I'm getting this done as soon as I can and I've been wondering if I should switch up to the black alcantara for the steering wheel as opposed to the OEM gray.

I usually stick with OEM, but after seeing this pic on coby wheel's website (http://www.cobywheel.com/), I'm REALLY temped to go black alcantara w/ red top center strip

http://cobywheel.com/images/sampledata/fruitshop/image1.jpg

Also, not really sure where to post this.. so marcus/dane: feel free to move to appropriate forum:innocent

so how exactly does this process work? do I send them my existing wheel and they re wrap it and send me a new one, or do they just send a new one and I send them back my old one?

danewilson77

They send you wrapped wheel, and refund a portion of your money, when they recieve your core. Your core must be free of chips, scratches etc....

You can send your wheel to be wrapped then i would invoice you and send back/ or purchase a wrap on the website i wrap one of my cores and when done send pictures with a core deposit invoice(then refund when old wheel is returned)
Thanks

Op how long did your alacantara last before you started considering this
also would you be ordering matching shift and brake boots?

nike001
09-23-2011, 11:07 AM
Thanks Colby!!! I think I'm just about sold on black alcantara. Not sure about stitching though.
I figured black to go with interior, or M-sport colors, or throw some red.
I also thought the strip and throwing some random red, normal (for most other cars with this) yellow.. OR the orange (i figured it might tie in nicely w/ the orange speedo needles..anyone agree??)

I'm looking for input :)

My car has almost 112k miles..and can easily make it another 20k miles before it NEEDS to be replaced. This is just somthing I want to do. My buddys car has ~70k miles and his wheel is shot.

If I order a different color stitching, I might try to order new boots as well to match. (although I just copped a brand new OEM alcantara shift boot :()

The shift boot and ebrake wraps are sweet. I got them from Mike at Cobywheel a while back....along with the alcantara arm rest cover, all with the Blue/red stitching. I must say, I love them all. He does good work.

Same here.. but I think my car is too plain (or stock). I think the black w/ black stitching will do... and then add the yellow stripe at the top for a subtle addition.

time for a new wrap. so the question is...what options to go with?? black/grey alcantara? stitching color? hmmm...

Some of these photos make it appear that the thickness of the wheel is more than normal. Is that reality or just an optical delusion?

Im not saying it is a bad thing, just wanted to know.

coby1
10-06-2011, 04:50 PM
^Slightly larger the one with the perforated section is my wheel it is double wrapped( alcantara wheel with 2 more layers i am old and need all the comfort i can get lol) but regular alcantara wheels are thinner than leather wheels (about 1/8 inch overall)thickness of comp wheels and leather wheels are a little thicker the alcantara used to wrap my wheels is aprox. 1.3mm thick so that would make any wheel done about 2.5mm thicker overall so if you have a regular alcantara wheel and i wrapped it you would notice a slight difference (for the 1st week then you would get used to it) but if i wrapped a leather wheel with alcantara and you were used to a regular alcantara wheel you will notice a nice difference vs. previous wheel most folks want/like a larger diameter wheel but pictures are hard to show actual size but the difference is nothing out of spec/crazy.
Thanks
Mike

Really like the two tone. Of course, having a black car with black interior kinda would defeat that purpose. I say go for it, it doesn't have to be that aggressive to pull that off, the silver seems like it would be fine.

Would it be possible to do a two-tone Black Alcantara and Perforated Black Alcantara but have the transition the same as the stock ZHP wheel where the seams go horizontal across the wheel instead of perpendicular to the wheel? If so I'm in for sure.

Looks great! The grey stitching really adds to the look.

I need to quit looking at these thread though, makes me want to try something new even though Coby just did mine last winter. :-) Maybe black or OEM grey with a red time stripe and red stitching. The two-tone red/black looks great but I'd worry about keeping the red part clean. I bet that one would look good with red stitching on the black part and black on the red.

I've always wondered: is the red stripe at the top of the wheel on racecars supposed to tell the driver that the wheel is centered? Someone just mentioned it's a "time stripe" and it got me thinking...

yes, it's exactly for that reason. so that on the track, when you're cornering or sliding or spinning (as the case may be) you can quickly know the position of your wheel. It's basically a quick visual tool for when you need to know exactly where the wheels are pointing.

i think it's called a "time stripe" because it's always located at the 12 o'clock position, so you can always tell "what time" you're wheel is at, so to speak

the fabric is sewn inside out so there are seams and if you do 3 of those it creates ridges - not in a good way.

Do you do extra padding? ie thicker wheels?

Also have you thought about putting together DIY kits that only need to be stitched? I saw your diy write-up but it would be awesome if you had the material all ready to ship out.

Yes....it's exactly the same. You stitch it up yourself....but the material would be Alcantara.

I have a wheelskin. Not purchased at Walmart :shifty Thanks for the compliment though.

100% perfect solution is to go through Coby though. I will make happen in the future, as it's the correct way to have it done, and it's very cost effective, the way he has it set up.

While I have been emailing Mike about my upcoming order of a rewrap package, the black/brown is not my doing. :) And honestly, that color brown is too dark for the natural brown interior. I often refer to my interior color as 'peanut butter' to those not familiar with the E46. Its much lighter than the brown in that steering wheel...

But I have to admit, I do like that look a lot!

Pip, your e-brake handle boot should be over the edge of your e-brake handle. It shouldn't look like eh... a shirt tucked into pants.

Flip the boot inside out and over the ebrake handle. Then zip tie it around the bottom of the handle. It should look like this. Pull the zip tie tightly so it stays on the ebrake handle and doesn't slide off. Should look like this:
http://forum.e46fanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=372399&d=1282351735

Then flip it back so it's not inside out anymore and the finished product should look like this. No more shirt tucked into pants!

Looks great Mike! Now if only I had an M3 with cinnamon to install those into. :-) I might have to consider a red/grey combo wheel like that. Any issues with re-wrapping a wheel you've already done once?

That orange would go perfectly with my Cinnamon interior... After 2.5 years, my OE Alcantara wheel is wearing a bit. Tempting.

Thanks Mike......very tempting now! No stripe currently, just grey with tri-color stitch. Problem is, that after 2 years it still looks like new and that's without ever having cleaned it. It's probably due though but you can't tell by looking at it.

Might have to start looking for a good used wheel to wrap in the grey/red with red stitch.

Mike,
Is this real Alcantara, or is this an imitation type of material?
I ask because I heard that the real Alcantara brand is more durable than the imitation, and was wondering what you wrap with.

Personally I don't know the difference, so I wouldn't be able to tell. I love the material you use as I've felt it on numerous cars here on the forum, so I'm just curious.

^ i just use the Real Alcantara i buy it gulf fabrics the brown that is on the 2tone wheel is Ultrasuede it was the closest color i could get to match the cinnamon so special ordered it for the customer(cost over 100yrd just like the Alcantara) but is not Automotive rated so it needs to be sprayed with a uv protectant.

I see you've thought of everything Mike. Looking good. I'll just move along. :)

Awesome. Another reason why I don't see any serious alternatives to Colby Wheel. :thumbsup
I can't wait to have the cash to have you wrap my spare!

stripes

Also, do you do thicker wraps as well to increase the overall thickness of the wheel even without the stripe?

coby1

^ they end up thicker because it is an overwrap at some point i will thicken wheels as an option but would have to strip the wheel to do so this will add time and end result add more to the prices

I want another wheel. They are that amazing. I would love to have 3-4 so I could change them out every so often based on my mood/where I'm going...

If they end up thicker anyway then good enough for me. :)

Having the hardest time trying to decide on a color combination.

I do know that I want black instead of grey. Time stripe either yellow or red but no clue on the stitching colors.

Any suggestions?

I went OEM grey and red stripe because my car is Imola/Imola. Then of course ///M tri stitching.

I'm going to go with OEM gray, dove stitching, and an Orient blue stripe (or closet color to it). Boots will remain just gray.
