Did you buy that tool Shawn?
Cool...
the tool is marketed as an 'E46 subframe mount tool' which allows you to do the subframe mounts without entirely removing the subframe - so, yes, with everything still in place.
as for doing the diff mounts while the subframe is in place? the diff would have to come out, no matter what tool you're using. but that's not a big deal. but there should be room underneath their (i'm thinking of the E46 here) to use that tool on the diff mounts with the subframe on the car. you might need to remove the support brace for the driveshaft to get enough clearance on the front side... but that's easy.
and other bushings? you could totally use this tool on the car for the rear outer upper/lower control arm bushings, and the RTABs.

Tightened front end links nuts. Inspected front ball joints, engine and tranny mounts. Began prep work for LSD swap.

"ZHP is a garbage option anyway- just some cosmetic upgrades with a different cam and diff to claw back some of the performance lost fitting those hideous and heavy wheels. Any 330 with a 3.46 diff will smoke a ZHP every time. The whole Mafia thing reeks of childish behavior." - an e46f member
Old diff out today.

Nice job! How was the process so far? This is something I'd like to do next year

Not too bad but is tiring (I'm 52 next month...) and you need to have he right tools. Don Adolpho's ratcheting breaker bar that he got at Bimmerfest a few years back had been invaluable. My regular breaker just didn't do the trick. I did have to IM/phone a friend when I couldn't get the drive shaft and left axle to separate. Thanks to Vas and Rob I got them free--prying and whacking...
...and I have yet to get the knew one into its new home yet...

great stuff, shawn! i also had a minor speedbump with separating the driveshaft from the rear diff. 15min of patience with light hammer tapping and a chisel in those two grooves got it free. i wire-wheeled that end of the driveshaft and applied some anti-seize to it before it went back in. i would highly-recommend wire-wheeling every bolt as well before it goes back in!
have you used the koch tools bushing tool yet?
And anyone who wants to do this job or the front control arms, I recommend this: http://www.amazon.com/Dr-24-Ratcheti.../dp/B00AZADP3E
yes, PB Blaster is always Step 1. :)
i hope all goes well with the rest of the project! those diff bushings should come out easy peasy. did you pickup that cheap HF bearing driver set?
very cool, thanks. i need to get one of those!!
Are you replacing Guibo and CSB while you have it all apart?? Looking good Shawn!
Got the big diff bushing out. Took some doing but this Koch tool was a big help. I knew I forgot something at HF Peter. I need that one to do the smaller bushings... :facepalm
No plans to do guibo or csb.
Old bushing.

Do the small diff bushings come out from rear to front or vice versa (or either way)?
And is this the set?

yep, that's the set! they come out rear-to-front, yep.
nice work on the rear bushing. that is one mega huge bushing - mine was that rusty too. what a good feeling to get it out!
the front ones will slide out like butter compared the rear one! :cheers
Good work!! This gives me motivation to do all my bushings as well as an LSD swap sometime next summer
Thanks. So I assume this Amazon kit is similar and it's easier for me to order it than go to HF.

I'm not sure there is enough room to get this tool on the front side of the bushings....

Red box is the one for the small bushings.

Yeah but I didn't buy/rent that... :foottap :biggrin
I'm hoping I can improvise with parts of the one I have and the disks for the Amazon set.
