This - the amount spent to keep it good is staggering. lol

I'm trying to match the pic someone once posted of 257,257... Forgot which member it was. I told him I would, so that's the challenge.

Luckily you have other cars to drive so it's not a problem. I maintain this car in a way that it should have absolutely no reason to break down. I keep it at a level where I'd be able to confidently say that I can drive across the country and back with no mechanical incidents. If anything makes me question it's capability to do that, I replace the parts needed to restore that confidence.

Once I get a second car it won't be so bad, but until then, I'm gonna have to keep spending lots of money.

But at the end of the day, it's just an old, high mileage, cosmetically challenged, non-boostable slow car. Is it really worth it anymore? Maybe. It has treated me well so I'll just keep using it till I'm loaded enough to buy my F80 AND a new daily. That will be a long while, so the ZHP can take a breath. No retirement just yet!

Based on the last two posts here, where the heck do you drive? Commute to work and back?

Between the dates of 8/14 ( mileage 251,080 ) and 8/31 (mileage 252222), you put on 1142 miles. That is a little over a 2 week period.

My commute and driving here and there averages about 350 miles per week. Sometimes more or less depending if we take the other car.

I work two blocks from home. Almost all of my mileage is just personal miles, going to friends' homes, errands, or just "want to go for a drive"
I was unemployed half the year in 2015 yet still managed to put on more miles than the national average.

I used to average 30-32k a year but it has slowed down since last year.

I also put on a lot of miles traveling to tracks or events. The reunion this year is going to be well over 1000 miles round trip.

I used to put up to 200 miles a day on my car when I was a field tech. I was doing over 30k a year. The bright side was that I accumulated so much travel expense that it paid for the car...

The addition of a vacuum hose from the CCV to the back of the intake manifold to one of the capped off ports.

yes, it seems like an easy thing to try. however, you need to verify that you have no other vacuum leaks - they specify replacing the dipstick tube o-ring, which is a good idea. i did that a while back.

also, installing a PCV valve in that line from the CCV to the IM would be a good idea.

this mod is likely good for warmer climate applications. personally, i don't want any condensate going back into my oil pan, and i don't want any possibility for the CCV freezing, or the drain line from the CCV to the oil pan freezing (or clogging) - that is a recipe for oil hydrolock. so my setup works for me. ;)

but you should do this - i'm curious to see your results! :)

My M54 consumed no oil for 7500 miles. There were some concerning things in the Blackstone report, so I'm bringing my next change down to 6000 miles. Hopefully it was just all the crud from the previous owners and the heavy maintenance from February washing away.

Anyway; everyone talking about oil consumption makes me nervous, but I check my level each time I fill up the fuel tank and I haven't seen the level getting lower.. fingers crossed.

I use the BMW Twinpower 5w30 oil.

Before I changed my ccv I got the yellow light at 3500 miles, after I swapped my ccv I get it now every 1500-2000 miles... I did a little reading and many people said swapping their ccv especially to a cold weather version one increased the oil consumption...

A few mechanics I talked to about this say that oil consumption is normal for the M54... the only thing I don't understand is why it's so extreme sometimes. Quite a few think it's just because the CCV system is a POS design and I'm inclined to agree with that, given the fixes for the problem are both CCV-related.

If you have no consumption now, just you wait. lol

all engines consume some oil, especially when driven aggressively. nothing to be done about that. but i can't agree that it's 'normal' for the M54 to consume this much oil - because, really, i was using more oil, and now after my CC/PCV setup, i'm not using much at all. my driving style has not changed. my oil choice has not changed.

I used to have to place a quart once every 900 - 1000 miles on a M1 5w-30.

Yes, I have just about replaced all the oil related parts like you all have.

Now, after 2,200+ I still have not put in any oil on M1 0w-40. Knock, knock!

I still do not know using a different grade have to do with oil consumption.......Maybe you guys might have the answer or at least a theory.

you've got knocking... that's bad. ;)

oil weight is an interesting variable here. i have always run 5w40 shell rotella T6 in the ZHP, and i definitely used oil with it before going with the CC/PCV setup. it's not really any thicker than a 5w30, but your 0w40 is thinner. in theory you'd actually use more oil (blowby) with that's obviously not the case with you.

maybe there's new-yet-defective CCVs out there. i dunno. i kinda have to go back to what BP said above. ;)

I'm using Castrol Syntec 0W40 and will be doing an oil change soon. I've only had the car for a bit over a year, so it's only had 1 oil change so far. I'll see if it settles down a bit. Maybe I'll try Total 5w40 after. It seems decently priced. Most of the euro oil seems to be double the price once it's not 0w40.

wow that is very interesting. Solving or reducing our oil consumption issue could be as simple as a new vacuum tube. Can whoever is going to do this do a write up (I know its simple but I like pictures) on the size and length that worked? We probably need a new thread just for this fix so we can start comparing results anyway.

I plan on doing the o2pilot mod but not sure when. Will write a diy when I do it if someone else doesn't before me...

cool video, thanks san for finding it. it 'confirms' what i was thinking @ 9:00 in the video re: increasing vacuum.

my issue with the vacuum line addition to the CCV is that the vacuum level is unrestricted - also, what about the possibility of sucking oil up out of the pan if the bottom cyclone area of the CCV is clogged?

this is why i prefer my setup. i know where everything is going. ;)

Temporarily at least il try the o2pilot mod and see if it helps with oil consumption... if it does then I know the culprit and I will eventually get a catch can...

Guys, it is important to note that O2pilot specifically said that a new CCV system is required if you are going to implement his mod. I'm guessing that because of the mod, the new CCV system won't ever have the clogging problem again, which is probably why he says that you need a new system for everything to work as intended. If you use an old, clogged up system, you could have problems.

This is why I'm saving up for a whole new CCV system before I attempt this.

why don't you wait for san to test? then you can decide if you want to do the whole new CCV, or a catch can setup. don't spend the money twice!

not a full one, but i do have the details from the CCAF setup here:

http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?17175-combating-PCV-catch-can-freeze-ups-possible-solution&p=467211#post467211

since my entire setup is a prototype right now, i have been monitoring it, and i have decided to make some changes. i'm replacing my can with something with better baffling and inlet/outlet design (either the 42draftdesigns 'ultimate' can, or the mishimoto baffled can), and i am moving it to the drug bin - this is because it will be easier to service, and these two aforementioned cans are larger than the one i have now, and won't fit anywhere else!

once this is done i will document it a bit better. i have been thinking of making a kit, too (with CCAF option :)).

I'm curious if the ZHP has that second vacuum nipple in use as the video mentioned since our cars don't have the muffler with the flap in it.

I had my hand back there awhile ago to check for a split cap on the bigger port (it was split), and I do not remember a vacuum line on the lower port. WE don't have the exhaust valve anyway so it would make sense if it was missing.

So I read about 10 pages of that thread. O2Pilot had the mod on for at least 2 years and he did not suffer from any negative issues that he could tell (and it seems a number of other people did as well and all of their oil consumption was reduced greatly). So I guess the car doesn't care about the extra vacuum?

My CCV is like a year old so I think I am good to go. I just wish I knew about this when I was changing it so I could have put a vacuum line on before installing it.

The CCV route is just easier. I don't have to do custom mounting and routing to get it to work... everything just fits into place nicely, OE style. This is how I prefer things. Plus, I don't have to worry about emptying a can, or worrying about the can freezing or having to hook up custom heating stuff for it to work. It's just easier this way, which is the method I prefer.

If there was no other solution, I'd do a catch can, but now thankfully I don't have to.

Most I've done in my ZHP was just over 600 miles on a constant average of 66mph on a multi hour interstate run. It was amazing.

Now the car I have now is not too bad when you're easy on her too. I've gotten just over 450 miles with the S54.

Thanks Sean, that's reassuring. Carfax shows long and steady service history. So previous owners definitely took care of the car - for at least the key basic items needed for long term lasting of the car. I'll plan on doing the preventative enthusiast items - coolant overhaul, suspension Refresh, all new fluids, etc. I'm picking it up tomorrow morning with Jon Estrella for a final check.

Guy, those are some beautiful roads!

Yes they are and part of my daily commute to Huntsville, AL.

This is the heart of Tennessee whiskey country. The blackened buildings in the 5th or 6th pic are Jack Daniels barrel houses. The shot into the little town is Lynchburg, TN and the Jack Daniels Distillery can be seen in the two picks after. George Dickel Distillery is in the hills to the left after I cross the tracks and make the right at the top of the switch back. The lake crossed is Normandy and our place is on the hill across the lake on the bridge shot.

It's all a good drive except when you get behind something going slow on this two lane section. The other half not shown is all four lane and flatter with speed limits from 45-60 mph and a few lights. That moves pretty good but a little boring compared to what's pictured.

75 Miles each way and it takes me about an hour-and-a-half. It all depends on the traffic and the lights. No interstate, except last 4 miles. All the rest are state HWY's with speed limits from 45 to 60 mph and a few stop lights when I get close and in Huntsville. The really slow spot is going through lynchburg, TN at 30 and 45 mph.

Pretty much same picture. I don't remember my speed. I was so exited to see 150 on the clock and asked my wife to snap few pictures

So 93,000 real distance measurements? Isn't 90k a big (read: expensive) service interval for the S54? Valve adjustment perhaps?

Rovert

Nah. I never did that service interval stuff. I fix things as needed by sound/feeling and get preventative on parts that I know are old. Everything sounds spot on and the racecar sounds are epically strong. [emoji23]

Drove to MA 2 weeks ago and flipped 270k. Drove to MA this week and flipped 272k.

Hopefully, less travel this week, maybe I will keep my drive for work <1,000 miles per week.

Retire it from DD/frequent use duties and put a cage in it.
