I think we've got the official badge for everyone worked out, so I'll help convert avatars to sport said badge. I've already done a few, some of which have the slightest bit of the edge of the circle chopped off. If you guys are happy with those, cool; if not, re-post the raw avatar image you want here so I can redo it more carefully. Your avatars have all changed so I can't get your originals back, as it changes in all your posts.
Also anyone who hasn't had it added yet either pm me or post it here. Keep in mind if your images aren't bigger than 125x125 I have to add space to fill that up because the badge needs the extra space to be well defined. I'll be adding in the color of the background the avatar sits on on this forum and then hang the badge on the edge (see Mtnman's avatar). The illusion will only work if the background is that exact color, so this may not work on other forums as well. For bf.c our avatars will scale perfectly as they allow 116x116, but they won't scale it for you; it has to be changed prior to upload there. As long as your avatar on here is how you want it, I can make that change in about 3 seconds and pop out a new one. Again pm me or post in this forum. It's hard to keep track of multiple versions of multiple images, so toss all avatar modification stuff in here.
If anyone else uses photoshop and wants the psd for the badge, it is here: http://www.mediafire.com/file/rx2p6a14nab7q4r/mafiabadge.psd

It just looks like, since you had to make the picture wider (because of the avatar), that I can see a white strip...that runs vertically on the right side. Not a hugs deal....but if you could color match the entire background...it would look better. Heck...its not even my avatar. Just a suggestion..and I very well could just be seeing things.

It's possible it's added somehow when it gets plopped onto the spot in the threads. It's possibly browser related - not all browsers display content the same way. Never tried it in anything but Opera. My raw images are all the way to the edges (most are beyond the edges, but it gets cropped off when it becomes a jpg). If they aren't big enough to fit or have odd dimensions I fill the background first with the color that matches the surrounding area, then copy the donated image over top, resize, then zhp stamp it.
I just realized I wasn't looking close enough, but now that i'm focused on it, I see a thin white line on both sides of everyone's avatars. The really weird thing is... it's not really there. I used the windows magnifier and went to %1000, took a screenshot of an avatar and zoomed into the pixel level on it in photoshop. Not a single pixel of white, but I'd swear it's there looking at it right now. I can't explain why it appears that way to me.

Jon, here's 2, take your pic. Just testing removal of the outer white ring, like the forum buttons. That white ring seems to get schrunched when I shrink the original. I also tried adding a bevel to the badge.

Why?

Tampa330i
12-19-2010, 08:54 PM
I think that one for Jon is dark because the initial image was dark, I didn't change that at all - but I can make it lighter. And the bevel effect has come closer to a true bmw logo (upper left corner lighter than lower left corner throughout the image). The white ring looks good on a large scale, but shrunken down it deffinately looks better without it.

I chose #2 without the ring.. agree with all that has been said. I can't adjust the levels as a whole picture as it plays with the logo as well. The original was dark so if Tampa330i can fix it cool I''ll repost... thanks for the effort..

An update for avatars:
Some of you may have noticed your avatar as shown in a thread is slightly lacking in quality compared to the version I posted for you, here. I tested it out and found that the images were being redrawn to accommodate for a smaller size cap on the avatar which was not displayed but was quite small (14k I think). Instead of spitting it out and declining the upload, it converted the files by dropping their dpi down. They retained proper dimensions (most did, some lost a pixel²) but lost quality in doing so. How the site does this... I am not familiar with it, and cannot explain without some research. It makes them kind of fuzzy, as if slighty out of focus. Anyway, Marcus fixed this so the images now show full detail. To fix this, just re-upload your avatar image. All the ones I made are still in this thread.

Marcus-SanDiego
01-01-2011, 08:03 AM
Without boring everyone to tears, I can tell you why it was dropping the dpi down. The max file size was set too low. As a result, it was downconverting the file. I have upped the max file size. Now the images are exact copies.

Tampa330i
01-01-2011, 08:28 AM
To be honest I don't sit close enough to the monitor to really see the difference unless I'm working on an image. I'm surprised no one else noticed, or maybe someone did and I didn't see it. It's hard to keep up with all the stuff going on here, especially if you miss a day or two.
Do you know how this downconverting works? I'm interested, if noone else is :)

Marcus-SanDiego
01-01-2011, 08:39 AM
I'm not sure what happens during the downconversion process. I imagine is simply reducing the size enough, dropping pixels along the way, until the picture fits the parameters of file size. Not sure, though, what the process is.

And, yes, it's starting to get difficult around here to keep up if you miss a day or two. I read every post on the site. I can tell how much content we're creating on a daily basis.

I usually interpreted DW's mmmmmmmmm's as, "Interesting... Not really so interesting that it deserves a comment, but JUST interesting enough for me to hold down the 'm' key for two seconds to let you know that I acknowledge your effort to engage me."

At other times I also have interpreted the mmmmmmm's (although not in this case) as a gentle dissaproval-- the DW equivalent of calling bullsh^t, if you will.

Am I anywhere in the ballpark, DW? Or should I just shut up and go back to watching Mythbusters?
