When I bought tires this weekend, the guy was like "if you take it anywhere else, make sure you tell them they're staggered so you don't get them mixed up."

I'm thinking "uhhhh... Ok? What place would be that dumb?" but we all know how some people are clueless...

Replaced the fronts with ceramic pads? I did the same because I hate brake dust.

Then I realized ceramics are crap for the rotors.

Uh oh. I have ceramic pads. It's what came on the car.

Should I be expecting to replace rotors next time I do pads, even though the rotors are new?

I've heard from a few people that German cars are designed to have the rotors replaced every time you replace the pads, and that the pads and rotors work with one another. While with American cars you can just resurface the rotors and you're fine. Apparently the rotor metal is softer on German cars. But you can go with replacing the rotors twice before you really need pads though. That's what I'm doing. I just happened to replace the front rotors with ceramics, which eat at our rotors... Or so I've been told.

I'm only at about 1k with my new ceramic pads so I can't say how bad they are yet.

I've heard this too, but it sounds more like people trying to sensationalize German cars, IMO. My sisters E90 has 60k, OG rotors. Other sister's E90 had rotors replaced at like 95k, and both my ZHP's had 70k miles on OG rotors. They were all still fine. :dunno

I'm not sure where it comes from, but you could realistically get 2-3 pads changes on a set of rotors, per driving habits.

I heard the same shpiel from the mechanic I take my eurovan to. My van is at 155k miles and original rotors are still straight, no vibes, or severe lip. Hence, no need to replace in my book :) He didn't like my answer but since I'm the one paying him, it's my way :thumbsup and that was 50k ago and still no problems.

I got a set of performance rotors for my Z but purely because they look bad-asssss. :D

stephenkirsh
01-10-2014, 08:27 AM
Yea I've heard that too.

My 325 had the original rotors on it at 110,000.

The first set of pads lasted to about 70,000 miles, mostly freeway driving. The second set were only at 50% when I sold the car 110,000, and that's with autocross and a lot of canyon/coastal driving.

All OEM equipment.

Silver grey coupe. You had a very clean car - spotless. Heading Sound on I-405 , I tailed you for 10 secs and flashed my lights as I exited. You took note. All I could recognize inside was the flat bill hat you were wearing.

Most people who own a VW, BMW, or Mercedes have heard this. Its rubbish. It is true the rotors don't take to turning like some other types but they are very durable and last a very long time. If you do your own brakes you can see for yourself. I think a lot of shops are used to selling European car owners anything they can. I do believe in inspecting the rotors but needlessly replacing them is silly.

sorry to go OT.

Was out running errands around town last month and spotted 4 other ZHP's in a 2-hr period... two convertibles (one black, one silver), a silver coupe and a black sedan. I must have seen at least 20 other e46's as well, with 5 or 6 being M3's. A record for me in such a short time-span!

This past weekend I spotted a gorgeous Imola ZHP vert in the parking lot outside the sporting goods store I was visiting. I asked the guys that worked there if it belonged to either of them, but it didn't. Anyone here with an IR in John's Creek, GA?

I just left one of Dane's cards on a ZHP right next to where I live!!! :hi

I wanted to park next to it, but that would require me to walk a wee bit further to my place. Probably should, when the weather is warmer. :roundel

The guy/gal is obviously an enthusiast. I'll try to take a pic, but here's a description. Maybe he/she is already on here???

TiAg Sedan 6MT ZHP
Grey Interior
Black cube trim
Clear Front Turn Signals
Aftermarket LED rear lights
Stock wheels (M135's)
UUC TSE exhaust
Carbon fiber (probably wrapped?) Rear diffuser

Spotted in Bellevue, WA Factoria area.

You may have seen my black sapphire convertible around Alpharetta....I live in Cumming and work downtown but frequently hit Alpharetta when running errands.

Just yesterday I was next to a dark grey ZHP vert on 400...it kept going north after I got off....but I wasnt in mine...I was in my Outback.

Yours may well have been the black vert I spotted that day I wrote about. That was in Alpharetta headed towards Hwy 400 (others elsewhere). Not quite sure if it was Schwartz II or Sapphire. I tried to catch up and get a look, but got trapped at a light. Mine's an OB vert.

PM sent.

That 4-ZHP day I mentioned (well, 5 including mine), one of the ZHP's was at the pumps, a black '03 sedan. I talked to the owner for 10 or 15 minutes. Discussed this site, though registrations were closed at that time. He'd had the car since '05, I believe, but I don't think he'd run across ZHPMafia before. A card would have been great!

Saw a super clean ZHP on 80W today heading back from the Nazi camp.....errrr, college bookstore. :facepalm

Silver gray sedan, Eagle Eye tails, smoked side markers, roof rack, tint, and I think BBS LM (not sure if reps at 80mph).

Passed the guy in the left lane, and he followed me. Turned on my hazards, and I saw him smile and wave. He followed me for a few miles and then we split ways with a wave.

Never saw that car before. I had my ZHPMafia.com stickers, hopefully he saw and joins up!

The race went very well. It was my first time seeing a Rolex race in person, so as you can imagine im hooked. The Turner Z4 was actually pretty quick this race. Since it was the first race of this season there were some reliability issues from quite a few different cars which made it interesting.

Was out clubbing in the financial district of San Francisco last night and my zhp was parked on the side of the road (Broadway). At some point, I came out to get some fresh air and saw my car parked on the opposite side. My first through was that I got towed; :facepalm but after a closer look I realized that it was an identical SGM twin! That's pretty rare to see. Of course, I had to go take a closer look. The interior was the same (Gray) color. All of the rubber trim and moldings were in pristine condition, which shows that it was probably garaged. The only differences that I saw was that it had proximity sensors and NAV. Should have snapped a pic but didn't have my phone on me. Still, it was nice to see.

Dad said it was the smog shop's owner's girlfriend's car. Owner has a tuned S4 making 430hp. Not bad.

Very nice Imola sedan in the Target parking lot in Manhattan Beach, unfortunately not Waldo parked. IN A TARGET PARKING LOT! Clearly they don't know what they have. Unfortunately there are too many of those out here. Either they don't know what they have or they do and it's just no biggie - they aren't enthusiasts. Parking away from other cars... so far that it's "Where's Waldo" to find your car in a pic. OR, just a good space with plenty of room.

http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?1240-E46-BMW-330-ZHP-Version-of-Where-s-Waldo

A Target parking lot is a dangerous place. Kids, moms, mini vans, shopping carts.... too much deadly ding potential. You cannot NOT Waldo park in one, you're just asking for dings.

i'm pretty sure it's just a 330 that looks a little different to them.

also, there's something i always wanted to know about this thread. why do we report sightings for stock zhps (not owned by enthusiasts)? don't sightings thread usually look for modded cars or cars (can be stock, but clearly looks to be cared for) that look like they are owned by enthusiasts? just wondering, cause i see a shitload of stock ones, i just never report it lol

i have a couple more questions lol how do you guys know it's a zhp when like you're driving by? like say there's just a full mt2 kit, you can't see inside. different wheels, different exhaust? do you guys just disregard them as non-zhps so that's why this thread seems to only have stock zhps or what if you saw a ZHP that is missing parts (like an mt2 side [ie johnrando's lol]), is that considered a fake?

sorry i'm just soooo bored, not having a car sucks so much. i can't go anywhere lol

yeah that's what i'm saying. usually to have all 3 things. it's like a stock zhp (or very lightly modded). otherwise, i think most modded (or fake ones) only have the full kit and like different wheels. like say my car. if you saw it, what would you classify it? modded 330 (ie fake) or zhp that's modded? lol

Uh. The zhp one is different than zsp?

can't tell if that's a real question. but yeah. the zsp one is just the stock ones. there's only 4 different factory sides for the coupe: stock, mt2, m3, and that one special aero that looks like a tuner version of the mt2.

Not quite a ZHP, but it follows the "old lady" format we have going.

I spotted what looked to be a Sparkling Graphite coupe... If you're on here, I was pacing you for a few miles in a pathetic white Kia Forte rental car... I flipped the interior dome light on and off a couple times to get your attention, but you were on the phone for part of the time...

Seems like SD not only had awesome cars but people with good taste :)

This is the second "sighting" he's seen of the car around Mason, he said next time he's going to leave a note to seek out the Mafia.

Spotted another 'twin' today across the st in downtown MB. Was going to leave a card, but by the time I got my act together he was getting in the car about to drive away. So I just called out across the street, 'nice car'. He kinda just looked at me and nodded 'whatever'. So guessing not an enthusiast. :)

Pardon the shot...but the composition is kind of cool in my eye. It's an Imola Vert at a local shop here in Bel Air. Looks to be in good shape aside from the driver side view mirror.

Most of BMW land down here is West of the 405 Frwy (with the exception of "West LA/Beverly Hills, etc), so not surprised you didn't see many on I-5 or at the game. Very surprised you didn't see any in Woodland Hills. Much of that 101 corridor should have a bunch.
