View Full Version : Another ZHP bites the dust..................

Well, I was minding my own business and driving home from work today when I was rear ended by a teen age girl in a Mercedes Benz SUV. I slowed down for turning traffic and I had that "oh, no - she is not stopping" feeling followed by the "damn - my poor ZHP...." then the impact. I tried to get out of the way but was hemmed in by the rush hour traffic - that is how it got hit on the corner.

We will see if it can be fixed but I have a sinking feeling that the insurance company will total a 7+ year old car.

My back hurts but I am ok. Teenage girl was ok too - her main concern was the classic my parents will kill me!

Damn. Looks just like my usta TiAg.

How fast do you think she was going?

I estimate $5000 in damage.

No total.

I do not expect frame rail damage, unless she was doing 40+ mph.

Hate these threads :(

Get checked out either way. Rear end collisions are no joke to the spine. One day you're fine, next day you can't get out of bed.

Best of luck with the repairs.

Sorry ranger. :sadface

I'm seeing total because quarter panels are one of the hardest parts to be fixed. Also I'm sure it has changed the door jam geometry. That being said I would look into buying another e46 and using this as your parts car, I've done similar with other cars and in the end all of the spare parts you can use or sell more than make up the difference.

Yes - I think you are right about repairs. She has 123000+ miles too. I am afraid she is doomed.

Sorry to hear ranger. Of course, my favorite color too. I will say this, there is a convertible AW ZHP on my local Craigslist, half your miles too. Also, there is another vert on autotrader, and a sedan on there as well. All AW ZHP cars.

Most importantly, get checked out. Cars are cheap compared to recurring injuries. Good luck bud.

Update - filed claim with my insurance USAA and the person who hit me Progressive last night. Impressed with both. Progressive called me at at 0930 and by the time I was off the phone had a tow truck headed this way (bumper rubbing on tire so cannot drive far), appointment at body shop, and a rental car reserved. Tow truck here by 1030 and car headed to body shop. Enterprise called asking when I wanted rental car (they are nearby so I will pick up) and body shop already called to confirm receipt of ZHP. Oh, and I am a little sore but no worries.......no worse than a rough parachute landing!

Rental car is a brand new, no miles, fully loaded 2012 Ford Taurus Limited......pretty nice! It is huge - makes my wife's 2007 MB E350 look small!

I'm really sorry to hear, I hope you are okay and have a speedy back recovery.

Hate to say it, but I reckon the car is totaled, probably 8k in damage if you use the Bmw dealer to repair it. (IMO, use the bmw dealer to fix the car if it is repairable. They know their stuff, they will use oem paint, and definitely oem parts)

Well, Progressive called and said they will not repair the ZHP and that is totalled. Now we are negotiating the money they will pay me for my loss. They sent me an offer that I refused - they are comparing my 2005 BMW 330Ci 6MT ZHP with Performance and Premium Packages with 325s for comparables.

There was another thread on dealing with insurance, so you may want to look that up if you'd like tips, but it sounds like you know the drill. Find the best comps, show pics, don't accept a lowball offer, make them escalate to a manager if you can't get resolution with the first one. BTW, they do throw tax in there too, so eventually you'll get close to your # with the tax added in, but it's still officially a low estimate value for your car... but if you get the money you want, that's what counts.

This thread makes me sick to my stomach. Even what looks like minor damage is almost always deemed a total loss by insurance. Sucks for you man, I hope you get the $$ you need and the replacement vehicle that makes you happy.

Go to the doc.. even if it's nothing big, real issues don't show up right away. If the hit was hard enough to total don't take a chance on your back.. and hope it's nothing.. just a little soreness..

Mine was hit like that, it was sandwiched as it was the car in the middle at a stop light, Allstate fixed it after I told the adjuster I can pull it and fix it.
Mine was swayed 3/4" to the right on the rear from a 45mph impact. Brought it to my friends shop and we pulled it straight like factory. On these cars when the spare is taken out more damage occurs. The spare acts like a third bumper shock.

Total repair cost of mine was $6,786.

I am surprised they are totaling it.

If you can then sometimes yes but if he can't do the work sometimes it is not worth buying back to fix, plus it will have a salvage title until fixed when it will have a rebuilt title. At that point the car becomes a keeper.

Now if they want $2500 for a buy back, you can make that on engine and engine parts alone.

Damn this sucks Ranger! Are you going to part it out at all or just let the insurance company deal with it?

Whitexi

There either stupid or being ignorant to compare it to a regular 325. I'd send them links of actual zhp's. A lot....as many as you can find.

If you don't do all the homework for them they will just try and settle it on there beliefs.

When my integra was hit the first thing I did was go to my bank and they ran an appraisal based on there car/ loan data base and it was much more than I thought. They gave me a print out and then I added up the aftermarket items with recites that got damaged from the Accident.

When the adjuster arrived I handed him all my calculations. He seemed surprised and agreed, then stated this helps a great deal when justifying cost to value.

And one week later I had a check for my loss as I seemed suitable.

Hope that helps any, still sucks they totaled it.

I also agree to go see your doc. I had a patient whose 1993 850ci manual was T Boned last week and he didn't go to the ER to get checked out. I told him to come in so I could assess his injuries. He had several not so insignificant problems which I documented and it will make an impact on his claim. Insurance wanted to give him 14k total. Seriously? They only made 38 manual 850s in 1993. I told him to turn it down and not even think about less than 25K.

Well, I found a replacement car. Drove it this afternoon and shook hands on a deal. Will pay for it and pick it up on Saturday. It is a 2006 Mercedes Benz C55 AMG. Found it looking for M3s.

http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/searchresults.xhtml?zip=30114&endYear=2013&modelCode1=C55AMG&startYear=1981&makeCode1=MB&numRecords=25&searchRadius=25&showcaseOwnerId=100018838&Log=0

All is not lost on the ZHP front - I am still negotiating payoff on the ZHP and the salvage rights.

I went through this same rigamarole with mine, except at fault. USAA totally reamed me with the value of the car, doing the same thing - 2001 325s as comps with "added value" for my "options package." I prepared the 17 ZHP 6spd sedans on autotrader at the time showing them a 50% higher value than their offer. They came up a few hundred for the sat radio and xenon lights they left off the appraisal. I negotiated and fought til I was blue in the face and still lost thousands.

The ZHP is a tricky beast in this way - it is a very nice version of a car that ultimately isn't that valuable anymore. As I mentioned in my thread back then, BMW would've done us a huge favor by giving it a separate model designator because we're all at non-trivial value risk - unless you're carrying a declared value/classic plan.

In the end of the day I'm happy this is all you're dealing with. Enjoy the merc - I'll keep my eyes peeled for it down at Shane's. Don't let it ruin you on the better German marque ;)

I refused the first offer from Progressive. Talked about back pain, uniqueness of ZHP, do I really need to get a lawyer, etc. - they got an "independent appraisal" that was about right so I have accepted the increased second offer. I also sent them a scan of the original window sticker and I think that helped a lot to differentiate from the 325s, etc.
