Cleaned up the donor 3.46 ring and pinion from the recent teardown. Just waiting on the Koyo pinion bearings and races to send everything to WPC.

It seems whoever builds the differential at BMW also signs the pinion.. maybe?

Found something else to add to the list of To Do?s. I had a feeling the steering felt a little sloppy/loose.

Yup...Definitely overdue! Can't tell if the shocks are leaking or just showing a little wet?
And I?ll be back heee looking for suggestions if I should go OEM or a slight upgrade? My goal is to keep things as close to bone stock as possible?maybe.

Lots of good options, I am a fan of the Koni Yellows with stock ZHP springs.

Koni Special Active (formerly FSD) shocks with ZHP springs has been really smooth and responsive for me over the years, first with the stock stabilizers and now with bigger ones. I wish I could put them on all my older cars.

Just to clarify, you kept the original springs or replaced with OEM ZHP springs? I imagine springs do wear out or get tired?

I'm sure they do get tired over time, but I don't know if its actually quantifiable. I would prefer to use original ZHP springs IF they are in good condition with no corrosion.

I completed my Alcantara dash trim project on my Mini Cooper yesterday and took the following pictures of my completed project. The new look, in my opinion, provides a much more polished interior look to my Mini and I love the new look.
I also took this opportunity to mount my new iPhone holder to my digital gauge cluster since I had to remove it in order to access the dash trim behind it for my Alcantara wrap.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54433766256_f71363cf1d_b.jpg
the plastic trim around my infotainment display had to be trimmed in order to fit perfectly in my JCW so I wrapped that part of the display in Alcantara to clean that display up as well. Doing this tied in the dash trim so it turned out to be a good addition to my Alcantara dash project.
https://live.staticflickr.com/6553554434014593_b54cf6cfb8_c.jpg
Here's another view of the dash trim behind the digital gauge cluster after I had wrapped it in Alcantara. You also see the new iPhone mount in this picture. The dash trim looks perfect!

My interior will be pretty much completed once I reroute my dash cam power line which I plan to do today. Once this is done my dash will be clean.
I am having lots of fun getting my JCW set up the way I what it. :)

I spent the afternoon changing out front grills on my JCW which required me to take off the front bumper so that I would have easier access to the parts that I had to unclip and then clean out the front bumper before reinstalling it to the car then adding the new GP3 parts which, in my opinion, really improved the looks of the car.

I also replaced my Garmin Dash Cam Mini2 dash cam for an updated Dash Cam Mini3 dash cam on my Mini Cooper. The Dash Cam Mini2 will be repurposed to my Porsche as a rear facing dash cam in that car. I am enjoying getting my JCW set up so that I can take it on my annual long distance road trip north to the Baltimore area later this year... I am looking forward to taking this car out for a long drive. :cool

Yup! Came in the kit I ordered. I sorta wish I ordered replacement bolts/nuts and washers. They get varnished pretty easily. It was a pain to clean them. I know I don?t need to, but I felt a little better knowing they?re somewhat clean.
Here they are about as clean as I?m gonna get them. Below with the new grommets. Used a wire brush and engine degreaser on the hardware.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250414/698d1b2ca43d1d977ca3b6a04fe240df.jpg
FCP Euro has stainless steel replacements. Kinda cool but?. Seems a little out of place and too shiny for this engine bay.
ETA: This is cylinder #4. Not sure what this indicates. I have new coils, so no biggie there. But I wonder what causes that burnt end. Spark plugs haven?t come out yet, that?s next. We?ll see what that shows if anything. And all of the coils were slightly oily around the gasket seal and there was some oil around the front corner and on the metal things below the VCG on the exhaust side. Definitely time for this job.

If the engine cover is left off water can get in during rains and what not. Not super common of course, but I've seen it.

Nice!

I had the Cerakote headlight lens kit, but the chemical de-oxidizer wasn't sufficient. I ended up using the left over 3m kit with the drill sanding pad. 500 grit, 800 grit, then 1200 grit. After sanding I used some left over polish before cleaning it and sealing it with the Cerakote product. Hope it lasts a bit longer than the random clear-coat rattle can I used last time. Turned out alright.
Turned out pretty good for left-over / old polish products.

Oil light came on pulling into the parking lot for dinner. OIL!!!! What the!!!! Anyhow, no light when I got home. The dipstick was showing a quart low. Added a quart and all is good.
ETA: Last oil change was back in 2023 with roughly 1,000 miles of driving. Probably on par with other cases of burning oil (?).

One time, I waited two years to do an oil change. The tech reported my oil filter was crumbling because of the long interval.
Now I try to get an oil change annually, regardless of mileage.

Interesting. I don?t remember the filter feeling any different at the last oil change. It wasn?t that many miles either. Probably 2k maybe less? Not at my computer at the moment.
I?ve heard others say to change your oil at least annually or even every 6 mos regardless of mileage(!).

I bet the oil filter's quality is a big factor. In my case, I bought the car from a Chevrolet dealer and they changed the oil before the sale.
I have no clue which brand they used.

introducing a little more vacuum on the crankcase, aka the '02 pilot mod', really helps with oil consumption. it nearly went to zero for me on multiple vehicles.

I use Mobil 1 synthetic. Easy to find and cheap.
I had planned on doing an oil change after the valve cover gasket job, but haven?t gotten around to it yet.
Been busy caring for my mom (91!!!). She?s been bed-hopping. Going from her assisted living facility to the ER/hospital, then to a skilled nursing facility and now to a Board and Care.
Anyways, back to our regularly scheduled thread?
Q: Does it really matter which kind of Mobil 1 as long as it?s the correct weight? (European formula, Extended Interval, 10,000 mile etc).

introducing a little more vacuum on the crankcase, aka the '02 pilot mod', really helps with oil consumption. it nearly went to zero for me on multiple vehicles.I remember reading about that! Always thought of it but never got around to it. Heck, I have an M56 VC sitting on my garage shelf for the past 2 years haha. Kinda sad
Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkOh man, sorry to hear. Had to deal with the same thing with my father as well - ER, chemo, now to senior home. Sucks since I'm the only child and live on a different coast.
When I used Mobil 1 I used 0W40 european car formula. Nowadays I just buy Rotella T6 by the case (3x1 gallon) from Amazon and it's $66 when on sale... Pretty good deal if you ask me!

Sorry about your mom's circumstances, hope she's stable and has the help she needs. It can be a lot dealing with aging folks (I'm in that boat too).
As for oil, I also use M1 because it's readily available at Walmart and reasonably priced. I usually go with 0w-40, but any of them should be fine (5w30, 5w40, 0w40, Euro formula, extended, etc).
As for the oil consumption, I'm lucky my car doesn't burn a drop. The previous owner did a great job with shorter oil change intervals which I think kept the internals free of buildup. From what I read, many of the cars that did the factory extended oil change intervals (up to 15k miles) ended up losing oil due to the clogged up oil-control rings.
If I had that problem I would consider trying this regimen on the next oil change: Any good synthetic oil (M1, Pennzoil, Valvoline, Shell, etc) and a quart of the HPL Engine Cleaner oil (https://www.advlubrication.com/products/engine-cleaner?srsltid=AfmBOopN2xDFE-_EHosDiN1ithp4dCuv1FtsReJGtfnESflARxaLqD4w). Follow their instructions (I believe, an oil filter change at 1000 miles and then a filter and complete oil change at 3000 miles). It dissolves a lot of the gunk build up, the oil comes out blacker than usual (if that makes any sense).
And then follow it with some Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w30 (https://www.valvolineglobal.com/en/restore-and-protect/) for a couple oil changes at 5000 mile intervals.
My brother had a slight oil consumption problem (1 quart every 2-3k miles) in his Toyota, and now magically it doesn't after the HPL cleaner oil and Valvoline R&P.
After 3-4 oil changes (I usually go 5k mile intervals), much of the gunk should be cleared up, switch back to any oil you prefer. Freeing the oil-control rings from built up gunk is key.
Also, ensure your oil separator hoses are free from cracks and the system is vacuum leak-free.

Yeah, it is definitely a trial and my wife and I aren?t spring chickens exactly either.
Thanks for the insight!!! I?ll check that out. I?ve seen a lot about the Valvoline oil lately. Seems to work really well!
My oil change was 14k for the first one back when I didn?t know any better. 2nd one was 28k. After that just about 7500 or 5000 miles after that.
