A few more pics taken while I was polishing my carbon fiber panels on my CSL door cards....I can't get over just how mirror-like these panels are after a good polishing!

Just a few teaser shots until I get these mounted permanently in the ///M. I have to go to home depot to get a few screws/nuts so I can secure mounts to the door for these panels. :thumbsup

After reading that article from jalop comparing gear heads to washing machines heads I can't help but laugh at your mirror finish. Absolutely stunning but everyone else in the world will think you're insane :)

I laugh at myself because I was just cleaning my car at a gas station and double checking all the other enthusiasts wouldn't think my ride was dirty lol. The regular gas people just looked at me funny.

Sean, I can see that. My neighbors think I'm insane but I don't care... I look at my car and know I have one clean and awesome ///M. In the end that's what matters to me. I find it funny when people look at my ///M when I'm just cruising around. When I go to Larz Anderson in June (German Car Day) I'm sure there will be lots of people staring at the inside of my ///M. Should be interesting :thumbsup ;)

It will be once I have the ///M's interior fully stripped out. I will be taking my time because I have never attempted taking everything out of the interior. I don't want to mess anything up. The plan is to begin taking out the seats, then my center console, and then rear deck, speakers, carpeting and trim, dash, and then door cards. Throughout the entire process, I will be using my Nikon to take detailed pics. I will also be using lots of plastic zip-loc bags for various screws and nuts that will be coming out. So I plan to be very thorough when doing my full OEM interior swap.

Perhaps this would be a good opportunity to make a DIY out of this....;) I suppose this will make for an awesome winter project :) In the end, the ///M will look fantastic. :thumbsup Should not disappoint here...:big grin

Oh, I forgot to mention the side impact air bags will also be deleted due to the new door cards... so a lot going on here...

Are they possible to find anymore? OEM one?

I think earlier this year BMW Germany had 80 OEM CSL carbon fiber roofs in their supply system but they're nearly impossible to source.

Challenge produced all of the 1M carbon fiber roofs and I was told they also produce the current gen ///M5 & ///M6 carbon fiber roof panels so I figure you can't go wrong with getting their carbon fiber roof panels.

Right now I have an opportunity to get the roof panel. I'm getting it but my priority will be getting my Recaro Sportster CS seats. Once air have the roof panel, I can take my time and get everything else. I just want to have the seats first.....

Stuart, you reroute the door mirror wiring so that it is run up thru the center console where the mirror switch is actually relocated. Since I will be taking out my entire interior in favor of reinstalling an all black interior, this is the time when I will be rerouting the door mirror control wiring. I know I have lots of work ahead of me but it's going into winter and my ///M is hibernating on the most part. Once the OEM CSL bootlid is installed, the ///M will be in full hibernation and that's when the "restoration" will commence... Just so you will have an idea where the mirror switch will be relocated, the pic below is from a CSL...you can see the mirror switch mounted on the CSL center console. Mine will be in the same position when complete...

At least modern sunroofs don't weigh that much. Sunroof vs slicktop on a 2002 is over 300lbs of difference

---

Charlie, I have noticed when cleaning my carpets that the area which will need the most cleaning is the flat to vertical turns at the trans tunnel/doors. Basically where the edge of the floormats sit and hold dirt in

Yeah......me too. I'm finding that the ///M is a constant project....I will eventually get to where I'm going....

Sunroofs are nice but with my ///M I haven't been using my sunroof at all. I actually prefer keeping my sunroof closed. Also by taking out the sunroof I'm shaving close to 100lbs off the top lowering my center of gravity. A bonus for the ///M.

Also I will be adding a real carbon fiber roof which, in my opinion, will look sick :thumbsup

Follow what used to be BMW's mantra: Form follows function. Since the moonroof is essentially useless (completely a novelty item), it's better to shave the weight. Plus it looks better. :thumbsup

I completed my second pass on the rear carpet section last night and got some more dirt out but on the most part it was much cleaner than what I had when I started so I grabbed the front section and started on that. I was surprised to see that the front section I had was actually cleaner than the rear section. There was not as much noticeable dirt as I sucked the cleaner off the carpet but when I looked at the bottle, it was just as dirty as what I saw last night.

I will be going over the carpeting again tonight. 3rd and final pass on the rear section and second pass on the front. It's a lot of work but in the end I will be glad I did this prior to installing it in my ///M :thumbsup

When the install part starts, I plan to take a lot of pics showing progress on the retrofit....

Progress is going to be slow, but deliberate, as I begin dismantling and take pictures of everything inside... looks like the ZHP will be outside once again while I'm doing all of this. Going to use the 2nd garage as a staging area for my ///M's interior. I plan to take lots of pictures along the way detailing the entire interior swap/CSL parts install process...;)

While updating my ZHP project thread, I realized that when I mentioned that the ///M was in full hibernation mode, the ///M is in fact sort of in a shell awaiting it's transformation as I get ready to completely change out it's grey interior for an all black interior with OEM CSL door cards. The CSL rep bootlid will be replaced in favor of an OEM CSL bootlid and the car will be sorted out for the next season until I have more $$$$$ saved up to get the Recaro Sportster CS seats.....

I will echo....right now just getting prep work done in my garage... goal is to have the garage with my ///M completely cleaned out and empty so that I can use my ZHP's garage as a staging area for all the interior parts I'll be taking out of the ///M....

I have reviewed some of the existing DIY's that are out there and this does not seem too hard...with that said, I plan to write up a very detailed DIY including warning and cautions along with pics so in the future people will be able to access this thru this forum and do this for themselves. It will be a time consuming process since I will also be taking lots of notes and pictures as we progress thru this DIY.

That's the plan my friend! I will be using my Nikon for pics throughout the process.....it will take some time to write up the DIY for dash/interior retrofit as I don't want to leave anything out.....tools list, etc....

I processed a few pics from today's project...just thought I would share with everyone....it was hard work but having another person there to help really made the difference since items I have removed/replaced would have been difficult to do by myself due to the size. Glad BP was there to give a hand :thumbsup

This was at the beginning where BP and I removed the A-pillar cover before removing the dash...
http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/pp37/macdctr/M3/ScreenShot2013-12-28at91625PM_zps96a526ba.png

To facilitate removing the dash easier, it is best to remove the steering wheel, clock ring, and turn signal stalks.....there are 4 screws to keep track of so when you install them you won't be busy looking for them...;)
http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/pp37/macdctr/M3/ScreenShot2013-12-28at91536PM_zpscc54ada0.png

BP and I finally removed the dash and I got a little excited when I first saw this....hence the fuzziness in the pic but you guys/gals get the picture ;)

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/pp37/macdctr/M3/ScreenShot2013-12-28at91717PM_zps0474cc88.png

Old carpets were finally taken out....gonna get rid of the grey finally! :)

While vacuuming out the exposed decking I did manage to find a dime....I was amazed by how much Styrofoam was used...

Black carpeting was then placed where the grey used to be.....much happier now :biggrin

Well, that's it for now. I have more work to do and plan to get more progress tomorrow after getting a good night's rest. I was amazed by just how much I remembered when I took everything apart. The key folks is to take your time, have a plan on how you're going about things, and have plenty of zip lock bags for all the screws you're gonna take out....That's it. Overall I would say this project has been easy although I have done this once before while helping a good friend tear apart his ///M when he dyed his grey interior Imola Red. Helping him laid the ground work for my project I started today :)

Also started installing my OEM CSL door cards....they look perfect in my ///M :)

I was very surprised by how quickly this project almost got completed. We could have easily finished this project today but towards the end we decided that it's best not to stress our bodies too much by trying to finish. In theory, this project could be finished all in a day's work before the sun goes down even with this blasted early sunset.

All that's left now is the HVAC setup, center console/shifter area, seats, and A pillars, as well as figuring out how to make the door cards mount properly using the brackets without interfering with the mirror memory modules.

I'm very impressed with how much information on the swap Charlie retained in his memory; we did all of this without looking up a single thing on the interwebz. Good job Charrie. :)

Pretty fun, right, guys?! Now do it 3 times. :rofl

I hope this goes to show just how easy dash removal is. Nothing hard at all. I did find the fitment of cut carpets after installation to be subpar around the center console, along the side of the HVAC and core. Being cut, it doesn't "lean in" as much as it would were the carpet installed as a whole; as such, I can actually see a portion of the cut exposed from under my dash. Having that has led to less than perfect fitment of the carpet around the dead pedal, as well as the alignment of the pins that hold the sill to the door.

Just some things I noticed when I did this job, that, hopefully, you guys can notice or remedy when you begin to assemble everything fully. Take your time and make sure that fitment is perfect, because slight inconsistencies will add up.

I now have the fun part of having to get 4 long wires to splice onto the existing mirror control wiring so that I can run them thru the door into the cabin to route to my center console. I would have to say this is probably the hardest part of this whole entire retrofit. Luckily, I have excellent soldering skills :thumbsup

Here's a few pics of what I'm talking about...
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/30/2epyqysa.jpg
The mirror switch is connected to this module thru the 4 blue-green wires...the group going up from the module.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/30/deju4yje.jpg
You can see me holding the mirror switch connector in this pic..

While I was there taking these pics I decided to plug in the environment module so most of my dash console is put back together :)
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/30/zudypyza.jpg

Side impact air bag is removed since the OEM CSL door cards are carbon fiber. CSLs don't come with side impact air bags because of this....a small tradeoff to have something rare and unique :thumbsup

Yes, it was very easy. Even Botond was surprised at how easy it was for me to reinsert them :) At this point, there's nothing inside I'm not afraid of taking apart anymore in my ///M or ZHP...;) If anything, with my ZHP I can always call Dario for additional tech support since Dario has completely rebuilt at least two ZHP's :biggrin

I don't think I'd be able to do that dremel work myself.

It takes nerves of steel to do this Bill. What helped was the excessive use of masking tape around the boundary so that I wouldn't gouge the carbon fiber surface. I did skip once and only got the outer layers of the tape. Yeah, you have to have plenty of patience but the rewards are huge!

Taking things slowly since my ///M is now in storage...I got a lot of time to do things right. Right now as I have stated, I have to splice additional wiring so that I can route the wiring over to the center console. Tomorrow I will be going to the dealer to purchase the proper wiring and then will be doing this during the week...:) Hopefully by the weekend I will have all of this done since I'm planning to mount my OEM CSL bootlid on Saturday when I pick it up from the body shop.

The Scorza CSL bootlid will be packed up and stored for when I either purchase my 2nd ///M or if I end up selling it locally. Not willing to ship due to the potential of the bootlid getting damaged while in shipment....anyway....enough on status...:)

Finished my new mirror wiring harness today. For those who will do this (using Status Gruppe's carbon fiber door inserts), you got to measure 4 separate wires to 107" in length. This will be of sufficient length to splice into the existing wiring extending the range to allow you to reposition the mirror switch over to the CSL center console :thumbsup

The grey interior the ///M came with is now gone with exception of the rear deck, which will be taken care of very soon....door cards have been replaced with a more rare CSL door cards and I'm about to change out my Scorza CSL bootlid for an OEM CSL bootlid. So many changes occuring for my ///M. Soon I will be upgrading the brakes to ZCP brakes as an interm until I get the necessary funds lined up again for the StopTech Trophy series BBKs I continue to :drool over... I'm also looking to get a set of black leather heated carbon backshell Recaro Sportster CS seats in time for my birthday to install in the ///M this year.....so yeah, I have lots planned and it should be fun :)

I'm not sure exactly how to say this but if I'm not modding either the ///M or my ZHP then I'm not happy.....I have an "addiction issue" I think ;)

So much I still want to do but this will have to be for the time being ;)

Guys.....a "true" enthusiast doesn't let a little cold weather like this interfere on their modding! I'll be back working on the ///M again tonight :thumbsup

The temp dropped almost 40 degrees from Monday. We're in the single digits now....Chicago style winter!!! Yeah baby!!! Brings back lots of memories when I grew up in the Chicago area...:) Best part is that both my garages are heated by an apartment directly above them so temp in the garage stays decent to allow modding ;)

Yeah, it was great catching up with you last night my friend! It's been a long time!!! This morning I finilazed my order for the Tekarbon 1x1 carbon fiber engine cover and ordered it :thumbsup :) As much as I love the OE engine cover that's currently sitting on my S54, I am looking for a change in the engine bay and decided incorporating the new engine cover will "blend" perfectly with the Performance carbon fiber strut brace already sitting there....;) I think this will complete the look I'm going for in the engine bay for the upcoming 2014 season :biggrin

Today I scored a full ZCP brake upgrade for the ///M which will serve me until I'm ready to start the process of boosting in a few years. This brake upgrade is an "interm process" to allow me to focus on other areas while still refreshing my OE brake system :thumbsup

This kit will include rebuilt front/rear calipers, mounting brackets, fresh pads, cross drilled Performance ZCP rotors, and ss brake lines.......all for $500 :)

I was able to score this from a good friend....my ///M3 parts source ;)

Nice one Charlie. I was under impression that ///M brakes were superior to any other e46 package. How is ZCP version better?

Breakdown!!! ZCP also has semi-floating rotors like the BMW performance rotors for front and rear. The rear caliper pistons I believe is slightly larger than the stock M3 one but not by much. :)

Front:
330i: 325x25mm Rotors
M3: 325x28mm Rotors
ZCP: 345x28mm Rotors (Floating)

Rear:
330i: 320x22mm Rotors
M3: 328x20mm Rotors
ZCP: 328x20mm Rotors (Floating)

Swapping the front would require the whole spindle change..and the rear would involve a hub swap/ebrakes. Kalim done the front and rear swap.. :drool

^This...

It's possible but required a lot of work. You essentially need the entire M3 front suspension including control arms, I've looked into it before. For a ZHP it's not really worth it if you're only upgrading your brakes. Kalim did a little more than that ;)

derbo
01-10-2014, 09:04 AM
Kalim gave me a list of all the require pieces. I would have to dig it up again. Only real reason to do so is to have more bbk options. The shocks can be non-m if I recall but you would need camber plates or M3 hats.

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/pp37/macdctr/M3/ScreenShot2014-01-12at31043PM_zpsa0a30829.png

Well, that's it for today. Got most done and the seats properly reconnected. I have to get some hardware to permanently mount my CSL door panels on both the driver's and passenger's door and then the interior renovation will be complete. The cold weather did not help and I took my time to ensure everything was done properly. I have a sense of accomplishment in doing this project because I have never attempted doing something as extensive as swapping out my entire interior...it has been a very fulfilling project for me :thumbsup

Thanks BP for coming up to lend a hand....even though you feel you didn't do much today, you were of big help for me. I appreciate the pics you helped take and all the little things you have done during my restoration project! :thumbsup

I'm glad I could help in some way. I am stunned by how NEW your interior looks, even on the parts that you haven't yet replaced. With the exception of the front seats, you could sit this car in a dealership and the interior will be the same condition as all of the cars in the showroom, if not, BETTER.

It's impossible to fathom how this car could have almost as many miles as mine has and look this new.

And folks, these CSL door panels... my goodness. The amount of pure secks is unmeasureable.

Right now there's a few things left to do before the 2014 season starts...

- Illuminated ///M Door sills

- swap out my Scorza CSL bootlid for my new OEM CSL bootlid
- change out my OE brake system for the ZCP upgrade including rotors...
- swap out my parcel shelf for a black one....
- reposition my rear side speakers over to my rear parcel shelf
- get new ///M floor mats

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/pp37/macdctr/M3/ScreenShot2014-01-18at41943PM_zpse807b01e.png
What was amazing is that the Scorza CSL rep bootlid happens to be much lighter than the OEM CSL bootlid I replaced it with...

In order to thread the wiring harness to the bootlid, I had to take off these plugs since the channels inside the bootlid was much tighter...
http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/pp37/macdctr/M3/ScreenShot2014-01-18at41959PM_zpse1a2561e.png

Once this was done, routing the wiring harness was very easy with help of a wire hanger to help snake the harness thru...

Thanks Bruce. This "winter project" has taken a lot of my time to ensure I complete it just right. There were several times where I had to backtrack because something wasn't done exactly the way I wanted it so rather than putting up with less than perfect work, I just redid that part to get the right finish. I still have the rear parcel shelf to do and am waiting on parts from Germany to arrive next week. Also, with the OEM CSL bootlid weighing more than my Scorza CSL REP bootlid, I had to order a new trunk shock so that will be arriving with the rest of my parts on Wednesday. It never ends... I can never leave good enough alone regarding my two BMWs.....:facepalm

Thanks everyone! I started up my ///M for the first time in a month now and was greeted to this...

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/pp37/macdctr/M3/ScreenShot2014-01-19at80247PM_zpsf65e874a.png

No fault lights or issues whatsoever! I'm amazed I was able to take everything inside apart w/o use of any DIYs or Bently manual then put it all back together!

Now that the ugly grey interior is gone, I feel like I got a new ///M. I'm loving the new look. Even the relocated door mirror switch worked w/o any issues. It was a lot of painstaking work but like I said.....well worth the "extra" effort required to make it all happen :biggrin

I still have some work to do before my ///M is ready for the 2014 season but I'm well on my way to make this happen ;) Thanks again to everyone for all the positive comments and suggestions! :thumbsup

Pictures don't do justice to these CSL door cards....they are that awesome!

The OEM CSL bootlid installed...I was over at my friend's this afternoon getting all the final adjustments to have this bootlid aligned perfectly. Man was this a royal PITA to do...glad I won't be doing this again!

Tonight I decided that I will be adding the latest brand new Intravee II and Alpine KCA-420i (still in original box and plastic cover) iPod adapter and a long AI net cable to my ///M's stereo system. :) Then I can add an Alpine PXA-H100 sound processor. I have learned today that with the Alpine PXA-H100 connected, the intravee tricks the OE nav into thinking an OEM DSP sound processor is connected allowing for full control through the factory MKIV UI. This is something lacking in my ///M at present which hopefully will be rectified...:)

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/pp37/macdctr/Library2/ScreenShot2014-01-23at124338AM_zpse0c5f614.png

Once I add the sound processor above and have all the necessary connections set up, I should have a display on my nav screen like this:

There's plenty of time to get this done....right now I'm researching into doing this but know it can be done since Ian (Obioban) has already done this to his ///M. :)

As a very few here know....there will be more to come regarding my ///M project...;)

Today I hit a snag thanks to our wonderful US Postal service! I ordered a carbon fiber engine cover from Tekarbon and their product arrived yesterday but I was not home to take delivery of this item so I had to go to the post office to pick it up today after work. To my surprise I found the shipped box opened and it was apparent that whoever did the packaging did a very poor job prepping the package for shipment because the box was not adequately taped for shipment. Upon closer inspection of the anticipated product there were numerous cracks on the carbon fiber. It was very disappointing to see since you could easily see the quality of this fine product.

I sent an email to Tekarbon and am waiting to see if this company will stand behind their product and provide good customer service. Here's hoping they will step up and do the right thing! I don't know....but are shipping companies doing a lousy job shipping products?!?!?!? This is the third time I had to deal with damaged goods being shipped out...it's more like a crap shoot whether or not your purchased item will arrived undamaged....:facepalm

Guess the carbon fiber fairies will have to work double-time to get this right!

Wow. I would be livid. What's the next step?

Inside I want to scream but in reality you have to have a cool head and exercise lots of control if you want to work thing out during times like this....believe me after seeing the rest of the undamaged parts of this engine cover, I died today.....oh the poor carbon fiber fairies who made this product......:(

Sean, this is what I'm hoping as well. I sent them an email with pictures showing the extent of damages to this item "as it arrived" to my location. I am hoping they will resend me the product that I had already paid for and this time pay more attention to how this product is wrapped up for shipment. It was apparent the person who wrapped up my product did a half-azz job doing so...:facepalm

Looks like they did a poor job packaging it. Then a list job taping the box.

No fragile labels wither so box was thrown around.

Good luck.
