Hi all,

I'm currently based out of New York City, and am due for my first oil change in ownership. The previous owner last used Castrol 5w40 for a while, but I currently have a tank of LiquiMoly 10w40 that I was going to use in my e30 but never ended up touching. The big bmw shop near me told me they used LiquiMoly 5w30 in all their services. What do you guys use and perhaps recommend?

Thanks

5W-30 and 5W-40 is good for our climate. It covers both ends of the temperature spectrum we see in our region.

Castrol Edge 5w-40 is BMW Longlife-01 approved. Their 5w-30 is not. I use the 5w-40 because I'm in FL and because of the LL-01 approval. 10w may be too heavy for you in the winter

Liqui Moly is what you want

Yep, I think I might go for the 5w40 with Molygen. Have you had any experience with that?

Yeah it really seems like it. Just have to figure out what to do with this Liqui Moly 10w40 now..

Yeah, I looked further into oil information a few hours ago. 10w40 really doesn't seem ideal now.

Put it in your 80s vintage BMW.

I don't know how often you change oil. Maybe consider the 10w40 for the warmer months?

Ahahah I crashed my e30 before I could even think about that.

Well it seems as if my oil change is coming up soon, and it's already gotten chilly in NYC for the time being, I guess 5w40 is the only way.

What did you end up going with? I’m not sure if I should continue the 5w-30 I did last year or should I try the molygen.

I actually went with the 5W40 with molygen, no problems at all and everything seems to be running very smooth!

I ended up going with the same 5-30 as last year so that I could continue with fcp’s step 2 additives.
