K so my synchronizer is bad on 5 and on its way out in second..... I took the car down tothe dealer to have them check it out, they came back to me and said i need a new transmission and that they can send it out for a rebuild and install it for 5505 1190 for labor 4315 for the rebuild with a 2 year warrenty... My only concern is that labor price legitamite and is there anywhere i can send my transmission i can also go the cheap route and get a transmission with 80something thousand miles on it and installed for around 2000 with a one year warrenty at my mechanic.... Any thought? or can point me in the direction for a cheaper transmission rebuild that i can send out and put back in myself....

Labor is probably legitimate.

I don't think so. Their labor only involves dropping the tranny and putting the rebuilt one back in, right? If so, that's too much labor IMO.

Ug. This is why i just did what i did. I have seen numbers as low as 2500 for rebuilds though, so i would go outside of the dealer realm and get quotes at least. I mean, its a GM tranny anyway. not like its bmw specific.

Well wwdd (what would dane do) lol i honestly love the car And i want to keep it but 5500 is half of what i orginaly paid for the car a few years back

I'm sure you could. But do you want to take the risk of getting a used transmission?

Its a manual and 86k 5th is messed up cause i missed it and probably burned out the synchro

It is a lot of money no doubt. But you just need to ask yourself how long you plan on keeping the car, and if it is worth it to get a new transmission.

How do you moneyshift 5th?

Was behind some slow old person on an on ramp an gunned it to get around as we hit the highway and missed 5th was late for work

A single bad shift isn't going to trash a synchro, IMO.

I'd get a good used unit, swap it myself with a new clutch, and rock on.

Or learn to double clutch 5th.

Just out of curiosity, does it grind 5th every time? Are you sure it' shot? 80k miles is way too soon to have toasted synchros...

$4300 is crazy for a trans rebuild. You can buy a rebuilt one from Husker BMW for $3000. Part #23007532498

http://www.bmwmercedesparts.com/parts/index.cfm?searchText=23007562725&make=BMW&action=oePartSearch&siteid=215771

Personally, I would find a lower mile used one and install that.
