Now that my red car is pretty much complete and after selling the White s54 Wagon and then picking up another Japan rot wagon for another s54 project to sell.... A deal that was too good to pass up landed in my hands and somebody was selling in Orient blue on natural brown sport 325 rear wheel drive for $800. Clean Carfax Southern car no rust 250000 miles.
It already has an M54B30 swapped into it but it's not running well because of previous owner didn't get everything situated. That engine is going to be pulled along with the transmission.
I was able to Source my original zhp engine and transmission from my red car and purchase it back from the previous owner who hasn't done anything with it yet. I know that engine and transmission was fine when I pulled it so I feel great putting it back in this wagon.
Plans are to order the M Tech 2 rear bumper with PDC since this car has Factory PDC already and then purchase an mtech 2 front bumper and side skirts. Get it all painted and then get my hands on a set of Black Cube trim as well.
Plans are to sell my Nissan Altima once this is finished and use this as my daily driver.
I fell in love with the wagon because you can fit so much into it but I don't really feel like making it in s54 M3 wagon... If I did that then I never want to drive either of my cars.
I'm going to leave the stock automatic differential and since it's at 3.46 I believe so even though it's not a limited slip it should give me an extra boost on acceleration.
I'm going to convert the car from ms43 to ms45.1 and I have my original zhp DME that I'm going to get ews deleted.
Here are some initial pictures of what I'm working with.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180828/0943e4f97a71a340137adaca8d7fd177.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180828/3e87904273d2dd5382b47acf95184758.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180828/1f84fd7a9a3cd1835007cc528270a552.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180828/05e57621d02a2fb2dbcff0e9ed528879.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180828/e40fe9b46580749953a2981dc27ddbcd.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180828/2778a60620a828da1406ecc77c3ce707.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180828/096c33b6d4f877a9edcc8fd7d3fc90e1.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180828/f305d999c4fe3606a3eabae147225f01.jpg

Damn that interior looks great. Nice pickup.
I've already decided that if something happens to my red car, then the guts are all going into the wagon...maybe except for the 6mt...the auto in these cars is so nice and really fits with a DD wagon...
Excited to follow this project!

Hey Shawn, any progress here?
Sent from my SM-G900V using TapatalkYeah a lot of progress this week. Got the old engine and automatic transmission pulled and installed the zhp engine and 6-speed transmission. I have planned on using the automatic 3.46 diff but it's a 4 bolt diff and the zhp drive shaft is a 6 bolt so I had to purchase a zhp diff which is a 3.07 I believe. Anyways diff drive shaft transmission engines all been installed. Maintenance done to the engine was new CCV system, cooling system upgrade new radiator hoses water pump coolant pipes on the back of the block. New oil filter housing gasket, valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket.
Engine actually started up on the first crank after sitting for 2 years in a corner somewhere lol.
I had my original zhp DME modified to remove ews but unfortunately I have some wiring issues to figure out.
The wagon is ms43 wiring system. and unfortunately there's some key differences on the X 60004 connector which is the body harness connector that plugs into the DME.
S54 and ms43 DMEs use pin 10 on X 60004 for fuel pump relay activation.
Ms45 .1 does not use that PIN. Instead they use pen 31 and 35 on X 60004 to trigger the ekp module which is a more advanced fuel pump relay in zhps. so what this means is I can actually start the car and it will run because the fuel pump gets energized the first time I turn the ignition off and turn it back on the DME is not detecting the ekp module so it's not energizing the fuel pump again so I have to wait before it starts again about 25 to 50 seconds.
I've looked all through WDS and real OEM and I cannot find out where the ekp module in our cars are. I know the actual fuel pump relay is behind the glove box but that's not the ekp module.
Nor can I find the wiring diagram and pinout for the ekp module for a zhp. I can only find it for the M3 ekp module which is different it's 8 pins versus the zhp which is a 6-pin.
So until I can figure this out the car won't be done yet.
But I have some updated pictures and a little video.

Great progress Shawn! You made a giant amount of work.
Bummer on 3.46 diff. I've heard that there is difference, but didn't know what is it.
Are still planning to install different diff in the future?
I happy to hear that engine was started without any issues after long storage period.
That rear bumper cover is going to look very sexy when it will be installed on the wagon. Plus, I know you will make a proper photo session when car will be fully assembled, cleaned and ready to rock.

Still not sure about a wagon. But it does has some back of the brain interest.

That shock looks gold...this thing got FSD's???
To use the 3.46 you'd just need to swap the input flange, which can be done at home if you're real careful, but you'd be best letting a tranny/diff guy to do it to set the lash correctly.

Thanks Rus, i def cant wait to get front and rear bumpers painted and the chrome trim painted gloss black. proper photos are a must lol.
the exhaust for e46 non M are all stupid long ass ONE piece sections. takes 2 people to get them into place lol. at least with M3 the exhaust is in 3-4 sections

thank you! i have a lead no a set of 4 but they may get sold since the seller is waiting to see if they go with their car for sale. i may hit you up for those 2.

The BEST shocks for a daily. Koni recently changed the line to "special active" and started painting them red, but the gold FSD's (frequency selective damping) are in two of my cars and I friggin love them. Smooth ride, great handling. Perfect for your dd wagon.

awesome. i bet the ones on my wagon are old lol.
so did way more researching last night and came to the conclusion that WDS online is wrong. they only show MSS54, MS42, MS43 and MS45... but NOT MS45.1. the MS45 was the SLUV M56 engine and that is what uses EKP module for fuel pump relay.
i walked right out to my ZHp last night and looked at my x60004 DME connector which is the body harness plug and right there in PIN 10 was a purple/black Fuel pump wire and pins 31 and 35 were empty.
there is no wiring pinout for MS45.1 on WDS or online TIS so annoying.
anyways this means i am wired properly for fuel pump which is why the car starts and run son first crank.
it fails to start a second time due to a DTC error code for EWS 3.3 manipulation. (i sent out my MS45.1 dme for ews delete) so my guess is that they didnt do something fully or correct with the EWS delete.
i was able to trace wires for the DTML Heating activation and get t hat repinned properly.
MS43 has a wire from pin 51 on x60003 that goes to x6011 PIN 7 which in turn goes all the way back to trunk of the car.
on MS45 DTML Heating is located on x60004 pin2 and that goes directly to back of the car DTML unit.
all i had to do was just run a pin from x60004 pin2 to MS45 x6011 connector which plugged into the chassis connector and DTML Code went away.
had a friend code out SAP Air mass sensor along with SAP s oI will flash that tonight
after that the only thing left will be a final resolution to the EWS issue and im done swap wise.
i can move onto the aesthetics in the coming weeks.
cant wait to drive it. will be nice to drive my old engine and 6 speed again. the heart of my ZHP now resides in my wagon lol

jst found out from the person i got the car from.
the car has koni FSD all around and they also purchased new BMW Sport springs for the rear only because the rear was dropping according to them. FSDs and rear springs have less than 20k miles on them he states.
question is what are BMW Sport springs? he said the wagon had the sport package which technically it does since it had sport seats... but i assume they are not ZHP springs.....

The car is a 2002 so I'm Georgia that means you can only have one monitor not ready to pass.
I only had sap coded out. That's one monitor that will be not ready.

My tip to you on your wiring issues, reuse the MS43 wiring. Have the DME coded to EU2 and you will have no issues with SAP and Cats.
The only changes you need are to the intake air temp sensor (Located in the Manifold) and an MS43 MAF. No need to get crazy with the wiring harness. Any tuner can use the base EU2 file and get a nice tune on there.

thanks man, i had already dropped the engine into the car with the MS45.1 wiring harness and DME.
i did some more research and found out my root wiring issue was WDS is wrong.
in WDS they have wiring diagrams and pinouts for MS42, 43 and 45. i made a spreadsheet that compared all of the DMEs so I could match the various DME plugs and see which PINS needed to be deleted/moved or left alone.
MS45 had quite a few changes in regards to SAP, DTML and EKP Fuel pump relay.
come to find out our cars are MS45.1 which are a hybrid of MS43 and MS45 and there is no documentation no MS45.1 in WDS. the closest comparable is the DME MS45 listed for the E83 X3 MS45 M54 cars..
once i got that diagram I saw that the fuel pump was pin 10 just like MS43 and 42 and did not use EKP like M56 SLUV cars.
i only needed to code out SAP since im not using it anyways and then wired in DTML by repinning one wire.
car starts fine now and sounds great with no CEL.

Got a little bit of work done this weekend. Finally found my old Alcantara shift boot so I can use that with the 6-speed conversion. Also finished wiring up the auto to manual conversion so that my mirror reverse tilt and PDC would work again. You end up having to run a single wire from the cluster to the fuse box area where there is a junction of reverse wires.
Refinished and installed Black Cube trim and also went ahead and installed the mtech 2 OEM front bumper Grill and headlights. bumper still needs to be painted but the stock front bumper was so bad that I'm willing to drive around with an unpainted bumper for now.
hopefully I'll get some more time another weekend to install the mtech 2 rear bumper.
Also found an awesome deal for sedan gloss kidney grills on Amazon for $35 shipped Prime shipping. Literally perfect snug fitment good quality stuff.
I can't wait to polish these headlight lenses they are so foggy. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181008/c6f88d4bd41a70c6facb59a05337268d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181008/184554a3b59ec66f9019d81cd87c0b60.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181008/c833dc25370a55ac57955f87cf7ecb4d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181008/ccbbdf4b49751fae12ce95b0208f6ee6.jpg

it does but still I need to get proper wheels on it, lowered with a slight rake from back to front and and the rear bumper onit and a better camera for a picture.
that angle doesnt do the car any justice.
i thought I wanted 135s on it but now im leaning more towards a more aggressive arc 8 fitment lol. something with a concave feel. i dunno i should just put 135s on it and be done. i wasnt supposed to be modding this car. its supposed to be a daily.
one thing I will say is the difference between driving this car for a few days then getting into my red car is night and day. the wagon is so stock, smooth, linear and soft. not bumpy or jerky.
the red car is raw... i actually stalled out a few times and was like wtf man this is awesome lol.
zhp engine is definitely slower by a lot than my S54. its agonizing sometimes with the difference in performance especially in the low end. 1st gear in my zhp engine is weak until the higher RPMs. maybe the engine needs vanos work or something and i think i left the clutch delay valve in. clutch doesnt grab until very top almost and its too smooth with the engagement.

Careful with lowering springs -- those FSD's need a lot of travel to function. They basically use the full travel of the suspension to absorb harsh hits and provide stiffer damping during slow transitions (turns). Might want to check with koni or at least search the part number to see if they're at least rated for sport suspension, but they usually don't recommend them with anything lower than that. You end up slamming off of the bump stops if you don't have enough spring travel.
Also, I honestly think the tourings look best with 17's, which works out great for gas mileage, comfort, tire cost, etc etc. I don't like the wheels that are on it, but the ones on my wife's car fit great with the lines of the body.
All in all, be careful with scope creep on this one. You're a mad modder at heart (duh) and the stuff that you're bringing up has the potential to ruin the smoothness that you're loving about the car as a daily driver. I'm teetering on that edge with my ZHP now and worried that I'm going to hate driving the car in a year.

just got pictures late last night that paint is drying on my mtechII front and rear Wagon bumpers and m3 side skirts.
i couldnt find mtechII skirts locally but did found some M3 ones so they will have to do.

Sourced some oem black gloss touring trim from Hungary. awesome seller from a Facebook wagon group. sold the trim for $100 but the shipping was $210 because of the size and distance. I was more than happy to pay the total price of $310 considering its almost 3k from BMW brand new for the complete set.

No pulling off the rails for now lol. This is supposed to be multi purpose daily driver for bikes and such. #noshowcar mmhmm
I picked up a zhp parts car locally to part out. It had a BMW performance 3 inch airbox but it was smashed from the accident [emoji25][emoji25]
I found out that the bottom half that was the main damaged piece was actually the same as the normal m54 airbox. So I was able to reuse my stock bottom half airbox and just perform a slight epoxy repair on the air duct bottom piece that came off.
Not bad fix for the daily and it added a little bling unde the hood
Oh yeah also was able to complete my ms45 conversion completely. Ms43 cars didn't have the wire harness for SAP MAF so I always had SAP not ready monitor for emissions. That bugged me so now it's 100% emissions compliant ms43--->ms45.1 conversion.

well not going to lie, the stock 325 sport spring/FSD setup was pretty dang comfy.. felt like i was riding on air. though it was nice, it was a bit too disconnected for me.
after doing the ZHP steering rack upgrade last week with brand new lemforder ZHP control arms, tie rods and FCABs WITH a downgrade form LF30 to LF20 steering pump... the steering was VERy tight and i love it. feels like a brand new sport car.
now with the new steering and its awesome feedback, the PSS coilovers really make the car feel more nimble and precise. its not bumpy all over the place and its not super slammed. it feels "right"
FSD were posted for sale locally for $300 and sold in about 10 min lol

Yes sir! I'm probably going to try a set of 30mm spacers in the rear with the new 245/35 tires on the back for a absolute flush fitment. My goal is not to run a spacer but to see if I like the look with the 135s and flush Fitment and then see if it's in the card to pick up a set of e60 135 et20 wheels that are 8 inches wide and have a custom wheel shop widen the wheel to 8.5 or 9 inches and move the 8.5 rears to front.
Have some more recent pics as well.
I'm looking forward to getting the factory chrome 330i badge for the rear along with the black sedan M dead pedal.

Be patient with the chrome trim and use scotch bright generously. Scuff up the trim really well.
Make sure to get bulldog paint adhesive promoter to help the paint stick better.
Go slow with the spraying..wait a few min between coats and be generous... you will need 2 cans at minimum. I blew through one can very fast and didnt have another can :-(
Also be careful with the rear rain gutter trim that goes around the rest window... Try your best not to break clips.

So little bit of a very cool update. while sourcing alcantara seats for my red sedan and having Charlie come through for those front seats.. i ended up finding a non folding rear seat set from another member on the facebook groups and got a front pair of seats with that set to for a very good price. it also had a perfect passenger seat and a driver seat with a very bad driver bolster.
i had spent the last few weeks trying to source good OEM material but after numerous samples from Hydes leather, headliner dr and a few local sources.. nothing matched the oddly shaded GREY/GREEN hues of the factory alcantara color.
Cue Sreten :) to save the day. if i could give this man a handshake, hug and buy him a huge mexican dinner over in germany (he would know what I mean lol) i would. Sreten saw on the facebook groups i was looking for matching OEM ALcantara and despite getting numerous swatches and samples from vendors online, nothing matched OEM wel. everything was too grey or too magenta. you couldn't see it well with your eyes but if you took a pic it was very easy to spot and I knew having just one piece of the bolster replaced would stand out like a sore thumb.
Sreten sourced an e39 mtech alcantara rear lower seat cushion and offered to give it to me for just shipping. i was floored, this was perfect match material and plenty to fix 2 bolsters on 2 driver side seats i have in my posession. (one from charlie and another from the other purchase I made).
so now i would be able to have a oem repaired seat for my red sedan to complete that alcantara interior..
i now had 2 other front seats that will be repaired with the new found material from Sreten.. he asked if there was anything else i was looking for and i jokingly said "sure how about Mtech alcantara Touring rear seats".. in about 2 min he already found a set for like $115 on germany style craigslist sites. i said no way we would make that work shipping will be a night mare unless someone could remove the seat covers and just ships the covers.
Sreten not only said he would go pay and drive 1.5 hours away with petrol at like $5-6/gallon over there but he also removed all of the seat covers and packed and shipped them out to me in record time.
i am floored with how nice this community is, between Charlie going out of his way to meet up with my friends to hand off front seats at a great price then Sreten with the Score on super Rare in the US rear alcantara rear seats I really need to figure out a way to pay it forward.
if there's anything someone needs in regards to wiring, coding, custom work on their e46 etc.. i'm so down to help at no cost...
maybe i'll go through my parts bin and see if there are any goodies i can give away in the pay it forward thread.
Here are some pictures Sreten sent me from him journey to go get the seats along with disassembly and packing...
i'm really excited to have matching alcantara interiors in the wagon and the sedan soon.
It was so cool to see pics of Sreten journey through the country side and how other shops look in Germany.

Removing the fabric was the easy bit, putting it all back together is the challenging part.
I'm glad I was able to contribute to your amazing build. I'll take you up on that Mexican dinner if we ever cross our paths. :biggrin

Been riding on this square style 67 setup for a few weeks now I'm pretty happy with it. nothing I'm not happy with is my cheap Chinese tires so the next time I change wheels or change tires I'm definitely getting something much better.
maybe I can find a good deal on those Firestone Firehawk tires I keep hearing about.
these accelera tires pretty much all of the cheap Chinese tires I always get I've never had issues with until now I've had these tires between probably four sets of different wheels and all of the wheels despite not having any bends in them always start having vibration issues of around 80 miles per hour and above. the only thing that consistently stays the same every time I get vibration is the Chinese tires.
Guess they just probably have too much plastic in them [emoji23]
Got a photo dump of updated pictures from couple weeks ago but just never posted them on here. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190405/042ebed4fd27c5a9642a7e764f5f4481.jpg

It definitely is. I'm very happy driving it every day, just the right size for me, good utilities, decent mpgs, good looks, sporty feel when driving.

Unique and tastefully done. Love the flush look with the spacers. Curious to know if you notice a change in handling with the spacers due to the wider track? Different feel on turn-in?

the pictures with the style 67 M3 wheels are not using spacers. its a square setup of 18x9 et27 with 245/35/18 tires.
with the ZHp wheels I ran 20mm spacers i the rear and 15mm spacers up front. i didnt notice any funky driving on the street but on the track i cant say since i dont race or track the car.

I can't imagine it'll be hard to sell.
Did you end up putting the alcantara seats in?No I'm saving the alcantara seats for another wagon project... if I had those in this wagon I would probably be asking a lot more.. I still feel like I'm leaving a little money on the table. I have to find the right buyer because the chassis has 261000 miles and even though the car drives like a 50000 mile car wonderfully people can't get over that number bring a trailer has set this mentality that low mileage is the way to go unfortunately but I'll find the right buyer there out there.
Low mileage cars are people that didn't get to drive their car much because they wanted to have a collector status car and the upside is that they get a quick easy sale I just have to work a little bit harder to stand out

Yeah, the way BaT has altered the enthusiast car market is wild. Good luck!
If it doesn't sell and you're magically in the PNW I'd love to come see it/consider buying it. An Orient Blue wagon with all the stuff you done is pretty much my ideal wagon :drool
