Hmmmm. Not challenging you, just curious. I went back and forth with a CT inspector when I registered my gray market BMW some years back. They insisted on MPH and the FMVSS nor CT law stipulates a unit of measure (mph v. kph), further FMVSS doesn't even mandate a speedo, if memory serves, providing that you have a tach. NC doesn't seem to stipulate a unit of measure for a speedo, only that it is in good working order.

Bingo. But I’d just spent pretty good money on the first car I’d ever imported, and really didn’t feel like making a huge scene with the one man who ultimately would determine if my car would become a legal US vehicle. Certainly not over something so petty.

I’ll just buy clean Bimmian faces during the next seasonal sale. Or an M3 cluster.

If I were wealthy, I would probably be pretty bored with my FU money. In that case, I would torture (figuratively, of course) these DMV inspectors (among other petty bureaucrats) who decide to pull laws, regulations, and policies out of their ass.

I think the odo read 52,007 when bought it in late Jan and then put 700 miles that weekend driving to CT so i've put less than 2,500 miles in the 9mths i've had it. Its better looking sibling, Sky Redline.

Took delivery Dec 2006 (placed order in Aug) and has 115K on it and it's basically been gas and oil for 11yrs next month but father time its starting to take its toll on it so it's slowly just becoming a fun beater with a heater.

Yea, they are rare to see out there. It is very seldom i run into one when driving. Sky was made for 3 model years and Solstice for 4 i think but not huge production #s, particularly Red Line / GXP models.

For the 2009 model year they came out with a Solstice GXP Coupe which looks sweet but few were made before they closed shop so that will probably be a good collector's item.

This is precisely why I've always suspected EPA ratings to be overestimating city values for cars with turbo 4 cylinder engines. When I had a 3 series loaner from BMW with their little turbo 4 banger, I did one cycle hooning it like an idiot and then another driving it casually, trying to get good fuel economy. I could only muster 22 mpg city where I live.

Meanwhile the lifetime **average** of my dad’s ‘07 530i is 29.8mpg (he’s never reset it, because he doesn’t know how). EPA says it should only get 21 combined. He’s the opposite of an aggressive driver, but that’s an extra 8-9mpg above what they claim he should get.

Well if you're going for mpg, then you're foot's too heavy. Even flooring it just once can ruin your average MPG, it's that sensitive!

I had no problem averaging 24-25mpg city only in the 330i loaner I had when I was hypermiling it. Our city probably isn't as populated as yours, which may contribute to this figure. On the highway I easily got 36-37 with all the tight, ever changing-speeds of the traffic we have 'round here, and that's on an xDrive. The RWD version is rated for 34. Our highways have their fair share of inclines in varying degrees.

I did a long trip in a 328i GT loaner and got close to 40 in that, heading into NY city, which is a traffic biotch.

He must do mostly highway driving. Are your roads mostly straight and flat or are they mountainous?

Foothills of the Appalachian Mtns. It’s far from mountainous where they live, but definitely not flat. The first 6 years he had a 27 mile round trip commute in rush hour. Now that he’s retired it’s a lot more highway.

I bested the EPA’s estimate in the X3 (same N52B30 as the 530i) by about 4mpg over 4 years, and I don’t drive casually at all. I drive very little on the highway.

Speaking of covering unsightly things, I’m about to put a black Sharpie dot over the green light on my LCM. I keep the dash brightness down pretty low, but that thing isn’t controlled by the dimming rheostat. It’s bright af at night.

Green light means something is failing with in the adaptive light system.

Actually, the green light only comes on for facelift coupe/convertible models with adaptive headlights. When the lights are set to auto and they are turned on, the green light illuminates to signal that the adaptive headlights are active. A solution to Spenser's problem would be to manually control his lights using the switch instead of using Auto, at which point the green won't come on since adaptive is only active in the Auto mode.

M3's and Sedans/Tourings don't have adaptive headlights, which is why Rob and Trevor haven't seen that light.

I think a blinking green light means there's an issue with the adaptive system and that solid green signifies that it is functional, but I could be wrong on that point.

BP’s exactly right. I didn’t realize the non-adaptive cars didn’t have a green light. It’s bright, and you get a reflection on both the driver’s window, and the windshield (you can’t see the windshield reflection in the picture, but from my seating position it’s there...and annoying).

My foot was light as a feather. The problem was I drove mostly during rush hour traffic and Portland is very hilly, so it was probably the worst scenario for trying to get good MPG. That said, my ZHP gets ~19 MPG over a cycle of similar driving conditions.

The fact the power button’s symbol doesn’t maintain upright orientation when the volume is changed would drive me nuts. Confirmed, I can’t ever own a newer VW lol.

It kills me inside, but I've seen that on a lot of higher end cars as well. Not sure why, you would think ze Germans would be all over that.

That’s brilliant! You raised one smart cookie. In my 4 cars, I’ve never had the power icon printed on the button. They’ve all been blank, and just “understood.” That covers cars made in Sweden, Japan, and Germany. The various Lexuses my parents have owned since ‘92 just say “Power-Volume,” but the earlier models did have a small witness mark for indicating volume level.

Reset trip at exactly 111,000. Drive 111.1 miles, you’ll have 111,111 on the ODO, and 111.1 on the trip. If course you have to make sure you do so at 11:11am (or pm for you weirdos using 12H clocks).

I didn't think the "UNLEADED GASOLINE ONLY" writing on the fuel gauge would bother me so much until I swapped over to the euro face. lol
I feel like an idiot having things like that written on there. The "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear" writing on the US passenger mirror glass is also incredibly irritating. I like the euro stuff; designed for people who have common sense. :)

The “unleaded gasoline only” irks me to no end. If I ever get an M3 cluster I might try to find a Canadian one.

az3579
02-22-2018, 02:53 PM
I actually thought about cutting two faceplates in half and using the left side of a UK version of it and the right-side of a US version of it so I can have US MPG (vs UK Imperial) and have a fuel gauge with no writing on it, while retaining MPH. But.. can't stand the thought of mutilating perfectly good faceplates. That, and the fact that there aren't any grey-faced coupe faceplates with the ZHP raised redline, means I can't have everything I want. :(

Need to complete my retrofit with euro symbols below the faces...

So I assume when you do things like emissions or state inspections whatever it is you have in your state.... But you double check and make sure that whoever is looking at your mileage actually converted to miles from Kilometers so that it doesn't trigger issues with Carfax?

I always just tell them “oh as a heads up my odometer is in kilometers.” The shop usually writes a note and highlights it so the tech would be hard pressed to miss it.

We only have to do emissions every 2 years, no inspection. They plug into OBD2 and get all the data from there.

I think emissions is due late this year and I only put the gauge face in last year, so it'll be interesting to see what they think. The BMW dealer picked right up on the kilometer thing when I went there last.
