View Full Version : New guy - 04 ZHP and other toys

New member here :hi

I'm gonna risk immediate exclusion from your ranks by admitting I fell into a ZHP by accident... In my defense, I was looking for a commuter to replace my beater 528i and spare some miles on my other car. I was thinking a stick shift 330i or CI, as I have kids to ferry to school... But I accidentally spotted that 2004 330CI ZHP, and when I saw the alcantara interior, I was smitten... I mean weak at the knees. Some sort of alcantara fetish, I guess...
I resisted just long enough to go educate myself on what on earth ZHP was, and returned with my checkbook...

Here's the car:

http://www.erikaslist.com/pictures/330exterior.jpg

It's pretty much flawless, except for the 2800 RPM dip which, thanks to this board, I know I can erase with an ECU reflash. And the wrong shift knob, which I can fix by throwing money at it...

As for me, those are my other toys, I hope you are OK with my dual allegiances...

That is a 1968 short wheel base 912, slightly souped up and hot rodded...

http://www.erikaslist.com/pictures/68912_1.jpg

My track/special day toy, getting harder to use with the kids..

http://www.erikaslist.com/pictures/cayms.jpg

After driving the ZHP 330, I ordered a steering wheel rewrap for the Cayman S, I wish I could "ZHP" the interior as well (yes, it's a verb now), it's lacking in alcantara... Hell I'd probably date an ugly woman if she were wrapped in alcantara...(hope my wife doesn't read this)

And maybe more in tunes with the board:

http://www.erikaslist.com/pictures/bmw_7568.jpg

My rust bucket... Been patching the damn thing for almost 5 years. It's now fuel injected, Recaro'ed, no longer full of rusty holes, and got 5 speeds and better brakes. Fun car... but still a 6 footer paint wise. I'm so upside down in to I can never sell it....

Anyway, that's my hello ! I'll try not to ask stupid questions...

We're not worthy! What a garage! Feel free to donate that double car storage lift thingy to my charity, "Ryan needs a double car storage lift thingy.com".

Seriously though, great pick up with the ZHP. It fits right in with all your other badass rides.

> It's really a toss up between the Inka '02 and the 912 for me.

Good man ;-) The 2002 for "fun", the 912 for the vintage racer feel... That 912 anyway, it's really low and very original. Hang in there, I just learned my entire department is being downsized this year, so I may sell them both someday ;-) I certainly hope not, though.

Welcome to the family. Great set of cars. More details on the zhp please: Is that Mystic Blue... color interior, mileage, any mods planned?

Thanks ! Zhp details ? you really are gonna kick me out, but I have no idea what the color is... hey, I bought it less than 48h ago ;-) My son calls it "cool blue". 74000 miles, very very nice exterior/interior, save for the wrong shifter knob and the worn alcantara wheel, which is recoverable anyway.

http://www.erikaslist.com/pictures/330int.jpg

Mods planned ? Not right now, not mods per se... I'm gonna start with eradicating the 2800 dip which is ruining the driving experience for me, and then will replace the water pump, Tstat, expansion tank, the usual "I got me a new bimmer, let's take care of the cooling" deal.

I was wondering if there was a Dinan ECU flash that made sense, assuming it'd be based on the latest factory flash - hence covering my 2800 rpm dip + extra performance in one fell swoop. But from what I understand, that's not the case... Tuners only remap some areas on top of the factory flash, sooo..... right now I got nothing planned... new tires, possibly...thinking the new michelin super sports, if the porsche is any indication.

Anyway, thanks for the warm welcome.

PS: I should point out I feel my intro was a little too "show off". I'm not a rich dude, just got a taste for cars. What I did was when the market tanked, I decided I'd rather have some of my retirement in my garage instead of in a bank (insured on agreed value w/ hagerty), enjoy them, watch the classic go up in value each year, and sell them when I am too old to drive them as they should be driven. I also got a 911T being repaired... The current trend is for me to sell my modern cars and buy oldies... The Cayman is probably short lived now that the ZHP arrived - and now that my job's in the crapper - it's may not be as agile and fast as the cayman is, but it's really good enough... I never fell for a car as quickly as I did with that ZHP... Perfect balance of beauty, practicality, and balance... and it's full of alcantara....

The recommended path I believe, is to the get the DME update (either from an Indy or BMW) with the latest s/w if you have issues, then add on the performance upgrade. I have the one from Active Autowerkes and I like it. Dane (and others) swear by the Conforti Shark Injector. There are other DME upgrades out there like Dinan, etc.

your collection is pretty tight. what are the stats on the cayman track car?

as far as DME upgrades please don't think Dinan is the only one available. While they have good reason for it (have a great history) the name is actually worth more than the actual tune.

Conforti Shark is a popular one around here. Active Autowerke is another. ESS, ECS Tuning, Electrodyne, GIAC... there are tons to choose from. I work for Eurocharged Performance and I love our tunes (which is why I started working for them). My car is only about a week new to me today but it will be getting tuned in a few weeks once I pick out an exhaust system. Not swaying you in any direction per say just saying look around before thinking Dinan is the best choice.

welcome & congrats on the car.

you have no idea how tight ;-) All in a 2 car garage - I know that's not what you meant, kidding...

The cayman is not a track car per se, it's the car I take "to" the track. (old pic, ugly orange reflectors and no stripe, ugh)

http://www.erikaslist.com/pictures/%20sebring1.jpg

Out of the box, it actually sucks as a track car to be honest. It's better as a city/road car: It's the best handing car I've ever owned, bar none, but...it does not put power down as well as a 911 with the engine on the rear axle, and ultimately this is more fun to me than getting into a corner 5 mph faster. I prefer shooting out of corners, and it's not track ready out of the box (unlike a 911) which kinda pisses me off. The engine on my car (06) is basically a 911 motor turned 180 degrees, so the oil pump pickup points are not ideal anymore and it can cavitate and cause terminal problems due to oil starvation, if you run R-compound tires and are cooking on a sustained left turn... It's unfortunate, especially when a 30y old 911 will run (slower, admittedly) all day on track tires without any upgrades... I was gonna do a motorsport VOS, deeper sump, GT3 control arms, but in light of the new reality in Greg's world (will have to look for work *sometime* this year, TBD), I think I'm gonna leave it stock and focus on the oldies and the ZHP ;-) The Cayman is a great canyon carver - not many of those in central FL.... The ZHP 330 is the new "it" car, though. I love getting a new car, joining a new forum, buying new parts, and learning new maintenance tricks... that's exactly where I'm at right now.

I'm sure we can tolerate a P-man since you seem to have gotten the BMW bug early on too. I love 912s and enjoy drooling over Samba listings all the time. My wife's given me the okay for a Porsche for my 40th so I have 8 years to wait... Until then, ZHP!

>So, can you give us all the secret formula with Miracle Grow so that we may all be able to expand our garages? :D

In my case it's pretty simple. My garage backed into a useless patio that had the AC units and a junk tree. A hurricane took out the tree, and that gave me an idea ;-) We just punched thru the wall and added a wall + a flat roof, space for 1.5 car length.

http://www.erikaslist.com/pictures/outside.jpg

So between that and the existing garage, I can just about squeeze 3x 912/911 bodies bumper to bumper on that side. Add $2700 for a stacking lift delivered and installed, and the other side now sports 2 spots. That is how you turn a 2 car garage into a 5 ! And you get a bonus terrace on top of the addition, which is a great selling point for the wife...

Yeah... well, part of it is I like cars, I scored a few cheap ones, and the rest is a calculated investment... of sorts... this is not exactly full of Speedsters and Ferraris either... I scored the 69 912 for $9K years ago. The 68 was a little more but I had to have it. The 2002 was a$4500 deal and I overpaid by about $4499 as it was a rusty piece of garbage. I have put twice that into it to fix it up, not counting my time... Also bear in mind that my 4 classics cost me $600 a year to insure at full agree value which is > market value. Good deal...

The cayman was a used deal, you can get those around 30K now and I highly recommend doing so, life is short. That leaves a 72 911T which I bought thanks to a cunning strategy. I told my wife that the stock market was not doing well, our 401K was going down, while my 912s were gaining 10% a year. A 72 911 with its unique oil door was therefore a clever investment, and one happened to be for sale near me... I hate to call it an investment, because I did not buy any of these to make a buck, I bought them to enjoy and because in 5y I won't be able to buy them anymore, I think (esp the 911)... It so happens I can drive them, enjoy them, watch them go up in value, and if they get wrecked I get all my money back unlike modern car insurance.

She bought into it, and I bought the cars, but I also got screwed here and there. That particular 2002 was a mistake, the 911T bit me with a full engine rebuild, so it'll be 5 years before I'm in the money... Still, she's my IRA now, when I'm too old to drive such cars (in 30+ years?), I betcha she'll be worth a pretty penny ;-) So that's the strategy anyway....it worked on my wife, good luck with yours... Now as my job is going away this year, I may revise this and downsize the Cayman S first. Out of guilt mostly, I'm not too worried about finding work - but I'd rather finance my pilot's license and take a sabbatical to finish the 912 and 2002. I've been working for 20y straight and Corporate america has worn me out... and I suck at welding, so it's time to learn...

Greg, I've been told by the guys at Black Forest (Porsche & BMW Indy in San Diego) that a restored to original 911T could be worth over $100k depending on quality of the restoration. Since we are doing most of the work ourselves the upside could be huge. Also, I doubt the car will be sold anytime soon so more time for it to appreciate.

Steve and I are going bolt off full restoration on the '71. The engine and gearbox were pulled in 1983 by a PO who was a mechanic to deal with a slight oil leak, never put it back in. We have everything for it, we just need to get the engine tuned, body repainted, seals & shocks replaced (other minor things too), then put it all back together. IIRC he paid $7300 for it (~80,000 original miles on it). Right now I would estimate about 80% disassembled, we just need to take off the suspension, possibly a few wires still in there and it will be ready for paint.

We're actually thinking of getting a layer of Line-X sprayed on the underside and the bottom few inches of the interior to protect it from any possible rust, hopefully we can get them to sponsor the car and then use it as part of an ad campaign geared towards the restoration market. Just an idea we've been tossing around

I think that $100K is overshooting the mark substantially...Sure, if it was Ferry Porsche's personal 911T and he farted in those seats, maybe. But While some immaculate and original S models are reaching that number, a very nice T is a 30-35K car today, I can see 50 if it is museum level. The factory just redid one completely (and not totally accurate if you can believe this) and raffled it - I think that is what your shop had in mind... it' s a special case...

Mine had a small oil leak too... turned out we split the case to reseal it, so you might as well re-ring the pistons, redo the top end (a funny term on a flat engine) - valve guides and general cleanup. That's 40hrs right there... add a leaky gearbox, dead shocks and a rusty heat exchanger, and you're looking at
$10K ;-) A good paint job nowadays is also $10K. Pretty soon you are underwater ;-) That is why restoring a 912 is stupid when it costs as much as a 911 to do, yet returns less... Anyway, be careful with those estimates - you can probably make a buck, but not as much as indicated.

Line-x on the underside would be a giant no-no. If you want your money back, you put it back how it came from the factory, same body color, same wurth underside sealant... original everything ;-) That's where the money is...

Hermes

Yeah, I couldn't really believe the estimate when he said it. I would agree that $30-40k is a more likely range. I would think for that range a 911 better be either a first year model or one with racing pedigree.

I have no clue what the guy was smoking when he threw that number out, but Steve is the one that told me it so he could just be inflating the number to impress me on his great choice in project cars. I think my next project after these two will be an Alfa Romeo GTA/GTV/GTAm (one of those incarnations), they just look so damn sexy

It's ridiculous how similar our car tastes are.... I've lusted for a 1750 GTV for years, but after repairing the 2002 I burned out that budget....

Hermes
01-25-2012, 08:10 AM
Hahaha... I've always said that similar minded people always seem to congregate around each other. I seem to meet people all the time in town that I get along with, then later realize we already have mutual friends. It just always seems to work that way.

I can totally understand what you're saying about blowing your budget on the Inka, we're having issues finding correct parts for our '02 because it was such an early build date. A lot of the parts on out car are adapted from the 1602 but still slightly different. For example: the clutch on your car was introduced 3/69, ours is the early version with a spring return pressure plate vs hydraulic like on yours. Right now there will be a lot of 'just get it to run fine' work done on the car. Later on it's gonna be full Frankenstein mode... full suspension, braking, tire/wheel, etc. upgrades. Maybe if I can justify the cost in my head there will be an engine swap in the distant future. For now I'm honestly thinking f*** the current setup which is a pain to find parts for and start looking for an E21 5 speed + LSD since this is not gonna be a restore to original kind of project. This is gonna be my personal car to enjoy for years (if not decades) so I want it to have the performance that I expect out of my personal cars.

The ridiculous plan (if I can get in contact with the guy who did it and get pointers)...

My car! Mystic was my first choice when I was looking but Imola is a pretty nice alternative. That is a pretty rare combo you have there.....there are only 2 Mystic, Alcantara, 6 speed coupes listed at ZHPRegistry.

A friend of mine also used to have a 68 912. His was a dark green though, British Racing Green? Somehow I think Porsche probably had a different name for it though.:biggrin
