Very nice build thread. Question regarding the switch from road racing, is your setup going to build enough power to consistently power through the drifts?

Drifting requires big power to be competitive, and it will kill a car. I'll stick with grassroots drift events (usually expo center parking lots) for now. Cheap tires pumped to 50 psi slide well with the cars power band. It's all about keeping the speed consistent and shifting the weight.

My true driving passion is in road course driving. I've done a bit more of that lately.

I just strongly feel that the zhp is more built for road racing and auto cross. I think an E46/36 with a LS1 drivetrain would be killer in drifting!

Glad you liked it! It's been a fun project & I've learned a lot along the way. The ZHP is truly an incredible car - I much prefer to drive it, even when I have some exotic options available to me. Nothing is the same - I love it.

The car has been very good to me. As I get settled in SoCal - I plan completely overhauling the cosmetic bits and making it pretty again. I've also just discovered that Bimtune now supports MS45.1! AWESOME - I can finally tune it for the mods.

I should've put an S54 in it and called it a day, lol. Funny thing is, I almost did. I had a parts car lined up, but somebody beat me to it by a few hours. Otherwise, it would be a S54ZHP.

It's fun building these things. Nothing like an E46, specifically a ZHP.

The worst part is seperating the exhaust from the headers for the first time. Those studs and nuts are usually rusted to the point that they just snap. Then you have to drill them out. PITA.

I think I had a partial DIY for the diff swap some where... It's really easy to do. I swapped 3 times on my car and once in Charlie's ZHP, you don't even have to take the wheels off.

You have to use heat to get the header bolts off or they will just snap. Heat them cherry red. If they do snap, the bolts are just pressed in. They hammer right out. Put some heat on the flange if you have trouble...

If I find the time I'll do a DIY, I have some pics...

The LSD diff is one of my favorite mods :)

With those studs, they were a PITA for me. I sprayed them down, heated them up and they still snapped. Ended up having to drill all of them out which took forever.

It's tempting, Dane. It's tempting. The Vorshlag swap kit & arduino Canbus integration board from Thaniel on bimmerforums make it an easy swap nowadays...

Nah. Looking for another e46 to setup for DE's. Would swap my suspension over to it and find something softer for the ZHP.

Ideally I'll find a roller e46 that needs a motor. That would prompt me to build a s54 for the ZHP, and swap my built m54 into the DE car.

But yeah, doubt that's going to happen anytime soon.

Side note, googling c2 zhp brought me to this thread long before I was a member. Love your car and your approach. I'm always following the progress.

This week I started with getting the interior of the ZHP back up to par. The car has seen 170,000 miles now, and mechanically is very solid, but is slacking in the cosmetic department.

I started by removing and repainting the rear parcel shelf. It wasn't hard, but it was a bit of a PITA - I had to remove more items than I anticipated, and those darn push rivets broke, so Long Beach BMW charged me $8 for four of them.

I used black Duplicolor fabric paint from Autozone (the flat finish). It's noticeably darker than the faded seats, but matches very well with the headliner.

233752337623377233782337923380233812338223383

Next, I removed the A and C pillars, and plan on removing the B pillars after the new year. I'll be ordering black alcantara fabric to re-wrap the group. Whatever is left over will be used toward making a new shift boot and e-brake boot. Then, maybe a new coby wheel.

Nice work. Those plastic rivets at a big PITA. I always lose at least one of the middle push parts [emoji45]. Looks so much better now!

Been a while since I've updated this thread.... aside from general maintenance, the car has remained the same for the most part - it's looking rougher cosmetically as I drive the car more, and harder, and is on the brink of 200k miles.

I've sent the diff back to Dan at Diffsonline for a refresh and upgrade to more aggressive specs, and have these in the works:

Triples. MCS E46 struts have swaybar mounts on both sides, allowing them to be unisex. Great for the race guys as with this configuration, they can keep as little as one front and rear for spares.

full disclaimer, I actually work for MCS - that's what brought me back to the East Coast. Long before I worked for MCS, I was a believer in their products, and that weighed heavily on my decision to quit a reaaaallly great paying job in California, and move back to the South East and get into Motorsports for a living.

The clunking you are likely referring to is something some of the older 2WNR sets may demonstrate in cold weather (typically under 50 deg F). Just like anything MCS makes, the team stands behind it, and if anyone out there has any issues, it's as simple as a phone call to us, and it'll get resolved. That specific issue is a simple fix, where we rebuild the dampers with updated parts; and it's strictly the earlier 2WNR damper systems that can experience this, our 1WNR and remote reservoir damper setups use a different configuration.

The 2WNR is awesome, being able to make the adjustments (both bump & rebound) from the same knob is what caught my eye years ago, and that's when I started looking into MCS to use on my ZHP. Other systems require making one of the changes from underneath the car, and that I didn't like, especially when it's wet/raining - which is when you are most likely to make a change, hehe - crawling underneath a car on wet grass/pavement isn't fun.

Fast forward a few years, and somehow I ended up working here; funny how life works out sometimes :cool

Oh so it was you lol I remember I read somewhere that one of the members said that they worked at MCS (discount? :eeps jk not ready to buy at all lol). Yeah I looked into their stuff for awhile now. Since they came out practically. I remember reading that they were from Moton and after they got bought by AST. They went and created MCS. So I have no doubts about their quality. I've also heard great things about their CS so yeah.

Yeah I love that idea for the knobs. I hated going under the car and when your car is too low, it's even more of a bitch lol Glad to know the clunking issue has been resolved though. I haven't checked about them since I last read about that. Been keeping myself from researching shit so I don't buy stuff this year lol

But yeah, congrats on getting that job. Sucked that we couldn't meet. I think you were supposed to check out JR's car for the longest time on my lift but it never worked out. I'm looking forward to your review of those triples.

I thought long and hard about it, and ultimately, it's one of the best decisions I've made. Even with the big bucks in California, the quality of living was poor. The idea of spending a million dollars on a 60 year old fixer-upper home didn't bode well. Even with the big pay cut, I am living a more comfortable lifestyle in the South East - plenty of *new* homes, on nice sized lots, with great views, for 1/4 - 1/5 the cost.

Yeah, the damper world is very interesting, it's a very small community! I'm fortunate to be working with some incredible guys and the amount of knowledge and experience that they have is unreal - I learn something every. damn. day.

It is a shame that we didn't ever get a chance to link up while I was out there, I'll be in Fontana next month for the Porsche Festival of Speed, which isn't terribly far from you, IIRC?

Dressed up the dampers the other day. Hyperco helpers & guides, Eibach springs, and vorshlag camber plates up front, and typical non-coilover configuration in the rear with BimmerWorld spherical shock mounts.

Decided to spring it soft to start with, at 625lbs up front, and 750lbs in the rear. Will bump up to 800/900 and ditch the rear bar in the near future.

Very cool. Where do you mount, for back of a better name, the "accessory"/"inboard" portion of the shock/strut?

The rear setup as built functions identically to a stock setup - the rear shock uses the OE pickup points and pin mount/rear shock mount, and the spring will sit in the "bucket", like an OE spring would. Adjustable spring perches coming into play here.

When we build these in coilover configuration, the shock becomes eye-to-eye, and a double shear bracket/clevis mount is used on the underside of the rear shock tower pickup point.

I think he was talking about mounting the external reservoir.

Sweet set-up though

very nice looking, wyatt. why those spring rates, though? isn't that way too stiff for the front? what is your suspension frequency going to be?

Update: I got the dampers on the car - reservoirs are mounted temporarily until I decide on a more permanent setup. Big thanks to the guys at Markert Motor Works for letting me use a lift & tools. Thanks Dave, Rob, Tyler, David, Andres, and Ray!

The diff came back from Diffsonline - did a 3.46 R&P swap and rebuild/upgrade to the limited slip unit itself. Thanks Dan!

Not much to report today. Unboxed the diff and put the cover on. Will be getting it in the car at some point in the near future.

No sir! Unlike the other diffs I ran before making the switch to Diffsonline, anything Dan builds seems to be indestructible. I'm hard on equipment and my diff is no exception....

I sent it off for a refresh and upgrade to 4 friction discs with more aggressive ramps.

Finally got around to popping the diff in at my buddies shop over the weekend. Thanks, Graham!

Also, big thanks to Dan @ Diffsonline on the killer setup. 4 clutch w/ 35/60 ramps. So. Much. Grip.

I've really been diggin' the black wheels lately. I think I'll throw street tires on them and keep the conti Hoosiers on the silver wheels.

The missing fender liner makes it look even more racecar. Was that removed for tire clearance or because of an oopsie?

C) ZHP Superleggera.

Jokes aside, car does look good on that wheel/tire combo.

Imgur is okay, but I don't love its organization. Flickr is a really good option as well.

Every DIY I've been looking at for my Mk7 has all the pics on Photobucket...and every single thing except the thumbnail is blocked! You just have to tick a box to enable 3rd party hosting, I'm not sure if it is a chargeable service.

Iono if it's the same for others. But at least for my DIYs, if you right-click and open the picture in a new tab, it goes straight into the photobucket page for it. That's what I've been telling people to do when they hit me up about my DIY pictures not working.

It's been a hot minute since I've updated this thread! I suspect I'll have a good update for the family soon, but nothing entirely new as of late - been doing some tidying up in my spare time:

https://imgur.com/JD2cQ4u

and the the E91 daily driver has been serving its purpose quite well!

The ZHP is on stands in the garage and has been in resting quite a bit over the last year and a half. We'll bring her back to life soon enough; race season will soon be over.
