I drove this morning listening to a CD. I went into a shop and when re-starting the car, the CD (same) in the unit would not play or eject. The display window reads CD in each corner wtih a larger CD in the middle. The radio works fine. Thoughts?

Upon my return home, the car sat in the garage for about five minutes, I went back out, turned the key to position 1, and the CD began playing and ejected per usual. Glad it's back to working order, but I'd sure like to know why it behaved in the aforementioned manner.

BMW gremlins. That's what I chalk these things up to. Makes me sleep better at night.

Yeah, I always find the electronic issues with our cars the most vexing. As a dedicated DIYer, give me something with a part number.

I have heard a few times of the e46 business cd head units going bad.

Well, I hope, as Boss stated, it was a gremlin-esque event. Actually, the head unit in this car has very few operating hours.

Werd. I know when they go bad...typically there is no fix...other than replace.

best option is to get an oem aux + cheap ipod and call it a day rather than replacing the whole unit imho

No, it was a commercially produced disc.

Maybe you car is trying to communicate or something. "I'm sorry, Dave, I will not play this cd."

I have the in-dash Nav unit, and every so often it'll refuse to play a CD. It's absolutely bizarre. Regardless of what CD I put in there, it won't even find that there's a track and will revert to FM radio after hitting the Mode button.

Sometimes it lasts a few hours, sometimes a few days. Usually I'll just try to load a CD a bunch of times. Turn the car on and off a few times. Let it sit. Eventually it comes back. Might have something to do with the phase of the moon?

Was it a Nickelback CD?
