I say start up an new "interest" thread......have people sign up, to see if the Boss can justify the cost and leg work.

I'm not promising anything....but the Boss is a numbers guy. Give him some numbers.

Trying to gauge interest here.

I'm sure he's seen the posts so far. Numbers just don't appear to be there. Our first t-shirt run was 60 shirts.

We're looking at about 18 shirts and 10 hoodies right now. And that's if everyone follows through.

If we get up to 50 or so, I'm sure he'd make it happen.

That's a good question. Wasn't sure if we had some sort of logo we wanted to go with up front, or if one needed to be designed.

If there is not enough interest for a group buy you could go this route with Cafe Press where you design the logos and people buy the stuff from that site. I've did that before. It's decent quality.

Maybe we can start a design brainstorming thread? For shirts/hoodies, I'm toying with the idea of head-on shot of the ZHP sedan/coupe/convert (givin' the family choices) on the front of the shirt and a rear ZHP shot on the back. "ZHP Mafia" on the front and back license plates of course (or only on the back to showoff our front).

I'm thinking black background and either a grey outline of the car (not too obnoxious, maybe some sort of stencil-like image, maybe give more way to imagination here, so only barely outline the car...) would be nice. Near-field would be more emphasized so "ZHP Mafia" plates would stand out with the BMW roundels maybe in a real/diff color to give it some pop.

I hope I didn't insult anyone with my note. Not my intention. A member sent a note to me telling me that my message was borderline insulting. Sorry. Didn't want it to come off that way.

When I wrote that post I just didn't have a lot of time. I wanted to make sure my message was clear.

I have a little more time this morning, so let me get into the specifics of why it doesn't make a lot of sense to get into merchandising.

First, unless you really want to stick it to members, there is no profit in this stuff. After labor and material, I believe I made about $1 per shirt on the last run. That means that I did not sell shirts so that I could make money. There just isn't any. It's akin to the annual ZHP Mafia meet. Dane, when he hosts the event, will either lose a little money, break even, or come out slightly ahead (doubtful). My guess is that, when you factor in his time, it's a money loser. So, merchandising, the way I do it on this site, is not a profit generator.

Two, I don't have much time these days to design shirts, hoodies, etc. But that's not where it ends with merchandise sales.

The anatomy of it looks like this: find the cheapest, high-quality source for your merchandise>haggle on price if possible>tell members what the general pricing will be>hear member reactions to pricing>weigh whether it makes economic sense to go forward with merchandising>design>get member feedback>redesign>get member feedback>collect money>create spreadsheet to make sure orders and money are mated>place order>make changes to order if shirt company has issues with design or amounts>sign off on final order>receive order from supplier>sort orders by member name>package each order individually>take orders to post office>deal with post office>come back to site and give everyone status update>go back to spreadsheet and figure out who hasn't paid yet>send email or PM to straggler>wait for response>receive money>package order>go back to the post office for one shirt or hoodie, etc.>deal with post office>come back to site and send PM to straggler giving notice that shipment is on its way.

Profit is not the motive here, guys. So, please do not recommend that I up the prices so that I can make more money off each purchase. Do the math. Even at 50 units sold, the profit isn't worth my while.

Between my photography and my day job, I just don't have the time to engage in merchandise sales. What's more, I am not willing to turn over the merchandising efforts to anyone else. I do understand the quandary, though. Some of you, albeit a tiny fraction of this site, want merchandise.

At this point, though, I don't have the time to waste engaging in the process. When I did those previous runs, by the way, I was not working. I was unemployed. I had the time to do it. I don't have it right now.

If I ever do, I will let you know. In the meantime, feel free to keep this thread alive. Or not. It's up to you.
