Teaser currently. I will have some photos and stuff up once I get a chance to stop tearing apart the old 330xi.

@Rby - There are seat warmers. That was one of the options I must have. I didn't want to attempt that retrofit. However lumbar support didn't seem too hard though.

I mean what I did was take out the seats from the 330xi and followed this guide to retrofit it in.

http://www.tmk.com/lumbar/index.shtml

The worst part was the tree clips and the cover panel. Be careful with those piece since it's a pain to take them off and a pain to put them back on. I should have document the the whole process but I the guide that is out there is really useful besides the point of taking the back seat covers off.

If that was the case, they wouldn't be able to charge $25 to remove it..

Our boots are seperated anyways, I think it will fit perfectly fine without being attached to the boot.

Thank you to Raymond Lee for my 8 month belated birthday present.

I installed the new shift knob today with the old boot. I am not a fan of the leather boot plus it does not really go well with the rest of the alcantara set up in the car. Overall I am really satisfied with the way things turned out.

So let's begin with the write up.

The first step I tried was using a heat gun and heating up the middle ring while pushing down the leather inside out. Causing the glue to melt a little and giving me more room to work with. Then I press on the tab on the left and it release the ring from that side. The other two tabs are larger and I just ended up breaking them off. Pretty much the ring is used to keep the cloth from dropping too low from the shift knob itself. I did not reattach the ring to the knob. I will see how it works over the next week or two before I add a cable tie or something to hold it in place.

http://i.imgur.com/h53i6Es.jpg

I made two snips into the leather boot to remove the wiring from the shift boot.
http://i.imgur.com/wdoGjXT.jpg

Followed by snipping the plastic on the right from the ash tray holder wires.

Reinstalled everything

I will have some photos once it gets dark. Along with my feeling/opinions towards this knob and lighting.

I am sorry man! Honestly I blame Charlie for making me want to do so many mods for this car. :) Well it was a pretty easy mod overall. Not sure what to do with the plastic ring since it kinda just sits there. Eventually I would like to have the interior tri-stitch instead.

So I have driven with the knob for a few days and here is my review. The f10 m5 knob is amazing and the leather is soft. I can't really compare it to a brand new zhp knob however I would probably say it would feel similar. It feels just like the zhp knob and the lighting/color is prefect in terms of it matching the rest of the interior color. Overall I am way to happy that it was a gift for me and that all zhp should have came with this knob.

derbo
01-29-2013, 06:07 PM
Great review. A new ZHP knob is always awesome.. Did you just tap into the little ashtray light for the power source?

Tnhl1989
01-29-2013, 06:22 PM
Yep! I was thinking about splitting the wire so that the ash tray would continue to get the light up but I then figured when will I ever have it open and care about it being lit up or not. So I just use the wire that was there.

Tomorrow is going to be a long day doing super maintenance since I have no history of the car.

Started before Nemo hit and this is the result afterwards

http://i.imgur.com/0K7iOvdl.jpg

So after roughly a total of 15 hrs of working on the car I finally finished the CCV, oil filter housing gasket, vcg, spark plugs, vanos swap (seals already done before), intake boots changed, icv grommet (PITA) and vanos line. After all said and done I really hope I don't have to work on my car for a few days however I still got to a cooling system overhaul before things freeze up due to the weather.

http://i.imgur.com/EpnO8gZl.jpg

I found out that the oil in the car is running milky.

http://i.imgur.com/qO1AYcXl.jpg

I must have another seal to replace or something because it is also in the expansion tank. Any input on this matter would be helpful since I don't know how it is really happening.

http://i.imgur.com/nSBLQBll.jpg

I am just glad things sound a lot better now and will feel better once the overhaul is finished as well. Everything is taking a big toll on my back though since I am still recovering from the accident. Darn weather isn't making it any better.

cakM3
02-11-2013, 09:00 AM
From the looks of your expansion tank Tony, you may also want to consider replacing it... the dipstick changes color and starts to fade indicating its time to change it out...looks like your expansion tank dipstick has already begun to fade...

Nothing worse than having issues with your cooling system when you're out in BFE with no repair shops nearby....

I already have everything ready to do a swap. Just the weather has been really crappy.

Today I'm going to head over to a garage and stay warm while doing a complete overhaul on the cooling system. No more problems for a while after this bit. :)

Tnhl1989
02-14-2013, 11:30 PM
So today I finished off the major maintenance with a cooling system overhaul. Pretty much a lot easier to do since the zhp had an electric fan. The only thing that didn't seem right was the expansion tank sitting down didn't look flush but I guess that's how the engineers designed it. The coolant was brown/yellow assuming that some oil was leaking in the coolant and/or that the coolant the p/o put in wasn't bmw coolant. I'll have to check up again in a week to see if anything seems strange. Would love some input into the matter guys :)

Sounds like the po mixed in some green or yellow coolant.

I would go for a drain and refill again in the near future to make sure all of that garbage is out of there if you didn't do the block drain. The phosphates in the other coolants don't play well with the internals.

If it only happens when you're in neutral with clutch pedal depressed, I believe this is normal - it happens because our flywheels are lighter from what I've read. Try turning off with clutch pedal pressed in vs depressed. If you have a steptronic I have no idea!

Buy a gallon of BMW antifreeze. Buy two gallon jugs of distilled water. Dump one out, fill with second until both are equally full. Fill the rest of both with the antifreeze. Mark jugs with a sharpie.

This. Just hold the clutch pedal to the floor when shutting the car off and you won't get the rattle. This is "normal". Gear doesn't matter.

Tony, I occasionally have this with my ZHP and what I do to get rid of the rattle is depress the clutch. Don't need to depress all the way and the rattle will stop. Usually happens to me when I either first start my car or get ready to turn it off.

Tnhl1989
02-20-2013, 12:49 AM
I did the whole no clutch start mod so I suppose I never really thought it was a problem until after I did that. It has been bugging me for a bit afterwards however all seems good now. Once I get a chance to clean her I'll snap some photos. I also heard from Chad that someone could repair/patch work alcantara seats? I got a nice tear on the driver side bolster which I haven't got around to fixing yet. Possibly in the future I'll fix all the cars.

CLutch chatter and gear rattle is normal if you have an unsprung hub disc and the flywheel is light. On the 6 speed case it has an unsprung hub disc.

Have not updated in a while.
So after a few months of having the car. The first gift I received was a gund named "Wolfram". My personal passenger making sure that I don't do anything too crazy or speed while driving the car. Two months later I have finally decided on a name for my zhp. After meeting "Wobbie" a few times we have decided to name my car "Wulf" since it is totally a alpha male with a pet/passenger name "Wolfram". Thank you to two people in helping me decide on a name for this bad guy. Not really sure on what design however here is all the different designs (https://secure.rmv.state.ma.us/SpecialPlates/pltShow.aspx). I'm thinking "Preserve the trust" or "I'm animal friendly".

Soon I'll update with some more photos and mods. I have been taking care of a lot of maintenance so I'm pretty happy on where the car stands now. Now I just need to get the Beyern Type Mesh Wheels on the car and do a photo session :)

Next on the list to do is the auto dimming mirror.

Until you do your FXR, you should probably take your light switch off auto until you retrofit the auto lights because the lights are just permanently on in that position otherwise, further burning your bowls... :eeps

I realized today that only the passenger side auto level works and the driver side doesn't. What is the real benefits for the auto leveling? Worth the trouble to get it working again or should I just disable both?

danewilson77

The lights just won't level when you're going over bumps/hills. I personally don't think it's a big deal to NOT have this feature. Most likely your issue is within the headlight itself or the auto level motor...imo. Probably a PITA to fix.

Sourced out a set of rear clears and waiting for them to come in the mail.

Also purchased blind spot side mirrors and waiting to pick those up.

Cleaned up the alcantara seats with a fabric shaver. I still want to have them reupholster in the future since there is a tear and it looks all faded. Going to clean up the steering wheel today as well.

Find a set on the UK Ebay site. I can contact my contact person over there in regards to getting them and shipping cost. For the inner rear they were really dirty so Botond told me to take a screw driver and split it. I then took a old amber set I had and split those. I tried to paint the inner housings with black enamel follow by metallic paint but that didn't work too well. I'm not that experience with the whole painting business. Anyways I compounded and buff the crap out of the inner ones and epoxy them back together. They look a lot better after that. The chrome on the housings are easily scratch-able.

RLS is a task! A lot of work it seems already. I am waiting till the windshield is bad enough to have insurance cover it and then I'll get a oem windshield. That is another mod in the planning for me as well.

As for the other mods I can surely help you out on them since you are busy. I can do the headlights for you when I'm in town :P

Just a quick update. I took of the front bumper and was able to paint the grill with some krylon fusion gloss black paint. Along with that I routed up the RLS wiring and tap it into the fuse box and gm5 unit as per this thread (http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=493341&highlight=auto+light). Also I redid the wiring for the V1 hardwire and the auto dimming mirror. I will be planning on routing a few more wires as spare wires and tapped into the fuse box just in case I would like to run a few other things in the future in the headliner.

With all this I am also planning on fixing the A Pillar that is coming apart. It would seem that the windshield replacement that is current on the car wasn't installed correctly. There is extra adhesive sticking to the headliner. I'll have to address this some other time when I decide to have a oem windshield replacement.

In addition, tomorrow the concealed V1 display is coming in and I will be modding it to fit inside the rear view mirror. Oh the mods I am doing :)

Over the weekend I was able to replace the entire rear sub-frame with the one Chad provided me. As you all know I wanted to do that during the mafia meet but it was too much work to accomplish it all in one day without the proper tools. I have to say what I learned from the whole job was to do what was necessary only. We had a few set backs but manage to get everything accomplished. My rear differential boot is totally gone. I'll provide photos of it later. I am just happy that I can shift now without hearing a large clunking noise.

Well I was going to do a oil change today but instead I added a quart of oil since the oil is about 8k old. I'll probably do the next one at 12k or once the oil light comes back on. I am pretty happy now that there isn't really a major oil leak or anything and that the ZHP actually doesn't burn that much oil compared to my XI. Other then that I did happen to put on the Beyern Mesh wheels I got from Charlie. All I have to do now is get some tires to replace the current tires. Not sure if I should just go all season or just go with summer at the moment since it's getting close to fall/winter period.

As for the mods I am putting things on hold at the moment due to a trip coming up to Hawaii. It will be an amazing adventure as it's my first time. Too bad I can't drive my car around the island :(.

So last night I park my car on 1st ave knowing that there was a marathon going on. Of course in NYC the traffic police are up and moving early in the mornings. I parked there at 8pm and thought I would be good till about 10am. So by the time I went out at 8:30am it was already gone. Throughout the day I went and took the train around to meet up with a friend. Assuming that my car was impounded and I called the usual impound department. No luck in the morning. No one picked up. In the evening on my way back I called 911. They told me to call 311. Talked to that operator. They transferred me to the local precinct. From there they told me they moved my car two blocks over. I was happy and went searching for it. So about 24 hours later I had my car and no ticket! Of course I could have found it earlier but I didn't think that I would've got it out till tomorrow morning when the impound was open. So for future reference to anyone going into NYC; dial 311 for any parking information.

The lesson here is to not park in NYC. If you don't want to take public transportation, don't go to NYC, that simple! I made that mistake a few times, ending up with bent rims.

NYC is the armpit of all places with roads that they call paved. I feel everyone should sue the crap out of the city for suspension damage caused by their simple inability to fix the roads they charge us exorbitant amounts of money to cross.

I'll be curious to see how mud flaps on an e46 turn out, a quick google search didn't really show much.

Now if you had this I'm sure there would be less debate about mud flaps... They are almost a necessity on a subie :)

So recently I just put a new license plate bracket on my car since my company's car wash kept on bending the crap out of my license plate. Now I'm running the US Mill Works (http://www.usmillworks.com/bmw_front_license_plate_mount_bracket_tow_hook.htm l) bracket. Great quality and great product overall.

Also today I just updated the speedo and temperature gauge with PA Soft.

Followed this guide for speedo fix (http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?10659-DIY-Eliminate-Speedometer-Error-doityourself/page4&p=288463&highlight=code) and temperature gauge (http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?12082-How-to-reprogram-our-temp-gauge&highlight=code)fix. Thanks to Botond for the adjustments.

Look for (facelift E46):

I changed mine to:
06 0F 41 5A 64 6E 78 00 10 2D 2D
which is:

0-15 deg C is the very first line, bottom of blue

75C - first line after blue
90-100C - dead center
105C - 3/4 mark

60C - 1/4 mark
75-110C - middle

So as Charlie had posted it before today was a lot of stuff done to the "Wulf". He did end up biting Charlie on the hand though. Bad boy....

Yet he still got a treat. Just passed 130k miles. So not too bad. Still a baby and my maintenance is up to date.

I sourced out a great deal on a performance strut bar and a VIS CSL trunk. Of course the trunk was already painted red and if I were to put the trunk on my car I would also have to get mirrors and everything. So since it was red and Charlie always love CF I thought it was the right move there.

So on my way to Charlie's I post this photo to a few people and they weren't able to figure out what Charlie was getting. :P

http://i.imgur.com/6cRsewXl.jpg

To the install - Previous instructions -

Ordered my strut brace today and was getting the DIY research out of the way.

Found this installation .pdf and figured I'd post it up.

Pics will be added after the install.

Well I don't have a great DIY since it's all in the above post but here are some great photos of Charlie doing work.

http://i.imgur.com/b89pwlzl.jpg

Cutting up the battery terminal and removing a lot of the plastic.

http://i.imgur.com/USL6qqil.jpg

Hammering the remaining terminal to fold over the plastic.

http://i.imgur.com/EuhXVR4l.jpg

Followed by electrical tape glue to prevent the expose end to interfere with the body of the car.

http://i.imgur.com/y4IuCkBl.jpg

Reattached and set in backwards.

http://i.imgur.com/ezhRSURl.jpg

Drilling through the plastic so that the positive electrical cord can connect to the battery end.

http://i.imgur.com/HsKek9Ol.jpg

Put back together and push the cord through.

http://i.imgur.com/JRRNJehl.jpg

All put back together and done.

As I was leaving Charlie's I decided to connect the sprintbooster which I purchased a while back. When I was inquiring about the sprintbooster and half asleep purchasing it; it was actually a sprintbooster for a X5. The stickers however on the sprintbooster itself suggested e46 setup though. After some conversation with sprintbooster they stated that it was for a X5 eurospec. This was bought about 6 months ago and just today I decided to connect it. Well it sure feels like it works totally fine. No errors overall. Just a pulsing green faint light when the controls is set to off. I'll have to do some research to see if it will cause any errors to the car. Drove all the way back home and it felt fine. I think I even got better mileage.

Once I got home I decided to also replace my LCM faceplate with the Euro faceplate to code up rear fogs. Today was the day that push me over the edge as people started tailgating me. In addition to that I am putting a armrest delete center console since I never use it and moving some wires around for the eonon unit to access the ipod and other devices I have. Also got a bunch more parts on order and considering doing a AL bowl swap as well. Just trying to source something out now.

http://i.imgur.com/oIK5SUJ.jpg

Clean, winter setup (rims were already painted when I bought them), removed front plate to go through the car wash. USMillWorks (http://www.usmillworks.com/bmw_front_license_plate_mount_bracket_tow_hook.htm l) with quick disconnect.

Very great day overall and got a lot done :)

Don't worry about it Charlie.

Just purchase some E46 Window Regulator Repair Clips. They work great! Just make sure that the piece that goes into the clip actually fits correctly. I ordered the wrong ones the first time and it was returned.

http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/OTAxWDE2MDA=/z/KcYAAOxyVLNS2FgG/$_57.JPG

Overall satisfy that these work out really well and that I forgot to do a zip-tie reinforcement however better than purchasing a non-oem regulator. Time to get the tint off my car and have it redone sometime this summer as well.

Had a conversation with BP last night and he stated that the akg diff bushings are super noisy. So no go on poly for me.

Let me touch on this a bit.
With the AKG bushings installed, I hear a ton more gear noises as I'm shifting gears. I could make a very smooth shift but I'd still hear the gears changing and hear the driveline adjusting to it. It's quite annoying to me personally because it makes it sound like my car's in disrepair.

Of course I do blame Charrrie for introducing me to these crazy modifications and to consider it all.
