage of the rings to 13.7V instead or a mere 10V like normal. It is still low enough of a voltage where the LED isn't overdriven too much.

I wish it was impressive. There is an option in NCSexpert to raise the voltage of the circuit. It's merely editing the trace file. :)

I like the whiter tone of LED than halogen, but you're right, at least from your pics, the more lateral rings don't appear to be as well illuminated. I doubt many people would notice but would probably bother me to no end. You can't go wrong with the OEM halogens though.

Car's looking good, regardless!

You’d think you could somehow either open the housing up and create a shield to bias light another way or for someone to create an LED with a shield for perfect light distribution.

BavGruppe does make replacement rings but I really don't feel like opening them up to deal with it.

# Power Bug
Currently, I have been bitten by the power mod bug. I already have an AFE Carbon intake dry filter on the way due to some outrageous discount pricing from AFE. On the exhaust side of things, I really like my OEM exhaust 4-pipe mod but would like to uncork the exhaust a bit. From what I gathered so far, the stock primary cats are the restrictive portion of the exhaust and that the secondaries can be retained without sacrificing a lot of power. With that in mind, an x-pipe with primaries deleted while retaining secondaries and resonators should increase power levels while keeping odor and sound increases to a minimal.

MotorIQ has a great article about utilizing v-band clamps on both the OE primary cats and test pipes to allow for interchangeability for track use and street/emission testing. I really like this idea and it seems fairly cost effective as well!

https://photos.motoiq.com/MotoIQ/Project-Cars/Project-E90-M3/i-t7DT5Wm/2/L/15%20Test%20Pipes%20Installed%20Vband-L.jpg

I also heard that Bomiz is in the works creating an X-pipe with HFC secondaries and resonators. With IND possibly bringing back the Challenge sport X-pipe with the HFC secondaries and resonators, there are a few options that have HFC secondary cats.

Rogue Engineering Test pipes + v bands
Allows for easy replacement of OE Cat again and also probably the cheapest option. It will also require the least amount of storage space since stock x pipe is 1-piece. Spare parts space is a premium here.
Evolve X-Pipe + HFC secondaries
This is a $2600+ X pipe... :( Looks great though.
Bomiz X-Pipe + HFC secondaries
ETA unknown, probably cheaper than Challenge Sport pipe
Challenge Sport X-pipe
HFC secondaries + secondaries. ETA unknown if IND will bring it back, probably $2k or more

Decisions decisions.. :)

I most likely will end up with option 1 with Rogue Engineering resonated test pipes and v bands so I can swap out for our biennial emissions testing.

I went to the local cars and coffee and started asking people where to go for dyno, fab work, machine shops, etc. Now I have a whole list of of locals... When you ask people at a meet like that, you usually are going to find the talent instead of the hacks.

tell me about it. the 335i has v-bands on the turbos, but the downpipe-to-exhaust connections are still the same old 2-stud-per-pipe situation as the ZHP, and the studs rust into nothing before the car even leaves the dealer lots...

Vbands aren't majorily expensive. It is really finding the right person to do the welding properly. I haven't Jegs.com in years! I used them when I had my old 93 turbo civic and needed all sorts of AN fittings etc. With 2 Vband clamps, 6 flanges, the total comes out to be about $75. Thats pretty good!

I really like the E90 CF spoiler. I think the problem with CF is that its a slippery slope. Here I am getting the rear spoiler...oh it needs a front lip..oh now maybe the rear diffuser like in the pic below..oh what about the side mirrors..LOL

34628

I'm currently liking the Arkym style front lip. (because paying $1000 for a front lip that might tear off is ridiculous) The lip looks to have relatively decent clearance compared to the GTS lip and significantly more clearance than the GT3/GT4 lips.

Yea, they started to drop prices on E9x parts.

The M performance exhaust for e90 is now $2300 for the rear section. I remember when MSRP was $4000 in 2010-2011. The alcantara flat bottom with Blue stripe 6MT steering wheel is now selling for $680, I remember it being a lot more before. Either way, E90 CF spoiler is now $336 shipped vs aftermarket ones being around $200. I'll pay the extra $100 more.

derbo

Yup!

The front bottom is such a high-risk zone for damage that any lip probably will get ripped off or scraped to death.

# M performance splitters
M performance splitters look a little off to me. I always felt splitters made the car look incomplete even on the ZHP.
34630

# GTS carbon fiber lips
These are the bizniss but the ground clearance is very poor and nice examples of these lips cost north of $1000. I would love to have an OE Euro GTS lip (non-CF) but that is unobtanium.
34631

# GT3 Lip
Great ground clerance../sarcasm. It's kinda of cool it has brake duct openings but the ground clearance is well beyond usable for street use.

34632

# CRT Replica Lip
I oddly like this lip a lot due to abundance of clearance and it's a e90 crt lip but the replicas look like ass right now and a true CRT lip is up there with the OE GTS lip in terms of rarity. It also looks incomplete like the splitter since it only fills the center.

34633

# Arkym style lip
This one is nice as it has decent clearance and fills up the whole bumper area. I'm most likely going with this one. It reminds me of the CSL status gruppe lips from the E46.

34634

There is a ton more lips out there..but yes, at the moment, Arkym is the best choice for me! :) GTS is my favorite look but it doesn't make sense due to clearance.

# Intake time!

I ended up buying an AFE carbon fiber intake from AFE right after new years. It just so happen I was looking up the SKU to add to my "buy list" and noticed that AFE was selling the intake system on an overstock pricing of $217!! I posted it on the US M3 V8 facebook group and many folks were able to take advantage of it. Either way, I ended up paying $234 shipped because of tax in CA.

## Installation
The installation wasn't too bad. The only thing most folks should be aware of is that the silicone coupler for the plenum to intake is an incredibly tight fit. I had two plastic toothbrushes as my picks to loop the tube over. I will not be looking to doing that again. Fit and finish are great. The stock airbox cover is a little tight and required some pressure to get the screws to reach the bottom piece. Overall this took about 15 minutes but I heard some folks were having trouble for up an hour.

https://i.imgur.com/1n9sG4oh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/XL7w8IIh.jpg

## Impressions
Power wise. Don't feel any real difference except a little better response under 4k. Intake noise seems to have increased a bit as well. I'm very happy with the purchase considering it was $234 instead of the normal $500 or so price range. Most folks I've talked to who did a dyno showed net gains of 6-10whp so I'll take it!

#Climate Control?
There is a very interesting option I didn't know about called Climate control windshields.

The climate comfort windscreen uses a layer of special reflective material to reflect certain wavelengths of sunlight: infrared radiation, which is responsible for increasing temperature, is not allowed to enter the cabin, while a high level of natural light is able to pass through it.
This reflective technology delivers a heat saving in the cabin of 10 ° C even in direct sunlight. Your air conditioning system can work more efficiently, and your enjoy a light-filled cabin with a comfortable atmosphere.

https://i.imgur.com/TZvp83Eh.jpg

They have a nice purple-ish hue to them like the higher end S class and Tesla windshields. The caveats are they most likely interfere with radar detectors and garage door openers unless they are right by the rear view mirror where the material does not cover. I'll have to look into how to get this windshield and/or if it makes sense to have this instead of just getting a 80% tint film that doesn't mess with that stuff.

In heavy torrential rain, snow and fog. Notice how fast people’s normal tail lights come up but when they brake you can see them from a much safer distance? That’s what the rear fog light is. It’s a brake light intensity single light just to give highlight that you’re there just in case the speed delta between you and the person behind is greater than they can stop if they only see your dim tail lights.

It’s a brake light intensity single light just to give highlight that you’re there just in case the speed delta between you and the person behind is greater than they can stop if they only see your dim tail lights.Thx boo

So is it red/white/Amber/disco? And just one side of the car?

Welcome booooboooo. It's usually always red to symbolize it's the back of a car. Sometimes it's only one inner side but some cars have it on both inner sides for more symmetry. It's really there for safety, not to look good. LOL.

If your car only has it on one side it’s a good way to get practice talking with the police when you get pulled over for a “burnt out taillight.” Ask me how I know.

Technically yes, one side of the car (the driver's side). It can be coded for both sides though, which is what I did. :)

Yup, as others said, its there for safety. San Francisco Bay Area is a high fog area. Hell, our fog is named Carl the Fog and he has a twitter..haha.

The E90 rear fogs actually are dual fogs and frankly I wished we had them from the factory like Audis/Merc/Minis. I seriously think its because BMW NA thinks people are idiots and do not know how to follow instructions on when to use the lights properly. I frankly think they are right about people being idiots.. since 10000% of the time I see people with no lights in the rain, or fog lights on when its crystal freaking clear.

Mods for the M3 are going to be on a hold for awhile.. I moved a little too fast on things without letting my bank account recover. LOL

Thanks JR! Chrome is cool and all, but I love the new gloss black/black chrome look. It just looks more menacing.

Now that I'm about 1.5 years into ownership, I wanted to compare the ZHP again (from what I remember of the car)
There were a few major points that I loved about my old ZHP:
1. Suspension
2. Steering
3. Brakes
4. Looks
5. Sound

Suspension was great in the ZHP but now that I've experienced MCS 2-way..I have seen the light in proper adjustment!

Steering. Hands down the ZHP steering rack is way better than the M3. After I got the Alpine Tune with servotronics update, the steering variable ratio feels a lot more natural and heavier. It's still not the same as the ZHP rack but its definitely an improvement. I will also note that the E9x steering is still way better than the F8x steering. :)

Brakes. Stoptech ST40 definitely made the pedal feel amazing. I'm not sure I will be able to "fix" this on the E9x without spending a heap of money but for now, PFC08s + SS lines will have to do.

Looks. The E46 sedan is still my favorite in MTECHII form. The E9x M3 is starting to creep up more and more.

Sounds. While I love the ZHP with TSE3, the E90 has now taken over as my favorite noise thanks to crazy induction noises from the front, and mean noises from the exhaust. Can't argue with a V8. :rofl

Would I ever be back in a ZHP? The more I think about it, the more I should've kept the car to be a daily and bought an M3 to match it. But the Civic is cool for not caring about it and being a workhorse.

The black grilles look great. Chrome is really nice on other colors, but white just screams for the kind of contrast only a gloss black can provide.

Interesting comparison between the two cars. The sounds of the S65 are really nice (and definitely superior to the S55’s flatulence).

Yea, Gloss black makes so much more sense.

Car
Suspension
Steering
Brakes
Comestics
Sound
Power

E46 ZHP
Ground Control Coilovers
Stoptech BBK ST40
M3 Rear end
TSE3 Exhaust
GC Coilovers + Sway bars made this car really fun at the track while amazing on the street.
I love the steering. It was solid and direct.
ST40 brakes have amazing pedal feel. Strong firm pedal without being overly sensitive. Confidence inspiring.
E46 sedan is my favorite looking sedan. The MTECH II kit looks so right
M54 + TSE3 IMO is the best setup for the E46
Power is low for today's standards but 3.62 LSD made the car super fun

E90 M3
MCS 2way Coilovers
Exhaust Mod
This suspension has major fine tuning to adjust to the terrible roads in SF. It makes the GC look like child's play but you also pay for that..
Thank god its still hydraulic, the variable steering ratio makes its a little awkward but still amazing.
Stock brakes are lacking and I am hoping PFC08s and SS lines will help.
E90 Sedan is one of my favorite sedans as well. That rear end!
Exhaust 4pipe mod makes the V8 sing so well. I love the noise!
HP is significant boost from the ZHP but it has lots of top end. I think 400whp would be the golden number for the E90

For me, the E90M3 is a natural evolution of the ZHPE46 sedan. Chassis development has shown how the newer car can be stiffer and while the chassis is indeed a whale (3700lbs), it also has one of the greatest NA engines BMW ever made. That V8 sound is so intoxicating and gives me giggles everytime I downshift. With the MCS suspension coilover setup to mimic the 991 GT3 suspension, the car feels like a luxury street car that can still take abuse at the track. The servotronics was a bit awkward to learn in the beginning but after the Alpine MSS tune, it feels a lot more natural now. My goal with this car is to create a wonderful street car that can track (ie. M3 CS wannabe). With the exception of the stock brakes, the car is sitting very close to my goals. :)

Of course, with a newer car there are always quirks. Throttle actuators, motor mounts, and rod bearings are common failures that I already replaced. The car also loves to get spark plugs every 12k or so. The car gets about 14-17 MPG which ends up being only 200-250miles before the fuel light turns on. I already expected that maintenance costs is higher just due to being an M3. 9 quarts of 10W-60 and an Oil Filter is roughly $133 in parts!

When I look back at my old ZHP, the car was great minus a little less power than I wanted. I think my decision was sound to let someone else (Brett) take care of it as I drove way too many miles for the maintenance (even though lower than M3) make sense.

FWIW, my Civic turns 2 years old end of March and I'm already at 64k miles. :)

# Update: 2019-03-08
After coding Variable Light Distribution (VLD) to my wife's F87, I started to wonder if E9x was capable of something like this since we also have Adaptive Headlights (AHL). Turns outs, we have something similar that is also disabled in the US (Thanks DOT!) called Adaptive Headlight II.

# Adaptive Headlight II
The headlights utilized the motors to move on both the X-Y axis and X-Z axis. This allows for both left/right adjustments as well as up/down leveling. With AHL2, the headlights can have different presets for different conditions.

This pic helps sum out the output of the headlights during 6 different things.
https://i.imgur.com/2xeaEUGh.jpg

1. Basic: Normal parallel conditions that the US gets.
2. Low speed/City: Driver light aims to the left and both lights slightly lower for better visibility for potholes without blinding folks in the city.
3. Guiding fog light: M3 doesn't have fogs so this doesn't pertain to E9xM.
4. Highway speeds: Headlights stay parallel but aim a little higher for further distance.
5. Adaptive headlights: Headlights following steering wheel input. This is the default for US.
6. Corner lights: This is already enabled for our inner headlight light when we have our turn signals/steering wheel turned at low speeds.

So what do I have to do to get it?
It turns out to be really simple.

# FRM Module

AHL2_Enable = aktiv .

That's it! I'll have to test this.

For more reference, here is the awesome thread I found from 2013.

It’s weird seeing everything with high beam visibility but no one is flashing you or road raging. [emoji23]

For once, Toyota is the one that started it. Post from last Oct 2018.

https://www.nydailynews.com/autos/news/nhtsa-advanced-adaptive-laser-headlights-regulations-article-1.4043781

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced Thursday that it would finally move to allow advanced headlight designs to be used in vehicles on U.S. roads to help prevent accidents at night. Though the release dubbed the technology “adaptive driving beams,” this decision paves the way for a whole host of advanced headlight tech, including Audi’s currently-banned laser headlights to finally reach our roads.

A petition by Toyota in 2013 got the ball rolling for these adaptive lights, which operate at high-beam level as default and can dim or divert the beam when oncoming motorists are detected by photo sensors. In its release, the NHTSA said that this technology has “potentially significant safety benefits in avoiding collisions with pedestrians, cyclists, animals, and roadside objects.”

I'm looking at the ones on the wife's F87. The executive package includes the camera in front of the rear view camera that could allow anti-dazzle high beams to work properly. I'll have to dig into a little more! From what I read, VLD works perfectly fine but Glare-free High beam (GFHB)

S563A Light package
S5ACA High-beam assistant
S5APA Decode, anti-glare FLA high-beam assist
S8S4A Decoding variable light distribution

Sounds like I need to rip out S5APA, and S8S4A. I manually enabled VLD through the E-SYS parameters.

To enable that you have to remove 5AP and 8S4 from the system, then code the light control module and camera module with that so it turns both ECUs into Euro. Once that's done you can turn on everything.

I believe the people in forums are mostly the ones who have either grown up with driving premium vehicles and have very little good to say but complain about the the great things they already have or they are just misinformed on how the system works like when you're in the city with street lights and ambient light is fringing on when the system activates the highs.

Just the low beam LED are really decent which I thought my OSRAM CBI HID Bulbs would still be better with but ground penetration with LEDs are just as good if not better in most cases. Having extra beam to the right or left is better than nothing and it's nice to just see that extra. When you don't pay attention to it you just see further ahead period. Normally when following someone you don't really need a beam going past them since they're your warning but it was nice that as I pass them the light is just shot straight out past them and there it no question that it's safe to pass in complete darkness. The isolated light tunnel seems only apparent if I do a quick lateral jog to see the light move and adapt to the condition I'm in but it's not worse than just low beams. :)

It could just be me too....LOL. Things easily keep me in wonder. I work around people who have nothing and I am always reminded of what my hard work has allowed to afford and enjoy as I live through this journey!

Ahh, you are doing it via VO Coding. There is so many differences I want to know before attempting a VO coding change. I normally do FDL coding as there are items not default in VO.

Anyways, further research has shown the M2 LCI guys have tested deleting 5AP and doing VO Coding and the tunneling effect doesn't work. I'll just stick to VDL since its low beam adjustment only.

E-Sys is an interesting program! The E-Sys launcher premium thing has been a whole ordeal with expiration dates and etc. Luckily there is a re-arm script for now.

I like keeping the VO coding from the factory so when the dealership needs to update the car, they can do it without fuss and complaint it was "tampered." I'll have to agree with you that E-Sys is much larger GUI based coding but NCSdummy was created for the sake of making NCSexpert managable.

E9xM is more traditional like E46 with NCSexpert. Are you trying to generate a lifetime FSC code for your friend? This is probably the best way to do that: https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1461515

Front corner delete has a few parameters. Here is my NCSexpert list of items I have done or saved. There are some fun options like Euro MDM. I would imagine you are fairly comfortable with NCSexpert!

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Nx_8bEN3TIzA1FF2Vmr7Cg3L-nWVFJupc3c94PLXxgg

EDC delete is pretty simple and uses NCSexpert as well. I deleted mine as well when I went to MCS 2-way coilovers.

## Code out edc
1) Disconnect EDC module. It's located on the passenger side rear quarter panel, accessible through the trunk. It's the module with 2 connectors (white and blue). Can't miss it.
2) Remove option $233 from Vehicle Order in CAS using FA_write; then change ECU and FA_write the NFRM.
3) In KOMBI set EDCK_ALIVE_ZAEHLER to nicht_aktiv and EDCK_ID_MONITOR to nicht_aktiv.
4) If you have the first gen idrive (08) in CAPPL set EDC to nicht_aktiv. / if you have the later idrive in CIC set EDC_CIC to nicht_aktiv

# BMW's missing power outlet
For whatever reason, BMW decided that E90s with smoker package cars do not get the extra power outlet underneath the glovebox post-2010. Since I really liked that location for a power outlet, I started to look at my options on how to do this. After some research, I decided to relocate the existing ashtray power outlet and replace the ashtray with a spectacles tray. Removal of the ashtray was simple but the removal of the power outlet was a pain in the arse! Ripping off the plastic piece around it, I was able to relocate it to the rear. I even retained the LED that lit the ashtray to make the LED power outlet glow.

https://i.imgur.com/5pWsDfWh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/Xan8f6Jh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/E0SCybmh.jpg

There were a few optional trays for the E90: open storage tray, spectacles tray with cover, ashtray with cover, and euro business cards with cover. I opted to the storage tray so it could utilize the old leather cover. With the relocation of the power outlet, this was a perfect solution to provide better storage.

https://i.imgur.com/g3PRCTph.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/PZusaURh.jpg

The tray is definitely a much better option for usable space in that area.

# Maintenance/Prep
Yesterday I decided to do some maintenance and prep for Laguna Seca on 4/20/18.

Bimmerworld stainless steel brake lines
PFC08 Brake pads
New OE Rotors
Transmission fluid flush
Differential fluid flush

https://i.imgur.com/Vrw8FNqh.jpg

First and foremost, I have to say. The inner rear brake lines are 100% a bitch. The lack of space in-between the subframe and the white hose in the way made for a hell of a time removing them. On top of that, there was minor surface rust on the brake line nut because it was an East Coast car. This didn't help the 11mm wrench to grab the nut and extended my work on the rear lines for far too long. After that was tackled, the rest of the items were pretty straight forward.

After cleanup, I went on a test drive to bed in the brakes on new rotors. I did a process of 10 60mph-5mph stops with cool down with a repeat 10 60-5mph stops with a final cool down. The cross hatching on the rotor surface from the factory are now gone. :) It also makes a perfectly clean BBS go to this:

https://i.imgur.com/aUmFlA6h.jpg

The PFC08 brake pads squeal like a pig on the streets but since I'm prepping for a track day, this is fine for now. After the track day, I'm debating if I want to buy PFC Z-Rated or go back to OE stock pads for the street. I don't think it will matter too much and I already have brand new OE pads sitting in inventory. I'm pretty sure the OE pads are compatible or if not, the PFC08 is aggressive enough to clean the rotors properly for street pads to be bedded in.

# Coding
In a previous post, I mentioned "finding" adaptive headlights II and it was just a simple coding parameter to get it to work. This weekend, I coded AHL2 to a friend's 2009 E90 and he reported the headlights do swivel based on speed. This confirms it works on M3s as well as non-M E90s. I have not been able to verify it on my own car as I did not drive it at night yet. I did see the headlight adjust itself wider when it was in Auto and it was stationary. Also I moved back to halogen angel eyes so I upped the voltage to 13.7V in NCSexpert to keep it brighter and whiter.

A very eventful Sunday to say the least. Till next time. :)

# Laguna Seca 2019-04-20

Earlier in the year, I signed up for Laguna Seca HPDE hosted by SpeedSF on 4/20. This would mark my first HPDE in over 3 years and my first HPDE in the E90. It was safe to say, there was a lot of rust to clear up! In hindsight, I should've done a track day in full stock form but oh well!

Current setup:
MCS 2WNR Coilovers
BBS GT4 on 275/35/18 PS4S
PFC08 brake pads / Castrol SRF
BW SS brake lines

The weather in the morning was definitely not behaving as the morning sessions were a “tad wet.”
https://i.imgur.com/2nUrN3Nh.jpg

Open 2 group was the first ones out which made it more fun! Lap times were ranging in the 2:10.xxx mark during this session simply because it was so slippery.
https://i.imgur.com/8ZLItMPh.png

Luckily by lunchtime, the weather started to clear up and I was able to get some decent laps in. I finally was able to get into the groove by the last session of the day.

## Impressions
MCS coilovers were simply amazing. Since this was my first day out with the car, I was more focused on fine-tuning the nut behind the wheel before fiddling with the setup too much. At the end of the day, I felt like I was in a great position to improve times without fiddling with the setup too much.

I ended up setting the MCS to the following settings:

Front
Rebound: 16 clicks
Compression: 6 clicks

Rear
Rebound: 14 clicks
Compression: 6 clicks

It is not set in stone but I still need to fix the driver before I can start fiddling with the suspension more.

The Michelin PS4S tires were great but definitely not ideal for a track day. They did perform great in the wet whereas the folks on NT01 were having a hoot in the earlier sessions. I felt like I was getting them greasy at the end of the afternoon sessions even at my slower pace.

Brake pedal feel was okay and the PFC08s were not warming up enough for the first few laps (Another telltale I was too slow for the car) and squealing. They definitely were powerful enough to activate ABS on the PS4S so that was a good sign they were doing their job.

## Video

http://youtu.be/65nAO3usXRk

I started to fiddle with RaceRender and it's been really cool to throw in Harry Laptimer data and GPS data from the GoPro Hero5 into the mix. It makes a very cool compiled overlay with a decent amount of information. If HPDEs become a little more serious, I will "invest" into an Aim Solo2 DL. For now, this will do pretty well!

Lap Time: 1:47.11
I am happy I was able to at least get a 1:47! My old E46 was doing 1:49s so I was hoping to save face by at least beating my old slower car.

My quick analysis says I was early apexing T2, T3, early braking T5, early apexing T8 to name a few obvious areas needed for improvement. I saw one of the M3post members Kpewpew was doing 1:42.xx so I have a few ways to go once I have some better tires.

Next HPDE will most likely be in the summer months so it will put a test to the brakes and PS4S. I'll run the PS4S until it wears out and purchase one of the 200 treadwear tires to replace it.

That's it for now. Till next time!

## Impulse Wheel Purchase
I've always been a fan of JDM cars and the tuner culture they have. The infamous TE37 wheel has always been a dream wheel of mine and I had a chance to purchase a set.

Specs:
TE37SL Double Press Black
18x10.5 +20 Squared
BNIB

The classified ad said it was pressed graphite but when I received them, it ended up being double press black. I spoke with the seller and it was his honest mistake and we figured out some options and worked things out. I have to give him credit for working with me to deal with the mistake as not every seller is willing to do that for a private sale that isn't governed by like eBay or something similar. Anyways, here are pics of these lightweight wheels:

https://i.imgur.com/QhyETx2h.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/n9p0Jomh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/9gpbl3Zh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/y3aLZThh.jpg

After inspecting the wheels in the sun, I came to realize its a metallic like black finish which looks awesome with direct sunlight! It reminds me of Black Sapphire Metallic which happens to be my old E46's color. The subtle metal black sticker is a really nice touch as well. I have yet to decide if I want the sticker on yet or look for another color set.

I was planning to get 275/35/18 tires but RS4 discontinued this size so I will most likely get Z3 for now.

## Hub "Restoration"
Since the TE37SL do not accept center caps, I decided to paint the center hubs black as looking at rusty center hubs is ugly! My brother came up with a great template to just paint the hub from a cardboard box. It didn't survive after 4 hubs but it did the job wonderfully! He used BBQ high-temperature satin black aerosol paint which made this a dead simple job.

https://i.imgur.com/pWvvBagh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/y1Hvvyth.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/gpGJLyYh.jpg

As the official pictures of Laguna Seca started to roll in, I couldn't help but noticed the car was squatting in the rear right after the corkscrew. These pictures were in the morning sessions when it was wet and I believe I left my suspension settings in street mode.

https://i.imgur.com/N0v1knah.jpg

Looking at my rear inner fender liners I saw some nice wearing of plastic!

https://i.imgur.com/0nHtUnuh.jpg

Even if it was in street mode, there is definitely a rise of concern that my spring rates were too soft for the track. I spoke to Wyatt@MCS suspension to gain some insight and he suggested using bump stops to add some spring rate after reaching a certain amount of stroke.

MCS Bumpstop
https://i.imgur.com/pC7imkth.jpg

Next time I take off the wheel, I'll do the measurements and see what my options are with MCS. It is definitely interesting that he suggested using the same technique as BMW M utilizes the front bump stops for additional spring rate at the limit. I dig it! :)

Till next time.

TE37s look great but those BBS will be impossible to top, in my mind.

As a forewarning: if you used the Rustoleum BBQ high heat paint, the satin scratches and scuffs ridiculously easily (I used it to paint my brass fireplace doors black and a swiffer dusting cloth scratched the finish).

This is true. I love the BBS GT4. The main plan is that the TE37 are going to be basically track wheels since 10.5 wide is a bit much for the street. I most likely will keep both sets.

Since it is the inner hub area, I hope scratching will be limited. Either way, it's better than rust!

## The Power steering spill problem
This was a problem with during my E46 days. During heavy cornering at track days, the power steering ventilation port in the cap would spill fluid everywhere. On the M54 in my old E46, this would just mean all over the stock intake cover. Easy peasy. In our cars, this meant the whole passenger side was covered in fluid. What a mess to clean up! I still haven't fully cleaned up everything yet..

How do we prevent spilling?

Bimmerworld PS Reservoir $164.99 (out of stock)

Being the 'thrifty' person I am, I went with the cheap kaiv method. Thank you for sharing this awesome workaround!

BMW F650GS Rear Brake master cylinder | Part # 34 21 7 706 055

The end result is a nice clean setup. Since the PS is designed to vent, I'm thinking about drilling a hole in the cap to allow for that.

Hopefully, this solves the issue! :)

Damn that's a great workaround. You could certainly drill a hole in the cap to be safe, but it may be alright as-is with that volume of air being able to compress.

I'd drill it though. Not like it's gonna slosh out of the remote reservoir.

Edit: found some hella cheap universal options on the bay

Yea its a good idea! It's kind of nice to have the BMW one for around $35 and isn't really much compared to the other options. You most likely can utilize the 10mm bolt near the shock tower by the air filter as your holding area on E46s. I believe that bolt is for the SMG reservoir.

Update 2019-06-30

CIC Navigation Hard drive to SSD
Coming from a background in the IT industry, I usually worried about failures in hardware and the navigation unit in our systems is a magical 4200RPM IDE 2.5” hard drive that keeps me up at night  Even though it is an automotive grade HDD, I think the 10 years its been in there is worrisome to me! I was not the only one worried about this and many on the forums have successfully cloned the drive and transferred it over to an SSD. So I decided to jump in on the same idea.

#Benefits
Faster read/writes
Faster all around for everything
Less moving parts
Have a backup on my computer as well as 2nd drive for backup.

# Parts list
Current drive:
Toshiba MK8050GAC | 80GB 4200RPM Automotive Grade IDE 2.5” Hard drive

Replacement drive:
RECADATA 128GB mSATA SSD
Ableconn IIDE-MSAT mSATA SSD to 2.5” IDE adapter

https://i.imgur.com/feXLE8Uh.jpg

Cost was under $80 and was not very difficult to install. Few folks showed interest in the RECADATA mSATA as it is an enterprise SSD with a larger temperature range that was similar to the existing Toshiba HDD. The Ableconn mSata to IDE adapter has the Marvel chip that plays happy with the CIC unit. I ended up using a StarTech Adapter to connect it to my MacBook.

https://i.imgur.com/lViTt2Vh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/KZqdva5h.jpg

# Replacement Process
Remove CIC hard drive from car
Connect to my MacBook via an IDE to USB adapter.
Use the follow command to copy the disk to an image

dd if=/dev/disk2 of=~/Desktop/cic_backup.img bs=
Connect the new mSATA SSD to the computer

dd if=~/Desktop/cic_backup.img of=/dev/disk2 bs=64k

# Extend Partition
I didn’t bother with this part as I don’t really use the space. I will probably fiddle with this in the future.

# Impressions
Overall, nothing out of the ordinary. Bootup is still similar but the navigation seems a little snappier. Copying the image to my computer took 1hr 25min and writing the image took about 1hr since I used the same IDE adapter. I am happy with this "upgrade." I think I can sleep better knowing the CIC unit won't cave on me cause of a failed hard drive.

Comestic “Upgrade”
#Euro Tailights
Regional differences between cars always facisnated me as sometimes other countries get a better option that North America cars. The ECE tails have one major difference: turn signals light up amber instead of red. Visually, the tails are also similar but with a slightly more pink turn signal area when compared to the DOT version. It's pretty hard to tell them apart when they are off, but when you know, you know right? :)

You can sort of see the pink on the ECE tails when you compare it to the DOT tail light in the middle.
https://i.imgur.com/FVlZYiUh.jpg

When they are mounted, it seems to be very difficult to detect the changes. Only the keen eyes looking for it will be able to tell.
https://i.imgur.com/a7kuNrjh.jpg

Installation was simple, 3x 8mm per side.

"Ricer Mods"
Sunday Funday! I decided to continue my ricer mods and I installed two more!

# Venoxy Cluster Gauges
I was browsing the m3post comestic forums and a few replacement face threads popped up recently. The brand Venoxy stood out because they created wonderful OE-like overlays that replace the OE ones. The version I purchased were black faced with MPH only and the M logo has be converted to be backlit. I wanted something that looked more like the modern M clusters while cleaning up the clutter of having both speed units on the speedometer.

## Installation
The installation wasnt too difficult.

### Tools required
T10 torx bit
Plastic trim tools
Heat gun
Goo Gone or something similar to remove excess adhesive
Rubbing Alcohol
Patience

Removing everything was pretty simple, the hardest part was really putting back everything perfectly.

### Installation notes

The overlay's adhesive is very strong. On the MPG and Fuel gauge area, there are a few spots where the overlay is larger than the plastic it sticks too. This resulted in an area that was super sticky and the warmup dial got stuck on this during testing. I had to take it apart again to add some clear plastic shaped to the area to prevent it from sticking again.
The needles should not be shoved on too tight. If you press the needles from the center down towards the gauges, it should have spring-like bounce and come back up. If it s too tight, it won't do this. Ask me how I know..
The fuel gauge motor was loose during re-installation. I opened the rear and found out that the wormgear somehow popped out of its place. It is most likely when I removed the needles or something. I fixed the issue and was back up and running.

https://i.imgur.com/MdUtTrIh.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/Dc3YL7fh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/688mPt2h.jpg

### Impressions
The quality of the overlays is very close to OE. It has proper spacing and everything just seem to match in terms of spacing and everything else. However, I'm a little disappointed in how it looks more reflective than the very matte OE black ones. This is shown in the picture above and I'm not sure how it will fare when I'm driving with some sun in my cluster. I have not tested the car in the dark yet, but I'm sure that won't be a problem. I love the less-cluttered look and pretty happy with them.

The MPH-only looks great

I am definitely not close enough to the border to warrant KM/H.

The slightly shinier look from the replacement faces originally was a concern but now that I’m used to it, it has not been a problem.

More “racer” upgrades are on the way. I just ordered a Apple CarPlay module to work with the CIC unit. It shipped from China yesterday so we will see how long before those arrive.

"More 'racecar' upgradees"

On Saturday, I installed Kremersino wireless Apple Carplay module in my car.
I purchased this kit from Aliexpress and the link is here:

#Hardware

For under $300, you get a CarPlay module that connects inline with the LVDS cables and iDrive cables. This allows the steering wheel buttons and idrive controller to control Apple Carplay since our CIC is not a touchscreen device. With the distance we have between our seat and the screen, I wouldn't want to try and reach anyways.

#Installation
Overall the installation was not too difficult. Install time was about 2 hours for proper routing of the external mic to the passenger side of the dome light area and cleaning up the wire routes to the idrive controller. The module itself is a bit big and sits underneath the glovebox trim panel there. It does bulge a little there but the LVDS cables are too short to put it in the fusebox area behind the fake wall. I was able to pop oen the vent by the parking brake and use that as a route to the AUX line.

##Notes

This utilizes AUX IN. This means you can't listen to the radio and get audio from ACP for navigation. I solely use Spotify or Apple Music, so this is not a big issue to me.
This also uses an external mic. I routed it near the factory mic and it works fine with Siri. There has been reports of poor audio quality on the other side of the phone call but I have not tested calling nor do I expect to use it very often. You can use the factory BT to make calls as a workaround until the vendor issues a software update to possible address this issue.

##Impressions
My goal with this upgrade was to modernize the screen in the second hump. This provides a way for my phone to update and provide the latest CarPlay interface to the screen. When new Carplay features come out like iOS13, I would get them here!

###Connectivity
Wireless Carplay works most of the time. I can't attribute if the issue is specifically to my phone running iOS13 Public beta 3 or if it is the module not playing nicely. Either way, I'm trying to reproduce the issues to provide the vendor some more details. Charging on the USB seems a bit slow and may require a double USB to add additional power.

###Audio quality
AUX IN has limitations as it is an analog signal coming from a DAC in the module. The audio is clear and does not sound muddle. However, it does sound like it is lacking bass and feels more like monitor headphones. The vendor maybe able to fix this via a software update but we will see when that comes around.

###Controls
To switch between CIC and ACP, you hold the Menu button down. The idrive controller navigation works with scrolling the dial and pushing down to accept. The steering wheel controls to skip work. I have not tested Siri on the steering voice controls but holding down the option button works to invoke Siri. Scrolling the dial on the iDrive controller is similar to all non-touchscreen cars with Apple Carplay like certain Mercedes Benz cars or even BMW's own setup. The forward/back buttons under the preset seems to not be working but I'll check in with others and the vendor to see if this is an issue that can be fixed.

#### Overall Impressions
I'm a happy camper with caveats. The install was good but not happy with the location of the box, the audio is adequate and hopefully better with a software update. The most important thing was that I have ACP navigations apps on my main screen now instead of my little phone. Maybe next up is OEM wireless charging in the armrest now..

That's pretty slick. Sucks you have to run audio through the aux in, though. Guess that's the only option when you're trying to have your cake and eat it too?

The other way requires a MOST (fiber optic) bus to be integrated. Considering this was already $300, I wonder how much that would add into the price. Also it seems the module itself DAC is the issue.

My Original Tune2air BT adapter plugged into the USB and AUX as well but it had fairly better bass. I hope a software update will fix the issue. These wireless units are fairly new and I feel like I’m probably beta tester at this point. I’m okay with that lol

After almost 2 years of owning this car, I finally decided to install tint.

I went with XPEL CR Black 45% darkness. I've heard of XPEL with PPF but I did not know they offered tint until my buddy at the Weatherford BMW Bodyshop showed me what they offered it.

The Total Solar Energy Rejection (TSER) is what is important for heat rejection.

3M Crystalline40: 60%
Xpel CR Black 45: 52%
Suntek CIR40: 52%

Lower teir on my Civic:
Suntek Carbon35: 38%

Overall the heat rejection on this tint is significantly better than my Civic's Suntek carbon. Of course they are not in the same lineup but it was nice to see an improvement in the heat rejection.

I am debating if I should tint my windows or not. For the first time in my life I have a black leather interior and it's pretty bad during the summer.
I haven't tint any Windows for last 6 years and last time I've used some sort of Llumar product.
I've heard many good things about Xpel products, so I might give it a try.

TSER is the number you want to look at after the darkness of the Tint you want.

That 45% looks fantastic. Do you have any other shots of the car, perhaps from a little further away? Great point about the TSER.

## Labor Day Weekend

I met up with locals wyatt and jordan for a mini cruise. Turns out we all had slicktop E90s! It was a very short cruise but it was interesting to hear an Eisenmann Sport, M performance exhaust, OEM Exhaust mod around the Berkeley hills. :) We didn't get to take a lot of photos of the cars so here is just one obligatory one. Next time around, we will try to get more folks for a cooler pic.

After the meet, I continued on to wander around since I was already there.

Nothing really new to report. I just passed smog today and fiddled with my Apple CarPlay module to confirm the module is the reason for the lack of audio clarity and bass. I will be working with the vendor to resolve this issue.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to be giving up on installing a lip until I move to a driveway where I can clear it without scraping going out everytime. Resonated test pipes are on back on the list of items I want but I think there will be no new parts till 2020 as other priorities are shifting up on the list. The car at this moment is at a very good place to enjoy as is. :)

#New Steering wheel
For whatever reason (probably cause I miss Alcantara now that I don't have it), I decided to buy a new steering wheel to replace my perfectly good leather one. The BMW M performance wheel is nice but it is a blue stripe where I wanted a red stripe. Since the red stripe wheels are rare and seldom come up in classified, I opt to go with a company that rewraps OE wheels. Enter LederManz. They will pretty much do anything to a wheel at your request and their pricing isn't bad at all. Pricing varies based on what you want to do and the best part is there is no core to ship back.

#Review
I decided to go with M colored stitching, Alcantara, 12'oclock red stripe and a flat bottom. This looks like a factory performance wheel and included an Alcantara steering wheel trim. I opt to keep the factory M trim so the Alcantara trim is sitting around. all the brackets and etc had to be transferred over from my old wheel but it was expected. Build quality feels very OE like and I think it could pass as a factory wheel. The overall thickness of the wheel is lower than the factory leather one but it should be similar to the M performance one. That's okay cause I have tiny hands. :bellyroll

I haven't driven it yet but initial impressions are very good. If I had to do it again, I might have to buy a leather version of this! :)

That’s beautiful. I love the look of flat bottom wheels but I couldn’t get used to driving with one.

oddly enough, you would think it would be harder, but since I mostly will be holding at 3 and 9 while driving fast, this isnt a problem. While cruising, the corner where the flat edge starts sort of develops a ball like an area. This feels very natural and comfortable to hold your palm right there. But I don't have any real driving with it just yet. I just installed it and retorqued the bolt down.

# More "necessary" parts

Last weekend I decided to message Steve, the new owner of a dream build e92 I've been following about a few parts. Steve mentioned in his introduction thread that he would have so minor parts removed, so I jumped on checking in with him. I ended up buying two things I've been looking for but didn't have the heart to buy yet.

## BMW Motorsports tow strap
The first item, I've been somewhat interested in for a while. The BMW Motorsport tow strap. This item had a little foam stopper that goes behind the tow hook cover. Since it required a slit tow hook cover, I also asked to purchase that! When you tug on the tow strap that is exposed through the tow hook cover slit, the foam stopper pops out the cover. Neat simple idea!

## BMW ECE aspherical mirror glass
The other item, I've been wanting for a while now is the European aspherical mirrors. It seems the majority of Americans hate this mirror because the 2016 Civic offered it on their driver side and people complained to the point that my 2017 Civic hatchback no longer offers this option. :mad0259:

In my previous E46, I had ECE aspherical mirrors and loved them. The glass shape on the M mirrors seems to be exclusive to the E9xM and E82M so finding a used set is fairly rare. Since they don't pop up on the classifieds that often, I figured I ask Steve if he had a price for them too. Luckily we were able to negotiate to a number we both were comfortable with. It worked out!
