View Full Version : Not getting the car back from insurance :(

Well I was hoping I could get the car back from insurance for faily cheap considering the mass amount of damage done to the car. I know that some of you would have been interested in the interior, suspension pieces, etc. I was expecting no more than having to pay $1000 for the car, which I feel I could have made back over a few months of work and selling pieces such as the silver cube coupe interior, engine, trans, etc. But, they want $3,000 for the car and I just can't justify that and not sure how the salvage value is so high when not one body panel is salvageable. Sorry guys, I wanted to have a few replacement pieces for you all to buy.

Too bad. It might be negotiable (?) but that's a lot of money to make up to get to $1K.

I wonder if you can just take your tools to the salvage yard and strip the good parts before all the other folks get to it!

The car will go to auction as is at a salvage auction. My buddy has a salvage license so we may go down there and see what it goes for. If it's cheap enough, I'll buy it back.

yeah i would tell them there are some important personal belongings in the car you want to collect, and then pry out the cubes. if they give you a hard time, say that the cubes are the important personal belongings you were talking about! lol

Here's a few more pictures for you guys to check out. The center of this wheel is still attached to the hub which is sitting in the drivers floor board. Apparently that made it IN the car DURING the accident!

Should polish right out. Ordered some Dr Colorchip too!

Holy Batman, you walked out of that ? T boned by what ?

Speedracer

I definitely didn't walk out of it. I wasn't t boned. As a matter of fact, I wasn't hit by another car. I swerved to avoid a head on collision with what was likely a drunk driver at 3:30am on a very dark lit road. The road used to have a third lane that was kind of torn up, and i forgot that they recently repaved the two main lanes and made the third one gravel, so i swerved right, tried to correct and get back on the road, got sideways in the gravel, hit a curb and went airborn into a 6ft retaining wall that caused me to end up in a barrel roll. I was knocked unconscious for about 7-8hrs, broken leg, broken ribs, etc

I don't see how the silver cube trim would be in any kind of decent shape. Same goes for the seats and pretty much anything else in there. The doors are caved in. Enough said.

Damn my friend. Glad you came out ok. Like the other guys said....the silver cubes are pretty desireable. Not sure how much of that interior is any good anyhow. Looks to be quite a bit of collateral damage.

Wow, incredible. You know, doesn't look like the cube survived, but you could also take it out and replace it with something cheap.

yeah after seeing more pics, i'm just glad you are alive, condition of the cubes notwithstanding...

Thanks guys. I'm going to go out tomorrow and get a good look at it for the first time myself. I'll know then if the cubes happened to survive at all, and if anything else is any good inside. I saw some engine bay pics and things look ok there. Again, I definitely won't overpay for the car, but if some good stuff can be salvaged, I know I could sell the engine/trans locally for a swap.

I bet you can get it back for a steal, and make some good money. I would say pay no more than $1500.00 though.

Dane, I'm not sure I'll go more than $750 for it honestly. I had just started a new job 3 weeks prior to the wreck, so unfortunately, no short term disability. And being a "single car" accident, going to be hard to get any money for lost wages. So, living off savings doesn't exactly afford me the chance to spend $1500 to hopefully get it back in 6 months. Worst part it, I was laid off from my previous job so had to live off savings for 3 months before I landed this last job...needless to say savings is loooowwwww.

Speedracer...very sorry to hear about the car, but main thing is you are okay. The car took the beating for you and saved your life. I think from the pics it looks like a 2005 coupe. If so, did you have the alcantara steering wheel or was yours leather perforated? If it is indeed leather perforated...is it still in good shape (except for the airbag?) I am looking to replace my alcantara wheel with a ZHP leather perforated one.

OK....do what you gotta do. You're in "survival mode" right now. Understand.

I'm not sure of the condition, but it is not leather, it is a newer alcantara wheel. Sorry, and thanks for the good wishes.

We're just glad you're still with us. If you're able to get the car for a price that you can make up quickly, awesome. If not, oh well. Keep moving forward and getting better. Our thoughts are with you.

Finally got to go look at the car today and see if I had anymore personal belongings in there. I've got to say...seeing the car in person was a scary scary sight. I can't believe I survived that. The passenger seat was folded in half from side to side and the console and big part of the dash was pushed into the drivers seat. The interior is trashed...both of the door's silver cube trim was ok, but the dash split in about 4 places and broke the silver cube in every one of them. So, I don't think I'm going to bother trying to get the car back from them. The engine/trans might be the only thing that's worth getting back but I'm not even 100% sure that's good. On the plus side...I found my cell phone and I needed some numbers out of it. It was in the windshield (what was left of it) barely hanging out over the passenger side a pillar! Haha...it was crazy. Not a crack on the phone and it still worked! Also found my $250 sunglasses I had recently bought, and not a scratch on them! So I'd say that was a pretty good score!

Update on me. I got my staples removed yesterday and had more x rays taken. Here is a fun picture of my leg now

I've got another follow up in 5 weeks to see if I can put weight on it by then. Everything else is looking ok. Ribs are getting better, just takes time. No more problems with my head, so, just slow and steady recovery.

Wow. Glad you are mending and you got to recover some items. Too bad about the pieces parts on the car, but as everyone has said, that's secondary. Keep us posted.

Man, the view from that angle is horrifying.

I'm surprised the roof isn't caved in more, considering you went into a barrel roll.

They cut the pillars on the drivers side and used the expanders to lift the roof up so they could get me out. I'm told it was pretty well smashed, especially on the passenger side.

Seeing a BMW like this breaks my heart. But your health is more important than a material possession. Glad you made it out alive.

Speed, i just went 6 weeks without being able to bear weight on my leg (plus my arm was broke too so i couldn't use that either)...i know how it feels. just take it one day at a time (cliche i know, but it's true) and focus on the little things that make you happy. for me, this forum was one of those things :)

Impressive. Both how the car protected you and how you are keeping a positive attitude.

I was in a nasty accident where the pickup I was a passenger in rolled 3-5 times down the freeway. No fun.
We were fortunate enough to walk away from it. In your case, I would consider myself very fortunate just to be
able to look at that hunk of metal and say............................

Best of luck, but it seems you have a great supply of it already!!
