View Full Version : Would be Nice to Make it Just a Few Days....

...without a fluid leaking out of my car.

Garage floor full of wiper fluid again.

Tried the hole in the reservoir cap trick a week ago. No dice.

Pulled the tank and best I can tell is that the washer pump grommet is leaking.

Strange thing is-- sitting in the garage cold or after a short drive: no leak.

After a longer drive when the engine gets nice and hot: leaks like crazy.

Ordered a replacement grommet and a pump while I was at it.

Starting to think that she's acting out because I'm not driving her enough...

Anybody have any experience with a leak like this... or any thoughts?

Have youthe checked for hairline cracks that can hardly be seen or on the bottom of the tank? I would maybe spring for a new one also and call it a day.

^^Not a bad idea, John. I was thinking of just going that route.

I had that leak too. It was the strainer/grommet at the bottom of the pump. Changed my pump and grommet and no leak.

Ok. Thanks, Oli. I ordered the pump and grommet from Autohaus.

I'll change those out first. If that doesn't do it, I'll drop the $60 on the reservoir.

+3.5

I just bought a cheap OEM part off amazon for like $15. If it goes bad it goes bad. But it stopped my leak and the pump works just fine.

Might be worth poking around the headlight washers, if you have them.

Thanks, gents.

Checked there first. Looked like the leak was coming from the back of the tank around the windshield pump.

We'll see, though.

It may also have something to do with roundel swap? You took her bling bro.

+1 for the pump (not the grommet). Had that on the E36 myself. Hope that cures it!

Yeah.....and I'm not concerned about this whole cheesy coolant bit. That's just a temper tantrum. Wait till she really gets pissed.

Yea when I got back from the mafia reunion last year with my dad's car that thing spit out all of its washer fluid. I'll find out what it was and get back to you.

Looks like the pump and grommet swap out did the trick.

Mine just started leaking today.....from the rear (looking from the front of the car) pump/grommet area. Do you typically have to replace the pump in this instance or is the grommet fine to see if that fixes it? How does it just "start" leaking? I haven't even owned the car for a day and it is already needing attention!

I replaced both. Cheap enough to bang them both out. With my luck, I would have tried to replace the grommet and had the issue be with the pump.

That might be a good sign. :-)

I had to replace mine (with a Meyle) shortly after buying my car and since then it has been VERY reliable.

Ugh, mine has been leaking for about 4 months. It only leaks if I actually use the fluid. I refill it every now and then, but after about a week or two, it's out. Right now it appears to leak from the back left side where the little black sensor/pump? is. I haven't really looked into it too much though. I'll have to pull it one day and see what's going on with it.
