Wondering if our ZHPs come with the 'Beep' chime when we lock or unlock our vehicles. My E39 came with it. Any ideas? Thanks.

I think the key has to be programmed for it. Mine doesn't do the beep, but I think you can get it programmed at the dealer

+1 for this answer. I don't always know if it locks, and I have to turn around and see if the corner lights blink... Of course, they only blink once if it does lock. Would be nice to know if it has the beep like the newer BMWs...

Mine does it.....once for lock and twice for unlock. Kind of a beep but it's not the cars horn like some vehicles. I also have the factory alarm, don't know if that makes a difference or not.

It has to be part of the security system.

Do you have the factory alarm JP? I wonder what actually makes the chirp? Is it something separate from the siren or is it a sound the siren can make?

an additional siren that comes with the factory alarm system is what makes the chirps.

ryankokesh
07-07-2012, 03:27 PM
The alarm itself makes the chirp, if I recall correctly. If your car is programmed to blink, it's pretty easy to get a piezo at your local radio shack and wire it up to chirp even without the alarm package. Check my sig, there might be a link to the DIY. (I'm on my phone and I don't remember of I linked it or not....)

You have to have the factory alarm, there is a way to wire in a small siren that sounds similar but it still has to be programmed to tell the car to send the power to that wire.

Wouldn't the wires come off from the connector after sticking it in? What is holding the wires in place when stuck inside the female connector? What size wire gauge will fit on that plug?

I used electrical tape to secure everything in place. The wires that came with the buzzer I purchased were a good size for insertion.

Yup, someone can code it "on" for you. I'm know there are others here that have a compy set up for it, but off the top of my head I can only think of BP and myself. Obviously you'd want someone in Florida though, lol.

I just got done with the install of the chirp buzzer from Radio Shack. I got the 102db. I sort of did something different on this install. I do not know if some of you did the same. But I removed the access panel divider into the fan housing. Two torx screws and a twist lock. That was where is I installed the buzzer after I cleaned and blow down the inside of the cavity so the double back tape would adhere better. I also stripped back 1/8" more from the exposed end of the leads. The wires would go deeper inside the connector. Still loud enough even though the buzzer is enclosed inside away from the dirt and engine heat. I was moving so fast that I was not able to take any photos......

Hmm, interesting. Can you give more info on the coding? How to tell if I have factory alarm or the clown nose just blinks for the hell of it?? I'm a little confused now.

This all being said... I have an idea. Someone needs to develop a website that has a database of all cars ever sold. When the car is sold new, the original window sticker gets scanned in and stored by VIN. This way when you buy an 8 year old used car, you can refer back to see every last detail on the car. :biggrin

ryankokesh
07-10-2012, 07:19 PM
See that little dome thing in the middle of the roof, kinda above your head? Squeeze the sides and pull it down. If there's something in there you have an alarm, but if you just see a wire hanging out there's no alarm.

Awesome website idea... if you could get good buy-in it'd be incredibly useful!

ryankokesh

Or I bet you could just lock the doors with the windows down and open it from the inside... shouldn't that make the alarm go off?

I was under the impression that the clown nose and light blinking are mere deterrents, and that you need the actual alarm system installed in order to hear the beep.

Not what you're looking for, but my locks lock with a very distinctive thump, plus the lights flash. I can definitely tell when the car locks/unlocks. No chime necessary for me. Wondering if yours aren't that loud or you just want more confirmation?

Washburn

I also think the car locks with a pretty good thump, BUT it's possible that the OP is looking for something for those situations where you've walked some distance from the car and are not sure if you locked or not? the 'thunk' may not be loud enough for that situation...
on the other hand, the turn signals flashing can be seen from pretty far....

There are a few of the kits for sale right now over on e46f, they go for around 175$, includes the siren and mount, over head motion sensor, and tilt sensor and one bolt and washer for the tilt sensor. Other then that the install is easy and around an hour. Worst part is you have to get it activated at the dealer, or by someone who can code these cars!

A lot of times when I get home and park the car in the garage and temps are high like they have been lately I will open the hood to let the heat escape easier. I've noticed that when I lock the doors with the hood open I don't get the beep. Later on when I do close the hood (doors locked, alarm armed) then it will do the single beep.

Anything changed recently with your underhood switch? Not making contact for some reason?

It's funny you say that. Lately it's been so hot here when I pull in the garage I open the hood and set a floor fan in front of the car to help cool it down. We have had 115 degree days last week which is brutal. Also I took the car to the car wash yesterday and apparently I got the hood sensor wet. Glad you mentioned that. Messed with it and got it working again! Awesome...

Great! At least it was an easy fix. I think if we got temps like that I would be breaking out the fan too! Hot one here today though.....102 right now and 98 in Vegas. Glad the ZHP is home sleeping in the garage.

I have to think it helps to let the heat out like that. Easier on vacuum lines, cooling and intake hoses, even the paint on the hood. I saw an 04 330Xi in a local car lot the other day and the clear coat is peeling off the center of the hood.

I bought a set of intake hoses when I bought my car after reading all the forums about leaks in them. They're still sitting in a bag at home almost 3 years later.

Bumping this because this issue is now intermittent again. I had William code my car to Beep when armed and disarmed. It always beeps during disarming but occasionally when disarming. It's hot here again so I'm back to opening the hood after pulling into the garage as stated above. I noticed when I arm the alarm with the hood open it ALWAYS beeps now. Ok I just spent some time out at the car.

1) I unchecked "Arming, doors closed- acoustic", coded the car, and tested it...and I got the chime on lock! So thanks for suggesting that, Trans! I hope it "sticks” and does not become intermittent again. Thinking out loud here, unchecking this box means the car is not checking the doors before giving out the arming beep, right? Could that mean the car was not beeping because one of the doors isn’t arming when we are locking for whatever reason? I plan on testing all four of the doors like you did when I have a chance to take it to a big lot where I won't bother anyone.

2) This scan marks the SECOND time in a row that when I checked my alarm settings, the "DWE interior sensor" box was unchecked. I know for a fact that I checked it again and again, and for some reason it is coming up unchecked when I scan (scans are about 6 months apart). I checked the box again and coded it in when making the 1) adjustment. Has anyone else come across this? I can test this too when I find a big lot.

Here is what it looks like when I disconnected:
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/07/28/ygy8u9up.jpg

3) not really alarm related but thought this was funny. The nav had 2 errors but couldn't tell me what they were. Hah.

Just a quick update. I just happened to press my lock button on my key with my passenger door open and the car still chirped so it is definitely not checking the doors when arming the car. I guess that means one of my doors is not arming correctly previously since I didn't get the chirp before. Strange because no door fault codes seemed to come up in PA Soft since installing the alarm. I want/need to figure out how to troubleshoot the doors to find out what is causing the problem. Does another program monitor the alarm system better than PA Soft? Like INPA or something?

I usually point the key fob at my crotch. works great.
