View Full Version : Car shuts off when driving...

OK. This is the only real issue I'm having after my engine swap. While I'm driving and slowing to stop, I'll push in the clutch and the RPMs will surge. Sometimes it will keep surging until I've stopped. Others it will just shut off. It restarts easily but, if I'm still rolling with the clutch depressed, it may just shut back off. About everything on this engine is new. The DISA is new, ICV is clean, new MAF, fuel filter is new, and even a new PCV. Where should I start with this?

If you take your foot off of the brake while your slowing to a stop, does the surging stop?

ICV could be clean, but failed.

Keith knows something......hmm.

Brake depression pulling on throttle wire ( is it even a wire in the e46?)? Wonder what keith is stewing on.

Something with brake booster perhaps.

I'm totally over my mechanical head here, but I was thinking if it was a vacuum leak that came on hard during braking that it could be a leak or problem with the brake booster.

Figured that if the stumble stopped when he lifted off the brake that it would point to the brake booster pulling extra unmetered air in.

So... You're thinking, under breaking it introduces a vacuum leak, then when he releases, vacuum leak goes away.

Not necessarily goes away, but becomes less severe.

Would explain why it's stumbling/stalling under braking but not when he lifts.
