I have been browsing FB marketplace much more than I should be lately and this is my latest impulse purchase. :applause2 The ZHP has always intrigued me so I took the opportunity to purchase it. It's a 2005 Sparkling Grey Metallic 330ci 6 speed with about 143k miles. While this is my first ZHP I am not new to the BMW world.

I'd like to make this into my new daily so plans for it will mostly be restoring it mechanically to like new with OEM like parts. When I bought the car I knew it needed some usual things to include oil pan gasket and motor mounts. Diving further into it after I bought it revealed a couple more things like a small water pump leak, leaking oil filter housing gasket and a tensioner pulley that was not happy. I replaced just the pulley until my full belt/pulley/tensioners refresh kit comes in. Taking a quick look around underneath I also discovered it had a resonator delete, RTAB limiters and some aftermarket poly FCABs.

The first wave of parts have been ordered and include;
-spark plugs
-oil pan gasket/dip stick o-ring
-drilled oil pump nut
-oil filter housing kit
-motor mounts
-belt/pulley/tensioner kit
-cabin filter
-fuel filter
-water pump
-Z4M FCABs
-hood struts
-Liqui Moly 5W30
-Liqui Moly 75W90 diff fluid
-Ravenol 75W80 transmission fluid

For good measure here's some other E46s I currently own.

My 2000 323i touring. I wasn't planning to purchase this (FB marketplace :mad) but wanted to S54 swap it and that plan was later scrapped so I'll likely be letting it go after I get some things done on it.

My 2002 E46 M3. A buddy and I drove to St Louis to get this after getting a text that he was finally ready to sell it after previously listing it for sale and keeping it. I was so excited! This is my fifth E46 M3 and likely a keeper as I have always lusted after LSB (before it was cool). It's SMG, slick top, no nav, halogen lights and black manual non heated seats. All stock besides some eibach springs and RAC RG63 wheels. Honestly the way I would've specced it. Say what you will about SMG but I am one of the few that enjoy it. I do miss having a 6 speed at times but the ZHP filled the void.

Got some time to work on the ZHP and wagon recently. The ZHP got a new water pump, belts, pulleys, tensioners, spark plugs, hood struts and cabin air filter and the wagon got new hood struts, oil filter housing gasket, sensors for the housing and vanos line. Both desperately need a thorough detail.

My workspace since I didn't feel like rearranging my driveway to get into the garge.

Friday I'm planning to knock out those upper coolant pipes and a good amount of other maintenance on the wagon. I've recently acquired a longer commute with lots of traffic so I'd prefer to take the wagon and need to get it all sorted.

Maybe I missed it, but are you planning on replacing the DISA? or modifying yours with a G.A.S. unit?

I recently got some work done on the wagon to make it more reliable to commute with. All of this came about when I was doing the oil filter housing gasket and noticed the plastic coolant pipes under the intake manifold were beginning to turn brown. While it was back apart for that the usual "while I'm in there" things got replaced.

Things replaced in this round;
-motor mounts
-both plastic coolant pipes under manifold
-full CCV along with various vacuum lines
-intake manifold gaskets
-throttle body gasket
-belts/pulleys/tensioners
-cabin filter
-engine air filter
-oil level sensor
-oil change with Liqui Moly 5W-30
-ICV cleaned
-injectors cleaned and flow tested

Pulled my cart out to help prevent a huge tool mess in the engine bay.

Next up for the wagon will be diff mounts and Guibo followed by an entire power steering refresh to include lines, rack rebuild and pump.

On another note, the ZHP's passenger window decided it no longer wants to go up so it's being garaged until I feel like messing with it.

Ooooooof, any symptoms or did it just completely stop? My passenger's side window goes down slower than the driver's, and doesn't go all the way down (~3 mm of the top of the glass sticks out). And when it's about halfway down it makes a slight click/crunch. But it's been like that for 5 years ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thanks! Only thing which may or may not be related is the day before it went the window wouldn't go down/up like it usually does when you open/close the door. The next day I went to roll it up when I got to the store and that was it.

A not so exciting update on the ZHP. I finally got the door panel off to see what was going on and it appears the regulator has had enough. I didn't take the regulator all the way out yet but I tested the motor and it works fine so here we are. After reading a bunch of different things online I'm going to give the Uro "premium" regulator a go as it's only $90 and has a three year warranty.

I got the Üro regulator too because I couldn't justify double the price for a genuine unit. Normally Üro makes terrible parts but it's not like the original ones are durable to begin with so what the heck. It's been fine for a couple of months now.

If I had a sedan I'd be more tempted to go OEM but the price difference is too big not to try Uro on the coupe. Especially since I may have to buy another one for the driver side soon. :(

For what it's worth the Üro Premium regulators seem to hold up quite nicely. I've installed a lot of them in customer cars (E39, E46, E53) and haven't really had to do any warranties on them yet.

I replaced mine with the OE regulator from FCP euro. It was less than $200 so didn’t bother with other versions. My original lasted 14 years, so figure that another OE one will outlast the car/me

ZHP is still on the back burner but some interesting things have been goin on. I decided to start the rear subframe reinforcement on the LSB and I'll be swapping in the complete rear end out of another E46 M3 project I had. The assembly going in will have new upper/lower ball joints, new RTABs w/ limiters, TMS solid subframe bushings, TMS street camber arms, OE front diff bushing and I will be giving the E36 M3 rear diff bushings a shot. Its not nearly as clean as I would like it to be as the previous M3 it was supposed to live in cosmetics weren't a concern but I'm not tearing it apart again (right now) to get everything clean and recoated.

Old assembly out

After a bit of cleaning. Overall, it was pretty clean with only a couple areas that will need to addressed before the plates get welded on.

This is why it's important to clean. You would likely not see this otherwise.

Thats where I'm at with that. Still need to get the plates and the gas tank cleaned.

Onto the next thing. The absolute last thing I need right now is another car but here it is. My buddy sent me a link to a car out of state on FB market place and after taking a look at it I had to have it as it had some really nice parts and was very cheap. It was being sold cheap due to an "engine noise". I'm not sure what the culprit is yet but it runs/drives. From briefly listening to it it sounds like a top end tapping/knock so I'll make sure the spark plugs are torqued and do an oil change as I imagine the oil in here is several years old. (previous owner said he had it for 3 years and almost never drove it)

Someone at some point really loved this car as you can see below. A binder of records/receipts was included that somehow made it to me after being passed through several owners since the guy that did all this. There were even copies of emails from ESS regarding the new supercharger he bought. This guy even printed out full color instructions of the install (and also had a dvd copy).

To summarize;
2001 330ci, 5 speed, 143k miles
BMW Perfomance strut brace
BMW Performance intake
ESS TS1 supercharger
SSR 18'' GT3 wheels
E46 M3 seats
ZHP cluster?
Full carbon trim set from EAS
some kind of aftermarket sound system

Picking it up.

Back at home. (hood is not latched on the driver side because for some reason its interfering with the intake)

Whoa, nice update! Lots of good work being done here, and congrats on the new acquisition.

What is the consensus regarding replacing fuel hoses/lines that connect with the fuel tank? Is that something you'll do "while you're in there" since you have the fuel tank out?

Damn, lots of nice parts - I can imagine the car being worth its price for the supercharger and strut brace alone!

Thanks! I've had the gas tank in and out of several E46s and while it won't hurt to replace them I never have.

Thanks! Yeah, the parts on the car are worth more than it for sure.

I got the strut brace off and just did a light cleaning/polish to bring back some shine to it.

My suspicion of loose spark plugs appears to have been right so far as when I took them out only a couple required the use of a ratchet. I didn't have new ones so I put the old ones back and properly torqued them. No more noise thus far.

It has been a while! I ended up selling the original ZHP to a good friend of mine a while back (who still has it). I wasn't particularly looking for another ZHP/project but I came across this on craigslist and couldn't resist. Basic overview;

-2004 ZHP Imola/alcantara with 147k
-6 speed (swapped)
-JB racing light weight flywheel
-Bilstein coilovers/Vorshlag camber plates
-Performance Gearing 3.46 3 clutch LSD with finned cover
-UUC swaybars
-RE transmission mounts
-ECS aluminum water/power steering pulleys
-BW dual fuel pumps
-Turner rear camber arms
-Style 216 wheels (no ZHP wheels)
-Brass caliper guide bushings
-stainless brake lines
-wheel studs
-swapped to silver cube from black
-GAS DISA upgrade
-AFE intake

I'm probably missing some things but that's most of it. It also came with a set of D Force LTW 18x9 wheels and a bunch spare parts. The PO had owned it for the last 5 years and done about 3 track events with it.

Now onto the problems. The PO was selling it because it had become more of a project than he wanted to deal with. It had a gas leak, a couple oil leaks, made a horrendous noise while steering with an equally horrendous steering feel, clear coat is peeling in a couple areas, good amount of dings (most should be able to be PDR'd), interior needs some love etc I enjoy bringing back cars like this so it was perfect for me.

After bringing it home;

Low coolant light was on the following day. The bleed screw was broken so I took one off a new hose I had laying around. The whole system will be getting replaced soon.

Cause for the fuel leak was the hose running between the dual pumps

Steering noise/feel was due to a faulty steering rack. After tracking down a yellow tag rack I got it replaced along with new Lemforder tie rods, steering coupler and new boots. I didn't due a super thorough inspection before buying it and it ended up not even having a ZHP rack in it. It had a TRW rack. :facepalm I didn't take a tremendous amount of pictures during this as I was a bit pressed for time.

Next I wanted to check the rest of the wiring. The pin running to the DME had came out of its connector. I will be going through and tidying everything up at a later date to include the reverse light wiring that can be seen in the previous pics. I'm on the lookout for a complete manual harness if anyone has one. While I was down there I noticed a leak coming through the brake booster so I'll be replacing the master cylinder and brake booster as well.

-cooling system overhaul
-belts/pulleys/tensioners
-fixing the AC
-all control arms/bushings/mounts etc.
-re wiring manual swap
-all fluids
-all leaks

EVAP monitor wasn't setting (no CEL) so I started with the easiest possible fix, the gas cap, replaced it and let it idle a few minutes then it set. Maybe that was the fix maybe it was a coincidence.

AC didn't blow cold when I bought it, PO said he would have to recharge every so often so I knew it was more than likely the evaporator. Did it over a weekend.

Even if you're careful with the curtain airbag connectors they will likely get a little damaged removing them. They still clipped back in nicely and didn't come out with a tug I just used some electrical tape as an added layer of protection.

Onto some random pics;

Traded my wife's Tiguan for her new daily. It was remarkably clean and very well optioned with a full service history so I had no choice.

What’s the specs on the LSB? I’d love to have one of those or alpine white. Dream spec would be techno violet with mtech cloth

It's a 2002, LSB, black interior w/ manual non heated seats (has pole positions w/ the factory manual sliders now), no nav, halogen headlights, slick top. Only options are Harmon Kardon, rear PDC and SMG. Lots of maintenance done. Some mods include ground control coilovers, pole positions, CSL SMG tune and comp wheels. I'm the third owner and it came with all the keys, manuals, sealed vhs tape, window sticker etc. I've had it a few years now which is much longer than most of them stay.

Haven't had a ton of time to work on the ZHP but was able to get the M3 out to COTA. It had been too long!
