View Full Version : Best Wiper Blades for ZHP

Hey guys so my wipers are shot and it's time for a new set. I used Rain-X wipers on my last car and loved them but when I went to AutoZone they said that none of the wipers they had fit an e46. Are there special types of wipers for our cars?

What are you all using and how do you like them? I need recommendations. Price doesn't matter.

Costco has goodyr wipers b1g1 right now. Didn't look into them past walking past them in the store since I didn't need them yet but seems legit.

Get PIAA wipers. They are silicone based so they last the life of the car. They are amazing at repelling water too. I had them on my old Ford Escape for years and they worked great. Highly recommended.

Removed Bosch ICONs for OEM wiper blades because the Bosch ICONs were totally shot, streaky, tearing and popped on direction changes. You can refill the OEM blade inserts for $11.

I'm a big fan of the single blade style wipers (run rain-x latitudes or whatever on my F-250) but for the ZHP i'll just refill the inserts. Way, way cheaper and given the airfoil on the OEM wiper, BMW actually put some effort into the design.

I've gone thru a few pairs of ICONs. Work great! Actually BMW has replaced the old style wipers that have replacement inserts with ICONs for e46s. Luckily the inserts are still avialable for now.

"Generic retail store wiper blades sizes are commonly recommended at 22" (drivers side) and 19" (passenger side).
The actual factory OEM sizes are somewhat longer at 580mm (22.84") and 500mm (19.69")."

Personally, I'm not a fan of how those single blade wipers (Icon etc.) look. I prefer the stock look but those Piaas look pretty good, close to the OEM look. Here is another one that looks close to OEM....

http://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E46-330Ci-M54_3.0l/Exterior/Wiper/ES10332/

I just ordered a set of OEM refills for mine. I've just had a Napa brand refill in mine since I bought it and they worked great but they're starting to get hard. Thought I'd give the BMW ones a try since I was already ordering an aspherical left mirror.

They clip right onto the arms.

HTC Thunderbolt+TT

I had a bad experiance with Michelin wiper blades. In the middle of a really bad thunderstorm the driver's side wiper blade came unclipped from the arm and flew off. This caused the arm to strike the windshield putting a 3 foot crack in it. But they did work well before that.

What wipers do you have? Alot of wipers do not sit completely to the right side of the windshield.

When running wipers like the Bosch Icons or the OEM replacements you remove the retaining clip on the wiper arm that holds the stock wiper.

i went through two (expensive) sets and they both sucked. i swear i did everything the instructions said (use the alcohol wipes, let the blades run for a few minutes afterward on the clean dry glass) but they still started streaking and generally were crap after a couple weeks.

maybe i had the wrong kind? i got em off amazon and the chart said they should fit...oh well.

still, with shipping that was the worst $100 i've spent on the ZHP.

in fact, even the Bosch Icon blades have started to streak. I'm beginning to think there may be a pressure/positioning issue with the wiper ARMS themselves. has aynone had this happen? get new wiper arms? or can you tighten the existing ones?

sillieidiot
01-08-2013, 04:52 PM
had the icons, they suck. well they were good when they worked. but they don't last long at all and start streaking within 6 months. also, i find that they crack a lot faster in cali weather especially since i park outside in the sun all the time.

the rain-x latitudes offer the same performance and it's more reliable. been like 2 years with no cracking/streaking yet.

they didn't fit perfectly without taking off that plastic piece that helps push the arms down for regular blades. i think i'm using 24"/19" for the sizes.

Hey guys, so back to this topic again.

Besides differences in expected life, one of the major physical differences between Icon and OEM blade is the air foil, which, I presume, is meant for some type aero dynamics. Although I don't see this foil on most other cars, I wanted to get your feedback on the importance of having it there. Clearly, many of you use ICON blades without an issue but does the foil really play a role?

I will post pics later but I heard from my parts guy that the windshield wipers I have are not factory and are aftermarket? He said to replace them, I'd need an entirely new assembly because the current one I have does not use an insert, it's all one piece.

I don't think he got that right though. It doesn't look aftermarket to me and I doubt the previous owners changed it. Car was 100% stock down to the floor mat when I bought it.

I recently replaced the wiper blades on 3 cars (e90, Saab, Focus) with Rain-X. Very happy with the results. I believe it was around $40 per car. If you go to Advance Auto parts they install for free.

I don't have comments or ideas for the e46. Mine came with new wiper blades and they still worked fine after 5 years ! Granted, that car stayed in a garage day and night. I'm sure that was a factor.

BMW Seattle doesn't carry OEM wiper inserts for our cars anymore. Apparently they've been "phased out for about a year now". Damn, wanted to snag some up!

PIAA wiper blades are absolutely fantastic and I will never use anything else. Had a pair on my old ford escape for 3 years and they worked great until I sold it. I put PIAA super silicone wipers on the zhp when I first got it. Had the car almost 3 years and the wiper blades still work fantastic.

IMO PIAA doesn't get enough recognition.

So it finally started raining here in California so I got a chance to see how well the OEM wipers are working. The PO told me he put brand new OEM wipers on recently so I thought it would be near perfect. What I found is that although the wipers have a very clean and even sweep, the driver side seems to make a noise when it's changing direction in the 12 o'clock position. The noise is basically the wiper flopping from one side to another. The passenger side seems solid and quiet. Any idea if that's normal or is there's something I can do to make the wipers work quietly?

I recently installed a set of the Bosch OEM-style blades, they were fine for a few months (which means 1-2 times in the rain), then the driver's side wiper started chattering MERCILESSLY. Ditched them today for Icons. Will report back how they do. Though after a few crazy monsoon rainstorms, the monsoon season may now be just about over with - suckers probably won't see rain till November. :0

I'm too lazy to check and see if this has been said already, but:

- I clay my window with either clay or the nanoskin pad thing
- Apply rain-x, wax, or a sealant (klasse or whatever I'm using at the time)
- Clean wiper blades with rain-x, etc.

I use the PIAA SI-Tech 20 and 22" blades (http://www.tirerack.com/wipers/detail.jsp?ID=1202&autoMake=BMW&autoModel=X3+3.0I&autoYear=2005&autoModClar=Standard+Model) and have been pretty happy with them.

When they require replacing it will be PIAAs as I have used PIAAs on my other vehicles and find they go for years before needing replacement. I'm frustrated. I had the "alleged" OEM replacements from Bosch that Amazon sells (complete arms, though they are apparently not the same as originals, as per Amazon comments), were working OK. Then suddenly the driver's side started streaking and shrieking like a mofo, and I wound up getting Icons and swapping those on. The Icon works great on the pax side, but on the driver' side, it's not making contact on about 50% of its surface on the "downstroke", but is wiping successfully in the other direction. That little extra piece on the wiper arm is now gone, as it should be when using Icons, and they're definitely installed properly. Could this be something other than a bad (new) wiper blade? Driving me crazy.

I put a set of the Bosch Icons on the ZHP about a year ago. Ran them previously on my Heep, and they worked great in rain, snow, and mud.
Starting around a month ago, both blades on the ZHP are leaving a smudge line on the windshield at the end of their travel, with the pass. side blade smudge being right in the driver's line of sight. It is easy enough to clean off with glass cleaner and the blades still work great, but those smudge lines are about to drive me to replace the Icons with something else. Not sure what yet.

Yes. Installation couldn't be simpler. For some reason, the driver's side just won't contact the windshield properly in ONE direction of swipe, at the center of the blade. The ends are fine, and the passenger side is fine. I think I'll just Rain-X the windshield and quit worrying about it.

It's hard to explain but I just put Bosches on my wife's Toyota Matrix and they don't leave the swiping imprint that my PIAA's do. I'm thinking is because of the silicone factor?

I just put PIAAs on my ZHP and no issues with imprints. I also put PIAAs on my Acura at the same time and have not had any issues with it either.

Interestingly, my ZHP windshield was terribly pitted and had new windshield installed last month. There was a 4" diameter no wipe circle on the windshield after installation and so I assumed there was a flat spot issue. Gradually the spot shrunk down to 50% diameter. I replaced the wipers and did the windshield treatment sent with the PIAA blades and now no unswept spot. Safe-Lite said the spot was likely some installation stuff that did not get wiped off after the installation and that it took a while for sunlight and rain to make it disappear.

Yes. I've put on PIAAs in the past without doing the wet wipe and not had any issues. This time did the full monte installation. By the way, I put on the old fashioned metal bracket type (looks like a girder bridge) wipers, not the one piece type like the Bosch wipers. I find the old fashioned ones put more wiping pressure all along the wiper surface than a one piece wiper. My Acura RLX had less than desired wiped areas with its one piece OEM wipers. Driving in the rain is no longer distracting since replacing with the old style brackets.

At the suggestion by Vas, I picked up the OEM Evo wiper blades (part no. 61610037009). I like them a lot. They work well and are much quieter than the chatty OEM ones I had (they were very degraded).

I should say that, as others have noted, the blades do miss part of the windshield. They miss maybe 1/2" of wiping on the driver's side on the bottom of the windshield at the top of the stroke and about 3/4-1" on the bottom of the windshield on the passenger side at the beginning of the stroke. Neither are noticeable while driving and don't bother me in the slightest. A crappy visualization of the areas missed:

+1 It hurt to pay $50-60 'ish for a set of blades but after 8-10 months they're holding up great. No regrets at all. I saw a website where they offer a lifetime warranty on everything on their site, including wiper blades, but since I don't need new blades I'm not debating on going that route or get another set of PIAA's.

I've been using the PIAAs for a while in all my cars. They're pretty great.

I've tried both the "Aero Vogues" and the "SI-Tech" versions and I think I prefer the Aero Vogues. They seem to work a little better, and you can replace the blades without replacing the entire thing. The refill blades are only like $20 for a pair.

I put the closest fitting bracket onto the PIAA wiper and slightly bent inward the BMW wiper arm curled end to where it was a good enough friction fit to hold the assembly. So far, so good with no issues since installation eight (8) months ago.
