Kristen called Me last week and told me someone had just traded in this X5. We could get it for dealer cost plus $500. I went down to look at it and damn! this thing is nice. Got it for $8500. Space gray, black leather interior, sport package, sport activity package, premium package, technology package, comfort access package, heated seats, satellite radio. 9600 miles on the odometer. Staggered wheels with massive 315X35X20 tires..Sold!
The MDX is been a good vehicle but it’s approaching 200,000 miles time to trade up.
Being a diesel I can’t wait to start modding this!

Yaaasssss!! Welcome to the big D club. [emoji2960]

That’s you being the big Daddy of course.

There are times when I wonder if I can get into “that” spot when I’m driving the 535d and one quick throttle punch at 2,000RPM and I’m already there and making my way into that spot. What kind of MPG do you get city and highway? And what did it change with the tuning?

Congrats! Looks very nice.

I owned a 2015 TDi Touareg... 415 lb-ft of torque was nice! Better keep plenty of adblue on hand so you don't ever run out. I never ran out but read that if you let it run dry, the vehicle won't start. That would suck if you're a long way from home without any adblue.

The only car I've ever owned with 315mm tires was a 1990 Corvette ZR-1. I'm always amazed to see an SUV with tires that wide.

Yea, I plan on eliminating that whole system eventually. It will make some really good numbers with all that gone.
The e53 4.8is we had, had those tires on it. I was surprised to see them on this though

You probably already have full hookups for big tuning. But if you need any other. My buddy works at Malone tuning. They specialize in diesels. They have really good clean development on the M57 and N47. I’m waiting for them to get time to start on N57 development so the F10 can be a monster.

After driving their mostly stock looking 335d with an approx 11.3 quarter mile....I’m blown away how much power is made with high reliability kept in mind with their tunes. Yes for burning up the Dino juice!!!!

I’m new to the diesel. Don’t know much about them yet. Any suggestions would be helpful
I installed the Burger Tuning JB-D and took it down to Savannah yesterday. I’m not that impressed.
I’m probably going to do a full emissions delete including the swirl flaps and get a tune but that will be down the road. That’s a lot of work and $

Rovert
07-13-2019, 07:52 AM
I asked my friend about what you have. He works at a diesel tuning shop with in house dynos and said what you have is usually good for people who want to be able to maintain warranty but if you don’t have warranty he said it’s far more worth it to get the full tune done.

From my experience the EGR system is like hot air intake and since exhaust is not O2 rich it’ll reduce power but burn more efficiently. Its also feeding carbon back through so removing will keep just clean air being sucked into the engine and keeping swirl flaps clean.

The DPF constricts flow because it’s filtering out that rich rolling coal fuel which is great but not great for pure exhaust flow. At different interval of driving your engine will allow the exhaust to burn hotter, heating up the DPF and burning off all the diesel soot from the filter to keep it unclogged.

The adblue system just sprays minute amounts into the exhaust just before the muffler to convert exhaust gases to a more friendly nitrogen and water gas. If it ever goes empty the engine will be instructed not to start until filled up. If the sensor is working you will get plenty of wanting to fill it up. Usually you’ll fill it up on every oil change. But with time the pump and sensor could get contaminated by crystallized adblue causing a more expensive failure of that system.

Those are the biggest Achilles heal of all three systems. Once removed and tuned to operate without them, the engine will output enormously more power as I witnessed with my friends 335d. The better the tune, the cleaner and more reliable the exhaust burn as it’s a balance over power and heat. A good tune will only let out a mild grey haze at WOT before turbos have fully spooled. It should not deposit a blackhole in the intersection sucking in petrol drivers and making them fear for their lives. LOL.

I can't even see it in the F10. Maybe there is a level when you have the computer connected to OBDII through INPA,ISTA,etc..... Not sure. I just did an oil change on the F10 and I dumped a full 10L jug of adblue into the tank too. I'll put more in next time since I think the tank is 15L. I think it'd be good to keep it full so no crystallization happens. Don't want it to dry out!

Lol yep! It still gets better fuel economy than the MDX, even with the JB-D on it.
I found out that the JB-D has an internal dial that adjusts the percentage of power. It's turned all the way down when delivered. I jacked that thing all the way up to 100%. Made a big difference. Pretty amazing torque. Trevor, you should give one a try. Literally takes 2 minutes to install: lift the beauty cover off the top of the engine and there is a single connector that the unit plugs into right on top of engine...

Oh yeah. I was reading about that. One user drilled an access hole through the outer casing to get access to it for easy adjustments. Some engines/setups won’t take 100% so if the engine is not smooth they turn it up/down little by little until the engine accepts whatever setting.

My aunt leased an E53 from new and always expects to buy but she didn’t with the E53. When she took delivery of the E70 many many years ago she was hoping it would be better. Today it’s still her primary vehicle.

It has a few annoying issues like the comfort access on the drivers door handle doesn’t work and the passenger seat occupancy sensor is permanently on. PDC malfunctions randomly but I can live with all that for now.

New wheels on. I’m really liking them!
20X10.5 front 20X11 rear
New Conti DWS all the way around
Got an OEM trailer hitch installed as well

Also have applied the Rod Sutphin trans tune. This made a huge difference in the performance of the 6speed auto. Sport mode shifts are amazing and I also have rev matching now in sport mode.
In stock form the transmission suffers from sluggishness and poor shifting.... frustration and boredom

Next up is a full emissions delete and tune. Huge torque gains and about 8-9 mpg better fuel economy.

If you can afford it, get them to do it. I wouldn't wish that job on my worst enemy. Everything is barely accessible. I had to use a mirror to see most of the electrical connections, bolts, etc. You have to drop the subframe to get the DPF out in one piece unless you don't want to salvage it, then you can cut the vacuum tubes off of it. My hands are shredded from trying to fit them in places they weren't meant to fit. The under carriage is all plastic panels that have to be removed. The passenger side motor mount and bracket have to come out. Took me about a week to get it done and that included two full 8 hr days. Laying on the garage floor for several days is not fun.
I'm sure if I had to do it again, I could cut a lot of time off the procedure, now that I know what to do but I'll never do that again.
Her's a post/tutorial about how to remove the DPF and EGR https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1307679

Also, I'd recommend a trans tune as well. I got that done before I did the emissions delete. It makes a huge difference. The transmission performance was my biggest complaint about the 35D in stock form. I went with Rod Stutfins tune.

That’s where my BMW BFF works!! I visit them all the time. They’ll be working on my dad’s N57 as the testing bed!! I’ve driven Malone’s 335d stage 2.9. He gave me the key and I went out on my own for half an hour. It was INSANE!!!!! My heart was thumping and I tried to text my group what I experienced but it was near impossible to put into words after being sent into a parallel monster torque universe. It’s the fastest non M BMW I’ve been in and it’ll easily trump all OEM ///M cars too! LOL

Rob talk to my bff Josh, and he might be able to get you a deal. He works closely with the owner of Malone. His dad purchased their 335d after M57 development was finished and Josh owns a plethora of classic BMWs along with his E46M.

Josh said with 2.9 tune. Just make sure your transfer case is in top condition and you’ll be dandy. There’s sooooo much thrust. It’ll be easier to get it down with AWD. But their 335d with LSD isn’t bad either. I didn’t burn too much rubber. I just burned Dino juice.

How’s the X5 drive right now with things deleted? What do you feel is different with it now?

I can't drive it until I get the tune... too many errors. The DDE freaks out with all that stuff gone and puts it in limp mode. I haven't even bothered to start it.

Right now, it has 16 DTC codes lol. Hopefully, I put everything back where it belongs. On a project this extensive, you start second guessing.... "Did I put that vacuum line back on?" "I don't remember plugging that sensor in, Did I do that?" etc. You can see from the pile of leftover parts, there is a lot to remember.
