how do I reinstall license plate lenses

The old ones fell apart removing them. The new ones I have, I don't want to force them. Any tricks or tips.

The license plate light lenses, the part that fits it to the car( 1 metal clip on one side and a plastic tab on the other ) both were so brittle the clip fell to the ground and the plastic broke with little to no force, I didn't get a chance to see how they fit it happened so quick and haven't figured it out yet, it got dark. :(

Good info with the direction, that's key. The other part is how I assumed, that's how e30 side markers are. Is it a tight fit usually, I felt like they might break?
