I have a huge mental stigma with putting water in my engine bay.

Someone help me out here.

Thanks

I suppose you don't drive in the Rain either.

It used to worry me as well. What I do now when I clean engine bays is restrict the nozzle on the hose so it's either a lighter stream of water or a very spread out stream (like it's raining lightly) to just wet the engine then use products and brushes to actually get the dirt and grime off.

This way there's no strong streams of water to penetrate any electrics or anything like that. I've done it on countless cars, including my own with no issues thus far

A pressure wash is the best if you're at an outdoor car wash centre. I usually select the pre-soak soapy mixture first and soap everything down. When you're far away from the car it ends up misting rather then jets of fluid hitting the surfaces. After I feel the soap is all in there, I'll use the rinse selection and "mist" all the crap away from probably six feet away. Try not to aim at the underside of the hood where the sound deadening material is because if you soak that too much it causes shrinkage when it drys in a hot engine bag and it warps the material so it's not flush with the hood.

See? And then this guy is gonna say this.

LOL...I can never get a heavy mist out of my garden hose at home. A pressure washer can give your engine a tropical rainforest misting...it's like a BMW spa to the engine!

Try it sometime with your wife....stay far away from the nozzle though..you don't want to become the supermarket's skinless chicken special. You'll want to plug the pressure washer into warm water for bi-daily showers that way. :P

i hosed off my engine bay once, i got so paranoid halfway into it i aborted when i saw electrical connectors getting wet. nothing bad happened, but it still made me nervous.

Pretty much all of the electrical connections under the hood are water tight. The only thing I would worry about maybe is the alternator

DW, have you found that your Bimmer really prefers German beer instead of water for an engine bay bath - say some Warsteiner or Hoegaarden?! :D

How do you like the Dinan Intake? Considering investing with my Christmas bonus amongst other things, and how's the strut brace? I don't have uber amounts of money for a E46 Carbon Perf. one :innocent...

I've been very happy with both. I think the strut bar is one of the best looking and fictional on the market. I did like the performance carbon fiber until I saw one fractured in the middle.

The intake is also great. It does so much more than the simple close to stock appearance look tells. Although it looks simple the install takes a few hours. The tough part is drilling the hole for additional air in the brake duct. Check out the picks below for an inside look.

New & used filter. The blue is oil. Dinan does not recommend re-oiling the filters. Replacement is their recommendation.

I have never cleaned my engine bay :facepalm (it's on my list of things to do) but a handful of people I think use Simple Green (http://www.amazon.com/Simple-Green-11001-All-Purpose-Concentrate/dp/B0017D1GG6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1450976049&sr=8-1&keywords=simple+green) and dilute it down a bit. That's what I plan to use.

Links are in this DIY I did awhile back on Lens Restoration.
