Hi Mafia. In late December 2016 I change my daily driver and would like to start a new project thread.
A quick story how I ended up with the second ZHP. Between 2014 and beginning of 2017 my daily car was Celica GT. It was purchased new by my wife back in 2003. Being a New England car for the 14 years car was very rusty. The body was fine as well as the engine and transmission, but removing every single nut and bolt was a challenge, where every half an hour job was turning to few hours because of the rusty components. Plus, car had 207k on the clock so a decision of getting slightly bigger and better car was made.
Initially, we decided to buy 2010-2012 honda civic. I had a 120 miles daily commute and buying something cheap and reliable made a very good sense. I drove several civics and almost bought one, buy something was off. That something was good handling, excellent build quality, good driving dynamic and simply enjoyment behind the wheel. Cars that I drove were so boring, slow with rattle from every single panel. So I decided to get another BMW, despite my commute and larger expense in terms of the maintenance.
I looked at two locally listed 325xi e46, but they were in bad condition. And then, price on a listed zhp on our forum had dropped, which was close to my budget. Deal was made and right after the Christmas I took a train NJ.
Here she is - sleeping the first night at new home.
Vehicle had a pretty extensive maintenance and was in a very good condition. Interior and exterior are great too. There is only one spot that needs to be cover with a touch up
Details of the car:
It's 05 in alpine white, auto box with almost every option except the lumbar support. Mileage during the purchase - 118k.
Since the purchase time, following maintenance items were made:
1/2/17 -118,597- Driver side air bag recall
1/2/17 - 118,615 - licence plate bulbs, windshield fluid pump, BG fuel additive
1/22/17 - 118,729 - both front window regulators
3/19/17 - 121,057 - V1 hardwired and Homelink retrofit
3/24/17 - 121,680 - FCAB, end links, diff and brake fluids flush
4/1/17 - 122,198 - oil change with 0w40 Castrol
4/9/17 - 123,086 - transmission fluid and filter changed
4/17/17- 123,435 - alignment
6/27/17 - 129,178 - oil changed with 0w40 Castrol
7/14/17 - 132,390 - ceramic film windows tint
8/9/17- 133,640 - spark plugs, transmission oil top off and front right wheel speed sensor
9/30/17 - 136,676 - oil changed with Mobil 0w40 and oil sensor; bimmian phone dash mount bracket installed. Blackstone oil report - perfect results, engine is healthy.
11/15/17 - 137,132 - CCV, OFHG, M3 engine mounts, Vanos oil line, tension and idler pulleys.
12/11/17 - 137,480 - ZHP silver cube trim installed.
Future plans. This car is my working horse, so my goal is to keep it running at lowest possible cost without safety and reliability sacrifice. No cheap aftermarket parts will be used. Car will be staying in the stock form.
There are no projects planned for the winter besides leather seats restoration with Leatherique Kit.

I found out for thus kit by Googling the leather treatment products. I've seen such a great results for black e36 m3 seats. I don't remember where I found that, but end results were simply stunning.

Yes if done right leatherique makes your interior look brand new. I saw a YouTube video they posted using an Audi seat where they let the pristine clean sit for a couple of days and the results were incredible.

Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkThe only problem is that it doesn't do anything for cardboard hard leather. It cleans very well but that's pretty much it. Best to use to maintain like-new leather.

02/04/18 - 138,187.
Replace all power steering hoses and reservoir. I went with Rein hoses this time because they were much much cheaper than OEM. Plus, I got them from FCP of course.
Also, replaced my cracked dead pedal. It's been cracked for at least month and I was lazy to get one of jank yard. I have no idea how it was cracked. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180205/c07408a3c03d59929eada47e0a55d151.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180205/9a141f438d71d5968eb4cb8637a27ac6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180205/9454362c64e4785e80b495c6494b0b56.jpg

Not much things happened during the winter time. Car drove very well and soldered on quite nicely.
Car got some goodies installed in May.
5/4 - mileage 143,030. Installed APEX wheels that I bought during the winter group by. I went with 17"x8.5 et.40 in anthracite silver. Since I downgraded the wheels, I had to purchase a new set of tires. I went with Hankook Ventus V12.
Car looks so good! I didn't expect to be that happy with these wheels. I am absolutely love them and thinking to buy them for my Imola. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180704/151e601f19b70961a85d5e98187b7f93.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180704/6d68d55e8bdc7389de096b8b9dadd092.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180704/8cfbc7be9450940514bfc34556be422c.jpg

I basicaly had 3 reasons for downgrading wheels:
Roads are crap in Boston area and I wanted to have a bit more sidewall
I wanted to run square set up so tires can be rotated and car will be more neutral
Look if the car

They are actualy much easier to clean than stock 135.

Did a light maintenance and a lot of detailing, which was planned long time ago.
Following items were replaced:
1. Engine air filter.
2. Cabin air filter.
3. Windshield cowl. Mine was very old and rubber sealing lip was falling apart. I was surprised how easy it was to replaced.
All parts were purchased at FCP.

In addition, I finally started my Leatherique seats restoration. Today, I just did a first step and applied rejuvenating oil and let it work for ~24 hours. Car was parked under the sun with closed windows for better effect of the oil. That is what recommended by manufacturer.
For the application I used a soft brush and microfiber towel for all seams and crevices.
Tomorrow I will continue with stage #2 and application of Prestine Clean. I am planning to apply die on front seats as they have some wear and cracks. I am very excited to see the results.
Also, I spent some time and cleaned the trunk as it gets super dirty after all my camping trips. And lastly, engine bay was cleaned as well. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180709/56fb1032eb3c035ebbf54a881cb74886.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180709/1d1a2b502d68fc324b637bff0e7c1f00.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180709/7295ae9ad5fcac1e9b4ab50e6851b7c3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180709/95191093abd861e54d1e8acd1cdadde4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180709/3ee64529b80af7e23e840c12f81fbff4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180709/c1e596083e397688ee47e1cc35b05937.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180709/943153428c6420d3d961e831735e5995.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180709/43f388f6c41e7a71a4167afd79d6ce72.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180709/2a48e888cb975c49e38fbf8bf4c4c676.jpg

Leather feel much much softer, especially on the back seat.

Today I will be moving with die and hopefully my front seats will look much nicer.

Well, not a good new regarding the die application. Die that bought was very light on color. It is not grey, it is more white.
So, now I want to go with the custom die color, so I can restore driver seat and arm rest.

Well, this project didn't get any updates for the last 3 months.
Actually, there was not much work done or needed for the car.
There was a small cosmetic update in the interior. Back in August I installed a new cup holders and BMW Performance shift knob. Cup holders were pretty bad. I changed the knob because original leather was pretty worn and I wanted to knob be more aligned with silver cube trim.
Then, there was just a typical maintenance, such that:
10/22/18 - oil and filter changed. Oil was send to Blackstone Lab for the analysis. Lab results were great. Mileage - 151,455

11/17/18 - winter wheels installed. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181123/b981c23f75b3c92aaead377e408bd9a7.jpg

Back in October I did a biggest trip on this car - 2200 miles in 9 days. That was awesome! I drove from Boston to Smoky Mountains and back.
Car behave so good on the highway, Tennessee country side roads, some twisty mountain roads. It was a blast to drive on great Smoky roads. On my first day upon arrival to TN, I drove almost 300 miles though various parts of the mountain roads. I got lucky, because It was a bit rainy and foggy and as a results there was not many people on the roads.
Here is some pictures from the great nation park - Smoky Mountain.

Lastly, while I was in TN, car reached a big milestone under my ownership. Car rolled past 150k miles. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181123/60beed896b0dde67daa399f327171c01.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181123/66a4791eaee071da662b1d2034ef5176.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181123/bfa7ed1ec92b083c68ec7d0e6554d68a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181123/030f7c9be90ad79da4f3d3c57bf8bf80.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181123/554884298fdd6b13c1be2a132ab94e9d.jpg

Car received small cosmetic upgrades.
First, is that I installed new HVAC relocation bracket. For this job, my new to me touring was cannibalized. Touring will receive Xtron from my Imola car.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190107/42bf6f45c6e7b5c5c17ddeb691101195.jpg

While, swapping tail lights, I cleaned the area behind the light gaskets since there is a lot of crap build up over the years.

Cleaned

Dirty
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190107/2b810e051bb7af7f6f8cc8d14c91247b.jpg

Second update is more fun and noticeable - clear Euro tail lights. I still cannot believe that simple upgrade of tail light makes a so much difference! I absolutely love them!
Here is the how the car looks with stock amber lights

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190107/5ab05db0377e77f1699602e20e76b378.jpg

And this is a clear lights. I have a weird set: inner (trunk) lights are DEPO and outer lights are OEM. I bought used out lights very cheap almost two years ago and since that was not able to find a reasonably priced inner lights. DEPO was purchased brand new.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190107/0829cff9ada57358cc02c6bc33ce8a4f.jpg

and installed LED reverse light bulbs. The difference is pretty noticeable:

I wasn't planning to do any serious car modification.
But, a very good local alcantara interior deal showed up and I couldn't resist.
So, over the next couple of month interior of this car will be converted from gray to alcantara.
Almost everything is sourced, with the exception of small interior pieces and black center console. That part is very expensive.

Updates time.

Installed Mahle KL149 fuel filter. Filternwas certainly purchased from FCP. FIlter was replaced at some point before my ownership and cheap hose clamps were used and they rusted quite badly. So, I installed new fuel line clamps that connect filter.
Also, oil was change with Rotella 5W-40. Oil was sent to Blackstone and report came out great.

Mileage - 158,324

Today, I finally started my interior swap. All 4 door cards from Alcantara interior were installed. They were pretty dirty and it took me a good amount of time and elbow grease to clean them.
Over the weekend I cleaned all fabric and alcantara on all seats. I will have to clean front seats rails before seats will go to the car and definitely will do another round for alcantara cleaning. I followed Larry Kosilla technique for alcantara cleaning. I forgot to take pictures of the seats, but will definitely do that before the install.

I am planning to start leather seats and carpet removal this coming weekend and will be posting my progress. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191231/9ffd84a60a8b1ef2a1e1f363aef60f2a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191231/5c45ee30ec19c21ed5ccee8bf6d0c8d9.jpg

Work that was done so far:

Removed seats
Removed central console and all plastic items
Removed glovebox
Removed armrest
Removed rear section of the carpet
Removed airbag on the passenger side

Surprisingly, I am seriously stuck with the steering wheel. Spring on the left side of wheel that needs to pushed in order to release airbag is stuck. I removed steering wheel multiple times in the past and very familiar with the process. I will continue to work on it tomorrow. Steering wheel significantly slowed me down as I was planning to remove everything today and start black dash, carpet and seats install tomorrow.
Well, battle will be resumed tomorrow. I have to remove steering wheel and all plastic around the column, pull out dash board and pull ot front section of the carpet. The goal for tomorrow is to install black dash and carpets and as much trim is possible. Let's hope I am not going to fight with the steering wheel for a long time.

I have a few pictures, but it's very dark in my garage, especially with on going construction.

I forgot to mention that I also retrofitted OEM alarm today. 360713607336074

When I've had the same issue removing the steering wheel, i usually re-seat the airbag and start with the side that was giving me issues.

I actually have some progress. Carpet swap is complete, black dash was installed and I started to install all the plastic bits. I am planning to complete this project by the end of this week.

Did a small cosmetic upgrade on my car:

1. Installed used OEM msprot door sills.
2. Installed new OEM right side fog light cover. I lost it somewhere during the move and road trip from Boston and Charlotte.
3. Installed new OEM cup holder. Old one was pretty scuffed. I am going to buy a new coin holder as well, because it is super annoying to have scuffed and new part next to each other.

Car mileage 171,611.

Next on the list - diff and transmission oils. Maybe it will be SMG wheel retrofit, will see. It is pretty cold to work outside and I do not have a garage space at the moment. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220108/0e5c539dbe47e9bab16b3ac8ca92a69e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220108/3d3fc4760791200c259b49dc6a900acb.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220108/4f824a44cbbc5fa0b6a03d9b6060a914.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220108/06281765f55e3742c7f531b45bdff1db.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220108/343129af62e17b753be1b40c4ae68683.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220108/8edf30bba72bf23ad30e6c9676c49318.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220108/80d3e69e30a0a4e122e71f5322913858.jpg

Back in spring of 2021 I decided to retrofit OEM SMG steering wheel on the car. I found locally a trashed steering wheel, which was pretty cheap. I was planning to rewrap it anyway, so condition of the leather was not super important. Bottom steering wheel cover and paddles were pretty scuffed as well. New OEM paddles are stupidly expensive and I didn't want to buy aftermarket.

I had a bad experience few years of DIY and was searching for other options. I found a guy at NAM3 forum, who is doing a great job of trim recovery.
I pulled the trigger and 1 week ago recieved parts. Results are great and parts came out really nice.
Now I need to find a good warm weekend to install the new wheel and wire SMG specific slip ring. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220108/e8f74486e6e5ecdea48c680fccbd529c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220108/66abbbcb8ed0620b5a7139ff57a3d959.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220108/0823246a6fe49a073bb88256e0449746.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220108/c43301cc8e2e45ece9c4e6286bdc4553.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220108/132f45744af992de4f82723dbf970849.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220108/ddad79d3236eca9644377001046f1a38.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220108/4470dc134f687567b8ec0a592020e1eb.jpg

I remember when I paid $80 for that lower steering wheel trim back in the day. That part now is $181. Crazy.

I was looking at some new center console parts and they have jumped in price. Euro tray is now $143 and rear Ash tray is $92.

Such is the future of parts for the E46. Everything will rise in cost. Replace it now before it becomes unavailable or overpriced

Two weeks ago my window regulator failed. Usually it is not surprising, but it was this time. This window regulator only lasted 2 years. This is crazy considering that I am not really using it and car was in the storage for 5 month. I am done dealing with URO premium and went with OEM one from FCP. It is 3 time more expensive than Uro premium, but I hope it can last a bit longer this time.
Guides were lubricated and everything where my hands can reach inside of the door was cleaned.

Mileage at installation was 172,561.

Also, I finally ditched the front license plate and got a brand new sunshade. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220218/aca459e51dbf6211cb788956b1ba23fd.jpg

Working on TB and DISA right now.
Dinan TB was installed. It is only 1 mm bigger in ID that factory one. I was thinking it is a bit more. I am still going to keep and do not have a high hopes for additional power. Throttle response will be improved for sure.
Also, pulled DISA. It didn't look that bad for 180k miles. Rebuild is the must in my opinion, so that is what's next on the list. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230215/c62e370a33980cf2d61c3b504c6a48dc.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230215/479b9e5289bec2d8d7bda05756d6f261.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230215/1ad4fcad12db2822880e7198876e03b9.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230215/569ec0ae2a72091c109b3321f99e5515.jpg

I think Rob got the DINAN TB and Software III flash and told me that there was not much of a noticeable difference from the OE TB and stock tune. I think it is a combination of having the DINAN intake, TB, exhaust and tune that you will see a difference but for the amount of HP gain you will see it won't be worth the amount of money you end up spending when you can get other solutions that will get you more horsepower for much less. Still, having a full DINAN setup is still pretty cool and to have the DINAN badge on the car is still a nice statement in my opinion. I like seeing these updates Sergy! :thumbsup

Thanks Charlie. My updates are super slow here, but work on cars is going. You are right about money/hp ratio. Buying new parts doesn't make sense. Probably used one as well. Since my car had some Dinan parts already, I was able to buy TB and intake for reasonable money, I decided to go with it. Unfortunately, I would not be able to officially have Dinan car. The only official new purchase from Dinan will be software III.

While working on installing TB, I noticed that my power steering lines stated to leak a bit. They were replaced with same Rein brand and ZF reservoir. They lasted 5 years and 50k miles.
I also noticed that my vacuum hose that connects direct to brake booster is collapsed in one area and developed a flat spot. OEM hose is on the way from FCP and will be replaced. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230217/06b8ab606752155648e68fa5c65bc3fd.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230217/26a6dd27fac0ee41c2c8e6dc4d00769f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230217/a6065c4ba3ba997b10360b27124e0598.jpg

Looks like I never finished a write up about my early winter projects.
Well, here it is:
- complete cooling system overhaul l minus plastic pipes under manifold. I have to go back and do it sometime in 2024.

- complete power steering system overhaul minus the pump.

- DISA valve rebuild

- Dinan parts install: throttle body and intake. I still have to do a software flush, so I can hopefully see any difference.

- restoration of Dinan front strut bar. Mounting plates were powder coated.

- screws and t-nuts for bottom splash guard were replaced with new parts. I hate to see rust on my car and slowly replacing all the parts as I do maintenance or repairs.

- all 4 jack pads were replaced with new one.

- lastly, retrofitted M3 cluster. I just did it for looks. It looks much cleaner and having temperature gauge is cool. I still need to do the wiring for warm-up lights to be functional. LED for the rear doors were added.

That is my plan to get stage III. I was surprised how difficult it was to find a shop in Charlotte area that can do. I call 5 BMW specialized places and one dealership. All of them said that they cannot do it. I called Dinan and asked what can I do. After some emails back and forth, they said one place can do it. I just need to make an appointment with them.

I am glad to hear that you noticed the difference. Do you have intake and TB as well?

I have the Dinan intake and Pizza's Garage TB, which should be the same or similar diameter as Dinan.

How's the removal process for the intake box? I've always wanted the dinan intake (damn you NLA BMW intakes!) but was afraid it would make intake removal more annoying with the hose.

Yes, but does yours have the ultra custom signage from ZHPizza himself??

And I agree with about BMW Performance intake.

It actually says Pizza's Garage on it.:pHow come I missed the fact that my neighbor is offering them?! Too bad. Maybe I should get one for the touring.

Wheels ceramic coating in progress.
My motivation is to reduce the pads dust build up on the wheels. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230624/0247939f2b618c2593fdb9d22dbbf3dd.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230624/c2de54ed2bf4402152e33bd01d7f7e35.jpg

Looking good. Have you tried Akebono ceramic pads?

Looking good. Have you tried Akebono ceramic pads?Thank you Fredo. I did long time ago on my other car. I didn't like them. I think they were too abrasive for the rotor. May be something else was wrong.
I settled with Textar from FCP.

I finally did Dinan Stage III for intake and TB. Initial thoughts, car is pulling a bit stronger between 4.5 - 6k rpm. I hope this is not just my butt dyno. I need to drive it more in order to make a conclusion.
In order to better optimize performance, I changed all ignition coils. That was a good maintenance since I haven't changed them for ~80k miles. I went with Delphi coils from FCP.
Car mileage: 182,298 for Dinan software and 182,366 for the coils. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230625/186f2cca012366720cd01602ebf9a230.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230625/501d3fea709aa0e6edf88a6b1fad3dbf.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230625/7681881ccdb8b692e83f62ccd9c1996a.jpg

Changing the coils made a good difference in how the car accelerates and how the engine revs in general. I went with Eldor.

I should of change them about 5k miles ago, when I replaced spark plugs.

I changed all the lug bolts. Mine were rusty and slightly beat up.
Also, re-installed CCA badge. The threaded rod was rusty and replaced it with stainless.
I hate rust.

Installed my front Dinan bar back. I pulled it out several month ago because I wanted to powder coat both mounts. They had a lot of scratches and looked ugly. In addition, I cleaned the aluminum bar itself with fine scotch brite to clear some surface oxidation. Also, refreshed the Dinan sign.
Lastly, replaced slightly corroded nuts and bolts with stainless one.

I do not know why all of my pictures are coming our cruket. Even if I rotate them, still coming out like garbage once posted.
That is annoying.

I have seen that issue when pics are taken with iPad or iPhone.

Just for fun: I saved this pic to my PC and rotated it.
