View Full Version : Dust in Battery Compartment?

Was in the process of replacing a 20k mile and 9 year old battery in my beloved Imola Red 2004 ZHP and I noticed dust in the battery compartment??? The dust is a very fine and almost resembles the color of sawdust, a light tan color. I'd post photos, but I can never get that function to work. If I can figure out the attachment, I'll edit post.
Anybody else have this and know what this is?
I first noticed it along the side of the battery near the vent tube and on the opposite side below the unused vent.
Any help would be appreciated!

Not sawdust - that's corrosion!

Might be time for new tail light gaskets. Hope you can figure it out.

Geez! You guys are serious!? Great, something else to feed my insomnia.
I was able to vacuum up most of it. Some didn't want to come up. It's probably the lo-fi pictures that I posted. This is a California car and barely driven 2,000 miles a year. Last year I doubt I went over 1,000 miles. It honestly looks more like a fine dust that settled in spots in the battery compartment. There isn't any real indication of the typical rust colored metal or dust.

Corrosion from the battery terminals.
Didn’t think about that but tail light gaskets might be worth checking too.

When I went to replace my dead battery, that was my initial fear, but the terminals are totally clean. I?ll check the tail light gaskets.
Thanks!

Just an update, I bought a new EverStart Platinum AGM battery (H7 94R) from Walmart. Has 800 CCA and a 4 year warranty. Total of $179 + tax etc.
Cleaned out the dust as much as possible and tending to some burnt out bulbs on the inside of the trunk. Have a few things in the shopping cart with FCPEuro (front kidney grills) and now the bulbs. I saved some ignition coils in the wish list just in case I need them. Going to tackle the valve cover gasket and spark plugs sometime soon so I feel better about my ZHP and will put more miles on it this year. (Only put 211 miles in all of 2024!).

211 miles haha? Nice. I think there’s been 1-2 years of my ownership where I’ve done that as well.

Yeah, sad isn't it? These cars that we all obsess over sit alone and neglected! LOL! For the last several years, maybe 6 or 7?, I've been averaging about 2k miles a year. Each time, I vow to bump those numbers up!!!
