A little backstory about myself, my first car was a 2004 Pheonix Red Mitsubishi Lancer OZ Rally Racing Edition. Its funny now but I LOVED that car back in HS, had the coolest car after the kid with the brand new STI. I did very little maintenance on it but I'll be damned if it wasn't the cleanest lancer you've ever seen! Never died on me though, my trusty Red Rocket.
3403834039
Well that got me through college and a year of graduate school before going off to Medical School in the Caribbean. Perfect opportunity to sell off the Lancer and get something new when I return to the US. Well that time came and I wanted a classy, sophisticated yet sporty sedan. Spent about a month looking for the perfect car while studying for my first board exam before ultimately landing on the ZHP.
I bought the car on Oct 2016 with 107xxx miles from a BMW mechanic who included a box of misc parts and a basic maintenance record. He was selling it because he had just had purchased an X3 after having a newborn and he did't need another car. His original asking price was $9000 but my father, who was helping me with the purchase stated "I am not paying that much for an old BMW thats gonna break." I just knew this was a car I didn't want to give up (thank you mafia for that) so I was able to talk him down to $7500.
I have no pics on purchase day sadly but we picked it up at BMW South Atlanta where the PO had gotten a fresh oil change and replaced all the filters while he was work. I spent that entire first weekend decontaminating with clay and iron remover, then polished with my super cheap turtle wax polisher + meguiars ultimate compound that I had laying around, before topping with Collinite 845. Interior was treated with the Leather Masters kit from Detailers domain and Einzett cockpit premium.
After a couple of 12 hour days:
3402834029
Drove down to FL to start my clinical rotations
34030
Moved to Laurel, MD for a year to continue clinical rotations and met the guys at Rennwelt, thanks to the mafia again! Done quite a bit of work with them.
Here are the beautiful views out in Frederick, MD
34032
A look inside during a VCG replacement and finally got my M3 strut bar put in! Really wish I had thought to do the Vanos rebuild while it was open.
3403134037
Replaced my burnt bowls with the refurbished bowls from Clemsone46. Clear to see which was original and which was the replacement.
34033
Light output: HUUUUUGE difference. Went ahead and put some Osram CBIs and enjoyed ridiculous light output

Great! Specialty you like?
I'm applying to Family medicine and a few psychiatry programs. It was a hard decision for me
Finally, one of the things that was bothering me the most! Got rid of those horribly oxidized tails and replaced with some in better condition!
Refreshed on Left, Old and crusty on the right. Terrible pic but the sun was directly behind me

Welp driving back down to Ga for the holidays and I hit yet another pothole right outside of Manassas, Va. The tire didn't stand a chance and left me frustrated with a cracked rear wheel, a blown front strut and a bent front wheel.
Stay tuned for the suspension refresh... Coming sooner than later smdh. As I mentioned in another post elsewhere, I was pretty certain about going Koni, which is highly recommended here, but several people have asked me to reconsider Bilstein so now I'm conflicted. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190117/b892a76a95b895f40c6840ce2a9a035b.jpg

Sent from my SM-G955U using TapatalkUm for now I'm going to ignore it haha seems like it's just minor surface rust from water collecting beneath the sills. I did spray some quick sealant there before installing the M door sills so hopefully water won't continue to collect there. Eventually, in a year or so, I want to get some new bumpers and some paint/body work done so the rust will be addressed then.
I just hope OEM bumpers and other parts will continue to be available. I'm sorta pressed because I feel like support for the e46 isn't going to last forever

New update! New headlights!!
Ive been keeping my eye on a new set of Magnetti Marelli headlights because I didn't want to go the retrofit route. Well I checked eBay and found this set for $815 BRAND NEW! I instantly purchased and just received them. Packaging was excellent and the headlights seem to check out. They have the yellow AL sticker on the top and AL stamped on the lens cover.
I'll probably swap over the zkw lens from my originals tomorrow morning before putting those up for sale.
For anyone who may know, I posted a picture of the bottom of the headlight assembly. Do they include the mounting brackets? My suspicions tell me no, so I'll have to modify the existing or purchase new.

Thank you, it’s definitely the deal of the week! Just managed to take the old headlight assembly out and I’m REALLY debating swapping the zkw lenses in. I was never the guy to completely take apart a brand new, perfectly functioning set of headlights lol feels weird. Is it really worth it?

What could be the benefit of swapping the zkw lenses ? Better light output ... or just cosmetic ?
What could be the benefit of swapping the zkw lenses ? Better light output ... or just cosmetic ?
My understanding is a better cutoff which is and slightly improved brightness. I’m currently stuck rotating the adjustments knobs to get the projector housing out. I know these two take forever but I’ve been working on this step for well over an hour and my hands are getting raw. Getting closer to giving up haha
I couldn't take it anymore. After spending 10+ hours swapping the lenses over I had to give up for the day.
I managed to get the lenses swapped and discovered that the high beam socket had a broken tab, which isn’t a big deal. Unfortunately, I just couldn't get the driver side assembly to mount properly and the passenger side doesn't seem right. I decided to walk away and try again in the morning or take it to a body shop since I'd need the headlights aligned anyways [emoji55] I swear I hate working on this car. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190529/93a14c52d80b1b08307bb10917631cd6.jpg

Last view of the ZHP as she gets the suspension refresh completed. Turns out I had some rubbing with the Z4M FCABs which I'm attributing to a bad alignment so I'm hoping a fresh alignment will get things back into spec. Also getting my front passenger wheel straightened and repainted. Absolutely cannot wait to see what the refreshed e46 chassis is capable of.
Parts list as follows:
Bilstein B8 struts and shocks
H&R sport springs
Lemforder ZHP front Control Arms
Tie rods with dust boots
Z4M front control arm bushings
Strut tower reinforcement plates
Lemforder M3 rear trailing arm ball joints in place of upper and lower rear trailing arm bushings
Rogue engineering rear shock mount
M3 engine mounts
Replacement front and rear away bar bushingshttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200408/91d22dc15c193447ed99c0438ded1504.jpg

Yes I did, took it to the shop doing my suspension work and they got everything ligne up perfectly. Turns out I should have kept the mounting brackets loose to allow proper placement of the headlight housings then tighten everything down. Such a common sense solution that evaded me during the frustration of the install.

You are absolutely right, I did the guibo and the lower steering shaft joint a year or so ago and steering is tight.
It's done! The ZHP is slightly lowered on Bilstein B8s with H&R sport springs with all new supporting bushings.
Since the front passenger wheel was noticably bent, the shop had a guy they send wheels to straighten and refurb them for about $100. More on this later.
First impression: she's tight! Steering feels great, firm and precise. My goodness the Bilsteins are stiff. I had heard from multiple people that was going to be the case but I wanted to go with them anyway. Car feels almost what I'd imagine a 911 or similar sports car feels like suspension wise.
Unfortunately there's some issues.
1. I have been dealing with passenger side bent wheels for over a year now after a series of potholes impacts causing tire punctures on I-95. I had the rear wheel repaired and was still experiencing slight vibration at interstate speeds and horrible wheel wobble at about 85+ mph. After noticing an obviously bent front wheel, I was expecting a perfectly smooth ride after this recent repair. Unfortunately, that was not the case. Vibrations are definitely improves however I still get slight vibration at interstate speeds with worsening at 85+ mph. I can only assume that both attempts at straightening where done by eye and are not completely straight. At this point, I'm over these style 135s and plan on getting some Apex Arc 8s in the near future with replacement style 135s at a later date.
2. The suspension is absolutely wonderful when I'm around my parent's house in N. Georgia, where the roads are nice and curvy. Unfortunately, on my trip back down to Macon via I-75, I had to deal with poor interstate/road conditions in and around Atlanta and Macon. Here the Bilsteins are less than ideal and road imperfections are quite jarring. Honestly feels equal to or maybe even slightly worse than traveling on my original blown suspension.
Ultimately, I was looking to transition the ZHP out of daily driver duties in about a year or 2 so I think this is just going to accelerate that process.

Suspension Update: about 2k miles on the suspension and the Bilsteins have broken in nicely. Very firm but supple, exactly the feel I was going for. No more crashing on sharp bumps. I'm very happy with it. Still wrestling with getting the alignment dialed in with possible adjustable camber mounts but I really don't want to add more harshness...or cost. We shall see.
Next on the agenda: Passenger side window regulator is TOAST. The window creeps down on bumps. An OEM regulator is on the way.
Also working on a complete belt and pulley refresh + water pump since I didn't do that during my cooling system refresh. What is everything I need to complete the full pulley system besides the obvious things?

you may want to consider aluminum pulleys from somewhere like Turner/ECS. or you can go underdrive (i have the Rogue pulley kit) if you want a slight performance boost. if you want to do that, i would also recommend an upgraded water pump like the EMS Stewart unit.

The plastic ones last 60-80k which is the service interval for belts, pulleys and cooling system parts.
As far as the Stewart water pump, that upgrade is a waste of money. The composite or metal water pumps do the job just fine even on track vehicles.

Sent from my Pixel 4 XL using TapatalkI disagree on the stewart pump, respectfully. The stock pumps definitely do the job just fine. However in my old 325Ci I upgraded to the stewart pump and found my average temperatures on my temp gauge read slightly lower. I don't have any numeric figures to genuinely compare or back it up. But I even noticed it lower when running in conjunction with a set of Turner Underdrive Pulleys.
In hindsight I wish I would have held on to those pulleys. I think I sold them for 80 bucks. But I didn't notice any real benefit from a honestly other than slightly stiffer steering on my 325 rack. That could have been in my head though. With pulleys, intake, and axle back I dyno'd 165whp lol

We used to have a thread with a lot of us putting down our operating temperature. . .
There it is. (http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?6575-OBC-19-7-00-Watcha-go-doityourself&p=468038#post468038) 2 had data with Stewart water pump including me who went from 96 to 93 degrees C.
interesting info. I'll probably get an OEM and a stewart in a few years
Went over to the dealership and got a proper alignment over at the dealership after they had a special going for $158. Of course, my spec was way off which I suspected.
Interestingly, I had the strut tower reinforcement plates installed with my suspension AND already had the M3 strut tower brace installed, so the tech pulled me aside to tell me that there wasn't enough purchase on the nut and he didn't feel comfortable messing with the front camber since my zhp is mildly lowered.
The guys who put on the suspension didn't tell me that so now I'm at a dilemma. Is there a front strut mount that has longer bolts?

Actually yes there is. When I bought my car one of the strut mounts had been replaced and the bolts were much longer on it. But I threw those parts out long ago so I have no idea what the part numbers were. Perfect time to upgrade to E36 M3 strut mounts though. :) I'm running them with reinforcement plates and ACS rep bar and it has enough thread for the nuts.

I'm not at all sensitive to tramlining so I can't comment on that with these mounts. I wouldn't even know how to detect it.

Well feels pretty good so far but I getting a high frequency vibration at speed on the hwy. I'm thinking my wheel bearings are toast. I also have some cupping on my tires per the bmw tech but I'm not sure if that could cause the vibration.
Wheels are balanced? Have they thrown any of the weights?
Should be. I've had 2 wheels replaced now brand new OEMs and had them installed at a tire shop so they should be good to go.
I guess I could go and get everything rebalanced as that's not much money.

No and I don't think I've ever experienced that in any car. The roads but pretty bad in NC but I've never seen visible ruts except when it's only slightly wet outside.
Also for vibrations, 9/10 times it's wheel or tire related. Also check the side to side play, there is a certain spec for that on E46 and even the slightest amount of rust on the hub face can cause vibrations.

If you bought your tires at Discount Tire they give you free balancing for the life of the tires.
Yes! Biggest qualm with the E46 was the lack of Bluetooth functionality. If I get to experience what everyone else has, I will be a happy boy! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210715/aa5f411b79d354081cc96aa7b0f59378.jpg

Well its been a bit of a headache getting everything working properly. Didn't realize my ZHP had the iPod adapter installed, which can really mess with things so I'm still working on getting that removed with those pesky round pins. Thankfully, at the moment, I have everything working as it should thanks to Ted, who provided excellent customer service and answered all my emails and questions, many of which were due to my incompetence [emoji28]
Unfortunately, I broke my center AC vent getting it out to make space so waiting on a replacement. Gonna try and remove the glove box to get better access behind the radio in order to have it sit flush like from factory. Currently the mass of wires really prevents that.
Update:
Got the bluebus to work as intended and managed to clean up all the wiring mess I had with the iPod adapter. I used this tool to release the clips in the radio harness.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001C9ZMJW?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I thought removing the harness would allow Bluetooth to display on the radio when selecting the different modes but it appears there's still a fight between CD and Bluetooth. Minor inconvenience that doesn't really affect performance.
I also finally managed to get some long overdue maintenance done. Basically all of the cooling system minus the radiator, which was already done, as well as the belts and pulleys. Feels good knowing I don't have to worry about my expansion tank blowing up for awhile.
Unfortunately no pics. Completely forgot.
Next up: gloss black driver side door surround trim ordered and on the way from the dealer

Interesting that you're still having this issue... glad to hear that you have resolved most of your issues now though :thumbsup

Yeah not sure why but it seems purely cosmetic and I never really switch to the other options so no big deal.
Ah yes, the trim…It’s. So.expensive! Thankfully I only need one after sourcing new passenger side clips and gluing them in. It’s still holding strong. Drivers side failed after a week, partly due to my measuring error but alas, New part on the way.

She lives! After a bit of a hiatus, I'm back!
Things completed:
Rebuilt VANOS with OEM solenoids
G.A.S OEM DISA
Spark plugs with VCG
Coolant pipes under intake manifold
CCV system
Intake boots
She EATS now. Such a fun car on the back roads especially coming from my new daily [emoji6]
Next step are new bumpers and injectors because I'm getting slow starts with short stops. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20221124/19fa66de868aece627c18d31c5d0e110.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20221124/dea62e93582c9d8d146d45382c979495.jpg

Very nice! Glad things are back in ordered and you're able to enjoy!
I'm local to Atlanta and just got back into an E46 (330i mtech1), hopefully see you around sometime!
Replaced the starter, injectors at 174xxx miles after she wouldn't start. It sat for about 2-3 months until I finally decided to just tow it to the Indy. DIY work under the intake manifold just scares me.
Finally can take her to work a few days/week.
Debating swapping out the H&R sports for Eibachs. Ride is a bit too stiff on these rough ATL roads. I almost feel like it's compromising grip.

It's actually not bad to do. I watched a YouTube video from 50sKid on removing the intake manifold and it was a very easy process. Also there is not too many vaccum lines attached to the intake manifold on the ZHP so this is a very easy job to do. To me the hardest part of removing the intake manifold was popping off the fuel rail from the fuel injectors (not hard) and not losing the nuts securing the intake manifold to the motor.
Once the intake manifold was removed, I had so much access to the motor when I did my cooling system overhaul that the entire process was so much easier to work on.

I would say install Bilstein PSS-10s. I am glad I did this to my ZHP and the car now feels so planted and it is nice having damping adjustability (10 different settings) to set the ride up. Right now I'm at 5 and am very pleased with the feel I'm getting from driving my car.

When I installed my Bilstein coilovers, I installed the Ground Control camber kit. They are shown on post # 173 on my Mystic Adventure project thread on page 18.
http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?23459-My-Mystic-Adventure&p=604942#post604942
Post #974 on page 98 shows the actual install of my coilovers and the setting on my camber kit which I had set to -1 degree as I wanted to have my front tires more square to the pavement.

I have always had coilovers with front camber kit installed on my BMWs but this time around I wanted something much better than the BC Racing coilovers so I went with my Bilstein/Ground Control Camber Kit setup and have no regrets going this route. When it is time to refresh my suspension on my M3 I will be doing the same there. :)
This was one of the first things I wanted to do when I first purchased the car! A 6 speed trans swap!
I had to drive up to DC to get it done but this is the only person I'd trust to do something like this!
40038
"Lifetime fluid"
I did a AT fluid flush about 50k miles ago with some Febi fluid which worked well for me. Out with the old!
40039
Trans going in. Had about 200k miles on it. Im at ~175k on my car. Not ideal but unfortunately not many options these days.
While we were in there, we went ahead and replaced the clutch and flywheel, refreshed all the shifter bushings and went with the OEM performance short shift kit.
40040
Rear diff bushings were shot and were replaced.
Everything works and looks as if factory. Just have to delete the automatic trans cooler and temp sensor.
40037
40034
I went back and forth over the diff ratio but settled with the stock 3.07. Kept the automatic axles and the finned diff cover.
40036
Car already feels so alive after the VANOS refresh and even more so now with the 6 speed so I’m VERY content with the stock diff for the time being.
I need to work on some of the cosmetics next. Probably a front bumper and the headliner. Will probably redo the headliner, A/B/C pillars and rear deck in alcantara.

It is everything! The 6 speed and the VANOS refresh make this an entirely different car from the one I bought.
Put in the aluminum M dead plate.
After the 6 speed swap, I believe my ZHP is finally worthy!

It doesn’t quite fit with the OEM rubber mats, rubs just slightly on the bottom. I suppose that makes sense since it’s probably thicker.
Another thing, anyone else have a gap along the side of the dead plate assembly? Right beneath the hood latch, I can fit my fingers between the dead plate and carpet

Updates: with the 6 speed swap came the mod bug.
Took advantage of the bavsound Black Friday sale and went ahead and impulse purchased a brand new Gruppe M intake from vivid racing. Super excited to try that out!
Unfortunately, the red battery light has been flashing on/off for the past 2 days so I’m probably going to need an alternator soon. Will wait for a new alternator before putting in the intake.
So far my rear Harmon Kardon speakers have been in really decent shape. No tears or dents.
I’ll tackle the fronts another day.

Completed the bavsound install today.
Thoughts: definitely a plug and play kit but took some finagling to get the additional wiring tucked out of the way. Rears much easier than the fronts on a sedan.
I would definitely recommend getting some door panel clips because you will break them.
Sound: a noticeable improvement in clarity and punch with a good bit of thump. I wouldn’t say it’s a massive change but definitely appreciated. I’m not yet able to hear how it sounds at speed as I wait for an alternator.
I was already left stranded after pushing my luck so the ZHP will remain parked until I get the alternator. I didn’t think a car with non functional alternator would die if it was already running but it certainly did, in the most dramatic death I’ve seen. All the Warning lights, dash stopped responding, misfires and shakes.
I replaced the battery to get back home. There was a Bosch unit from 2016🫣

I think only older Diesels can run without an alternator once started.
Are you still on the OEM headunit/radio?

I remember ZHPizza saying he didn't hear much improvement initially, but then when he sat in another person's E46 with a stock sound system six months later he could really sense the difference.
After 3 different orders, 2 cancellations and 1 lost package I finally received my Bosch alternator. I had the oval connector in my car which has proven quite difficult to find. Ultimately was able to get it quite quickly through RockAuto.
Todays objective:
1. Alternator
2. Electric fan conversion
3. Gruppe M intake
2. Oil filter housing gasket! The darn thing is finally leaking. I had bought a Viton gasket years ago but never installed it.
There was quite a mess back there.

Things went pretty smoothly.
Got the clutch fan out.
I just had an eerie feeling that the functional days of this fan clutch were numbered after 177k miles and I’d rather not have a catastrophic ending.
I was ready to put everything back together.
Then this. 40163 stripped the T50 bolt on the tensioner using a T45 bit because I’m an idiot but also why is the material so soft on something you have to pull on for leverage.
Thankfully was able to get the belt on using a long screwdriver and some leverage.
Intake thrown on because it was well past dark and I had been working on this for over 6 hours. I’ll mount the bracket tomorrow.
40164
Gruppe M intake quick review:
She howls, I love it!
I wasn’t always a fan of how it looks, always seemed out of place to me. It’s Much better in person.
Electric fan review:
Very straight forward install. Went with OEM BMW because it was in stock at the local dealership and I was caught at a moment of weakness. Definitely notice extra oomph, likely from the clutch fan delete.
I have a bmw performance intake coming shortly so comparison and possible sale soon come.

first off, nice work. that's a solid day. fortunately these cars are easy to work on (unless you utter the words "rear wheel bearing" and then said bearing decides to drain every atom of hope from your being) - my E91 is notably more complex to deal with (fortunately it's RWD). ain't nobody got time for that.
secondly, i've never had a gruppe m intake, and i'd like to give it a listen. if you decide to sell, PM me?

Gruppe M was cool but got around to installing this unit!
A bit of a hassle to take apart and clean out but finally figured everything out.
Fitment was ok. I really have to slam the hood to get it to close properly now.
Sound: a little disappointing as it sounds fairly stock but if you get on it, you’ll get a some induction noise like the Gruppe M. Still will put a smile on your face.
I’d say it’s probably 20% of the Gruppe M sound wise.
Looks: killer! I love how this thing looks in the engine bay.
Something very purposeful and Motorsport about it. As Ive mentioned previously, I always felt the Gruppe M looked out of place.
Overall, the BMWP intake is here to stay and while I’ll miss the Gruppe M, I will be selling it to fund a pair of replacement style 135 wheels. I somehow have two which are bent. Again.

I agree, the BMW Performance intake looks more OEM and appropriate for the engine bay compared to the Gruppe M. But since I hear the car all of the time and only look at the engine bay once and a while, I stuck with the GruppeM for the acoustics. I am a child so here we are. You'll be happy either way.

Sorry for dumb question: When you did the Dr.Vanos replacement, it was just plug & play correct? You didn't need to time the engine?
