I have been wanting a ZHP for a really long time, and since I sold my H3 recently, I thought this would be the perfect time. I've been into off-roading for a long time and I'm going to get another Hummer eventually. But if it's going to be a project, then I need a DD.

I looked around online for a while but all of the ZHPs I could find were either way overpriced or had super high miles or something. I found one that was close and had been wrecked and the guy wanted almost nothing for it. It also had every option that I wanted. I knew that e46s have some issues with the cooling system and some other little things, so I thought I could fix it up and do some improvements while I was at it. Who doesn't like doing mods, right?

To do list:
Maintenance stuff on engine - done
new cooling system - done
Put it all back together - done

Body shop to put bumper and hood on - in progress AND THEY ARE TAKING THEIR SWEET TIME ABOUT IT

fix headlights - They are ZKW's and the light output suuuuuucks. Also the tabs all broke off so basically nothing about the headlights is usable. I'm going to need new ones. Plus the headlight squirter thing on the left and probably the trim underneath it.

Figure out coolant leak - I don't think I put the cooling system back together correctly, because the upper hose connects to the reservoir at an angle and leaks. I found a plastic part that was supposed to go in there and put it in, but we'll have to see if that worked. EVENTUALLY *ahem, body shop*.

A/C condenser - when I took the radiator off, I blew freon everywhere, so i figured the A/C condenser was in good shape. Turns out, it's leaking so that needs to be fixed. It would have been a lot easier with the front end apart, but I'm dumb and didn't do it. This is Texas so I need to fix it even though it's November.

Cooling system/pulleys/other engine stuff:

To start off with, I took off all the damaged stuff and had a pretty clear view of the front of the engine. I replaced a bunch of maintenance type stuff. Aluminum pulleys, one of those high-tech water pumps, new thermostat, belts, etc. It was super easy, I'd highly recommend anyone taking the entire front of your car just to replace belts. It makes the belt part a lot easier.

The new aluminum pulleys and belts:

Inside the cooling jacket. Looks very clean to me. I think I got a well maintained car:

This water pump makes my day. Look how high-tech it looks:

I basically bought everything that Mishimoto makes and put it together in my apartment (thanks baby wifey!) Sorry I don't have more pictures of the radiator and stuff.

Reassembled (sorta). I had to buy a lot of little plastic bits, so this part took a while. Thank you amazon and your lightning fast shipping:

At the body shop:

The hood is on. It needs a few little things, like one of the springs that was bent. He's putting on those hidden hood pins, too. Safety first! I forget what they're called, but they come on some 1-series special edition from the factory so I figure they're not too bad. Also they're black and flat so that's good. I was going to get a steel hood from a junk yard but I live in the middle of nowhere and I would have to drive a million hours to get one. I suppose it's weight savings to offset the increased coolant.

I got a seibon hood and the body guy said it fit really well. I was worried about that. I wanted a MA shaw hood, but he never returned my calls so whatevs, I guess.

Thanks. The shop says the frame is straight. When I put the new rad support in, it lined up perfectly. I think it was a low speed accident and they hit a lifted trucks trailer hitch or something like that. I really lucked out finding this car.

So, I got it back from the body shop after almost 3 weeks and they have done.... almost nothing. They bolted in the hood, and that's it. I guess he was trying to put the hood spring in and realized it was broken and then just gave up. He said he couldn't do the bumper because there were broken parts. The only broken parts were brackets... I'm at a loss here, but whatever. It cost me $64 to have a hood bolted in, so whatever. I'll just do it myself.

I'm going to take the radiator out and install a new AC condenser, reservoir bracket, and OEM reservoir, finish doing the hood, etc. I'm putting in the OEM reservoir and taking out the Mishimoto unit. It looks to me like it's a bit too big and it pushes the hose out so it doesn't get a good seal, and that's where my leak is coming from. It's either there or the bottom of the reservoir, so either way problem solved.

That should solve a few problems and make it actually driveable. I'll be able to register it, get plates, and drive it to work. most of my stuff gets here next week so i'll have to wait AGAIN for my parts. Oh well, I have my beat-to-heck police car so no big deal.

Oh yeah, to top it off, they lost my bumper. So I have to call the guy who is perpetually on lunch break and find out what he did with it (is he a stoner?) and order some new brackets and install it. Should take an afternoon (hint, hint BODY SHOP).

My next round of repairs is going to be new headlights. I'll get AL units and put my ZKW lenses in them. I might do angel eyes if I can find a deal. It looks neat, but I don't want to be too ricey. I also need new headlight trim on the left side and headlight washer nozzle.

I was up until 5 am or so taking the radiator out. I got my new parts in the mail today and I'm going to reassemble everything and maybe put it back in the car after work. I work a weird shift so It's not totally strange that I'm staying up this late. I'm pretty excited to get it running right.

I also have another hood spring coming ... eventually. Turns out, the hood is about a quarter inch too short. The hood itself is adjusted as far forward on the hinges as it goes, and the hood springs and latch are as far forward as they go, and i'm still lacking a fraction of an inch. I'm going to see if the hinges themselves can be adjusted forward, otherwise I'll have to grind the hinges themselves to make the adjustment holes larger. ugh. should have just gotten a junk yard hood.

I went to them before and they painted a grill for me and did a good job in a reasonable amount of time, I don't know why they're being this way now. Oh well, i guess it saves me money.

This hood is going to be a pain. i hope it's worth it.

I got the cooling system all done. I had to get an OEM radiator and coolant overflow tank. The mishimoto stuff fit like garbage and the radiator leaked at both ends (kinda like when you get food poisoning, huh? right? no? ok). I'm going to try and send them back and get a refund.

I took it out for a test drive and cruised around town and didn't lose any coolant at all. But, my headlights are TERRIBLE. New AL units are next after the bumper and getting it registered.

Well, i down to 3 warning lights. I had 6 at one point. I have a low windshield washer fluid light, brake wear indicator, and air bag system light. I just took it to firestone and they said the brakes are good so I just need sensors for that. I'm ordering a new non-leaky headlight washer, brake wear sensors, and one of those INPA cables to check out the ABS light.

This weekend I'm going to finish a few small things and put the bumper on.

I'm also trying to diagnose my wife's X5. It feels like there's a flat spot or something on the front left tire but firestone says it balances fine. The 4 corner air suspension system is inactive and there's a low tire warning. I think they're related somehow. I'm going to swap front wheels and see if that affects anything.

The steering also feels pretty heavy to me, so I wonder if there is something in the steering system that is contributing. It may just be the sport handling package, though.

I can help you with the X5. The air suspension inactive and tire pressure light on together means that the air suspension module is most likely gone bad. There are several other things that you should check regarding the air suspension. If you have DIS, you can use that to diagnose/reset the suspension system and see if it comes back. The problem with the air suspension is when 1 part goes, if it's not taken care of right away, it can have a cascade effect on the rest of the system. It usually starts with a leaking air bag which over taxes the air compressor and then all that kills the module that controls it. The "air suspension inactive" warning is the bane of every air suspended X5 4.8is owner. We spent several K over a two year period fixing our e53 4.8is and that was with me doing most of the work.
I would not try to guess when it comes to the air suspension. There are too many parts and variables to do that. DIS will be your best friend for this.

The steering is designed to feel sporty just like the ZHP. The front control arm links have a fluid filled bushing just like the ones on the e46. they go bad and makes the suspension feel mushy over small bumps, etc. I replaced them with poly. Much better with no added vibration or anything. Also these have the same style swaybar endlinks as the e46 so they may get noisy too...

The e53 4.8is is an incredible machine but man, it's like an expensive date that never ends...

Thanks for the advice, I still need to get one of those INPA cables and software to do the coding and reading error messages, so I'll do that before I start swapping parts. None of the corners sits lower than the other ones and it doesn't feel like the air shocks are leaking so I think it's a module or sensor somewhere.

I sometimes feel like I got in a little bit over my head with the e53, but my wife loves it and it' a fun car to drive so we'll see. At least I don't have a long list of mods I want to do. I just want to get the problems fixed and drive it. And maybe turbocharge it.

Keep an eye on those air bags. The system will compensate for a leaking air bag by running the compressor so you may not notice it. If the compressor runs too long, it burns out. The air bags become porous and weep air out so you'll never see a hole if you're looking for it. You can spray soapy water on them and see if you have any leaks.

On a positive note, could be as simple as a diagnostic/reset though. Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

It's definitely fun to drive! You have about 360hp under your foot as is sits. Ours ran about a 14.5 at the local drag strip. Not too shabby for that heavy of a vehicle from a dead stop and it handles better than most cars.

Here's a couple of posts from Xoutpost that will help you familiarize yourself with the suspension and the issues they have. If your really interested, I have a white paper from BMW that explains the whole system in great detail.

https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/x5-e53-forum/107587-tool-setting-twin-axle-ride-height-please-2.html

Lastly, if you find that the air suspension is too costly to fix, ECS Tuning has a conversion kit. You have to code out the air suspension though...

that white paper would be great, actually.

I made sure the tires were all filled to the same pressure and reset the system and haven't seen the TPMS light come back on. That eliminates that variable, i suppose. I'll read up on those links and keep looking around. I might look at the level sensors and see if they're rusted. I just ordered an INPA cable so i'll be able to look at the error code in more detail pretty soon.

that conversion kit is looking better and better, though.

So I took a look at my suspension this weekend while I put on my brake wear sensors (down to 1 warning light, woo!) and found that my left front control arm bushing is worn and that where the shake is coming from. I ordered the stage 3 suspension rebuild kit from ECStuning (https://www.ecstuning.com/b-assembled-by-ecs-parts/front-and-rear-suspension-refresh-kit-level-3/e463112-lvl3~kt7/). I don't know if rebuilding the entire suspension is overkill, or if at 120K miles it's going to need it soon anyways, so I might as well do it all at once.

Opinions?

So, a few updates: The X5 fired right up with the fuel pump. *sigh of relief*

I am halfway done doing the front suspension overhaul. I had a bad inner tie rod and bad control arm bushing on the left side. I also installed one of those rough road package plate things. The strut tower reinforcement plate. My strut tower was starting to deform. I drive a lot of really really bad roads. I work in an industrial area and there are potholes and poorly done repairs all over. I'll take a picture one day.

While I was under there I started looking around for where the oil leak is coming from, and I'm pretty sure it's the oil filter housing gasket. It's all over the left side of the engine block, but not the right. I can't see any oil under the valve cover or close to the top of the engine and it never smells like burning oil, so I'm pretty sure it's not the valve cover. The only that concerns me is the oil is all over the oil pan gasket, too. I'm reeeeeaaaalllly hoping that I don't have to change the oil pan gasket.

Also I got my Avin stereo in the mail!! oh boy!

The dealer replaced my valve cover gasket under warranty about 9 years and 100k miles ago... I just swapped it last month because I figured it needed to be done but it was still in perfect shape and pliable after all those years and miles...I don't think it necessary to get a special one for that

I just got it back from the alignment shop after overhauling the front end. Tell you what, it feels totally different now. Steering is tight, it doesn't shake on the highway. Completely worth it to rebuild instead of just replacing that one control arm bushing. That one was shot completely, the other one was on it's way out and both inner tie rods were wobbly.

They also said my rear tires needed to be replaced ASAP and that my rear control arms were a little bent (isn't it a 5 link? which control arms?) so when I do my rear end rebuild I guess I'm replacing those, too.

Next things on my to-do list:

oil filter housing gasket - ordered the viton one. Going to do this next saturday since I'm going camping tonight
Replace headlight washer pump
Replace right windshield washer nozzle
Fix left airbags - I'm getting a code for the airbag system and I think I'm going to clean off the contacts and hope that clears the code.
Fix automatic windshield wiper sensor

Avin Avant 3 stereo
phone holder - i got a little cell phone holder from Kuda and I like it, except it hangs down directly in front of the stereo... which is really stupid.
Install Factory TPMS
Fix automatic climate control sensor and replace heater resistor .. thing.. i forget exactly what it's called. but it's on the list of things that are likely to go bad.

That will be it for mechanic stuff, then it's on to cosmetic issues and THEN modifications. maybe.

oh yeah, I have a 2nd job interview on wednesday, and if I get this job then this list will get marked off a lot faster - and I'll buy a house (AND GARAGE) by the end of the year :)

I think I need to install an app to make it work. I've looked around the settings menus quite a bit. I'll ask Avin and see. Their communication is ... sporadic at best.

Also, I got my AC recharged and it.... still doesn't work! oh boy. Summer in texas is coming so that's very bad. I got a error code for a evap temp sensor a while bad, so that might be it. i just need to figure out which one it is. They're cheap sensors, though, so I suppose I could just replace them both.

Anyone have an idea how to figure out which one is which in INPA?

Oltorf

So, I think I fixed my AC. I'll wait until it gets hotter to celebrate, though. I replaced the evap temp sensor and it blew cold for an entire 5 min drive to target to buy mineral water last night.

*fingers crossed*

A lot of people complain about all the electronics in newer cars, but I would have had no idea what to replace if it hadn't been for ISTA getting a fault code from this sensor. If it does fix the issue then I'll be very happy.

I've gotten most of the kinks worked out of the Avin unit. I broke a USB cable and I think that's the source of my last kink. Also, I like how the interior controls look a lot better. It was kind of strange having a storage cubby, some buttons, another storage cubby, more controls and then the stereo. It flows a lot better with the controls all together.

Updates: My A/C is running great, just in time for summer. I took it to the dealer to get it recharged and they found $7,000 (!!!) worth of stuff to fix. I had them to the A/C and that's it (cost me $3,000 - last time I go to the dealer). They wanted to fix my oil pan leak (actually, it was the oil filter housing gasket) and oil filter leak O-ring leak (really? adding a new o-ring?), new rear tires, 2 new airbags, and a few other things.

Anyways, I replaced the OFHG with a viton one and it seems to not be leaking any more. I also changed my oil and used that fluorescent liqui moly stuff. I shouldn't have any more oil leaks.

I got cheap new rear tires from discount tire. They aren't anything special, but I figure by the time they wear out my front will be gone too. My wheels are covered in road rash so I may just get a square setup and then get decent tires. That's 50K miles down the road (I hope).

I had an error code for high resistance in my left head airbag. I cleaned the connection and plugged it back in and it seems like the code has gone away. Hopefully it stays gone. The left door airbag is throwing a code too for low resistance. I don't know if I'll need a new airbag or not, but I can get them for $50 or so and it's a lot easier to replace so I may just put a new one in there when I put speakers in.

So my goals were to fix all the leaks and get rid of all of my error messages - 1 airbag and replacing the right side headlight washer plunger ought to do it. Then it's just a bunch of little things that need to be repaired and I can move on to cosmetic stuff.

I also got the back up camera working on my Avant 3. The DVR system plugs into the CCD RCA plug, not the DVR plug. Go figure. I'm posting here also in case anyone has the same issue I did. Honestly, I'm starting to wish I'd just gone with an NBT retrofit or something. Avins are so doggone glitchy.

Update on the X5 - no fix for the air suspension yet, but I think it's the control module - $600 :'( and now it needs a new brake vacuum pump. I will probably do that tomorrow.

Convert the X5 to standard suspension. The air suspension is a bottomless pit, trust me.

With the money you spend by the time you get it working properly, you could have a sweet coil over suspension.

We replaced that module twice. The first replacement failed within a year but luckily we had it installed at the dealership so the second one was free.

I'm thinking about it. Right now, it's not leaking or riding funny or anything so I am just going to leave it. I may not ever replace it, who knows. I swapped out the air suspension on my old crown vic because I was tired of dealing with it.

The air suspension on the X5 is pretty cool. I can relate to why you'd want to keep it. We felt the same way until realized how much we spent fixing it. I just don't want to see you go down the same path we did

So, good news and bad news. Good first (or should i divide it up between E53 and E46?)

ZHP - I got the airbag recall done. That's it

E53 - had some issues with the brake booster. Fixed it, took it to the dealership to get the brake fluid flushed. Then, the brakes started locking up - very bad. It's back at the dealership now. They think it wasn't flushed correctly. I have no idea what's wrong, other than the brakes weren't loosening up and at one point they started glowing red. If I pull up on the brake pedal, they loosen up again. Who knows

Good news - the found that whoever replaced the pump for the air suspension didn't replace a seal. They replaced it and now it works. Didn't cost me anything except diagnosis. So now I can lower and lift it about an inch or whatever.

they want $9,000 to replace the entire brake system. Brake booster, ABS module, everything. It's already been flushed so I think I can get away with doing the master cylinder and that's it. Let's hope anyways. Another DIY job.... yay.....

Sockethead

If only the seals swelled in the caliper, you should be good but there are also seals in the master cylinder and the ABS module. Also, if the only thing wrong with the caliper are the seals, you could do that yourself. Labor intensive but doable..

Oltorf

So they replaced some seal at the dealership and the air suspension started working again... for a few days. Then the warning came back and then a few days after that the rear bag completely deflated.

Also any recommendations for coilovers? I've been looking at BC racing. They seem pretty good and a good price.

Swap to coilovers.... you're beginning to see what I mean about the air suspension, eh?
When you swap to coilovers, you'll have to code out the air suspension to get rid of the inactive warning message, there are threads on X Outpost that tell you how.

yeah, i do. they are a YUGE pain. i'd like to do some aftermarket wheels and new tires for it while I'm at it and lower it a bit but that's more than I'm willing to spend right now. I'm buying a house in April so all projects are on hold until then. I also don't want to spend any on the air suspension :-/

Sockethead

Did I send you the PDF that shows the components of the air suspension? You have to trace back from that air bag. I would assume a leak would be forward of the valve. Otherwise, all the air bags would be leaking/ deflated. Also check the level sensor on that side. Check the air bag itself for leaks. Easiest way is to spray it with soapy water and see it anything starts bubbling. My rear bags weren't visibly popped but became porous. They were bubbling up everywhere.
You'll need something like DIS or one of the other BMW software tools to clear the error. I like DIS because it has a full diagnostic routine you can run on the air suspension.

I gave up on the air suspension. I haven't put any money into it, but I've heard too many horror stories and getting it fixed for the first time was going to cost a lot - mostly because the dealership's strategy was to replace EVERYTHING at a 1000% mark up and hope that they got the right parts. I got the suncore kit for about $650 total. The rears are done and I'm going to do the fronts this weekend. I'm also getting new tires today. Probably be a good time to get a 4-wheel alignment. After that the E53 needs a few little things and it will be in good shape, except for my wife and kids using it every day :rolleyes

I thought about doing some lighter aftermarket wheels and coilovers but I'm saving up for a house down payment so that will have to wait. Maybe after these tires wear out. I really like the X5. I may keep it for a while.

ok, story time. So I've had an intermittent misfire and some hesitation at low RPMs. I got a CEL for #2 misfire so I figure it's time to change the spark plugs. I change them and put in those pricy NGKs and it runs fine for a while (and while I was out test driving it I saw a Factory Five GTM with a 680 hp LS7 for sale) and then the miss comes back about the same as before. Fortunately, I have my moments of non-stupidity and I swapped #2 and #3 coil pack and I going to get the code read sometime.

If it's not the coil pack, what else should I look for?

Issue #2

There was oil on the spark plug threads, on the outside of the spark plug hole, on the edge of the valve cover, and I smell burning oil when I'm stopped. I'm guessing it's a bad valve cover gasket. Am I right?

Issue #3

This is a good one :) So i drove a bit angry a while back and might have pulled up on the shifter kind of hard and now the shifter pops up about a half inch and won't go into gear. I have to push it down and then it will go into gear. What did I break?

Sockethead
12-06-2018, 07:04 AM
#1, What kind of plugs are the NGKs you got? Single electrode ground or multiple? I'd get the codes read before doing anything to verify the miss didn't follow the coil swap.

#2 yep! sounds like a bad gasket.

#3 There is a plastic ring that holds the shifter ball in the carrier. sound like it has either popped out or is broken. Good news is, if it is that, it can all be done from inside the cabin...

I'm starting to think it's a VANOS seal problem, not a misfire. The description matches what's going on. I ordered a Beisan systems seal kit, VCG gasket, and coil packs. The ones on now look like they've been on for a while and they're kind of corroded looking on the inside so why not.

OK, so I put in the bavsound speakers and they worked fine. I checked and every speaker was working. Later, I disconnected the battery and replaced the door airbag and splice in a new connector. Sometime after that, I noticed that the front right door speakers weren't working. All 3 were out. From what I understand, it could be either the amp or the head unit. Any ideas how to test these or anything? If it is the amp, how hard would it be to use an aftermarket amp and do a sub while I'm at it?

Well, I have some free time and I might need to make a long drive soon so I've started my next project. Last year I rebuild the entire front end and added koni struts. Now, I'm rebuilding the rear end suspension and adding the rear koni shocks/struts. And rebuilding the shifter, adding a short shifter, replacing the power steering hoses and reservoir.

Well, I looked under my front end and saw the serpentine belt had started cutting into the expansion tank and the engine fan. My front skid plate ripped off a while back and I THINK the radiator needs that skid plate to be in place on the bottom. If anyone can verify, that would be great.

So, to sum up, in order to fix my expansion tank, I need to mount my radiator correctly. I need the skid plate and bottom sealing mount for that. Those need the inner fenders to mount right, which need a front bumper that doesn't hang off to one side to fit right.

And if I'm going to get a new front bumper I might as well replace both fogs with those LED ones, because one fog ripped off with the skid plate.

this project is getting out of hand.

Oh yeah, the intake boots are ripped so I'm replaced those and doing the DISA rebuild from GAS while I'm at it AND doing a CAI because WHY NOT at this point. Maybe I should supercharge it while I'm in there! Who knows!

Oltorf
05-28-2020, 05:53 PM
OK, so i looked at the radiator, and it seems to me that the reason why there's serpentine belt interference is the dealership installed the radiator and AC condenser wrong a while back. The condenser wasn't sitting in 1 bracket. It took me a good hour to get it in so I can see why they left it, but still, that's pretty shoddy work. And on the right it wasn't seated correctly. So it looks like they just slapped it back together. I've never had a good experience with any dealership - chevy, BMW, nothing. Maybe it's just the area I live in. Anyways, it's all sitting in there right now but I'm going to zip tie on side back because it's slipping around a bit more than seems right to me.

So, I guess I don't need to wait for all the body parts to drive it again. Just the intake stuff and the expansion tank and brake bleeder stuff. So I should be able to test out the lowering kit and short shifter then. I'll take to the frame shop and have them align it and then finish everything else when I get it back. Around here, going to the mechanic is always a multi-day event, even if it's an oil change and tire mount.

I got it aligned and then drove it straight to the dealership to get the most recent recall - checking the passenger side airbag from the last recall, i think.

They say I need a new battery (i knew that - done already), a new oil pan gasket (i suspected), a driver side curtain airbag (I was hoping cleaning the connection solved this but I guess not), and rear brakes.

So I was this close --> || to having all my warning lights off, but I guess not. My headliner was sagging anyways. And the oil pan is leak is making my oil "less than a quart low" so the oil light is coming on when i turn the car off. Also, I wanted to start on fixing up the interior but I guess these last few things will have to get fixed first. At least I have time now. I got laid off from the 'rona a few weeks ago, which is why I have been able to make so much progress. At least I got a decent severance package and unemployment benefits are good now, and hopefully after Monday they continue to be good *♀️

edit - i guess i should add, since someone was asking about the short shifter. It's great. I love it. It was hard to get used to the much shorter throw. I thought I wasn't getting into gear and trying to jam it harder, but I'm used to it now. I can see what people are talking about with positive engagement now. It feels super accurate, like a robot shifting or something. Also, I got it up to about 115 on the highway and it felt great. Very smooth, even with my cheap tires. Don't worry, I live in west texas and the roads are long and flat and straight for miles and miles and every drives at least 90 so it wasn't that unsafe :D

I was so disappointed with the Avant 3 that I got a pioneer head unit, but I put off installing it until I saw the new and improved Avant 4. I’m a sucker and my typical BMW owner autism won’t let me install anything that doesn’t look 100% factory.

I liked the bigger screen. Of course, bigger is always better and I’d install a computer monitor in there if I could, but I like the medium size screen. As you can see from the picture, it matches the interior very well. The really big 9” screen ones look cool but the way it extends out of the frame seems out of place in an older car.

It’s a whole lot faster and slightly easier to install but you’ll still end up taking it out 10 times. Still no instructions, but there is a pretty good support staff now. They forgot a main wiring harness, so I emailed them at like 3 am and they put one in the mail at about 5 am Texas time.

There are still a few bugs to work out but at least I have better steering wheel controls. We’ll see about the rest of the bugs.

Yes, the avant 4. If I can get some issues fixed then I’ll recommend it but otherwise it’s probably better to avoid it.

Keel us posted. I thought I heard good things about the Avant.

There are a few models of the A4. The regular one you're thinking of, and 2 with bigger screens - 8.8" and 9". this is the 8.8" one. They are a bit hard to find on the website but they are there. i think there was a 9" version of the A3, too.

Here's the 9" model installed in an M3. I got a few ideas from this thread, like the dynavin bezel with USB ports.

I put the driver's seat from an M6 in tonight. I used this thread as inspiration -

https://www.e46fanatics.com/threads/m6-seats-in-e46.992412/page-4

It goes right in, just like it says. The difference is mine is a sedan and the seat belt bolts to the frame rail and not the inside of the b-billar like it does in a coupe. I swapped outside frame rails and problem solved. Now I have new-ish leather, lumber support, and adjustable bolsters. As soon as I get the passenger side in and some other worn out parts replaced I'll post some pictures.

I just read through that thread on e46f... Damn, that's pretty slick. Looking forward to your photos and thoughts on the new seats.

1. Awesome

2. How's the bolstering on M6 seats vs. E46 M3 seats?

3. I am going to assume that the active side bolsters are not programmable in some retrofitted way in the E46?

4. I haven't been on E46Fanatics in ages. I am not a fan of the revamp of that website.

2. It's better. The E46 seats feel a bit like lightly padded plywood to me. M6 seats are softer and the bolstering feels like it fits better.

3. It's not active bolstering, but there's a switch to adjust it.

4. This is the only E46 site i'm on :D

The M6 seats are more comfortable. They're adjustable in more ways and softer. Not 70's Cadillac soft but soft enough for a sporty seat with good bolsters.

The link that I posted from e46F.com isn't entirely accurate for the ZHP. The OP's car is pre facelift or something like that. I figured out (after I swapped seat belt receivers... do'h) that the receivers are the same. They don't have to be swapped. The outer frame rail for the sedan is different, though. I took off 2 10mm nuts and used to my fist to get the rail off. A tube that fits over the electric motor came off with it. They swap right over, no big deal. I suspect for the coupes the seat belt does NOT bolt to the frame rail so you wouldn't have to do this.

Other than that It's a very easy swap. Totally worth it.

What bugs are you having with it ? Or what doesn’t you like about it ? Looks good

I just barely got it set up all the way and it's a lot better than the A3. The only but I remember now is that the person speaking button on the steering wheel doesn't activate Siri. I've tried doing the steering wheel setup but it doesn't work. I also need to install software for the dual DVR system. It's a pain to install the software.

I finally hit a major milestone in my car's life! NO MORE WARNING LIGHTS. I replaced the curtain airbag, which had just been but off in the middle of the A-pillar, so I'm guessing it was in an accident before the one that totaled it, and since they kludged that repair, the SRS system was disabled and that's why the airbags didn't deploy in the last accident. So..... lucky me? That explains why the left front fender is a bit crooked.

I also had to do some electrical creativity to get rid of the last thing that was keeping the SRS light on. The M6 seats have a different seat sensor, so that was also triggering a code. I suppose you could put the E46 seat mat in the M6 seats, but I just did a seat sensor emulator. If anyone is interested in an M6 seat write-up, I'd be happy to do one. It's simple but there are a few little electrical things to do make it as factory as possible.

Also, my leaking headlight washer that is less than 3 years old caused all my windshield washer fluid to leak out so now I have a warning light for that. *twitch* I think I'm just going to plug the lines and take the fuse out for that pump. It's not like I need it here in west Texas. But my BMW OCD is making it really hard for me to not have a 100% factory car with everything working.

Also, I finally *mostly* finished the interior.

Here’s what I started with:

Sagging headliner, trashed and falling apart seats, curtain airbag that was cut off, alcantara on steering wheel totally wrecked. Really, all the alcantara was pretty bad.

Finished:

(Warning, some of you may disapprove [emoji1])

I finally have the A4 stereo working. I added a dynavin bezel because I like the USB connections. One goes to stereo and one is power only. The cig lighter is still usable, though. I suppose it would have been cleaner if I ran the cord out of the glove box straight to the back of the phone Mount, but this works too if I don’t want to use the Mount. Plus I drilled holes and added an aux cord and HDMI plug. Will I ever use them? [emoji2369] it looks neat though. I have my own little multi-media command center.

I reupholstered anything that had alcantara and replaced the rest with Coby wheel leather. The fabric I used was intended for Porsche or VW seats. So it’s not really a BMW thing, but I figured German cars are close enough. Why Porsche used to regularly upholster seats in Scottish tartan is a good question - and I did some research and found out why.

I also replaced the seats with M6 seats. They are more comfortable, they have lumbar support, and bolster adjustment, and they aren’t falling apart. Write up coming... eventually.

I didn’t get it detailed yet but that’s ok.
