Hey ZHP family! Richard here from San Diego with a new to me ZHP. She's an '04 manual with black alcantara interior that I found locally on the ZHP facebook group page. It wasn't the color I wanted but hey, a ZHP is a ZHP right? As with all build threads, I will keep the updated with new content and progress as I go. Not sure how long I will be keeping her (I have a tendency to go through cars) but I feel like I will enjoy this car very much!

The previous owner took good care of her but was wanting to move onto something different (Corvette). He was up front about the oil pan leak (no drips besides when I park on the driveway with the front end pointing down the driveway) and a fuel pump issue. The car seems to bog out in certain RPM ranges and when on the throttle heavily when in high gear but low range of RPM. Scanned the car and it brought up a generic P2240 and P0461 code. P2240 from what I have read might get remedied from the software update, which I plan on taking to the dealership for when I also get the airbag recall done. Hopefully this will address the 4k rpm issue that ZHP owners talk about. The previous owner did the DISA permanent valve upgrade along with the cooling system, which was a huge plus for me. As for the P0461, I am changing out both the fuel pump with the level sending unit (passenger side) and the individual level sending unit (drive side).

As I post this, I gathered parts and accessories that I have purchased over the last week to install tomorrow. Funny thing is, tomorrow is my birthday and the lady asked what I wanted to do. I asked if I can be left alone in the shop so I can blast my music and work on my car. Birthday wish granted! :) Though I have never been mechanically inclined growing up, my job for the past 5 years has taught me how to wrench and become a big DIYer. Luckily for me, we are a manufacturing company that happens to have 2 in ground lifts here at work so I can pretty much do most of the work.

Subscribe to the thread, ask questions and see what I have planned for this ZHP :headbang

While you have the oil pan off, perhaps consider safety-wiring the oil pump nut.

congrats on the new car

Thanks! I definitely haven't had the pleasure of enjoying the car yet since it's been sitting for me to take care some of the issues.

Congrats on your new ZHP!

While you have the oil pan off, perhaps consider safety-wiring the oil pump nut.

I wish I would have known this before I started putting things back together. I did do some research and it seems like the ZHP had an update to the installation procedure of this nut. Let's hope I get lucky :blink

In other news, I was able to work on the car this past Saturday. I should have expected family and friends to call me on my birthday which took up about an hour or so of my time, but I was still able to get some things done. Will post an update once my pictures load up on Flickr.

So on my birthday, I was able to be left alone so I could work on the car. The lady wasn't too fond of it, but it was my birthday so she had no other choice but to agree. Besides phone calls from family and friends, it was a quiet day in the shop.

Here she is on the lift. The buggy you guys see in the background is my boss's toy/prerunner for when he raced offroad. Cool thing about it? It has the S62 engine from his wrecked E39 M5.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51141883407_ac35454ce5_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2kVewbt)

When I first bought the car, it had a pending code P0461 which for "fuel level sensor A circuit range/performance" and P2240 which is for "O2 sensor positive current control circuit/open bank 2 sensor 1". When I bought the car, you can feel it stumble/bog when you were in 6th gear and under 3k rpm range and get on WOT. Once it got past 3k, it was normal. Previous owner said he did everything but the fuel pump and fuel level sending unit. So I replaced those:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51142763348_258fdcdca5_c.jpg

I got the car on the lift and started the oil pan gasket replacement:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51143327189_45598090d7_c.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51142763318_5568507ff9_c.jpg

I wish I knew I had to check the oil pump nut, because I would have checked it and probably safety wired it while I was there... But I did not... Maybe I'll get back in there sooner than later to check it and safety wire it.

We have a pressure washer at work and some good cleaning supplies so I was able to clean up the oil pan pretty well:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51143327209_2259c92c6c_c.jpg

While I was there, I replaced the engine mounts as well:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51143654635_ec9f232867_c.jpg

The only 2 hiccups I ran into was the vacuum line that came from the fuel filter to the intake boot which ripped off. I called BMW and they wanted $60 for that small vacuum hose... I got lucky and found some laying around in the shop and replaced that. The big hiccup was the bolt that held in the hydraulic tensioner stripped when I was trying to put everything back together... Previous owner replaced all the tensioners and pulley besides that one. I ended up ordering a new one 2 days later once I got into work.

I got the car back together and dropped her off at the dealership to get the airbag recall done and DME update. Swapping out the fuel pump and fuel level sending unit did not fix my "stumble/bog" issue. I was ale to get an M440i loaner car which is an absolute blast to drive. My full bolt-on and tuned F30 335i was very comparable to this stock G22 M440i.

Irrelevant picture, but we had a beautiful sunset the day I left the shop after working on the car. Beautiful ride home in San Diego:

Awesome update, and that's a helluva shop you have access to.... wow.

Could the stumble / hesitation be from VANOS? From Beisan Systems (link (http://www.beisansystems.com/faq.html)):

"What are the symptoms of a failing vanos?
Overall loss of torque and power, particularly in the lower RPM range, < 3k. Bogging then surging at 3k RPM. Uneven power distribution and RPM transition. Engine hesitations in the lower RPM range, < 3k. Louder idle and intermittent idle RPM hiccups. Difficult takeoffs. Loss of power and bogging when AC on. Increased fuel consumption."

Got any more photos of that prerunner?

I must say, I am pretty fortunate to have access to our shop. We use to be a full on service and repair shop in Escondido but my boss sold that company a few years ago to focus on manufacturing tools. He had 2 in ground lifts installed for when we do R&D, video instructions and for our personal cars. He's a tool nut so we have access to ALL types of tools.

So my "stumble/bog" issue is resolved after getting the DME updated. What's weird is, the shop foreman (who we are really good friends with) told me that the DME might crash, and if it does, they won't cover it. I took the gamble anyways and it worked out. I am still going to address the vanos since it's probably due for it anyways at 107k miles. I have yet to go through a fillup as the previous owner handed me the car with a full tank, but I will take note of gas milage.

Here is a few shots and a quick video we did with the prerunner:

Thanks! Once things start to clear up, I think I will propose a SoCal ZHP meet up at the shop.

The stumble issue happens around 2.5k rpm till about 3k. After that, it was good. It happened whether it was partial throttle or wide open (wide open was more noticeable). I will be addressing the vanos next as it's due. I reached out to the previous owner to confirm and he said he has not done it yet.

Side note: Is there a physical difference betwen the ZKW and AL headlights? I am getting ready to install my angel eyes/halos and noticed that my headlight covers have ZKW on the passenger side and AL on the driver side. I didn't look to much into it, but my OCD is killing me and I need to have matching headlights. Wanted to have matching headlights before I started the angel eyes.

Honestly, every aspect. Just trying to see if I need to change the whole headlight (passenger side since it's ZKW) to AL. Or if they're all the same, get the projector from TRS and call it a day. But I don't want to get the projectors from TRS if the housing is different or the high beam reflectors are different.

Not really. Just the bottom of the headlight. But you can just swap the mount that it sits on and they will work fine. Totally interchangeable.

oops didn't see this. Yeah the insides are different. Different projector bowls, different mounting. They use different ballasts/igniters. The bulb is the same. I'm pretty sure the high beam bowls are different as well. I remember ZKW being like plastic and AL are ceramic.

Is there a part # for the AL headlight brackets or do those typically come with the headlights? I ask because my car has AL on the driver side and ZKW on the passenger side. Looking for a used set of AL to replace the passenger side ZKW. From what I can see on RealOEM, bracket part #s are the same but they don't disclose the bracket fitment.

Hmm maybe they are the same. I remember when I was doing a swap for a customer's car from ZKW to AL. The bracket didn't clear the ballast completely so I had to cut a part of it.

I would start a new thread lol There's barely any meet threads in Socal. I have the 2 that I tried. I feel like this time, if it happens this year we could do it. Since most of us are home/remote work.

Sounds good, I'll see what I can find once I get the actual headlight and order the brackets that I see on RealOEM.

I will start a thread pretty soon. Meeting at the shop will give us a lot of privacy, close to a shopping center and also access to tools if we wanted to work on a few things. No major overhauls though haha.

The angel eyes should mount the same between the AL headlight assembly and the ZKW headlight assembly. Strange to see that you have one of each. I would check the ZKW headlight assembly and see whether or not the plastic bowl has been changed out for the AL or E90 projector bowl. If not this is something you will end up doing unless you just replace that headlight assembly for an AL headlight assembly.

That is what I did for my ZHP... replaced the ZKW headlight assemblies for AL headlight assemblies and then swapped in the ZKW lens into the AL headlight assemblies for better light output. This is what I am currently running in my ZHP.

Looks like it was swapped out. The more and more I look into the car, the more I think it got into an accident and wasn't reported. Hood isn't from this car, mismatching headlights, bumper clips weren't used properly. All good, downside to not looking at the car at my shop or doing a PPI. Currently looking for a passenger side AL headlight so I can replace the ZKW, then I'll install the angel eyes.

When you say lens, are you talking about the outer headlight cover or the projector lens?

Not picture worthy, but finally got the Rennlist phone mount installed (Link here: https://www.rennline.com/BMW-E46-ExactFit-Magnetic-Phone-Mount/productinfo/PM01.17/). Being that I am always on the phone for work or listening to my audiobooks, I had to go back to the trustworthy Rennlist phone mount. Had one in me E46 and F30 335i, always worked and looked sleek. Now just waiting on the Bluebus unit so I don't have to use my airpods anymore.

I'm talking about swapping out the actual xenon projector lens from Bosch to ZKW

By doing this with the AL headlight assemblies, you get the metal bowls of the AL projectors and have the clear polished lens of the ZKW lens for a much more intense light output. I liked this mod so much that I also retrofitted the ZKW projector lens into my M3's AL headlight assemblies. The light output from these are bright. :)

I'm afraid I don't have a part number for the ZKW lens. I don't think there is a part number available for this to be honest. You would have to source ZKW headlight assemblies w/ burnt bowls (cheaper that way) from eBay then you can remove the lens to swap into your AL headlight assemblies.

I don't have any spare ZKW lens as I used my last spare set rebuilding my current ZHP's AL headlight assemblies with them.

if they fit in the AL frames then yes. If I remember correctly, the ZKW-Rs are the same diameter as the ZKW lens. If so then they are swappable and you will have superior lighting. :thumbsup

Thank you! Just ordered them along with the TRS side markers. Just placed an offer for a passenger side headlight too.

I noticed my xenon headlights don’t have DRLs. Maybe it was coded out by previous owner. What does everyone recommend to DIY coding for not so tech savvy people?

I have my DRLs coded off because I'm running on angel eyes. I find that the standard BMW DRLs on these cars don't look good with angel eyes lit. I prefer the cleaner look of having either the DRLs on or just the angel eyes on, not both. Since I like the look of a clean and bright angel eye setup (in this case Orion V4 angel eyes) they serve as DRLs more than adequately along with the Morimoto LED fog lights I have installed on both of my BMWs. :cool

I coded my brake force display with NCS, also made it such that the climate control displays "lo" or "hi" when you go to the extreme temperatures, instead of just getting stuck on the number. I could be wrong but I don't believe you can code those with PA Soft.

It is of note though that you can use PA Soft to fix the coolant temp gauge buffer and get rid of the speedo offset. A few days ago I was also able to code my seatbelt pretensioner off as well.

I have a couple NCS resources bookmarked here (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/19EVOzQmwH2FeY1GP_XdrRD9lWHPNuVarRP7r2pL4lLU/edit?authkey=CJyaz_QG&hl=en&authkey=CJyaz_QG&hl=en&authkey=CJyaz_QG#gid=0) and here (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1yadXgoWLtVpJq0TDfXlE99qMPTlH5f7Tn2B45gbSuQA/edit#gid=0) (thanks to member derbo for the second one!).

So I'm not sure if I mentioned it or not, but my car came with 2 headlgihts, AL and ZKW. The AL had the silver trim but was spray painted black while the ZKW had the black trim. I have a slight OCD so I figured I would update them and had them matching, plus people talked about the ZKW having burnt bowls so I figured I would tackle them. I installed

I upgraded the lens sold by TheRetrofitSource that were used in the ZKW projectors. AL on the left were placed and ZKW style on the right that were the upgrade.

I also upgraded the bulbs to Philips Xenon X-treme Vision bulbs were are absolutely fantastic. For me, I don't care about color at all. I was after light output and visibility and the Philips Xenon X-treme Vision delivered. I'll try to get better pictures at night. I messed up and wish I did a before and after when installing these.

Annnnnd while I was there, I also installed Orion V4 LED Angel Eyes. Again, the quality is amazing. I will get better pictures of these at night as well.

And for my birthday, my lady got me a Coby steering wheel which came in late May but I installed in at the same time I did the headlights. As mentioned by some people, the Coby wheel is a rewrap of the old original steering wheel, so the feel is thicker.

Well done, sir. Any plans to paint or replace the bumper grille ? That will improve the looks big time.

Yea, I started searching bumper removals and etc. The plans cosmetically is black grills, repaint/replace bumper grill and get the Euro lighting setup.

looking good. Iono if it's the pictures, but that red stripe on the wheel looks off center. Like 3mm to the right or something. That would bother the shit out of me lol

Oh yeah, it does look like it's around 11:30ish. Weird since it's coming from Coby... usually it seems their craftsmanship is great.

Also I can't say it enough how jealous I am of your workspace at work!

Haha, it's the angle of the picture and how the wheel sits in both pictures. But I can assure you guys, it's right on the money.

I'm pretty fortunate with the shop. My boss is a tool nut/freak and has all types of stuff. I gotta take a picture of our production side so you guys can see our welding department, CNC machine, mill, lathe and all the other crazy shit. More than half of this stuff I don't know how to use or know we have till I need it.

Went back and did my oil pan gasket again. I guess I didn't put enough sealant in one of the corners which had a very slow leak. Figured I would go back and address that along with adding Achilies oil pan baffle and oil pump nut.

Thanks! After doing some reading on the horror stories of these cars at the track, figured I would go back and redo everything. Still waiting for some other components to get back in stock before I can show you guys what the car looks like :)

Wanted to post this up. Got the front LCA arms replaced with new mounting brackets, replaced all rear trailing arm bushings, installed Ohlin Coilovers with Vorshlag camber plates.

The wheel/tire setup is 17x9 ET30 squared with 245/40-17 Yokohama A052 tires. These 200tw tires run super wide, so my rears are rubbing. I rolled the inner part of the fender with a slight pull but it's still rubbing in certain areas. I am probably going to cut the inner fender as I don't want to pull it.

Wanted to post an update on the car. Not even 1000 miles after installing the Ohlins coilovers, Apex wheels and etc, a forum member bought the car. Though I had many plans for the ZHP, the car is in better hands with @EDS (Ethan).
