Looks good Charlie! What's your criteria for switching?

I have been running on my PSS since spring and decided that I wanted to extend their life another whole season so I swapped sets today. This autumn I'll be getting a set of Conti DWS to put on my Beyern Mesh wheels...it will be about time for me :)

@Ryan... I know you love these wheels ;)

Why Charlie?!!?!? I have a spare lying around unopened NIB.

I got mine in spring before SIGFest so that I could do my VANOS rebuild, VCG, Ignition Coils, and plugs. I ordered my VCG and extra gaskets from ECS Tuning. This was back in April...:)

Thanks for the offer though :biggrin ... It will be awhile before I will need another VCG... hopefully ;)

Lots of stuff done to my ZHP the past few days:

- Enco B146 (Dynavin Clone) installed
- OFHG replaced
- Cooling system refresh
- Aux fan to Electric Fan conversion

Next on my list is to get the correct bracket now that I have a Navi, plus upgrade the nav software from iGo8 to iGo Primo (not sure how to do it yet)

Try this. Seems pretty simple - take out the SD card and save the new files you want. iGo Primo instead of iGo 8. You might have to spend some time in the menus so the dynavin references the right file.

Garage is nice cause we have 10 recessed pot lights and two tracks alone the back celling with the adjustable can lights, so I can point the can lights down at my engine bay when I'm working on the car!5299

cakM3, great photos. It is amazing how much pitting there is on all the exposed aluminum/metal parts. Then I noticed Rhode Island and remembered all the salt issues we had when I was growing up in Ohio. It really brought back memories of working on cars with my dad - busting knuckles and rounding heads all the time. I really dont miss it!

It reminds me to be appreciative of how well the weather out here treats our babies. Take care and best of luck.

Removed my wipers, cowl, mirror and outer electronics half of the rain sensor from my windshield in preparation for getting it replaced on Wed. I figured I would do this myself to save a little money and also so the installers have less of a chance of screwing something up since they don't do a whole lot of BMW windshields around here.

I was out for a drive Friday night and going into the sunset it was like looking at 10,000 tiny prisms on my windshield with all the little pits on it. Can't wait to see the difference!

It took me a little while to figure out how to take the sensor apart, to separate the inner electronics half, from the actual sensor that came glued onto the new glass.

At first I found this picture online but later found out this is an older, pre-02 style....

http://mrmaico.smugmug.com/Cars/BMW-ZHP-misc/i-TjTSS2b/0/M/Rain-sensor-early-style-M.jpg

I went back out to the car and was just poking around on mine and realized there are two latches on each side that slide down, towards the cowl to release the latches.

Here's a pic of the sensor on the new glass with the latches released.....

I wouldn't care if they were the OE Phillips bulbs, or even $30 Morimoto bulbs. But no. These are the $190 Osram CBI bulbs. I paid $190 for freaking bulbs for one to last 7 months.. and I don't even really drive at night. Screw this.

Yes! That is one thing I love about the E39 over the E46. It's a better cruiser/ long distance car. I prefer driving my fathers E39 on the freeway than my E46 on the freeway. It handles pretty damn good too, not as good as the E46, but with the bilsetin hd's and oe sport springs it can definitely tear up the road.

Sent from Williamsburg, VA USA

Thanks Dane. When you say it should come with the sensor, do you mean the complete sensor, both pieces, or just the half that is glued to the windshield? Mine just came with the piece glued to the windshield.

In the TIS instructions for windshield replacement BMW mentions having to "initialize" the rain/light sensor after changing a windshield. Never heard anyone mention having to do that before and since I'm not changing the electronics half of the sensor I'm hoping it wouldn't need to be initialized since my car should recognize the sensor I'm installing. Make sense?

Anyone ever had to initialize a rain/light sensor after w/s replacement? Maybe that's why a lot of people complain about their rain sensors not working properly? They had a w/s replaced and didn't initialize the sensor?:dunno

From TIS.................... "Version with rain sensor or rain/light sensor:
Removing rain sensor or rain/light sensor, refer to repair instructions .
After replacing windscreen:
- Initialize rain sensor or rain/light sensor
- Refer to function description in DIS (Diagnosis and Information System)"

Today, I gave Wobbie a quick detail with Meguiar's Quick Detailer to keep her looking fresh from Sunday's wash. Also gave her a much needed vacuum. Hasn't been vacuumed in almost 2 months (hell the wash was almost 2 months late in itself). Looks soooo cherry now...

And finally did a Mr. Clean Magic Erase job on my steering wheel and all buttons in the interior. It literally looked like the steering wheel had 136k miles of oily hand stains on it all around the rim and on the buttons, and now looks brand friggin' new.

Looks awesome Botond! My new ride has some wear on the armrest on the driver center console and passenger side door where the leather looks worn. Would magic eraser work on this or should I pony up for a new armrest for the M?

P.S. I will be meeting Charlie around 2pm tomorrow in Waterbury for lunch if you are available and want to hang out.

Well, what kind of "wear" are we talking about? Is it just shiny, or is it developing cracks? If it's cracks, then most definitely shell out the money for new parts. Hell, it's an E60 M5; I would just do EVERYTHING right and just buy a new part. That car deserves nothing less!
If it's just shiny, try the Magic Eraser, though don't do it too much because I think it'll dry out the leather. Instead, use Leatherique. That stuff does wonders to leather.

BTW, Charlie is going to Waterbury on Thursday. I asked to come in early and leave early that day at work, so I could meet up with you guys granted you can wait about an hour. Stratford ain't exactly close to Waterbury. :)

He just texted me telling me he got mixed up haha, yea its just worn on the passenger side and cracked on the center console. I will fork out the cash for a new center arm rest, luckily it is just one little piece that slides out. I will be "working from home" Thursday so I threw it out there to charlie that you guys are more than welcome to come here for a couple of hours because the wife wont be home from work until 8:30. We can either meet Charlie in Waterbury or both of you just meet at my place and have some drinks/hang out/drive in the M. Not in that order of course.

There's a guy at our BMW dealer that we all know as well. He has a Carbon Black e90 M3 with a bunch of goodies on it like an ESS Supercharged, Brembo's, 2x ZCP rims (one black set w/ race slicks & one OE finish set with normal Pilot Sport II's), a SuperSprint Exhaust, front lip and probably a bunch of other things that I'm probably missing

Long story short, he's in about 2-3x a month getting shit resprayed. He gets 1 rock chip and has an entire hood or bumper resprayed. He also rips off his lip a lot too.. so that's been re-fit a bunch of times as well. But he always gets the treatment. His car has tons of swirls anyways so I'm not really sure why his treatment is the way it is.

Ayayay. Today wasn't a good day for the ZHP.

- Wiper motor is going out. It makes a horrible noise and makes the wipers skip terribly at the top and bottom of its travel. Lifting up the wipers, I can hear annoying binding noises at these locations. Bought new (used) linkage + motor + wiper arms + nuts - $98 shipped :) Easy fix, but something I really think is stupid to spend money on. It shouldn't break in the first place. I'm going to try and fix the old motor + linkage and see if I can make it work properly again, then sell it.

- Had to buy new FCABs since my old ones prematurely failed. Disappointing. I bought Meyle HDs, and oembimmerparts is RMAing my Lemforders and giving me the difference in cost between the two. I just don't think ZHPs should use Lemforder - our setup is too aggressive for such a soft bushing. BMW never should have done a "one size fits all" method with bushings on all of their trim levels (except M3)

- Got the flexible steering coupling, because freaking I wanna get my tight steering back already

- Have to now get another alignment since I will be doing FCABs. But, there's a good groupon deal on alignments in my area. 50% off.

- Should also balance my tires since I'm there and it's cheap

:(

So...hopefully all of this will end up costing me a whole lot less than it seems, assuming I can sell the old linkage after fixing it.

I plan on cleaning my matte grille tomorrow and also my alcantara wheel is showing some wear in the 8-9 o'clock position. Weird because I always make sure my hands are clean before driving it.. sometimes I even wash my hands before driving it!

Anyone have any cleaning suggestions? Just a clean towel and soapy water, but not saturating it?

@Justin, they're posted here and there but yes I do need to update that thread. Go look in the engine bay thread

Edit: the E21 door handle visible on the drivers side will soon be replaced with the correct 2002 version when I take the door card off and re-glue the vinyl to the card better (it's coming loose in a few places). I also have to finish up the E24 rear bucket swap which I have all the parts for but haven't had time to deal with yet (need to re-upholster the seats, armrest and build a rear shelf). Next will be fixing the cracks in the dash and finding a center console for either an early 2002 or probably a 1602, let me know if you see one in decent shape.

it's not the smartest idea ever but they are the original optional belts from 11/68 when the car was built, OO apparently had some taste. It mounts on the horizontal metal under the window between the B and C pillars. They aren't uncomfortable but they are a huge PITA to adjust. Honestly I will probably eventually get a cage and run a 5-point setup, but a full frankenstein style engine swap will come first. Imagine this car but even more crazy...

Mine has maybe 3k miles on and has been on for maybe 10 months, maybe a year.

I changed it but I knew it wasn't leaking, it was the sensor inside the hose that took a dump. I figured while I'm down there I will change out the hose... Never again, lol.

ECS was roughly the same with shipping. ECS cowl was only like ~$60, but shipping was killer. I tried to get it with my other order, but shipping was like $20 more so I just went to the dealer - sad day.

ECS price w/o tax - $53.55
Shipping - $39.84
Total w/ tax = $97.54

Dealer total - $80.33

For future reference ebmwparts.com is ran by BMW of Peabody in Peabody, MA and sells the sedan cowl (51718208483) for 49.36 + 10 shipping. It's not so bad, granted it hurts when I put weight on my foot, and it def feels like something's missing, I wouldn't say it messes with my balance to much, at first it was odd but within 5 mins it does not, I may have been focusing on it so much that I made myself think it feels different but it's not so bad now! A few weeks of healing and iv gotta come back for a checkup, and have to really be careful about keeping my foot dry and clean, should be fun

I need one too. It looked ok until I took it off to get the windshield replaced. A small piece of the rubber lip broke off when I grabbed it and I can see that the PO or someone tried to paint it or something, the finish is flaking off the rubber lip now.

Just ordered one for $50.18 from http://www.bmwmercedesparts.com with free shipping. Not the place to order from though if you are in a big rush. Shipping was a little slow last time but you can't beat $248 for an OEM Pilkinton windshield with free shipping. Much better! Since I'm replacing mine I left the wipers off for now, looks good and it's nice looking out the windshield too without them in the way. A lot easier to see the road and any debris that might be there. On my old 72 2002 I never had wipers on it. I put some chrome acorn nuts over the wiper mounts to protect the threads.

Holy cow, 5 days behind on this thread. Charlie/JP, cars look great. Hope you recover well Cresty.

Thanks John! I will be working on the ZHP today after work...;)

My ZHP is rustling my jimmies.

Sitting at a red light.. light turns green aaaand I'm off. 1st gear normal acceleration to about 3-3500 revs and once I get past about 2400RPMS it seems like the car speeds up, slows down, speeds up. Kinda like a slight jerking. RTABS? I just had my car inspected last week and I was under the car with the tech doing the inspection as I told him to check every single bushing. I even had 2 other master techs come look just because. They all said all bushings are good..but I can't help but think my RTAB's are bad.

Why would rtabs make your car do that?

Doesn't every e46 do that in first gear? Mine does it. I know others do it.

It's not actual acceleration. It's more of a jerk.. like a bad bushing jerk.

I heard that they all/most do it.. but it seems more pronounced lately.

And I thought all this time that I was releasing my clutch too early that I need to go back to clutch release school.

Sorry to hear that Dalton....yeah, that sucks.

I'm getting that sound but from my sunroof. I'm thinking that the sunroof shade tabs are about to go. Guess I have to get new tabs and take apart the sunroof to fix that....

BP got to hear it over the weekend....at one point I thought we broke my sunroof because it got stuck but somehow it unstuck itself and began to work again....keeping it closed for the most part now...

Mine does that, the clips are broken, it does not act up unless I try to open the sun roof without sliding the shade closed first, if I leave the shade open and try to open the roof it jams. As long as all I have to do is close the shade before I open it I'm not worried about fixing it.

Happened in the E39 the other day.. it sucks because the window is stuck halfway up.. And to ice the cake, I think the clutch is going to take a dump any-day.

I called the shop I wanted to use for the clutch job and window fix, and they put us on a two week wait list! It should be worth it, it's one of the best BMW E46 M3 shops in the Bay Area/Nor cal. Luckily, they work on all Bmw's.

Hope you get your car sorted out man!

Will you be at Cody's bimmerfest meet and greet? My sunroof tabs are done as well and my sunroof shade has been stuck in the position that it goes to when you put it in the 'vent' mode. So maybe we can team up and help eachother out!

Well, if it has a waiting list then it has to be good! But thanks man.. I'll have to decide if I should DIY it or just have my shop do it

DIY man, see what two sets of the tabs would cost you from work and I'll buy one and we can tackle it

Removed the Sirius antenna of the roof of my car from the PO and scratched it while in the process. Used a flathead wraped in a paper towel. Then I wasnt paying attention and had the screwdriver reversed in my hand and as I pulled back... Screech! Bummer. Nothing a little touch up paint cant fix.

But looks better now.

That sly dog!

Lol! I'm up and about, drove the car yesterday and took it to fill the tank, dads car is out of commission for a few days, shifter cable snapped. So he's got my car while I'm down.... Hit this milestone
5416
Then I overslept this morning and came downstairs and a small box was waiting for me.... Khoalty replaced the carbon fiber emblem that fell apart! Win
Tomorrow my 3rd ECS order comes in, quart of oil, BMW oil pouch (pouch with the Velcro back and some paper funnels and gloves), got that cause I hate having a quart of oil sliding around loose in the back.
Friday my khoalty order comes in, steering wheel black carbon fiber roundel, led interior lights and angel eyes! Pumped

Glad to hear you're moving around. Nice milestone, sorry you missed it. Glad to her Khoalty came through and replaced the emblems. That's awesome! Looks like you've got a lot of work lined up one you're feeling a lot better.

Inb4 you rip your steering wheel 'roundel' off.

Quick note: it's not a roundel and it doesn't come off. Your stickers just cover it.

Last night, per Daltons advice, I used a magic eraser on all the black rubber trim around my windows and DAMN. It looks brand new, here's a before and after shot of the roof rack mounting rails, before they were coated in shit and old wax, now they are clean!
