I've been looking at random-orbit sanders for the wife for Christmas (she's getting into some light crafting & furniture refinishing), & I found a Porter Cable 6" Variable-Speed Random-Orbit sander / polisher & wanted our resident detailing gurus' opinion on it for novice detailing. I figured that if I could get one tool that could pull double duty for the wife & also open the door for me to some DIY detailing, why not?

It's a model 7346SP, & its specs are listed as 6" pad, & variable speed 2,500 – 6,800 orbits per minute.

Good idea? Bad idea?

I have the PC 7424XP and love it.

In fact, for my little detailing business that I do on the side. We have two. The slightly older 7424 and the slightly newer 7424XP.

I would definitely recommend it.

I would have to suggest the Griot's 6 Inch Random Orbital Polisher Gen 3 (https://detailersdomain.com/Griots-Garage_c_224.html) -- > Its got more power and a lifetime warranty against factory defects.

This is the machine we choose over the PC in our shop.

We have 10% off forum discount code and free shipping till the end of the month.

That's the exact PC I have. Got it from Lowe's too. I love it, works great for me. I've never used anything else though, and any PC is better than doing it by hand!

I will say it didn't come with the hook & loop backing plate to attach buffing pads. I had to order one and I got the uber 6" from DetailersDomain for $20.

Thanks for the opinions, folks; I think I'mma go for it!

And Phil, if I get a serious case of detailing fever after my entry with this PC, I'm sure I'll be frequenting your shop quite a bit in the future!! :thumbup

Hey, I just checked out the one Phil recommended. I think you should get that one. It will be the same price after you buy the correct backing plate for the PC, and it has a 6 position handle. That is something I really wish mine had. I'm always pushing on the top on the PC and some times my hand slips off, or I get that sweet groove pattern pertinently etched into my palm. It looks way more ergonomic, and for the same price I do it instead.

Either way, like I said before, any polisher is better than none.
