I use degreaser, It usually does a good job of removing the top layer of dirt. Spray on, spray off. Dilute it a good amount though with water. You don't want so much degreasing action that you remove a bit of wax/sealant

M105 Vs. M101? Is it worth paying more to "upgrade"? Does M101 really cut better and finish better than M105?

What is your take on a microfiber pad vs. a Orange cutting pad on a PC 7424XP? What cuts "more"? Specifically the cutting pads I posted below..

What about Surbuf R series pads? I have a box of them, but I haven't really tried them..

I wanna know, how you know, when you have enough product on your pad when removing swirls?

it will all depend on the product you use.

I wanna know what your best, dark color (Imola) wax is?

just about any wax or sealant will work well. its going to be in the prep, a swirl free finish will give you the best results.
Imagine applying a wax on the left side of this m3 and one on the right side. The right side all corrected will give you the best look with any wax, if you put a $1000 wax on the left side it won't look as good as the right.

I wanna know why you have to buy wheel wax, instead of using regular wax?

wheel wax will yield a melting point, it will be able to resist more heat due to the brakes.

I wanna know what DD's best trim restore product is?

the trim restorer for what part of the trim the door seals or plastic trim?

I started using the m101 and it does cut faster and I feel its worth the increase in price.

microfiber pads I love them they do a great job cutting.

Meg's D300, Meg's M105, Meg's M101, Menzerna FG400 as well as Sonax Fine Abrasive Polish all work well with the MF Cutting Pads.

The Surbuf will give you some really nice cut, did you need that much cut?

I'm wanting to do a cut and polish on my car as its not been done since I bought the car. I currently do not own an orbital or anything of that nature so am in the market for some kind of "starter kit" that comes with everything I would need.

Also with my car being a lighter color (Titanium silver) would I really see that much of a difference regarding appearance if i were to cut and polish it?

Do I need to worry about buying a thickness reader (not sure the proper term for it) before I attempt to cut and polish to keep from going past the clear?

you won't need to worry about the measuring of the paint with an orbital polisher.

here are a few kits to look at

Griot's Swirl Remover Kit (https://detailersdomain.com/Griots-Garage-6-inch-Random-Orbital-Polisher-Swirl-Remover-Kit_p_704.html)
Griot's Meg's DA System (https://detailersdomain.com/Griots-Garage-6-inch-Random-Orbital-Polisher-with-Meguiars-Microfiber-DA-System_p_703.html)

what you want to do is

wash
clay
compound (if needed)
polish
wax or seal.

both will work nicely, if you want something more durable pick up a sealant, silvers looks great under a sealant, it will also make the metallics pop on the paint.

I use Chemical Guys Jetseal. I applied it on Oct 1st, and now it's starting to need a refresh. Given my car's 24/7 exposure to salt, gravel, rain and snow, and the fact that it rained 1h after I finished the job in October, I'm pretty satisfied with it. Sig pic not representative of product capabilities ;)

I have a few basic questions... Having a white car, any additional secrets to getting the "depth" or "wet look" you see on darker/metallic cars...?

Also, what is better about a Griots or PC buffer than my $30 orbital from Pep Boys?? Mine has lasted me close to 5 years and has done probably close to 200 wax jobs.

It's kind of hard to recommend pads & polishes to get without knowing your exact situation. I imagine you'd be doing some minor-moderate correction, so I'd say a Porter Cable would suit you. I can't see you needing anything more extreme than orange pads, so I'd say to get an array of teal, pink, black & blue pads and see which works for you the best with whichever polish you pick. (I've found that menzerna products are easiest to work with for me. Ex. SI 1500, PG1000)

I've found that opti-seal works very well too. Mine has lasted me through winter so far since about October.. which is good with all the salt & DD activities. I use Chemical Guys XXX wax too but I'm sure there are many others that are better. XXX is awesome for the how inexpensive it is.

what color is your car?

light colored cars benefit from the look of a sealant and darker color cars benefit from waxes.

as well sealants will outlast many of the waxes out there.

You can.

I only use the buffer to apply liquid wax, for paste wax I apply by hand. So it depends on what wax you have. I hear some people can use paster wax on a buffer.

I have just bought a black car for the first time. I need some help on putting together a detailing kit. I want to spend $100 or less. I will never spend 12 hours detailing the car, so i need a good wash and wax/polish that will work well with a black car. Also will need some sonax for the wheels. Hey DD, I seem to have some very stubborn grease/oil on my dash. If I clean my dash, it will be oily by the next morning. Also, when I do clean it, small black particles (oily specks of dirt) start to come off the dash, yet there are no signs of damage. What gives?

A member asked a question about having a white car and what to use for depth/gloss a page or 2 ago, but you never addressed it (actually only part of that post was addressed) :)
so I'd like to know that as well: you stated above that white/lighter color cars benefit from sealants as opposed to wax.

Without doing any intense paint correction, (Paint is near mint and has no noticeable swirls), what do you think of the following process for a Alpine white car which already has very good/new condition paint?

1. Wash with Optimum ONR
2. Klasse AIO to clean a bit more, and light polishing
3. Black Fire Crystal Seal or Optimum Opti-seal.

Hey DD, question about hard water.

So, my house has a nice portico that is always shaded and cool. I'd love to wash my car here, but we have hard water. So, I have been washing my car at my sister's house, where she has city water. Bad thing is, it's always sunny there.

If I dry my car in time to keep any water from drying, should I be OK to wash my car at my house? None of the car will be in direct sunlight at all, so I would have plenty of time to dry it. Just don't wanna do any damage.

General Question: What is the best way to combat oxidation on plastic parts? (Front and rear bumpers)

Specific Question:
I have "repaired" the oxidation on my rear bumper multiple times gut it still keeps coming back. I guess I really haven't repaired it then. Even going so far as physically removing my rear bumper (where the problem is) so I can make sure to really hit the entire area.

My process: (combined on an orange pad) Sonax Nano polish and Menzerna SI 1500. Then Menzerna SF 4500 on a blue pad. Then chemical guys Jet seal 109, then chemical guys Black Light followed with some Dodo Juice wax. This usually "fixes" it but returns after about 5-6 months

CRAP!! Not what I wanted to hear, but honestly, it is not uncommon for all of us out here in AZ. Between the incredibly hard water and the nonstop sunshine, I see this on SOOOO many cars.

Any suggestions? I'm using Chem. Guys Black on Black.

If your trim is not painted, use Pre-WOW, then follow it up with a nice layer of Black WOW. This combo works like magic, but word of warning, use it sparingly instead of put a lot on. It will run onto the paint if you use too much, and if you don't clean it up it will stain your paint.

Look at the Porsche thread that Detailers Domain did here and you can see the the effects and usage of both

the Adam's Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner (http://www.detailersdomain.com/Adams-Carpet-Upholstery-Cleaner_p_94.html) or the Sonax Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner (http://www.detailersdomain.com/Sonax-Upholstery-Carpet-Cleaner-500-ml_p_335.html) you may need to do it a few times depending on how bad it is.

sure thing I would say clean them all up with an apc.

looks like some polish and wax build up.

you can use Pre wow followed by Black Wow. (http://www.detailersdomain.com/Black-Wow_c_117.html)

Make sure you mask the area. It still a dressing so it will fade away over time.

or you can use a brush and Adam's APC (http://www.detailersdomain.com/Adams-All-Purpose-Cleaner_p_111.html) and a dressing like Adam's Super VRT (http://www.detailersdomain.com/Adams-Super-VRT_p_222.html)(again all dressings so it will fade over time. )

you can always buy new trim.

once you do a pre wash, wash, decon, clay it will be all off, I would pass on the dish detergent.

I'm still really liking the Pre-Wow. It's a tad expensive and I found that if you spray a bit on and the wipe with palm or fingers you can 'extend' it to more trim and them hit it with a small brush. Still need to try the super VRT.

My new ZHP has what appears to be brand new brake pads but unfortunately they sheds a ton of brake dust onto my wheels.
I thought about getting the pads replaced but it would be a pity to junk perfectly decent pads. I'm assuming they are OEM equivalents.

Anyway, I'm looking for a suggestion on a wheel protectant that will help prevent brake dust sticking to my wheels. I know there's a product out there called Wheel Wax and then I know Chemical Guys has a Wheel Guard... Any suggestions?

good question there really isn't anything bad for it there are products that I feel are better than others.

I believe Armour All is the only product long term that can dry rot your tires.
(this will be over time)

the key for good looking tires I believe is after every few washes you should clean the tires with a good apc or something like Stoner's Tarminator wipe all that dirt and grime off the tires for a good clean base, then apply the tire dressing to it.

another tip after you finish dressing all 4 tires go back to it and wipe off the excess, this will ensure no tire slinging.

Adam's Super VRT (https://detailersdomain.com/Adams-Super-VRT_p_222.html) is our shop favorite for a nice dark sheen

A few questions for the experts here...

What's the best way to repair paint chips, Dr. Color Chip or the Langka Blog Remover with factory touch-up paint?
If a paint chip is down to bare metal, should I prime it first before using touch-up paint?
Have brake dust seemingly embedded in rear wheels' paint. Should I claybar then use then Sonax Full Effect (or similar iron dissolver), or Full Effect then claybar?
After cleaning wheels, better to wax them with rim/wheel wax or use paint sealant on them?
After removing brake dust from wheels, is it worth polishing them before waxing? Can I polish the inside of the barrell?
When does it make sense to use a clear-coat scratch repair pen? Before polishing a scratch? After polishing (if polishing doesn't make it disappear)? Never?
Windshield has lots of tiny rock chips, only visible when driving into the setting (or rising) sun. Any way to polish or seal these? Or do glass polishes only remove water spots?
To remove hard water spots on exterior glass, better to use glass clay or glass polishing pad?

Which is the better way for treating paint chips and road rash--Dr. Color Chip (includes custom-blended touch-up paint) or Langka Blob Eliminator (use with factory touch-up paint)? Both have you apply paint first then level it afterward with a special solution that softens the semi-dry touch-up paint.

I have three cars that could use some minor paint chip repair. Dr. Color Chip does allow one to order additional touch-up paint colors separately. With Blog Eliminator you just buy the touch-up paint from the auto parts store or dealership.
