WOW, thank you guys so much for your replies... Your replies are simply too much!! Makin' me feel all :wub inside... :biggrin

William- no spacers... 18x8.5", ET35 all the way around. I'm planning to space out the rears by 8-10mm... Have to do some test fitting first..

Dane- Thanks man, still a few small touches on the outside, mainly piano grills and the CF diffuser.

Justin- Honestly man, if you fit them onto the OEM splitter, the outside rounded part sticks out about a 1/4". So you have to move them inward. And then, at that top inside corner, there is a touch of curvature that doesn't sit flush with the bumper... They did end up working just fine, but it took some finesse (forcing them into place, one of the beauties of CF, its pliable!) and I ended up doing TWO layers of double sided tape. This gave me a little more thickness on the tape, helping to manage some of the gap... Yes, I will post an install pic...

Rando- Yeah man, I agree... But at the same time, after years of building body kits in college, even stuff that is perfectly molded off of OEM parts will still take a LITTLE tweaking... I would've been SHOCKED if they were perfect... I'm just keeping a DAMN close eye on them right now to make sure they stay in place... The minute I see them popping off, I'll be removing them and figuring a better plan...

Thanks to the rest of you for your comments!! BP/Ryan- Wow, super happy for your comments... Its good to hear stuff like that from two people I consider to be "veterans" of the site.. :wub

More pics OUT of the garage coming soon... Oh, and moar modz put on!! :shifty

When are you going to change out the grills? It's killing the front. :mob The splitters look good. It's definitely a cleaner look than my cap-type.

Re: the shift knob. Did it come with this plastic ring that went into the boot and you just hadn't put it in yet or...?

Re: the mirrors. What's the removal and installation like? I've had my eye on those side mirrors for awhile but wasn't sure how hard it would be to install.

And is your computer all working right now? :-)

Ahem. My questions? :-)

Ahem. My questions? :-)

The mirror installation is super simple. You just push the outer edge until you can get either your finger or a small tool beneath the inner edge closest to the door and pop off. Then disconnect the two wires for the heating element. Reconnect two wires, line up the mirror and pop back on.

Grills have been ordered.... :thumbsup

Ahem. My questions? :-)

Sorry man... Ok... Here's your answers...

1. Yes, I believe most of the new cars come with the knob/boot as one piece. The plastic ring holds the boot tight up against the knob and clips to the bottom of the knob. I pulled the ring out and then placed it inside the top of my new boot. It sits flush up against the shift knob, and the ring shape holds the boot in the same shape as the bottom of the knob. Works great.

2. Installation isn't tough. Like Sean said, crank the mirror all the way in one direction and pop it off. Don't pull to hard or you'll tear the ribbon cables for the mirror heating... And then just press the new ones back on.

3. Eh, iMessages seems to be linked up now, but my phone is retarded anyway... The speaker is getting worse by the day... New phone is borderline imminent...

Thanks for the assist... :thumbsup

I know Jon has first stab at these parts (I forget what he needs exactly), Dane, but I broke my black driver side headlight trim when changing my lens gaskets (and the gaskets don't even fit). To top it all off, BMW doesn't seem to sell the trim separately. Would you be willing to part with that?

Antone, you're looking for the bezel... And no, I don't need that, so if Dane will part, its all yours... Dane, I need the actual inner lens holder. The black plastic, 4 legged piece that are on either side of the two black HID bulb outer covers.

I'll take em both if'n you don't mind...

Same reason... mine have already been retrofitted with M3 AL projectors but the projectors are FUBAR and the highbeams don't work 90% of the time. :(
Has yours been modified? If not, then yours is perfectly moddable for the retrofit...

Jon,

I talked to Adam at Detailer's Domain yesterday specifically about detailing a white car and he said that it was very difficult to get any depth off of any white car however he did make the following recommendations of products you could use to have a brilliant shine on your ZHP :thumbsup

Swirl & Haze Remover - for light swirls
http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/pp37/macdctr/Detail%20Products/SwirlandHazeRemover_zps19b7f87d.png

Severe Swirl Remover - for paint correction
http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/pp37/macdctr/Detail%20Products/SevereSwirlRemover_zpsecd892b8.png

Detail spray - on warm-to-hot paint surfaces you can use detail spray on the buffing pad
http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/pp37/macdctr/Detail%20Products/DetailSpray_zpsd3f3f039.png

Fine Machine Polish - step before sealing your paint
http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/pp37/macdctr/Detail%20Products/FineMachinePolish_zpsb45ab0b9.png

Machine Super Sealant - to seal that beautiful paint :)
http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/pp37/macdctr/Detail%20Products/SuperSealant_zps49fd1ca5.png

Once you have your car set up then you can use the following products to keep that beautiful shine going :thumbsup
Brilliant Glaze
http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/pp37/macdctr/Detail%20Products/BrilliantGlaze_zpsf8cee69d.png

Jon...after seeing Adam work on this poorly maintained black 330i (the paint was in horrid condition), he was able to resort the luster on the paint surface and it was very smooth.
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/04/14/uqe6ymam.jpg

The stripe in the middle was from the tape to show the before and after...seeing it in person really showed the improvements from using Adam's products. I was impressed!

These were the products Adam used. I'm in the process of switching completely over to his products after seeing his detail session. I know this will help get your AW ZHP looking at her best :thumbsup Call me if you have any questions :)

JupiterBMW
04-14-2013, 04:55 PM
Thanks for the info Charlie... I'm pretty happy with the Mequiar's Ultimate line, but I'll look into the Adam's stuff as I think its available at the local stores... From what I've been reading though, any paint correction is first, and then a good sealant, followed by a wax just for shine... I think the 'wax' I use is actually a sealant, but I'll have to double check...

Sadly, it'll be another couple of weeks before I get her cleaned up... Going out of town on Wednesday for a week, then home for a day, then out of town for 6 more days... Uggghhhh!

Finally, after almost 2 months, some updates to my original post and new pics of the progress... I realize a lot of you saw her at the reunion, but for those of you that weren't there, I felt I needed to update my thread. I've got more mods on order too, so more updates will come. I won't let it slide this long again without updates!! Anyway, updates are to the original post, and some new pics are below.

The OEM aux input, in the not-so-OEM location. I like this better as I can much easier connect, and then remove and stow the cable when needed.

Close up of the gloss black kidney grills and the custom ///M stripes

Dinan muffler and carbon fiber diffuser. Two of my favorite mods. :)

A closer shot of the front end showing black grills, ///M stripes, refreshed lower grill, splitters, and clear corners. Each of these mods made a huge improvement I think.

There's a threaded stud attached to the rear bumper that goes through the body and secured with a nut. The stud extends about 5mm beyond the nut and often rubs. Just take your rear wheels off and grind it flush with the nut. 8679

Yeah, I just removed that clip completely. Another ZHP friend/owner had removed his at least a year prior to me removing mine and had had no issues with it being gone completely.

Thanks for the replies and info guys. I actually dremeled a bunch of the plastic back. I was able to see the rub marks and it was very subtle. I then repositioned the clips and they fit in tighter than before. Finally, I dremeled the studs down flush with the nut for the clips. I gained a good amount of clearance on both sides. Will report back after hitting the offending corners and see how she reacts... :) Pretty sure I got it though.

What spacer size do you have?

No spacers man... The offset is ET35, so they fit and look really wide, but not spaced at all. I want to lower next, and if everything is still good, then I might try and space the back out just a touch... But we'll see.

Thanks for the replies guys. I went with the VisionPro 3000K setup, purchased online from www.xenonking.com. I actually had ordered the McCulloch brand kit from that same site years ago for my last car, but this time they didn't have that kit, so I went with the VisionPro.

To be honest, I'm not 100% happy. Both kits said they were 3000K, but the bulbs on my last setup were much more yellow. These are less yellow for sure.

But to answer your question, 3000K is what the bulbs said.

A great setup, just wished the bulbs were a bit more yellow.

Yeah to be honest, I'd have to go look at my car. I definitely want to refinish the door handles in the same brushed aluminum look as my speaker grill trim, but I don't know if the effort is worth the small change for the gauge rings. I'd have to see about that... I'm going to work on the door handles first. :)

Giving my own thread a bump... With a lot of interest in the car from the CCA classifieds, and what sounds like a very serious/interested guy, I'm looking back at this thread and reminiscing. I'm torn with what to do (hence the thread in the Members' Only section). But, reading through this thread does make me miss the car a little more. If only I could stumble across another $50k and pick up the M3 I really want. Then this decision would be easy!

Anywho, I sure do enjoy modding the car and I have a few plans for when I'm home. :)

Imola.ZHP

Why not wait it out? M3's will continue to drop in value as the new ones come about. Even the clean ones with low miles, there is a post on bimmerpost.com about the end totals for the e9X M3's, lots of 2008's out there. I almost leased one in 2008 when the housing market tanked and BMW dealers freaked out at the end of the year still having 2008's on the lot. $10k off and crazy cheap lease rate, thats not relevant to the subject here, but I think you would miss your car if you let it go. Good luck with your decision!

Jon,

Just out of curiosity are the wheels made by Avant Garde? And what is your opinion of them besides how they look?

Yes, they are AG wheels. Obviously I love the look! Aside from that, I'm really happy with them. They are painted, and I did curb one of them (actually backing into my garage, it scuffed my floor jack...) so those few marks show up as black chips now, but whatever... The quality of the wheels though looks to be exceptionally good. The center caps appear to be just a little smaller than stock, but I didn't compare them side by side. I've read a few mixed reviews about the VMR wheels (my other choice when I was buying) and I heard nothing but good things about these wheels, so I went with these. I couldn't be happier.

I never heard or read anything about people having issues, so I figured they can't be too bad. Florida is all flat with really good roads, so I don't foresee any issues. And the way I look at it... A lot of people in the BMW scene in South Florida have a ton of money. If a lot of those guys buy AG wheels, then they must be pretty good at least??

They've all got money to burn, and typically they're running on Vossen, HRE or AG wheels... For what its worth anyway...

2013 328i sedan, $199/month lease/24mths, $5K down, 10K miles/year. 5 of them
2013 128i coupe $199/month lease/36mths, $5K down, 10K miles/year. 1 of them (demo special).

Imola.ZHP
08-26-2013, 06:37 AM
The $5k down is the kicker, if you spread that out over 24 months and add it back to the $199 you will have essentially paid ~$407/month for the term of the lease. If you walk away from the car at that point, you have just spent (and lost) ~$10,000.

I know my car has been getting a bit expensive with maintenance, but I still think I'm doing the "right" thing by keeping it and not buying something else until I can afford EXACTLY what I want. Also now that I live 2.2 miles from work, my car is now under 12k a year (average) and that average will possibly drop to 11.5k a year by its birthday next year, I think our car's values are at a point where as long as their condition stays good, and their mileage doesn't get too high, their value will not be dropping as drastically anymore.

The 2er is on the horizon also guys, and quite possibly a 2er GC which should be close to an e46 sedan size (hopefully). And who knows, possibly an M2 and/or M2 GC as well. I'll just sit back and keep paying down my house note and see, too many great things coming from BMW in the near future; and if they turn out not to be so great, then in the meantime e90 M3's and x5 M's will keep dropping in value (by decently large percentages) every month.

derbo
08-26-2013, 08:12 AM
That's a great plan. I wanted an E46 M3 or E92 M3 but financially I'm not there yet. In the meantime, I decided to keep the zhp. Since I drive close to 40K/year , I opt to get a second car so the zhp mileage stays a bit more constant. Now it's close to 5k year and the Prius takes the 35k/yr blunt of it.

I too am waiting for e9x to drop in price. A stick sedan is getting harder to find. :/

I have to agree with Dennis and Derek here. Firstly I couldn't own/drive a 128 or 328. I just can't justify spending money on something I didn't want to own/lease. And Dennis makes the exact point I was thinking. The $10-12k spent (and subsequently lost) by leasing either of those cars is money down the drain. No matter what I do with the ZHP, the cost/drop in value won't be that much over 2-3 years. So, it's cheaper to own the ZHP, and after all is said and done, I still have the title to a car I enjoy. After 3 years of a lease I have nothing but empty pockets and an empty garage.

So, I'll keep the ZHP until I can afford the unicorn E90 ///M3 ZCP. In a perfect world, the E90 will drop in value as the new F80 ///M3 becomes the most desirable car... In an even more perfect world, the ZHP value will hold steady or perhaps even go up. That's doubtful, but ok with me. I got a good deal and I don't have any loans on the car, so it essentially costs me nothing to hang on to it.

Marcus- Hey man, mileage driven has nothing to do with it! I have only put about 5K on my car since I bought it! I really like these "OEM mods", or retrofitting other options into the car.

Derek- The coding line said something about set pin 20 to rear foglight or something like that. The actual line in NCS dummy is "PIN_20_ALS_NSL". Set that to active. Good luck!

Dammit Jon. Now I have another modification to look for. How much did you end up paying for a LKM? On eBay I'm seeing from $15 to $160. I don't want to overpay.

Well I paid close to $100 for my US LCM with SW 4.0 and then another $150 or so for the euro LKM for the faceplate.

Good luck.

I think the wrong light is illuminated, Joop... it's supposed to be the trunk light. I guess it doesn't matter, I just found that weird. I want to find a way to hook up the rear fog button to my reverse lights.

I'm sure there's a pin assignment somewhere. Your location is pretty good too, it's just a little too close to the turn signal and brake lights; someone might mistake it for a brake light.

Yeah agreed. I want it to appear as a brake light, but you're right, similar/close to a turn signal. I will look into some coding tomorrow and see if I can change it.

Everytime I google e46 rear fog, I get del Marco stuff. But I believe BP is right. Of course UK is on the RHD so it's on the right side in the pic.

Love the tiny ass 316 exhaust on the ZHP bumper. :rofl

It's just an M-Sport bumper, not ZHP specific. They offered the M-Sport package on any 3 series in Europe and other parts of the world, so even a 316i can look just like a ZHP does right out of the factory. Specifically, it's a M-Tech II appearance package. It does look weird, I agree.
I also find it weird looking how the diesels have downturned exhaust pipes. Just looks unnatural...

Ok, so lately I've been really slack on getting my project thread updated... Also, a few posts up, BP explicitly asked for some natural brown pics. Well, I wanted to do some shots anyway as I've got a few new mods, and I'm glad to accommodate. :biggrin

The biggest changes since my last update are the BMW Performance strut bar, as well as the TPMS reset button on the dash, completing the full TPMS retrofit mod.

But for now, just some new pics. I am still practicing with our DSLR (when I get time which lately, hasn't been much) and I am trying to hone my skills. So, comments are always welcome. I didn't post ALL the pics I took here, just my favorites.

Actually, I didn't really notice any sound difference at all. I feel like it has great pull on the highway, but I am sure the majority of that is the AFE scoops, not the intake itself.

Its a nice looking mod, OEM quality. Overall, I'm happy with it.

Alright folks, I've been home a few weeks, and after a vasectomy, a huge painting project in the house, and of course, lots of time with my girls, I finally got some time to work on my car! I've made updates to the original post HERE (http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?8759-Jon-s-03-Alpine-White-Sedan-Project) but you can also check out these latest pics... These are just a couple in progress pics, but overall, I'm very happy with my latest editions...

First on the list was to add my Mafia Christmas gift, the first aid box. Now I have a great place to keep my coding cables and whatnot. Eventually I'll get one under the passenger seat too, but for now my glove box is a little more freed up, so that makes me happy. :) Also, the throttle body and upgrade in software did give me a little more feel in the butt dyno, but like with all Dinan mods, subtle... Of course, adding the Dinan badge was the biggest improvement. Something about the Dinan badge, just sort of commands a presence, at least that's how I feel. Just gives the car a sort of custom look, and a badge unlike the ///M which seems to be making its way onto all SORTS of vehicles lately... So, I'm glad to be in a somewhat exclusive club (not trying to be an elitist, sorry...) :biggrin

Anyway, here's a couple pics... A full shoot will come soon, as soon as a couple more mods are installed and a full detail is completed (the car is getting both in the very near future!).
