Fun fact:
I cracked my rim during a Thunderhill 5-mile HDPE back in May. I emailed Apex Race Parts yesterday about getting a replacement rim and if I could possibly get discount. I was hoping my pics of my car on their site would help, haha.

Customer service replied with an awesome preposition:

Dec 14, 11:58 MST
Hi Derek,
After doing some digging, I was able to find your previous order. An option that we would like to offer you would be to take advantage of our 50% replacement program. This unofficial program is still being molded overtime, but in order to go above and beyond for our customers, we have offered replacement wheels at 50% off of MSRP, in exchange for the damaged wheels in return. Instead of spending dollars on trying to fix/repair damaged wheels, and not really knowing what the long term effects may be, this replacement program allows us to quality control damaged wheels while providing our customers with a cost effective alternative.
There are two ways we can move forward with this program:
1. You bring the damaged wheel back to us, and we sell you a replacement for 50% off MSRP.
2. We sell you a new wheel for full MSRP, and once we receive the damaged wheel, we will credit you back 50% of the MSRP.
Please let me know which option you would like to take advantage of.

TLDR; ApexRaceparts has a 50% Discount on a new rim if you exchange the damage rim.

I'm not 100% sure if this requires the rim to be purchased directly from Apex or not but I sure as hell am happy about it. It is not official on their site but CS Rep mentioned that if you contact them about replacing a damaged rim, they will offer this solution. I think they need to broadcast this more!!
I selected option 2 and the rim should arrive tomorrow. (I'm about 60 miles away from their warehouse but I don't want to drive in traffic to pick it up)

I'm ordering 245/40/17 Michelin Pilot Super Sports for the Apexs. I'm don't go to the track as often as I used to so PSS will be a nice set for the street.

When I installed the corsa exhaust I felt the engine revved more freely, could be placebo but it definitely didn't reduce the power output...

It's super weird. My vanos needs to be redone I know that. But even with the stock exhaust I could give it a little gas and it would respond quick. Now it lags. I don't get it.

To be fair, with my fair share of driving other faster cars, it was hard to say the almost negligible difference in power. If anything, I would imagine you lose a little bit of lower end torque and gain some better performance up top since the exhaust can breathe a little better. But besides the point, I just enjoy the sound.

Edit:

My ARC8 arrived today and I have scheduled an appointment for new tires Monday.

Update:

Michelin Pilot Super Sports 245/40/17 were installed on my APEX ARC8s. Apex has an unofficial program to exchange a damaged rim with a new one for 50% off MSRP. I initially emailed APEX in hopes for a discount for a cracked rim and when they replied back with this program, I could not refuse. Welding the crack would've cost me around $100 and now a new wheel was somewhere on the verge of $130. Can't argue with that! It ain't a worth post without pics, so here are 3.

Also work was slow today and I had my OBDII cable so I fiddled with NCSexpert.

I modified a few values today. In one of the coding threads, Ryan mentions modifying the MK60 gear torque values to the M3 values. I never did that and been pending for over 2 years. I added the M3 values to C04 DATEN files and threw the option 4 and 3 on the parameters. I drove it around but I have no idea if it is changed anything yet since I didn't activate DSC yet. I found it interesting when I read the KMB parameters, the SCHEWELL_2 was not present. I modified the aktiv data value from 00,FF to 01,1F per terra's suggesting in one of the older threads. This value is from a Z4 and seems to activate BFD stage3 right before ABS. I had to add it manually to the MAN file and write it in.

MK60_C04:
GEARMOMENTREGLER_MAX_HA_2 wert_01 -> wert_04 Data Value 07
GEARMOMENTREGLER_MIN_HA_2 wert_05 -> wert_03 Data Value 08

AKMB_C08:
GRENZWERT_VERZ_SCHEWELL_2 aktiv Data Value 00,FF -> 01,1F

I'll have to test all of these soon.

Cheers and Happy New Years fellas!

I hope to get a new commuter soon and work on Euro City Lights for this car. :D

In an effort to keep the car close to Euro-Spec in terms of lighting, I am going citylights! I ordered a few items already and waiting on a few more things. I have this DIY to thank for motivating me to do it the OE way. bimmerbrothers.com/e46-m3-city-light-retrofit/

Some people don't like it but I like it cause its Euro-Spec and I rather have my city lights as DRL than my highbeams at low brightness. I'm not a fan of angel eyes myself so here is the solution!

I decided to work on my city lights installation this past Sunday and I have to say it was a great success!

A large base of my installation was based on the instructions from one of the most detailed DIY I've seen on the web: http://bimmerbrothers.com/e46-m3-city-light-retrofit/

Parts required:

63128380205 City Light Housing Quantity: 2
61138373332 City Light Housing connector Quantity: 2
61130007256 Red wire + crimped pin for City Light connector Quantity: 2
61130006624 White wire + crimped pin for City Light connector Quantity: 2
61130008998 LCM Wire + crimped pin for LCM harness Quantity: 2
14ft Blue/Black stripe 20 ga Wire
14ft Green/Black stripe 20ga Wire
10ft Brown 20ga wire
2 o-ring 20ga terminals for ground
4 112 o-ring connectors
2 W5W bulbs (194/T10 5W bulbs)
Heatshrink tubing
(optional) Electrical tape (non-adhesive)

I ordered a little more wiring than needed (20ft) so the total cost ended up around $84 for all the parts. Bimmer brothers suggested EFIconnection for getting the wiring and I believe it was around $0.68 per foot. Shipping was a little expensive so that added a bit to the price. YMMV for pricing!

Tools required:

Torx T20
10mm
8mm
Philips Screwdriver
Heatgun/Blowdryer
Drill with at least a 1/2inch drill bit
Filer
Computer w/ NCSexpert working and OBDII cable.

## Remove headlights.
1st step was to remove the headlights. Remove the corners with philips screwdriver and unbolt the headlights with the 8mm socket. Remove the headlight trim panel and remove the headlight from the car. Simple :)

http://i.imgur.com/U3kGplCl.jpg

## Drill holes for city lights
I started with a small hole to be a pilot hole. I matched a bit to the city light housing diameter started to drill. I don't remember the drill bit size but it was around 1/2 inch. A small file was used to notch out the two different tab sizes. As noted by the bimmerbrothers, I used 2 112 O-rings and the OEM O-ring as the one sealing against the headlight.

http://i.imgur.com/HvBsvfwl.jpg

# Wiring

Large bulk of the installation is routing wires. I aimed to be as close to the OE wiring routes as possible. Tip: Ziptie + gaft tape to the wire help move the wire through grommets.

## Route Driver side wiring
Open up the DME black cover with the torx bit and unplug the DME and detach the white harness to access the firewall hole to the cabin. The DME box has a little nub below the opening for headlight harness. I pierced the nub with a screwdriver and routed my green wiring through here towards the DME box. Once through, I routed the wire through a half-moon shape vent on the back of the firewall. On the engine bay side, the wire was lined up with the headlight harness route to the headlight.

http://i.imgur.com/gYDXAQtl.jpg

## Inside Cabin
I removed the LCM and undid the bottom panel below the driver side. I could see the DME half-moon vent hole where I routed my green wire. I traced the wire and routed towards the LCM X12 Harness. I also ran the blue wire (passenger side) from below to meet the green wire at the end of the X12 Harness. I used the LCM pins I bought (albeit they were brown wires) and lineman spliced the wires w/ heatshrink to cover it. I opened up the harness and slipped the pins into to the LCM: Pin 45 = Green, Pin 44 = Blue.

http://i.imgur.com/qH87ogil.jpg

## Route Passenger side wiring
From the LCM, I routed the blue wire to follow the factory harness going over the steering column and through the loom to the passenger side. I dropped the glovebox and pieced one of the two nubs below the exit to the drug bin hole. Once out there, there is another grommet to route though and follow the passenger side harness to the headlight. Pic below if you need it.

## Grounds
Each side has a ground block where I could tap for the grounds for the city lights. I added an O-ring and followed the factory grounds back to the headlight harness. I didn't take a pic of this cause its straight forward.

## Citylight Connector
Tip: I used the red citylight pin connector for power and the white for ground. I soldered these together and heatshrinked the connection and plugged the pins into the citylight connector. Basically ready for a citylight!

# Cleanup: Wrap up the wires
I used some non-adhesive electric tape and regular e-tape at the ends for easier removal in the future. I wrapped the wire over the existing harness instead of pulling all the existing e-tape to redo the wires.

## Driver Side

# Coding
The last portion of this DIY is to code in the pin 44/45 to work as parking lights. Originally, I set my vehicle order to EV51 (euro) and wrote the FA to the LCM. Unfortunately I ran into a snag here and the city lights would not light up. I checked with a multi-meter for continuity to see under 9ohms and voltage was at 12V. Amperage was below 1mA so I knew my wiring was correct. After about an hour of troubleshooting the main wiring to find no faults, (I also ate lunch as well) I blanked my MAN file and reset the LCM to default values on the EV51. Low and Behold! The city lights work now! Rather than be satisfied with this, I went ahead and copied the default EV51 parameters and compared it to the factory US EV53. I copied below what the actual parameters I changed to get this to work. Now I don't know if they were all necessary but I will try to figure out which one is necessary in the future when I have more time with my computer and the car.

## Differences between EV51 (Euro/Left) and EV53 (USDM/Right) LCM parameters:

## NCSExpert parameters changed:

All in all, this was a fun project to get the EDM setup. The City lights are now setup with warm/cold checks for bulb out warnings as well as set up as my DRL and parking lights. It also lights up with the "one side parking light function." like how the turn signals used to be. My car is now euro-lighted out w/ Euro OE city lights, Euro OE Clears all around and rear fog switch. :D

The things we do for our cars..ha! I hope this post wasn't too long. I'll re-post it into the DIY section eventually.

I forgot to mention I "upgraded" my Bluetooth setup in my car

I picked an Anker Soundsync for the sake that it has skip functionality. I really miss that feature from my golf TDI.

I also picked up a wizgear magnetic mount as I find myself having issues pulling my phone off my old kenu mount when getting out of the car. So far it's been great just to hover my phone over the mount to just magically mount.

Overall I'm happy with the setup and having skip functionality is amazing for podcasts with audio commercials!

Still waiting on my civic to come in..Then I can focus on fixing the zhp again. :)

Can you give a review on the Anker product vs anything you've used in the past and what your setup was for install?

I just have a simple Bluetooth receiver that's powered by USB power in my glove box with the OEM Aux Jack into the dongle. But it has no call/mic abilities. One thing is it's fully out of sight but I'd like the ability to skip without going to the phone when driving.

Sure thing Trevor!

I believe my previous Bluetooth reciever is the same one you purchased. I vaguely remember this conversation on the forums when I was looking for bluetooth solution way back in the day. It's a tiny little USB that plugs in and has a 3.5mm output. It had an issue with buzzing and I needed a ground loop isolator to fix it.

Previous setup:
OEM AUX inside the sunglasses compartment
Ground Loop Isolator
USB BT Reciever
BMW 2 port USB DC Adapter

I'm not going to lie, this was a "get the basic job done" type of scenario. When I purchased this setup, the ZHP is purely a weekend/track car. I wanted bluetooth for the drives to the racetrack and not having skip was not a major priority at the time.

New setup:
OEM Aux inside the sunglasses compartment
Anker Soundsync BT 4.0 ($21.99 when I bought it)
BMW 2 power USB DC Adapter

I did not really aim to mount this very elegantly. The USB and 3.5mm are permanently attached as a Y-Cable to the multifunction buttons which prevented a nicer tuck until I take some time to run a 12V swtiched source behind the dash there. For now I am using the USB 2port DC adapter as shown with the wires in the pics. One wire goes from the multifunction button goes into the sunglasses holder and one wire comes back out for power. The extra wire running across the ash tray is my power source to my Phone when I mount it to the magnetic mount.

Impressions so far:

Audio Streaming: Audio quality definitely improved. If I had to guess, the USB BT Reciever in my previous setup was Bluetooth 2.0. Since the Anker is a 4.0 device and geared more towards stereo audio streaming, it evened out the audio input. Previously I had to use the equalizer to increase treble and bass to liven up the soundstage. Now, my equalizer is close to flat with a little treble and one tick up for bass.

Buttons: The main reason for buying a new setup was for the skip button. I started commuting in my ZHP again after selling my TDI Golf and since I commute 1.5-2hrs one-way for work, I like listening to podcasts to keep myself from getting into trouble (speeding). Podcasts have commercials and I started to miss the skip button from any new car that supports AVRCP profiles (BT remote control). I can immediate confirm the skip button works! Hallejuah! The center button pauses/starts last audio player. If you hold the center button, Siri is activated. It all works as intended.

Phone calls: I definitely fall into the category of a user who doesn't use a phone to talk anymore. From the 2-3 phone calls I had in the past 2 weeks on the road, I ask callers for a review of my voice quality and was met with acceptable as an OE solution in newer cars. Not the best, but also clear enough to hear even over the TSE3. :)

Notes:
-This may not be a full con for some, but the y cable does make routing a challenge if the USB power and AUX are not in the same location.
-Since I'm using the ashtray power, this bluetooth setup is not turning off with the car. Not the fault of the BT reciever but rather my setup's limitation. Temporarily, I am removing the USB everytime I get out of the car (which happens to be the same thing that I had to do in my previous setup)

The cable is fairly long but I'm not sure if it is enough to route behind all the way to the glovebox. I haven't really thought it through on how to hide the wires. My initial plan was to build a USB Plug that was wired to a 12V switched source behind the ashtray and move the aux to the ashtray. I could then route the wire, behind the steering column and go behind the dash to the ashtray. This is not a well-thought plan yet as I haven't looked at the routing areas on how to go about doing this.

I also didn't look into 12V-5V stepdown transformers and USB setups.

One thing to note and I'll edit it, is the button is attached via 3M sticky tape. Kinda silly that it isn't a magnetic removable unit like the others ones I looked at, but it's fine for my car.

Is the dash material thin enough for two neodymium magnets to attract?

Maybe trim material can have a thin magnet behind and then 3M tape a strong magnet on the Anker protected with thin rubber so it doesn't scratch the trim.

I have seen hardwire USB kits with fuse taps that you can buy in amazon for around $12. Then you can route everything to the glove box without hacking up anything. That's my setup. 100% reversible with no holes.

I somehow forgot to post. I don't think its thin enough for magnets. I want it in the glove but I do want to reroute. Either way, I might just say screw it and get one of those headunits ;) hahaha

If you do use the extensions make sure you tape them up... Last thing you want is them coming apart when they are buried behind the dash

Anker is shipping out a new BT receiver.

I took today off and did a few maintenance items.

1. Smog.
2. Oil Change.
3. Transmission Fluid change.

Smog was simple and easy. Oil change as well. Transmission fluid felt weird putting in ATF in there but that's what Redline recommends!

On another note, my thermostat is starting to be funny. The past couple of days, I noticed my temp needle was lower than usual. It was visuably lower because of the temp buffer mod that Terra provided instructions for. http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=1013600

http://i.imgur.com/xmB1FmOm.png

I setup the test menu while on my commute and on menu 7.0, it has been reading 75C-80C. It would never reach 90C where I normally would see it. My cooling system has been in the car for 50k and about 7 years so I think it's time for a refresh.

Of course today while testing, the temp is back to normal at 90C. It is definitely failing and it's time to order maintenance parts. :)

Unless you have your temp gauge corrected, top dead center is anywhere between 75 and 115 degrees Celcius. Huge range, so TDC doesn't really mean anything with a stock-coded temp gauge unfortunately.

Agreed. 75-115C is too large of a range to figure out what is going on. I really like the change where 110C is redline. It allows for a quick reaction, than 120C to 3/4th.

The past few days, the thermostat is showing around 85-90C so it's working normally as can be. I will continue to monitor it until I can order the cooling system refresh parts. I'm hoping my new commuter comes in before that so I don't have to rush getting this done.

Fun fact:

194 bulbs are not all the same.

Turns out the W5W bulb in the BMWs are 12V 6W instead of the conventional 5W common ones. They are xenon-filled 12V 6W size W5W bulbs.

BMW Part No: 63217160908

RMeuro is the cheapest I found it. They sell the OSRAM version (OEM) and it's at $0.97 vs the $4.xx at the dealership.

http://i.imgur.com/fSq17p4l.jpg

Passenger side is the 85 lumens 6W, and the driver side is the 50 lumens 5W. It isn't noticable in the pictures, but it is brighter in person.

On another note, I pulled the 194 map lights in my civic and they are 12V 8W....:rofl

I'm a Recaro guy and Recaro aren't good ontp the wallet. The entry level seat is the pole position (PP) It's a little wider than the SPG and a bit more forgiving getting in and out of the seat. I actually wanted to switch my seat to PP but it didn't make financial sense.

You can always look for used seats if you aren't planning to race in competitions requiring up to date certifications.

Nothing much to report.

I stopped dailying the car in late March and I haven't started the car till yesterday. Battery was shot. I threw on the Cytek MUS 4.3 charger and set it to recondition. 4 hours later, the car started right up. I did a few laps of the car and washed it, and parked it back in the garage. A sad life it has right now.

I had some 750 lumen 194 CANBUS LED bulbs laying around (They were too bright for my Civic's interior dome lights) so I threw them into the ZHP as DRLs.

I can't say I like the look but I'll give it a go for a little while.

Few items to Buy/Do:

Cooling System Refresh
Oil leak from somewhere (I suspect Oil Pan?)
Vibration coming from the Front
New Track Pads

Time will tell when I decide to do these. I've been a bit busy with life and since the car lives at my grandparents garage, I don't really get to drive it as often as I like. It involves a fair amount of pre-meditation to get that going.

I'm getting to the point where I just want to throw it at a shop and left them figure it out. The horror!

You're best off driving in the off-peak season. We drove it to the cafe and back. On the way there, traffic was relatively clear, with barely anyone holding us up. On the way back, however, we kept having to stop because we kept catching up to this ridiculously slow (below the speed limit) biker. But, for those moments we weren't being held up, it was pure magic.

That's how Mt. Hamilton is a very fun road. Since the road was paved when horses were around, the grade of descent is 6%. Bikers LOVE this road. It is hard to drive fast on the weekends.

It seems to be speed sensitive. It happens around 55-70mph (at least the more apparent.)

Things I've tried to check:
I've replaced my tires, rebalanced them.
Check bearings and tie rods with 3/9 and 12/6 checks.

Only thing I can think is, that I have a 3mm spacer and it might be causing the issue? I'll have to try a 12.5mm spacer to see if it does anything. If anything I can get my old RPF1s from my cousin and test clearance without spacers. If it clears, I can test them out for a bit to see if that resolves anything.

If you don't have hub extenders then I'd bet money on the 3mm spacer being the issue. I had that exact problem with 5mm spacers without hub extenders. The 12.5mm spacers surely have a hub/lip on them so that should work.

Update:

Saturday, I drove around my Fiancee's E30 in preparation for emission testing. I have to say, this car is very fun and mechanical compared to the E46.

Specs:
M50 swap
Ireland Engineering Stage 3 Race Springs w/ Bilstien Sports
Recaro SR3 w/ Leman Confetti centers
Euro E30 Clock

The car needs some love and attention to comestics soon but overall its on incredible car to drive.

I place the ZHP on a lift to determine the oil leak and swap spacers.

http://i.imgur.com/07muiETh.jpg

Oil pan is definitely the culprit for the leak.
I swapped the 3mm spacer for a 12.5mm spacer and the steering vibration amplified on the freeway at 60mph in neutral or in gear.

The last pic I took, I slapped the 12.5mm spacer in the rear and the 3mm in the front. I also swapped the newer ARC8 up front and the rear left driver up to the front driver. Vibration in the steering wheel is still there but far less than with the 12.5mm spacer. I am now stumped. I may buy new tires for the M135 rims or borrow my cousin's rims to test out.

But I would remove the spacers, clean the hubs and see if the issue is still there.

Long story short:

The ZHP will be up for sale. Official post will be posted once I get proper detailing/pictures. I do not plan to part out the ZHP but if the car doesn't sell, I may.

I'm aiming to replace it with an M car but unsure which model as of yet.

It's obviously a little late to chime in if you've decided to sell, but I had nothing but problems with 12.5s. ZHPizza can explain better, but it's something about the hub extension not being deep enough to get a good seating. I swapped my 12.5s for his 15s to test (expecting things to get worse) and the vibrations completely disappeared. I have 3mm Macht spacers in the back and haven't had any issues.

I'm unclear on the issue too. I have 3mm installed and the issue is rather minimal compared to the 12.5mm. I don't remember having issues with my stock 135s on the 12.5mm. The reason I got 12.5mm instead of 10mm was because of the lip issue. I thought the 12.5 was meant to resolve that issue. Either way, it's minimal.

Either way, I'm looking to jump into an M3. The ZHP was originally purchased as a daily driver during my college years. Since then, I now have a commuter car, and the ZHP has been sitting. I think I've reached a point in the ZHP's life where it needs some major changes to be faster in HPDE days. The biggest gripe right now is the lack of power. I maybe able to keep up with some cars in corners, but man, the ZHP just gets walked on straights.

I thought a few ways to do this:

#Supercharger
As a turbo car owner, I know heat is always the number enemy. A proper TS2 would cost me around at least $8k and ultimately fail emissions miserably.

#S54 swap
This is a nice choice but it would be along the same price as the supercharger. If I were to do the swap, I would want to do the flares, do everything. That adds up and then becomes too nice to want to push any harder on the track. That ultimately defeats the purpose of getting a faster car for HPDEs..

#Sell car, get M.
At roughly the same cost as the swaps, I can get an E46 M3 and build on a similar platform with more potential.

I'll miss the ZHP, I hope I can find a good home for it. It basically needs cooling system PM and thats really about it. The rest of the car is ready to enjoy some mountain roads. :)

If you have $8-12K budgeted just to being faster on the track then have at it. At least an M3 shouldn't depreciate as much when it's time to sell, of you do.

The ///M tax is high on mods but with patience you can keep the costs down to just a bit more than 330 mods.

A properly setup E46 M3 with about $2-3K into suspension, $2K for wheels/tires, another $1K for rod bearing maintenance, $1.5K for RACP/subframe (maybe more for bushings), $1K for vanos and exhaust hub tab bullet proofing, $4K carbon intake/headers and tune, should get you on a good start to being able to start keeping up with higher end, moderately experienced GT3s on the track.

Bang for buck can probably be had elsewhere but I know E46 M ownership can be more of an emotional decision rather than full logic. LOL

That sounds about right. That puts me into about $30k range assuming I probably will find one at $18k or so.

At $30k, I can probably spend a little bit more and get a E90 M3. Throw some Swift Spec R springs, camber plates + rims/tires and I got a car that is already faster than my ZHP by many seconds.

It's a touch decision because the E46 M3 and the E9x M3s are getting within 5-6k of each other.

Rovert

E90M you'll want some way aggressive pads and fluid. My friend has an E46M and an E90M that are both tracked. The big difference in the "heavier" E90 is that it needs way bigger brakes for high-speed tracking. After two laps of a 1.4 mile road course track built to FIA standards, the E90M brakes are overheating and need to be cooled.

You'll have to deal with similar rod bearing issues as S54. Two throttle actuators need replacing within short intervals which are $1000 each if I remember.

If you daily drive an E90 S65 expect fuel costs to be dramatically more over a ZHP (12-14MPG City and 18 Hwy). If you daily an E46M, fuel will be more similar with a couple MPG decrease. I get around 20MPG suburb/city and upwards of 30 on the highway with the S54. Sometimes if the weather is right and traffic conditions permit I'll surpass 30. Max I've gotten on a long straight trip was 34MPG.

It won't be daily driven since I have a Honda Civic for that. Since I started commuting for work, the mileage on the ZHP dramatically dropped. One year it was down to 1500 miles for the year.

My assumption for the E9x:
-Rod bearings will be done by me if it has not been done by PO, $800 for parts? unsure about Labor
-Throttle actuators are $650 each from FCP Euro, so about $1300 in parts alone and the DIY looks fairly straight forward. I wonder how long they last?
-Brakes were definitely going to be an issue in both cars. I would most likely go with AP Racing and/or StopTech BBK with some GLoc R12 pads or Carbotech XP12s or PFC01/06s.
-Maintenance (Cooling, bushings, etc)
-Rims/Tires (Probably do Apex EC7s)

My assumption for the E46:
-Rod Bearings
-Vanos Hub
-Subframe (if not done, Vince subframe reinforcement)
-Suspension (I probably shell out for MCS 2WNR)
-Brakes (Most likely a Stoptech BBK)
-Maintenance (Cooling, Bushings, etc)
-Rims/Tires (Varies but I would like the APEX setup again)

It's really a moot point since the car is going to be driven as a weekend/HDPE car. I like the design of the E46 but its so hard to find a nice one for a price not close to the E90.

3200 vs 3700 seems like very little in weight difference but I can definitely see that being a problem with brakes. :)

Rovert
08-09-2017, 01:51 PM
My friend tracks his E46M without anything but different pads/fluid. His is a comp pack so I think the rotors are bigger by just a little. It's enough to keep the brakes from cooking out there on the track. He prefers the E46 over the E90 on the track as the E46 can transition weight balance faster.

If it's a track car then don't look for a minty one. It's going to get dinged and chipped. It's being hammered on most of the time. It's there for your enjoyment and lap times. If your on the track you probably don't have insurance coverage so don't go crazy about a clean exterior.

There's a reason why the E46M is sometimes a similar cost as an E90....and I see it staying that way.

Another thought is that since this "racecar" is more of a hobby piece like expensive hockey equipment, because of higher speeds and worse consequences, if the car gets wrecked, depending on damage you can just swap most parts into another E46 replacement. There will always be a car that is in maintenance need and being sold out of ignorance.

I was just talking to a border guard for five minutes about M3 maintenance and he was trying to decide on E92 or E46. Because he doesn't really know...be purchased an IS-F.

Yes facelift is a must. The DSC system is a less intrusive and you can code in M track mode to keep you semi safe in the wet. You can also code in shift lights on a manual like SMG has with the RPM warmup lights. Not that you'll need them, I've just about learned the sound of 7,000 before I initiate upshift at 8,000. LOL I don't always do it. Shifting at 8K is more just for sound but it sometimes doesn't feel right on the next gear. My 1st to 2nd always feels better with a shorter 7K shift. Probably because of how tall the gear is. I'll get a proper surge into 2nd. Sometimes 8K will end up bogging 2nd or chirping so hard traction control goes off. LOL

The hard decision right now is whether I want a street car than can track (E90 M3) or a track car that I can street (e46 M3).

The E90 is more expensive at initial costs and if I only plan to do 1-2 HPDE a year, it might be okay. If I plan to do every other month, the E46 M3 makes way more sense.

E90 would have to be LCI, so 2009+
E92 would be at least 2009+ if the price is cheap so I could buy LCI tails :)

The decision is tough!!

Why don't you get an E46 right now while it's at its prime. Then grow into an E90 a year or two after? The E46 won't lose much resale while you play.

It'll really help you learn the differences between the progression of vehicles from the ZHP. That would be an awesome experience for you!

## Probably one of the final updates on the car by me.

On August 8th, I dropped off my car to a friend for a pre-sale detail and photoshoot. This consisted a full detail w/ paint correction and for sale-style photoshoot. Since it was not my friend's day job, he worked on it after work over a course of a week. He sent pictures of the progress and it provided me with utter joy to see the car in that great of a condition. Sadly, I already made my decision to move on, and I think it is for the best.

I made a few mentions on here and the facebook group that my car was being setup for sale and I spoke with a few folks about it. One thing led to another and one of the ZHP Facebook Group members is purchasing the vehicle from me. Dustin from Georgia who is currently out in my neck of the woods, happily became the eyes of the future owner for viewing the car this past tuesday.

Long story short, a deposit has been made; rest of the money coming next week. The car will most likely be shipped out middle of next week. I'll leave the owner to mention himself here but I think he is more active on the ZHP Facebook Group than here.

I thought I share the pics since they are so wonderful.

Indeed! The ZHP is just about at the point where it needs nothing but maintenance. Trucker still hasn't showed up and was expected from 9am-12noon. It's 2:39PM now and he is stuck in traffic..

I was looking at production numbers of the E90 M3 and the aggregated data shows that there are about 1055 E90 LCI 6MT out there in US/CA. That is one small pool for me to hunt down a car.

The requirements at the moment:

Year: 2009+
Transmission: Manual
Interior: Black
Exterior: Not Red.
Options: Nav for the screen.

Ideal options but not required: EDC, ZCP, Comfort Access, Cold Weather.

What was the mileage when you bought it and sold it?

Either way good luck with your next car.

Derek, I just finished reading this entire thread from start to finish! I must say I knew that you had sold the car before I started reading but I wasn't prepared for how emotional it was to read about it after following the thread along for the last few days!

I admire all of the work and effort that you have put into the zhp, you truly did a wonderful job and have inspired me get out to a track with my own in the near future. I wish you all the best in your next project and hope to read all about it as well!

Ps I think you can't go wrong with either option but my vote would be E46 M first and then move on to an E9x later.

Incredible! I didn't expect anyone to read through. That is sure a lot of pages. :)

Thanks for the suggestion! I made a decision already though..

wow looks awesome! congrats on the purchase.

I have a lot of free time to kill at work, I love reading good build threads that have a lot of detailed pics and such but my wallet hates when I do that since I almost always want to go out and pick up so more pieces for mine lol

Take it out for a track day, you will have fun even in its current state (judging by your signature)

I'm sure it would be a blast but I'm also sure that it will only take one time for me to get hooked. I'll have to wait for summer, it gets kinda cold up here lol but definitely wanna try it out. I have a few parts waiting to get put on until I have a spare moment that my wife isn't getting me to do projects around the house.

Rear sway bar bushings
Z4M FCABs
ZHP control arms

She should ride really nice after those get tackled

Thank you for doing the right thing re: the ECE tail lights! Damn you BMW for this red turn signal garbage you've been doing nowadays...

By the way, I think this update went in the wrong thread. :)
