Ok, so you know how when you do the window regulators, you have to seal the vapor barrier back up? Well, apparently when I did mine it didn't stay sealed. A few months later I was getting a little moisture on the bottom of the door sill. Concerned that I would get some funky stuff growing in there, I sealed both vapor barriers all along their edges with butyl tape. Seemed like a good solution to me.

Now about a week later, though, I'm getting a faint funky smell when I first get in the car after leaving it overnight. It goes away after I drive, but I'm wondering if anyone can think of something I may have screwed up when I sealed the barrier back in. What's really weird to me is that there was no smell when it was leaking! :foottap

Edit: I thought I should add that after I sealed it again I stopped getting any moisture on the door sill when it rained/snowed/precipitated on the car.

You say a week later it smells. Do you have moisture on the door sill again?

Are you sure that the damp/smell issue is with the doors? If your car has ever been parked under any kind of trees, make sure that the sunroof drains that run down the A pillars by the windshield are not clogged. If they get clogged, they can back up and cause moisture to get into the car. May not be related, but just thought I would put that out there.

Seems odd that the smell is coming from the butyl tape repair, as I have used similar on a variety of vehicles without issue. FWIW, my E36 gets moisture down past the window glass often, but it just drains out the bottom of the door. Is the door drain itself clear? It is about 8" from the front edge of the door, down near the lower speaker, behind the weatherstripping.

Moisture sitting on the doorsill = bad vapor barriers? I get moisture almost all the time there...

Hmm, I'll check for any blockage. Just seems like a weird coincidence that it started with this after I thought I fixed it, lol.

No, always on auto. Does that leave it wide open?

Whiskey bottles and brand new cars
Oak tree, you're in my way
There's too much coke and too much smoke
Look what's going on inside you

Ooh, that smell
Can't you smell that smell?
Ooh, that smell
The smell of death surrounds you, yeah

Angel of darkness is upon you
Stuck a needle in your arm
(You, fool, you)
So take another toke, have a blow for your nose
One more drink, fool, would drown you
(Hell, yeah)

Ooh, that smell
Can't you smell that smell?
Ooh, that smell
The smell of death surrounds you

Now, they call you prince charming
Can't speak a word when you're full of 'ludes
Say you'll be alright come tomorrow
But tomorrow might not be here for you
(Yeah, you)

Ooh, that smell
Can't you smell that smell?
Ooh, that smell
The smell of death surrounds you

Aw, you, fool, you
You stick them needles
In your arm
I know, I've been there before

One little problem that confronts you
Got a monkey on your back
Just one more fix, Lord, might do the trick
One hell of a price for you to get your kicks
(Hell, yeah)

Ooh, that smell
Can't you smell that smell?
Ooh, that smell
The smell of death surrounds you

Ooh, that smell
Can't you smell that smell?
Ooh, that smell
The smell of death surrounds you

Oh, you, fool, you
Don't stick those needles
In your arm
You're just a fool
Just a fool, just a fool

[Incomprehensible]
For my love
For my love, yeah

The guitar solo in That Smell is probably one of my favorites.

Anyway, sometimes my car has a stinky mold smell. If it rains really hard, apparently a little bit of water seeps in to the carpet by way of the rear driver's side door. I just take some paper towels and put them down there. I'm guessing this is due to a bad vapor barrier.
