Thanks, DW. I'll pretty much shoot anything. :biggrin

Same way here. My family doesn't get it, and they all think I'm weird.

I've found that I have a very different and profound perspective on my surroundings now.

You may be weird (I won't tell them) but you're just practicing. They'll love you for it later.

Quite a few of you guys have relatively recently taken up photography. I think a lot of it probably stems simply from photographing your cars. Regardless, I have to say it's honestly been fascinating watching the development of talent. It's really awesome to see this sort of collaborative, organic, cross-country learning experience.

Mad props!!

Definitely. Everyone has an open door for the other. We're more interested in making sure we all get better together than smashing each other on these pages. It's not competitive. It's collaborative.

I picked up the camera so I could get good shots of Mark (little Mark). Anything else for me is gravy.

Thanks for the comment, Ryan.

Matt, I had jacket envy today. I was the dumbass out there with a t shirt on and no hat.

That happened to me, too, today. Took the dog for a walk just now (2am) and made a PB&J to take with. T-shirt and flip flops, no hat.

We were about 2 blocks away from home, when I noticed that it was a little chilly out. I looked down and noticed that the grass was very crunchy with frost, and simultaneously noticed that my 'room temperature' PB&J was steaming.

I think the "pro" cameras are weather proof, but the "prosumer" models are not. Could be wrong though.

So it actually rains out there??

All I know is this...

My 5DMKII has been in 3 ft of snow (literally fell into 3 feet of snow in Colorado), been dropped from 3ft or more at least twice, been out in the rain about 10 times while I had to continue shooting and never had any issues.

Also from what I understand, a lot of the older 5D's have survived almost 10 years of photojournalist use out in Iraq/Afghanistan and the rigors of war (not my personal experience thank God). They build those things pretty tough.

The lenses... that another story.

I like the composition here buddy. Spend some time playing with it in LR3 and work on contrast boost and maybe some color adjustments (I'd consider doing B&W personally). You could have a really nice shot in the end.

Yeah...thanks Badger. I really liked that birdhouse, and took my best shot. I walked the area....and that was it. I kind of liked the grass in there to break it up a little bit....hut what do I know.

I tried to shoot out of focus in foreground a couple of times....for practice tonight. This was one result.

no it's definitely something you want to try and learn and shoot if you like. My suggestion is back off from the grass just a bit or raise your aperture a few stops so you can see it a little better/clearer. you still want it blurry but clear enough to know what it is. try to get a bunch of it together too... use it to "frame" the bird house too if you can, get creative. Build your shot, don't just work with what you see in front of you. ;)

Really quickly (cuz I'm about to get out the door for an early shoot today).

1st pic - decent composition, post processing needs a lot more contrast as it's pretty flat. Aim for a wide tonal range of a little white, lots of levels of grey and some black.
2nd/3rd pic - work on your perspective, these shots look like how I (or anyone else) would see the fish on a regular basis. Focus on showing them in a different perspective that might interest the viewer a bit more. Oh and focus too... 2nd one looks like you focused on the glass instead of the fish.
4th - better contrast than #1 though the image needs a bit more direction like the 2 above it. I think if it's a photo of the turtle it needs to be a bit more zoomed in on just that. Or if it's about the turtle on a table with other stuff, zoom out and focus on all of it as 1 entity. you are kinda stuck somewhere between that IMO.

Keep practicing. Lots of guys here to help you out in your journey and it might help to talk to guys like Marcus and Dane who've both made magnificent strides in the last month or two.

wow thanks so much, After reading what you said I definitely see many places I have fallen short on these photos.
The first three have no post editing done whatsoever, and the fourth is me playing around on photoshop because i just got it and i have no idea what I am doing,
thank you so much for the comment I will definitely be looking forward to speaking with you, dane, marcus, and many others knowledgeable people on this site about how I should be shooting, and what editing should be done

wow very interesting the only part i could not really grasp too well was the auto focus, do you always focus on the subject no matter where the camera is pointed, and if the subject is out of the picture such as the outer edges of picture what is focused on?

I really want to try this, although i only have the 18-55mm kit lens i wonder how it will turn out just by using the concept and process of taking the picture without having the suggested lens requirements

These are 2 shots from yesterday. I'm not required to edit anything for my job, just shoot so the editing is minimal and quite basic (some levels and I threw on a small gaussian blur for portrait effect).

Thanks Dane, that particular technique is called Brenizer method and is actually 35 seperate shots taken at f/1.4 and then stitched together. The purpose is to create a very shallow depth of field without losing your width of field. I literally shot it in a field.....

Thanks, Kyle.

I took this shot while I was laying on my stomach (I love shooting from that position because it provides a perspective that's not traditional; I'm shooting from the vantage point of what a puppy or small dog sees). Click through to my Flickr page and look at the largest size photo. Really puts this photo into perspective.

I was shooting at 155mm (on a 70-200mm lens). I was trying to get as much perspective compression as possible, so I shot from as far back as I could go. I like the end result.

Glad you like it, too.

Ok fellas! I've always shot in "Auto" Mode on the DSLR before now. :shifty Here are my first two attempts at shooting in Manual mode. Let me know what you guys think? Anything and everything is helpful as I'm trying to get used to it.

Also, I hear a lot of people shoot in "Raw." What is this exactly and how does it benefit/affect the shots?

Solo, I'll let the pros comment, but RAW is an unformated image file. It allows more editing than a JPEG, because JPEGS are already formatted, not allowing for much edit later on.

I like the first shot, maybe use a higher aperture though and get all of the cards in focus?
