You're probably ok as long as the seal is good because it naturally has some holes for the cabling and stuff. I'd check using a hose on the outside of the window with the window shut and door closed just to make sure. It would suck to find out on a really rainy day and realize you need to seal your doors and soak up the water from your floor boards - hint, hint.

Not trying to scare you into buying a new one because you're barrier is prob fine but I think you'd need to purchase the sealant separately. I'd definitely test before buying anything. If you need a baseline test the rear door as well. OEM is some type of butyl tape but I used this sealant:

I haven't had mine apart yet but I'd think this stuff would be like the oem stuff. We have some at work and it feels like it would work great and be easier to remove than silicone if you have to take it apart again in the future.

Had intentions on fixing my VANOS stud, but that went awry. The stud threads into the head.. but when Terra and I tried to torque it (only 8 ft-lbs) the nut would just pull the stud out. Red Loctite didn't even work. Worked probably about 5 hours today; took the VCG and VANOS off to get to the hole..

But we also drained my oil.. Now to remember to put oil back in it before I start it back up. I guess I'll be taking my moms car to work tomorrow :(

Inspection came back with few items needed:
- perform fuel injector service
- replace left lower ball joint
- replace thrust arm bushing
- and the OFHG

Hopefully the shimmy i feel will be gone after replacing the thrust arm bushing...

I can probably do the OFHG, not sure about 2 & 3.... is #1 really necessary?

and lastly, i bought a performance exhaust....

I have talked to a few VA police officers during my many travels to Manassas and they told me just to make sure I have my radar detector dismounted and put away. good questions Dane, but i also dont know the answers... but i think the thurst arm bushing = control arm bushing?

I decided to get a 2nd opinion and went to my indy, put my car on the lift and they checked the bushings, they cant find anything wrong with it...
no leak/crack...

whats even funnier is they showed me my brake pads and advised me that it need to be replaced very very soon, but the report from BMW said its still okay?

so heres my plan, im taking my car to a guy who is working as a tech in Morristown BMW, and he told me he'll gladly inspect my car again (based on the
initial recommendation from JMK BMW)... hopefully things will get sorted out...

for now, im sticking to my initial plan, change the auto trans fluid and differential fluid too... next is the OFHG...

I want to get a LI as well but for now it will hold off.

Just to mention as well, the Escort Redline is the same exact thing as the STi (Infact it's the same company).

Both are non-leaky detectors. Go with what you like.

I wanted a redline, but never venture into VA for the matter so I figured it's not worth to get a non-leaky detector...I'd rather have quite cities.

With that being said, any Escort/Beltronics/V1 Product now is an awesome product. You really can't go wrong and every company can cater to individual needs

Did the SES come back?

Maybe you're burning those bugs >< or do you think that rubber gasket we lost fell on the exhaust and is burning up? That would smell terrible

Or it is oil - perhaps the VCG is leaking at the rear passenger corner, dripping onto the exhaust, and making smoke.

Ryan,

If you have your V1 mounted you will get pulled over and possibly have your radar detector confiscated. At best the police officer will document the serial number of your detector and give it back to you with a ticket.

Best to put your radar detector away when you enter VA...

I did the first wax of 2012 but, what makes it so special is that I’m 600 miles away from home, living in a hotel with the car sleeping outside for an extended period for the first time in it life. The wax was done in a state park five minutes away from my hotel and the additional picks where shot in other areas of the park throughout this week.

All this was done to get up at the but -crack of dawn tomorrow, to drive an hour plus to Nashville, TN for Coffee”n”Cars. Picks of last week’s are at the end and I did experience rain for the better part of the drive to get there last week. Because of the poor attendance, It’s been said that the exotics will be out tomorrow instead of the usual first Saturday of the month, let’s see if it all comes true.

I have been refused at local "franchises" in my lowered e30 on stock wheels, they want to do it with 150 pound special tool to simulate driver in the drivers seat and it wont read correct for them to have no responsibility for whatever may or may not happen with normal wear issues or any accidents.

I wouldn't want to negotiate with someone that is uncomfortable with the job, find a place that specializes in alignments and corner balancing.

Replaced stock kidney grills with piano black grills. Let me tell you all something, that job sucked. I am a fairly patient guy and not bad at putting things together. I struggled with this simple job. I struggled to the extent of breaking two of the plastic tabs and becoming frustrated to the point of almost throwing both of them down the street. Anyway, they are on but the one is slightly loose due to the tab being broke. Anything I can do? It's not going anywhere but it bothers me a bit.

danewilson77
05-13-2012, 04:37 AM
They probably only have the alignment machine, that uses the pins, in the wheels for the alignment. When I used to take mine to Casey BMW (before my BBS), they would have to send it to their other alignment machine at Casey Chevrolet. You can see the difference below...

Additionally....some shops....when they see you're lowered on coilovers won't touch it because they know they can't achieve the spec. Idiots.

See the pin holes? BBS rims and oem BMW rims have these alignment holes.

No pin holes (non stock wheel). Alignment tool has to "grab" the edge of the rim.

Are they aftermarket or BMW Performance grills?

You could put a touch of super glue there, you could wrap the tab in gorilla tape (removable and black), so that it holds tighter or you could stick some 3M exterior mounting tape over the tab.

Anyway, I wasn't sure I was going to like them, as I've never actually seen them in person installed on a car. I really think they look great though- I was pretty surprised/happy with them!

Does BMW offer free initial diagnostics? or do you have to pay for them to crack the hood? Infiniti gave the initial diagnostic free then you had to pay if you wanted any work done. Was great for getting their techs to eyeball the problem and then fixing it yourself.

My auto leveling lights feature and "turn with steering wheel" are not working. I reset the battery once and it fixed it for a week and then next time i drove at night it was messing up again.

When you are reinstalling the Kidneys, keep them together as a unit, and just shove them through the hood. That's how they do it at the factory and it doesn't take forever to get all the clips mated up with each other.

No. Please explain.

When autocrossing, or driving on a track...you have to be focused so much on the course ahead...you don't really know where the position of the wheel is.

It sounds crazy, but you can't focus exactly where the wheel position is. Add on the fact that you're driving on the border of grip and no grip, and the car is sliding...you have no clue where "straight" is.

So, the yellow tape is a bright indicator that attracts your eyes when you're driving ever so slightly so you know where straight is.

Get it?

Multiple times last auto-x I had no clue where my wheels were at. So hopefully this helps

Replaced the fuel filter myself last Friday. Was going to have my mechanic do it because I hate the idea of getting sprayed with gasoline, but the day I walked in (without an appointment) he was busy, so I figured I should do it at least once in my life. I pulled the fuel pump fuse and cranked 'till it died, so there wasn't any pressure in there, but the fuel return line dripped a lot into the drain pan. It was dripping so fast, I gave up the idea of replacing the hose clamps so I could get the hoses onto the new filter as quickly as possible, then re-used the old hose clamps. Some notched plastic prybars eased removal of the lines from the old filter.

Then a plastic water jug with about 8 oz of dirty gasoline sat on my back patio for 4 days until I could run it to the local hazmat recycling center. I was hoping it wouldn't spontaneously combust.

today i did a lot for the ZHP, or at least it feels like i did, since i spent roughly 7 hours on it lol. the order of business:

- changed the PS fluid. 2 quarts of Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF. had already put 1 quart in a few months ago. wanted to make sure all the fluid was replaced. got a little messy but not biggie...

- then came time to wash. to my knowledge the car had never been through a proper wash, so i decided to use some of the detailing products i bought from detailers domain a while ago.
- at the self car wash, did a pre-rinse to get all the bird crap and most dirt off, then pre-soak > foaming brush > rinse > soak again > high pressure soap > rinse.
- then i used the Aquartz Iron Cut. used the whole bottle, sprayed every inch of the car and wheels. rinse again.
- next i took a spin to get the wheels aired out a bit, so as i could then hit them with some Sonax. two rounds of Sonax, the second time using a Swissvax brush, then rinse.
- hand dry the entire car and wheels.
- now came time to give the ZHP first proper claying. also happened to be the first time i ever clayed an entire car. spent probably an hour getting every single square inch of the car. used some diluted cleaner in a spray bottle as clay lube. went through almost an entire bar of clay.
- another hand dry
- finally, vacuumed the interior and floor mats.

currently enjoying a beer. Brooklyn Lager to be exact. here's a couple shots of the finished product. i originally wanted to get a round of wax in, as well as use the Dr Color Chip kit to address the dozen paint chips or so all over AND the Quixx Scratch Remover to address the half dozen clear coat scratches....but i ran out of daylight, and honestly i'm freakin' exhausted! so i will do those last couple things this weekend...

Well today I:
-washed the car. No detailing since I detailed and sealed it about a couple months ago. So it's ok. Going to wax tomorrow.
-removed all door and bumper trim. Used magic eraser on them and back to black to restore the trim.
-removed front bumper which was much easier than I thought. Then I resprayed the front lower bumper grill gloss black.
-cleaned the engine bay. This was my first engine bay cleaning ever so it's decent but next time will be better.
-put the car up on 4 jackstands, removed all 4 wheels and cleaned them inside and out and dressed the tires.
-quickly cleaned wheel wells
-detailed interior. Vacuum, 303 aero, windows, etc.
-reglued my sagging pillars AGAIN with the correct 3M glue instead of the locktite I used last time which didn't work.

Here's some pics from today.

Then I found this while cleaning. One of my rear wheels has different markings than the other 3. It's all the same markings, just in a different place. Installed new rear Hankooks the other day. It only took 1/2 oz of weight on the right rear. The left side didn't need any weights. They may be heavy but the 135's must but be pretty well made to balance that well. Hankook must do a pretty good job on constructing the V12's also. My last set had none on the left rear and a couple of ounces of weight on the left. Wheels are in the same positions as before.....curbed one on the right side.

It's fabulous! I had a great sense of accomplishment, even though it was a very minor task, that I had a bunch of my engine lying around the garage, I changed a part, and I put it back together.

I think I'll change the VCG again after 45 or 50k miles and not wait for 70k. The rubber had completely plasticized (is that a word?) that sealed the spark plug wells. That took a while to get off. I actually had a piece snap off and fall down into the engine block, but fortunately, it was right where I could reach it with my needle nose pliers. Phewf.

I'm ordering a set of 10mm for Dane, and hopefully I'll be able to order myself of a set of 15mm. I fitted one of the 15s up front and it was perfect. I can't for Lucy to have stance.

yesterday i used the Quixx Scratch Remover to address a few scratches on the passenger side door. It works very well on smaller, shallower scratches, less so on the longer deep ones (obviously, duh). I had one long one that I worked on for quite some time and never truly got satisfied with, but on about 4-5 smaller ones it got rid of them almost completely.

I also tried to get started with the Dr ColorChip kit, but I realized that you really want to let the touch-up paint sit for a while (hour or so) in order to let it bond well to the chip. I wiped away after a few mins and it didn't seem to yield very good results. Then between the mosquitoes and heat and dwindling daylight I said screw it and called it a night. This weekend...

You would be amazed on how much of this "leather" is engineered leather and not full leather... Just like the alcantara is Engineered to be close to suede but last longer.

Need to find some kind of cover that will essentially delete the arm rest. For now I'm going to see if I can actually get used to not having it there. Going to be doing mostly city driving/ spirited driving it seems. Shouldn't matter, but it's always the little things that you miss.

I discovered how the Parking Brake sensor works and I found a co-axial cable as well as some other plugs that I'm sure I can delete from the interior harness.

just picked my car up from the local BMW dealer.
had all my pre road trip done:
oil change - purring like a baby tiger
power steering fluid change - I could SWEAR that the steering is lighter now. It seemed before the steering was very very heavy, but now its just slightly heavy. Maybe its in my head?
transmission fluid - another "maybe in my head," but it seems like it shifts easier too
diff fluid - might as well!
parking brake adjusted (again) - we will see if it holds on San Francisco's inclines/declines without me having to stand on the seats and pull up on the brake :)
rear subframe inspection - "no signs of wear or cracks"
BMW "spa service" - pretty much a thorough interior/exterior/trunk/engine compartment detailing. I am VERY happy with the results
AUX kit install - I don't have time before this weekend to put it in, so they ware happy to do it for me. works great. will love having tunes on my road trip to Tahoe.
Steve's new Nav disc - Thanks Steve! Unfortunately my old co worker's address subdivision is so new, its apparently not on the newer disc either! Which is might make sense since his house was under construction around or about 2-3 years ago.Ah well. I have a navigator and iPhones and iPads, etc. :-) And the disc will help out plenty in other ways. btw, my old disc was actually the one that came with the car (2004!).

Next week: ordering Bluetooth parts and the Intravee II

PS - BMW sells these neat little canvas "oil bags" which you can velcro to the side of your trunk and holds 1 qt of oil and has a funnel/gloves, etc in it. For only 5 bucks. Pretty neat :) Link so you can see a pic: http://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E46-M3-S54_3.2L/Search/Oil_Bag/ES1885136/

Sometimes I get low on PS fluid and the steering gets very heavy, so it's conceivable that a fluid change would affect the steering feel.

Need to find some kind of cover that will essentially delete the arm rest. For now I'm going to see if I can actually get used to not having it there. Going to be doing mostly city driving/ spirited driving it seems. Shouldn't matter, but it's always the little things that you miss.

If someone is in need of an arm rest you can PM me and we can work something out.

The early e46s didnt have the arm rest standard. You can buy the center console without armrest for cheap $. Or find someone with a 99 323 that wants to trade. :)

Motivation to flush your PS fluid can be found in the form of a BMW Service Info Bulletin. Download it HERE (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17676561/BMW%20docs/SIB%2032%2019%2005%20E46_PSPumpTech.pdf).

I dont know what I would do without my armrest. I would give up my sunroof before I gave up my armrest!!! ....from my cold, dead elbows I say! haha

wow I wonder if my stiff steering had anything do do with this. I am glad I insisted they flush my system out. I should also point out that my fluid was NOT low.
PS. where do all these really informative and interesting TSBs come from? Is there a site that has them all somewhere?

Right now I'm just trying it out. If I do act on it, it will be new, I don't want someones 13 year old center console :rofl
I want the Euro Tray and the coin holder delete, as well as smoker's package delete. That should be it for the interior. My main motivation for removal of the arm rest is because my friend sat on it when he had to crawl through the Drivers side. Any bump in the road results in a squeak that will drive any man, no matter how tough, insane.

I'd give up my sunroof in a heartbeat. I'm going to be doing a lot of City Driving/ Spirited drives Serves me no point to have an armrest right now. But I'm just trying it out for now. It is definitely different...

I believe the term you are looking for is "Because Racecar."

Yesterday I had my indie drain and flush the transmission fluid. Went from Royal Purple Synchromax to Redline MTL. Had 15,000 miles on the RP fluid and it seemed to be performing fine but shifts didn't feel as smooth as when new... I would say the smoother shifting lasted for about 10,000 miles with the RP. With the new MTL, it feels very similar to the old RP fluid, perhaps just a touch smoother. Sent fluid sample to Blackstone Labs.

When I first asked him to do it a few weeks ago, he said that it would be overdoing the maintenance to replace the tranny fluid with only 15,000 miles, but I insisted, partly because I had already bought the fluid and a proper BMW flat/hollow drain plug to replace the generic/solid drain plug I put in 2 years ago.

Two weeks ago paid off the ZHP loan. At the time my credit union only offered low rates on used cars MY 2004 or newer, so I got a 3-year signature loan from LendingClub.com. Paid it off after 2 years and 3 months. Hopefully won't need to get another car loan for a few years.
