The wife and I took the trip in her car to meet up with Shawn and his wife. Spent the day in his town and had a blast. After the paperwork was done, we headed home. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191212/52fab07cbbbd76959d3460c73b90954d.jpg

Over the next couple of days I gave the car a quick detail and took some pictures. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191212/1732326f8f1fe797eaccf527e643cfa1.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191212/cce9172044dbfcf38b9ef9f3368486e0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191212/4fb241fa59e1d08c2979210a4021da1f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191212/a7e8136b8d2b7448dc1e5190da394045.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191212/e99d78515aee5b1ffb712ba951ab8d25.jpg

Then over the course of the summer I drove the car and enjoyed putting more miles on it. Then life happened with the wife and I listing our home for sale, finding a new place, buying and settling in.
So car projects were put on hold and the car sat in the garage. I ended up removing the fog lights since they were busted up and reverted back to chrome grills since one of the black ones got busted.

Ol'Red didn't take well to this news being stored so it decided to develop a coolant leak.
So a cooling system overhaul started the snowball process which is where I am currently with the car.
Ended up removing the radiator and all the cooling parts on the front of the engine. Time and mileage took a major toll on the plastic parts. Then pulled the intake manifold, all the hard coolant pipes, heater hoses, oil filter housing assembly, all the power steering related items and anything else that needs to be replaced.

Then the whole I am in there thought process took over so the car went up on the quickjacks.
I decided to address the oil pan gasket leak and do a full cleaning of the engine and the subframe.
Enjoy the grime and dirt with this next set of images.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191212/96fd136772b0884dc216e5a40c3d2ef3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191212/e9c22244c14d36974835f918de262e8a.jpg

While examining the engine bay and with Soo much room for activities, I disconnected the front subframe and removed it out of the car. This allowed me to examine the oil pan gasket leak and see how bad it was. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191212/751f9f6d2be0cc5ea06e0389c042c620.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191212/2745102ba43f149e90520090c84057fd.jpg

So the next step in this whole process is to replace anything that is worn, torn and leaking.
The current lists of parts has become extremely long but a part of me just couldn't leave things be. The wife still has not banned me to the couch so I will begin the cleaning process and reassembly so stay tuned for further updates.

Thanks for taking good care of her Vas—I new you would.
The rear main seal leak was not that bad! [emoji16]
Can’t wait for more updates.
Merry Christmas mafiosi.
I been rather busy with this project and getting her back on the road.
Lots and lots of cleaning with elbow grease and now I am finally putting new parts on the car and boy is the list long.
The goal here is to fully refresh the drivetrain and suspension of the car that you would never be able to tell that it has 200k+ miles.
So I replaced the following items:
Oil pan gasket
Oil level sensor
Oil dipstick o-ring
E46 m3 engine mounts
Complete tie rod assembly for both sides
Tie rod boots
Steering coupler
Front sway bar bushings
Front sway bar links
Zhp front control arms
Z4m front control arm bushings
Crank position sensor
Coolant temp sensor in the head
Hard coolant pipes in the head
Rubber coolant hoses under the manifold including heater hoses
Full ccv system including the air distribution block on top of the manifold
Intake manifold gaskets
Fuel line
Iacv grommet
Throttle body gasket
Next up is the complete power steering system overhaul and all the cooling system components on the front of the engine including the radiator.
Pics below. Stay tuned for more updates

Congrats, good progress here.
Since I am currently working remotely from home, that means the laptop goes into the garage and I can tinker with the assembly of the car.
Installed the ccv system, intake gaskets, iacv grommet and connected the fuel line. Then the intake manifold got put back on the engine.
While I wait for the next shipment from fcpeuro, I will run a vacuum hose for the o2pilot mod and get throttle body and iacv back on. Also need to install the front sway bar with the new bushings https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200403/6cbe113a1d9ec7555a3d29d04e02b447.jpg

Got the cooling system finished up today and filled it with distilled water. Started the car up with no exhaust and did a drain and refill twice before filling the system with bmw blue coolant. Some strange green stuff came out so glad it's back to factory coolant.
Tackling the rear part of the car now with replacement of the rtab, sway bar links/bushings and rear brake overhaul.

Nice work!
I am at the point where this car is starting to kick my arse.
The rear suspension is nothing but frustrating with removing bushings. I started with replacing the rtab and they were just seized in the trailing arms. After applying heat and penetration fluid, I got one side replaced.
The other side would not budge so I ended up removing the complete trailing arm assembly. With it out of the car, I was able to remove and replace the rtab. However the wheel bearing is bad but the axle is seized in the hub. Even with heat and penetration fluid it is not budging so I will take it to a shop that has a press to remove the axle and the hub/bearing. I need to invest in a press for the garage at some point.
But every single bushing in the rear suspension is just past it's life cycle.
I'll share some pics but this has been a learning experience for sure.
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk
This is the passenger side with the axle seized in the hub. Rusty and crusty. Needs a new dust shield, bearing and hub for sure. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200426/83cbef6b8c1eb8b522d8c9fe40b1c360.jpg

Keep pushing man, it looks like you're almost there. That's some rust on those hubs/e-brakes!
Thanks for posting updates.
So I got trailing arm in a 40ton hydraulic press. It took 25 tons of pressure to move then axle out of the hub. It even got heated using the acetylene torch.
However due to the massive amount of pressure the caliper tabs on the knuckle got sheared off. So the axle is saved hopefully but now I need a complete trailing arm assembly. Off to a junkyard I go unless I find someone on the forums willing to ship one.
Oh and also the outer axle boot got torn so going to replace both boots now.
This job sucks. All for a $35 wheel bearing.
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk
Like they say when it rains it pours.
Noticed that a coolant leak developed under the intake manifold. Not sure what the deal is but now have to pull the manifold back off to see what is causing it.
And still have to find a used trailing arm/hub assembly at the junkyard.

:(
New record for me to remove the intake manifold is 35 minutes.
Looks like the leak is from the upper hard coolant pipe.
Either the o-ring isn't seated properly or the surface of the coolant block is messed up. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200430/691295566d7e548fb1b3c8fcfbbb1484.jpg

Btw this is the aftermath of the trailing arm/hub assembly with what should have been a simple hub and bearing job.
I didn't even bother trying to get the hub and bearing out since there is no point. The axle will need new boots as well.

Bro wtf
Bro wtfYeah for real. I just want a test drive and a track day with it.
Btw I removed the hard coolant pipes and right away noticed the issue. The 2 o-rings on the upper pipe were not seated properly hence the coolant leak. I knew they were tight upon installation but I used silicone spray. So who knows what gives.
Got the intake manifold back on and everything else in the bay.
Waiting on parts from fcpeuro now for the rear and have a lead on a trailing arm/hub assembly.

Those guys are damn near impossible to remove from the subframe. Luckily you won't have to deal with that. Also, I thought my subframe was crusty... well it still is, but not as bad as your old one. At some point I'll have to source a clean subframe carrier and replace mine:

Yeah, a good poly subframe bushing will have a larger contact area with the RACP so there isn't a stress concentration like with the originals that have the metal centres that stick out, and they have basically no added NVH.
OE diff bushings are solid, I have ECS Tuning poly (would not recommend because of fitment issues) which I chose for ease of install, but they are 88A so on the softer side. With all of the interior together there is no discernible difference with NVH, but with the rear seats and all of the trunk interior removed there was the slightest hint of gear whine.

Oh man I'm glad you got a fresh subframe to work with
I've been doing the same refresh and did a TON of research on subframe/diff mounting combinations. The best combo was always with OE rubber diff bushings and poly or solid subframe bushings.
I bought both AKG 95a poly and solid aluminum. Planning to go with aluminum ones and sell the AKG's on here if that's what you decide you want for this car. Is it 100% street?

I would steer clear of OE style bushings given how they concentrate the prying forces in such a small area of the RACP. As long as you keep the OE/Meyle rubber diff bushings, then you don't need the extra insulation of a rubber subframe bushing.
The Revshift bushings were my first [mistake] purchase. I ordered them, kept researching/reading reviews, and then went back to cancel the order and go with AKG poly. I couldn't find any reviews on the Revshift bushings (which makes sense -- they're relatively new) and, as I learned more about the design differences, I decided that I liked the AKG design better for load distribution and minimizing nvh. There were several people on m3forum that had been happy with the AKG bushings for years of street and track use, so I opted to pony up the extra $50 or so to be sure I wasn't going to have to do this job twice.
All that said, if you do go with the Revshift, be sure to order through FCP. I ordered directly through Revshift and it has been a nightmare: I immediately emailed them about cancelling the order, then followed up each day asking to cancel. Someone finally responded after they had shipped, so I offered to send them back once they arrived. It took 7 more emails over 3 weeks for them to finally respond and say "yeah send them back." It's now been over 3 months and I haven't received a refund. Can't get a response to any emails and they don't list a phone number, so this is fun. F Revshift.

Wow that's some next-level BS, sorry to hear. I was going to go with AKG back when I did mine, but the shop who did the Redish plates (which seemed pretty familiar with BMW and aftermarket parts) said they didn't know about AKG (???) and as such wouldn't warranty the job. Their go-to was Powerflex yellow, those have been fine for me. If I had the choice I would've done AKG - back in highschool we did a dedicated autox E36, and almost every single mount and bushing was from AKG

Ordered the oe rubber diff bushings from fcpeuro and SuperPro Rear Subframe Mount Bushings which are poly. I found out about them watching the Speed Academy video about the e46 m3 build they are doing - link here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qysajYwoHZA&list=PLp8FsoRYWYK5ad9mOlCS88DMqjhAjFxRU&index=7
Plus the cost was better then some other options.
So the superpro USA poly subframe bushings are backordered for 6-8 weeks. I am not waiting that long for them and I am not spending $200+ for a set.
I was semi okay spending $150 for a set but at this point i might order the oe rubber ones for $60 and call it a day.

Got the subframe, trailing arms, parking brake assembly and new rotors installed. Went smooth and easy.
Also I rebuilt the drivers side axle with new boots and grease. Simple diy job.
However installing the axles back into the hubs has proven to be a major pita. Only got the passenger side in and that required having to use force from a trusty sledge hammer. The splines lined up and the axle slid in and then it just stopped moving. So hopefully no damage is done with banging on the outer joint of the axle to fully seat it into the hub. And praying the drivers side is a smoother procedure.

I learned something today: CSB = center support bearing and it should be replaced with the guibo. BTW, the guibo is on my to-do-list.
Got the guibo and the csb replaced. No records on file but both parts had the bmw logo stamped. Could be original or replaced early in the cars life.
But the guibo had stress cracks in the rubber and the csb had a dry bearing inside of the assembly.
Got both items replaced and the driveshaft back in the car.
Next up is to tackle the exhaust studs.

Inspection done, a/c is now blowing crispy cold and the car alignment is great. Spec sheet attachedhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200721/dac2dfbb850466e566aa0b1505f81de2.jpg

Put about 100 miles on it and the traction control light/DSC light came on.
Pulled the code and 2 came up for pressure sensor 1 not plausible and faulty.
First step was to bleed the brake system but that did not solve the issue. So I ordered 1 sensor that is throwing the code (second sensor seems fine)
Gauge cluster pic attached. It was 100 degrees today. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200721/4b7964352720c357d440c36ef91ad8df.jpg

Replacing the DSC pressure sensor has fixed the issue so I'm happy about that.
Next up on the maintenance list was the maf sensor and I splurged for a 1.2bar gas coolant cap. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200730/9e93079303a78364436124a5108520ca.jpg

How hard was the sensor? I’m getting the same issue with a 5E21 Pressure Sensor 2 code. It seems pretty cramped in there.

Sensor 1 is next to the firewall and that is more difficult to remove then sensor 2. You have to remove the brake hard line out of the way to be able to put a 27mm wrench on the sensor. And remove everything quickly to loose as little brake fluid as possible.

i have the occasional ABS error every a month or two, but haven't tackled this yet. 50sKid had a pretty good video on getting it out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvyVCwCAx1Q&t=448s
Did you find it similar to what he did? That's the way I had planned to do it when I tackle it. I bought then entire master cylinder with the DSC and sensors attached off eBay in 2018. Still on the shelf

Still on the shelfThat is one way to do it but if the DSC unit itself is not bad, then I don't see the need to replace it. Plus you have to code it to the vehicle afterwards.
I would start off with a full brake fluid bleed and clean the abs sensors on each corner of the vehicle.

Roughly 75k on these spark plugs. What do you guys think? Ngk states they are roughly a 100k mile replacement.
I put it a fresh new set since I feel like they were due for replacementhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200731/4c6d82b747c57e7ec2719640a9e656c5.jpg

Good idea to replace the set. Your car will run better.
One other issue I was having was not being able to fill up the gas tank fully.
I installed a new genuine bmw vent valve that sits underneath the intake manifold and that allowed me to fill up the tank without the nozzle clicking off. It looked like it was replaced before with a Vaico brand.
However the gas gauge was showing the incorrect reading. So a gauge cluster reset did the trick and now the issue is resolved.
Hopefully these are the last mechanical issues and I can move on to refreshing the cosmetic items.

Nice! That's gotta feel like you just rolled off the dealer's lot in 2004. You want me to burn you a mix CD?Dude. Yes and please.
One thing though on the back to my mind is replacing 2 tires. The rear Michelin pilot ss are brand new that Shawn installed prior to the sale of the car. But the fronts are from 2012 and just old. Wonder if I can get away with just 2 new pilot sport 4s

So I decided to list the car for sale. I told myself that I would right after all the work because I wanted another individual to enjoy the zhp experience without having to worry about repairs or maintenance.
But now I been putting more miles on the car and it's such a joy to drive.
If the right enthusiast comes around we can discuss but for now more miles = more smiles https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200826/ffe6a601d6e4ba1a3efb11b70c4ac43b.jpg

I am very impressed it has its own part number
Yeah for sure. Much cheaper then a new key lol.
In other news the front suspension developed a new noise when it's cold. It is specifically heard when going over bumps.
Knowing that pretty much everything was replaced in the suspension it was not difficult to diagnose the issue. Only items that I did not touch were the upper strut mounts since they looked okay from a visual glance.
However I took the front koni yellow struts off the car and both sides are shot. The bearings inside are dry and sound like there is sand in them. Also there is physical play in the bearings.
Placed an order with FCPeuro for 2 lemforder mounts, bump stops, dust boots, and lower/upper spring shims.

That seems awfully premature for Konis - I thought general consensus is they lasted at least 75k miles?
That seems awfully premature for Konis - I thought general consensus is they lasted at least 75k miles?I was referencing the strut mounts and other associated parts. No records of when those were replaced.
The konis themselves are still in great working condition. Only downside with them is the exterior coating on the shock body. Salt during the winter months is not friendly towards them.
