I will do that. I had to buy one since you wouldn't let yours go ;) So far I am having a blast with it. It does have the factory Lsd. The previous owner told me he replaced the shocks, ended up seeing Bilstein Sports under there. The 4 banger really isn't that bad in this car, especially above 4k rpms.

Haha, yep. M42/44 is a lot of fun if you wind it up. Car is definitely a momentum car, but fun as a DD, great mileage, and is basically a small wagon in disguise. I know...I'd miss my ti terribly. She's only got 270,000 miles on her anyway...

Hello again. The last track weekend of 2014 has passed. I spent last weekend on the Summit Point Jefferson Circuit. The track was recently extended by .8mi so it was fun learning a new track. I did the most driving that I have ever done at this event. Friday was the Instructor Academy day. I have finished all the classroom exercises etc, so I spent the whole day on track. I had 5 separate hour long sessions, and a 1 hour skid pad session on Friday. Saturday and Sunday was the normal HPDE schedule. The 325i performed awesome, the handling is so great with the new Nitto R Compound tires. Now it will go in the garage for the winter. It will need some basic maintenance, new brakes, etc. Thanks for checking out my thread.

Video of the Jefferson Circuit extension. I tried a new view for the GoPro this time.:biggrin

Hello. It's been a long time. So, Hey Zhp Mafia crew! Hope all is well. I do not really have a update for the 'Budget Track Car'. I haven't done any mods, or upgrades. I have only replaced the fluids, new Hawk Ht-10 brake pads with blank rotors, and a few track days so far for 2015. The car is great and doesn't really need anything. Plans next are a full race exhaust, full cage, HVAC box heater core delete, and hopefully a S50/52 swap down the road. ;)

Recently the other cars in my driveway have been getting the love. The have all been needing some work recently, bushings, exhaust, etc. I have to tell you all of my newest addition, my new to me 1997 M3 sedan manual. I just picked this up from my good friend a couple weeks ago. I really love it, super fun car to be my weekend/ project car. I have to say that my driveway is looking pretty awesome right now, 318ti 325i 328i M3 /// :)

Nice! With Vaders too! The M3/4/5 was also on my radar when I was searching for a car last year. Couldn't close a deal with a seller so I moved on. The E36 is certainly up there as one of my favorite 3-series bodies.

I have three days on track this weekend. The car is all ready to go, fresh fluids, fresh balance on the wheels, and a fresh filter/intake. A friend of mine had this Conforti cold air intake just hanging out in his shed. The air filter itself had dry rotted to pieces. He gave me the intake kit and I ordered a new Itg air filter. I've always thought that the airbox is the only true cold air intake system. I still feel that way. But hey why not try it out on the track car since it was a great deal. It'll at least make some cool sounds while ripping around at wot ;)

Ha Ha. Hey Boss! I spent Fri-Sun at Summit Point Main Track. It was a great weekend. The E36 performed awesome. The new intake had a great growl at full throttle. The Nitto Nt01 tires are still hanging in there after 10 track days. The car still has awesome grip. There are a couple months until my next event, so we will see what we can do to the Budget Track Car :thumbsup

Lol, thanks John :thumbup

Hey guys. First off, big job changer for me. I left the VW/Audi dealership after 15 years. I am now a Porsche technician. I have been there for a month, and so far, I love it! The facility and equipment is awesome. The cars are obviously awesome, to work on, and to road test ;) I was able to witness and drive the Porsche 918 Spyder today. Cannot even describe it, but Insane!!! I'll keep buying lotto tickets, lol.

The 325i hasn't really moved since the last track day. I did decide to install the "Heater Core Delete" that I bought a couple years ago. I was hesitant for a while to remove the heat, HVAC box, wiring etc. Now having the M3, 328i, 318ti,,, It didn't seem like such a big deal anymore, so away it went. I removed everything related to the HVAC. I installed the block off plate to the cylinder head, removed & re-routed the hoses, wiring, HVAC box, blower fan, etc. I didn't weigh everything, but I would say at least 40lbs. I will get a total car weight here very soon. I am interested to see where I am with it. I plan to gut the front doors and make a pair of lexan travel windows for to & from. Also plan to go through the wiring harness again, trimming whatever doesn't exist anymore.

Take it easy everyone! I am going to try and add a few pics with my phone, see if that works.

I just enjoy messing with the car. Kids were sleeping, I was bored.... so finding wires that I do not use. This is mostly the EWS system wiring, and a bit from Hvac that was in engine compartment.

Since installing the sheet metal door panels door closing has been tricky. Especially if you are already strapped into the harness belts. I had meant to do this for some time. I purchased some belt material, hardware, and a hole saw from the local hardware store. I made door pulls my Saturday project. Everything turned out good, definitely happy with it. While door panels were off since they're pop rivited on. I made sure to remove all wiring inside front doors that didn't go to window motor. I somehow again ended up with another large pile of removed wiring. I hope everyone is enjoying the weekend.

Today I made a new dash center delete panel. I had originally used a Bimmerworld panel, but I had cut it to allow room for the Hvac control panel. Now I have removed the Hvac system I needed a new panel. I was going to purchase another one, but decided to attempt making one first. I had a large piece of abs plastic from a previous project. Made a template, cut it out, placed panel in microwave to get the bend in. It turned out pretty good. I'll probably hit the panel with flat black paint to match the rest of the dash board. I'll wait since I need to cut a couple 52mm holes in it. I ordered Stack water temp, and oil pressure gauges that will be housed in the panel. I will start installing the gauges after the next Hpde. I'm looking forward to adding the gauges, should be nice.

Hey Brett, I like that idea ;)

Today I installed a set of Turner tow hooks and repainted the dashboard panel. I'm getting the car ready for the track this weekend. I will be attending a TrackDaze event at Summit Point on the Shenandoah. I have started wiring in the gauges for the dash panel, but haven't had enough time to finish it yet. I am also working on a custom exhaust & full cage. It's all in the works. I am still stoked on the Budget Track Car.

Awesome weekend. Attended TrackDaze event "Dub Deliverance 5". It is a VW-Audi event on the Shenandoah Circuit at Summit Point. The car was great. My Nitto Nt01 tires officially need replacement. The tires lasted one year and @12 track days, not bad. My muffler hanger tore from the muffler leaving a hole in the side of the muffler, and a loose muffler banging around. It made it through the event, but the new exhaust I was planning is now a priority. Next events are in Oct & Nov. Gives me a little time to figure it all out.

Brett, that is awesome. Makes me wish I still had our 540 wagon ;)

Today I installed the Bimmerworld race exhaust. It is much lighter than the factory exhaust, weight loss, and amazing sound. I opted to use the resonator for now. I may try the straight pipe center at some point, but it's really loud at wot as is. At idle and cruising though it's not too bad. I am really stoked on it. It does fit really close to the body at the downpipes, and the rear section hits the rear subframe sometimes, but it's a 3" exhaust and well.... racecar.

I haven't tried it yet. I did one three day event with resonator in. It is very loud at Wot but not as bad as I thought it would be. So next year I will definitely try it without just to see. I do really really like the sound it makes :)

The Budget Track Car has been great for another full season. After the last event I officially graduated the Instructor Academy with the BMW CCA. I am very excited and looking forward to the spring. Over the winter I plan to have a full cage installed to the car along with some basic maintenance. I may start looking for a nicer, more comfortable, and tighter set of seats too. I will throw some cage pics up once it gets back to the garage. Enjoy the holidays!

Stock tail lights are burnt at bulb connections. Brake lamps were only working sometimes when I wiggle bulb housings. I asked the wifey for new lamps for Christmas. She took care of me and I installed them today. Why not on this 70 degree day in December.

The Trackster decided to be out of the garage for the first time this year. Let's go spring weather! We have a track event in April. Brought it to work, installed Garagistic rear tow hooks (I have a trailer and F150 ready to tow),replaced the RTAB's with polly bushes, replaced the brake fluid (Motul Rbf600), 4 wheel alignment, and a general once over. When I got home I started working on the gauges (I have H20 & Oil press). There are still many things I want to do. The cage is still in the works, scheduled for May. I cant stop looking at seats and Cae shifters, it is a never ending project Lol! Enjoy

First track event of the year is next weekend at Summit Point on the Jefferson Circuit. I have been getting the car and tow vehicle all ready to go. I finished installing a couple gauges in the E36, Stack water temp & oil pressure. I noticed the rotors had very fine surface cracks on them. They would probably have been fine, but I felt safer to replace them. So new rotors all the way around. I drove around pulling my trailer to get used to it last weekend. It wasn't bad at all, but there wasn't a car on it yet. It is nice to have the big tool box on the trailer and plenty of room in the truck for wheels, spares, etc. Ready to go!

Fine surface cracks are not a problem as long as they're very small and don't go from edge to edge.

Thanks AZ. I guess I really never paid too much attention to them in the past. They were very small surface cracks towards the center of the wear area. After searching it on BF and seeing all of probably the worst case scenarios I figured blank rotors aren't all that expensive. I will keep the used rotors I removed as spares. At least it'll feel all nice and smooth for a bit.

Leaving for the 3 day track event tomorrow. It looks to be decent Fri & Sun, with Sat being cold with a chance of morning snow (in April, Yuck!). I'm excited to go it's been a long winter going through track withdrawal. I installed Bimmerworld metal caliper bushings yesterday. Then I loaded the car up for the first time. Now that I have a tow set-up I can go more "racecar" with the 325i. Everyone have a good weekend!

The first Hpde of the season was last weekend. The car performed awesome, the weather was good, it was a great weekend. It was also my first weekend instructing which was a new challenge. I enjoyed it very much. I am ready for the next event, but it is a month away. After the May event I have scheduled the roll cage install. Looking forward to that too! I have been thinking about possibly getting into a little racing with the car, but I am just not sure which direction to go with it yet (TT, Spec E36, Spec3, GTS2, IT...). I would like to pick the least expensive option if there is such a thing lol. Research has already started. It would be much cheaper to sell this car and my M3 to buy a racecar that has already been built, but building it is part of the fun. I know every bit of this car and I'm not sure I could sell it yet. Hmmmm

This is the instructor run group on Sunday afternoon. I am definitely the rookie out here ;)

Hello Mafia. I wanted to get nicer seats for the track car so I went down to OG Racing in VA last weekend. They have a awesome showroom with dozens of seats to try out. I ended up with a Sparco Circuit Seat for drivers side and a Sparco Sprint for pass side (I had to buy a new steering wheel too, I am addicted). The Circuit is super tight for smaller drivers. This is awesome for me but would limit me to small students and instructors on pass side.
We are driving a Bmw Cca event next weekend, and my wife is driving our ZHP at the event :) Then on the way home the e36 track car gets dropped off at the cage builder. It is getting a pretty sweet full cage installed. I am very excited about the cage. Beginning of June I have a Nasa event where I will be going for my Time Trial license. I'd like to try out the Time Trials with Nasa a bit when I am not doing the Bmw events. Will update with cage pics soon. Later

This past weekend we had a 3 day BmwCca event at Summit Main. It was also my wife's first HPDE, she was driving our ZHP. Friday was sunny and warm, but Saturday and Sunday rained all day. It was a great weekend. First the seats I had just installed are awesome. The Circuit really felt snug and was much more comfortable then the Corbeau. The car was great and it definitely surprised me how well the Nt-01 tires gripped even in the wet conditions. Whenever they decided not to grip it was fun controllable sliding that I had a blast with. I took the Zhp out a few times too when my wife wasn't on track to play around with it. Also very fun but definitely needs fresher suspension, stock is worn out. She really enjoyed it and is signed up for our next event. Pretty great weekend. On the way home from the track the E36 was dropped off to the cage builder! Updates soon. Here are a couple pics from the weekend. Enjoy :)

As usual I forgot to run my GoPro all weekend, except for once on Friday. It is mounted to my roll bar and I just forget that it's there. I think I am going to move it back to the windshield mount for the next event. The new seat blocks view of my hands, gauges, and left side of windshield. Using the windshield mount allows a larger view of the track. I did have my Android phone GPS lap timer app going on Friday too which was pretty cool to look at afterwards. This was the one session the GoPro was actually running. Friday is the Instructor Academy day so there are only a few instructors and students out on the track. It's nice to have so much open track, but it's not as entertaining to watch without all the traffic. :)

Hello again Mafia friends.

Thanks Dimitri! I feel the same about the car in your sig! :)

Ha ha Dane, original budget was exceeded a long time ago. It's still not too bad though and building it is the fun part right? :) It will only get worse now as I am looking into racing it with the Bmw Club or maybe Nasa Gts. Still doing research. I will continue to do as many Hpde as I can but the race itch is there.

I have the interior all painted and back together. I needed to trim the dash board a bit, reroute some wiring, and adjust the harness to the new positions. All is good. She is getting a bath and loaded on the trailer tomorrow. I am participating in my first Nasa event and also doing a Time Trial test to be approved for TT. May try a little TT while deciding on the racing stuff. Should be a fun weekend.

I attended my first Nasa event at Summit Point this past weekend. It was a bit different than my normal BmwCca event. There were many more participants as Nasa will run HPDE, Time Trials, W2W Racing, and Hyperdrives throughout the day. It was fun I enjoyed watching the racing in between my track sessions. It was cool to meet different groups of racers, Spec3, GTS, TT, and discuss their classes. I was approved for Time Trials on Saturday and ran my first Time Trial event Sunday. It was fun to add that bit of competitiveness. I also learned about a few contingency programs that can pay out towards your racing gear in exchange for placing stickers on your car. That is pretty cool with me, I dig stickers. Great event it was a lot of fun. I am going to continue to run Time Trials in between BmwCca events and while I am thinking about which direction to take the car with a wheel to wheel racing class that is the most budget friendly for me. Ha ha.

I stickered up the Budget Track Car, purchased a My Laps Transponder, and changed some fluids. Today I took the car to Agile Auto in MD. My buddies work there and I wanted to weigh the car since the addition of the cage etc. I was pretty stoked with the results and the car is almost perfectly corner balanced. 2655 with 1/2 tank of fuel and the stock BMW Ds1 wheels. Enjoy the weekend!

I have been working on the track car whenever possible. I added some decals, drilled out & removed the steering column lock spring, installed a MyLaps transponder for Time Trials. I am in VA right now driving the new track- Dominion Raceway. It is a pretty cool track and the facility is very nice. I took the Nasa instructor clinic today. So I will be instructing Nasa Hpde, and running my car in TT. I will continue to do all the BmwCca events as well. I plan to get some video this weekend especially since the track just opened (it is still very much under construction ).

Drilled out column lock and removed spring from the mechanism.

Well after a few years of tracking the 325i and having tons of fun with her, she finally well you'll see.
Recently there were a couple awesome weekends of this....
26694
26695

And then one Sunday afternoon at Dominion Raceway this happened at @100mph. There was a bit of smoke from exhaust and coolant running from my air filter. I towed her home and removed the head to find cyl#4 is no longer with me. Piston has left the building. RIP M50.
26696
So then this happened.
26697
And then I found one of these. S52 to become Obd1.
26698
Now it's getting very close to coming back to life. She will be even greater as a 332i. :)

Hey Justin. My friend did the dyno at his shop in Shrewsbury. He likes the car (minus getting in or out lol). They usually modify muscle cars, hot rods etc. He really wants to attend a Hpde with his Cobra. So I will try to get him out there. It was fun though to see it in action. I am going to go back at some point with my War chip adapter/laptop and play @ with it a bit. Hope all is good buddy. I've been looking for you at Cars n Coffee when I go. Ttyl

I have been out in the garage getting the car ready for a Bmw Cca event next weekend. Installed a new set of Hawk pads, looked everything other. I bought a set of lightly used Hankook C51 slicks from a friend and mounted them up. My Nitto Nt-01 have over 14 days on them this year and I wasn't sure they'd survive the 3 day event next week. It'll be cool to try a stickier tire ;) along with fresh brakes, and more power. Looking forward to it.

Awesome. That sounds like a good formula. Add a half qt of oil to prevent oil starvation with the stickier compound.

I've been super busy on the weekends to get up to HV. I'm hoping now that I have my car back I can make an appearance in October.

Thanks! I imagine that I was pretty close to the budget until this year. So anything before 2016 was probably close. I saved a lot of money by buying used parts when possible, and obviously doing all the labor saves you a ton. This year though with the full cage, new seats, and engine I definitely doubled it. It's ok though its been a 5 year project and a whole lot of fun.

If you decide to build a track car the only suggestion I have is pick a class you may race in and build towards that. At first I just wanted a fun Hpde car. Then time goes on and you will want to race. Now I look at classes to run in and wish I did a few things differently. Have a good one! :)

Really good point! I am at the threshold for such an endeavour. Mods and upgrades are great for a HPDE or lapping track rat, but if you want to race it in SCCA, NASA, BMWCCA, etc... you need to know what you are getting into with respect to the build. Would suck buying a bunch of cool upgrade parts only to find out that the new (insert kit here) is prohibited in SpecE46 or ITR, as examples.

Hey Mafia. The e36 has been sitting since November. I installed a RTD solid mount shifter. It's very nice to use and feels solid. I lost 5th gear out of two Getrag gearboxes last year so now I am working on a ZF trans swap. Supposedly a stronger trans, find out soon. I had to acquire trans, and the driveshaft. Bolted a fresh center bearing and guibo to the ZF driveshaft. Hopefully get everything switched around next weekend. Take it easy guys :)

Hey Oli77. The original trans had 160k on it with 5 years of track use. On track 5th stopped engaging. You could not even force it in. The second trans started grinding 5th due to a bad syncro. It worked for a while but now it's unusable also. E36 transmissions are pretty cheap so I went with the ZF from the M3. Should be stronger and better matched for the S52 engine. :)

Lmao, yep that's Derek!

I am still undecided as far as classing, but I will either do Bmw Club Racing or GTS. We also do track support for a few cars and I may take up a offer in a Spec E30 some time too. I was originally thinking Gts2, but I don't really want to add a couple hundred pounds to the car or lose power using restrictors. I have been researching this a lot recently. Gts3 is a option with car as it sits but I know I would be slaughtered lol. Before I add aero or any other mods I will try to decide. I will probably only do 2-3 races a season to start, and continue instructing & TT in between. Look forward to meeting you in May. See you there.

So this happened to my front rotors. I am glad I noticed it as could end badly. I purchased new ATE rotors, and started my brake cooling kit. Its a track car so it looks a little Mad Max as I wasn't worried about the looks. I just need to cool these brakes down. They get worked more and more as driving skills progress. I think a e46 330i brake upgrade will be in the near future, but for now cooling should help. Got the ducts installed, will run the hoses this week. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170410/63aebfc063a49ef500276d482c0ec05f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170410/7cac8c4c2cd61c0bc1ab6f25bf57417b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170410/f454b6e97f76658e9cda2730a0a98ff7.jpg

Hey guys. The original budget with the price of the car was 6k definitely a "budget track car". The thread started in 2011, and I was within or close to the budget until last year. The car itself was 2k and most items I had purchased used (seats rollbar etc.) I work as a tech at a performance shop as well so all the labor was free.
Last year I spent my total budget alone with unplanned engine failure, full cage, better/safer seats, etc. The build will never be done as there are always changes, repairs, and upgrades to be made. Going into its 7th year as a track toy I still love this e36 and it performs awesome at what it was built for. It will probably become a full road race car to run in BmwCca club racing within the next year or two. :) it will be fun!

Very cool.. I registered yesterday (last minute as always lol), have the zhp up on the lift getting some work done. Maybe I could request you as my instructor if you don't already have another student lined up??

Sounds good. I do not have anything lined up as far as students, usually find out day of event. You can email Jason through MsReg and request me as an instructor (BobbyGetz). I am going to hopefully be taking our ZHP as well :)

The E36 has been hanging out in the garage since the May race school. The last couple events I chose to enjoy our ZHP on the track. My next event is in a couple weeks at Dominion Raceway so I drove the car to work to look it over and do a nut & bolt.
I saved a used Subaru front splitter that was being thrown away and decided to make a undertray from it. I traced the e36 bumper, cut it, bolted the front to the bumper, and the rear to the subframe with threaded inserts. While the car was on the lift I also corner balanced the E36 again. It was set up last year but I had made some changes to the car since then. It all turned out great and she is all balanced out :)

The corner balance results with driver, half tank of fuel, and without driver for total vehicle weight. As far as total weight I have been thinking about more weight loss in the car by gutting the front doors of glass/regulators/all wiring & module related to windows and locking system etc. I would imagine wouldn't be too hard to get from 2656lbs down into 25XXlbs.

TrackDaze event at Dominion Raceway was a blast. The E36 felt great, and I even took the ZHP out for a session :)

Just finished the season off with NASA's Fall Finale on the freshly paved Summit Point Main Circuit. It was a bit cold, but a great weekend. The new pavement is super smooth and everyone was beating their previous lap times. I set my fastest lap as well.
The itch to race wheel to wheel will not go away. This winter I plan to set the car up to go racing this spring. I am still trying to decide on a class, this seems to be the hardest part. As of now I am leaning towards Bmw Club Racing in the I-Sport class, but I-Prepared or NASA's GTS look appealing as well but require aero $$$. Decisions. Ready for spring to get here. A big list of maintenance for the e36 that needs to get done asap. I received my rookie CCA Club race license. Very excited to participate in my first race this season. I just need to decide whether to run the car in i-sport or I-prepared. Either way a bunch of stuff to do. Need to add safety nets, fire system, up to date belts, & a Hans. Depending on which class I need to remove some mods or add Aero & more mods. Choices.... https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180228/223390dd9a88ba9163beeeae49d432e3.jpg

Its been a busy summer. The E36 has been on track a bunch of times & has been great. I haven't done anything but maintenance to the car this year. No cool pics of fancy parts. But here are a couple action shots. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180916/9bf9040bde9ff85df6342e1d2255d4b9.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180916/d1d26339c6f575e49051e878867fd36c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180916/c8584243a1cb8cefd6f79c5ecd3a06ec.jpg
