I used a strip of electrical tape to cover the holes and it's still holding up just fine after a year in the elements
Not to threadjack, but this guy filled in the holes with epoxy putty, sanded, and vinyl wrapped the rails. Looks pretty great, and definitely low cost.

I really like the fact it has a roof rack and sunroof delete. Looks really sleek.

Continuing from gummed up plugs and smokey exhaust, I attacked the CCV.

Found that the return line on the oildipshit was completely clogged! That means CCV wasn't working at all and would explain why it was burning oil.

Some chemicals and compressed air and it finally let go.

Overall pretty easy job. While I was there, decided to do oil filter housing gasket.

Next is to flush the engine and then pop the valve cover off and overhaul Vanos.
I can't tell you how much I missed working on M54. After working on all of those V12s where there isn't space for anything in the engine bay, this just so feels nice and breeze in comparison.
I really want to get myself a 90° ratchet like that, but can’t bring myself to buy into another brand’s battery system.
Also nice work all around. Your updates are always so detailed yet so concise.
+1 on the ratchet. 2 years ago I bought the Milwaukee version after watching 50sKid E46 DIY videos and it has become the most used tool I own. You'll find that every job that needs a socket is faster and easier with that tool

Great updates! It's always so satisfying to see the before and after.
Fun fuct - it's not Milwaukee. I wanted one for a while but with all expenses that I have, couldn't bring myself to pony up for Milwaukee yet so I bought a cheap one from eBay.

I really had low expectations but man it's unbelievable how much tool you get for the money. Nice case, battery, charger, sockets... overall quailty is really good, feels nicely built and heavy in hand. Been using it since February and I love it. Battery life is great, I rarely charger it and no problem breaking loose and undoing bolts. Makes working a lot quicker.
I also have a cheap impact wrench from Trotec and it's good for undoing wheel lug nuts and compressing shock springs but hopeless for really stuck bolts. So I'm planning to upgrade to Milwaukee M18 impact wrench next there.

Part 2 of project Cologne E46 325i is live!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGkTkImVSxg
Longest video I made to date but it should be near and dear to every E46 owner. I tried to keep it to the point, with a lot of wrenching action and entertainment.
This car did throw me a lot of curveballs but I made a lot of progress on it.
Do let me know if you managed to sit through it!
Yep, definitely more relatable, as I've never worked on anything except E36s and E46s before. Had it on my 2nd screen while I worked on my thesis.
2 main comments I had:
- Wow, that's a heck of a lot of sludge, I wonder what the oil change intervals were, and
- Geez that impact wrench really isn't great if it struggles with FCAB and reinforcement shield bolts. A few weeks ago I splurged on a 450 ft-lbs 1/2" Milwaukee gun, and boy it's such a treat to use coming from a 10+ year old corded impact driver barely pushing 50 ft-lbs.
I enjoyed this one. I watched 20 min, had dinner, then came back for the rest. Very informative, thanks for sharing. :thumbsup
Another great video! It's very satisfying to see the progression, especially the de-sludging.
I had no problem watching the whole thing in one go. It seemed like there was sufficient material for two slightly shorter videos, which would have been fine too.
I grew up watching the show New Yankee Workshop featuring master carpenter Norm Abrams (link). Not that I was doing any carpentry as a kid (or even now, for that matter), but it was educational, entertaining, and satisfying to watch experts do their thing. No phony dramas or manufactured crisis. Your channel reminds me of New Yankee Workshop shows, but with cars and humor. :thumbsup
After already being caught up on all your videos and then stumbling across your thread here I couldn't help but read all your updates with an accent. :biggrin Absolutely love the videos!
Nice! Milwaukee is on my shopping list, hopefully I'll get it soon, well worth to spend the money there.
Thanks! Finally, it's back to normal weather-wise, every summer there are like 2 weeks when it's hot as hell and I had to work on the car exactly then.
Awesome to hear, Fredo! Thanks!
Thanks, Will! I could've but I'm still experimenting and the storyline was flowing better as one video.
Thank you!
I agree; I think the storylines are important and makes it interesting to ride along for 30mins to an hour at a time.
Really enjoyed the new video, too (link for those that need it). Your narration clues me in on what you're looking at (and what I'm being shown in the video / what I'm supposed to focus on).
Congrats on the Youtube milestone! :applause2 Looking forward to your next videos.
I see we have more V12 goodness.

Sorry you could not agree on the price. Just curious ... how big was the difference between your offer and his asking price ? :dunno
Just finished watching the video. Project Dubai is looking pristine.
Lol.
Actually, not a lot, we were apart by 1k and he didn't overprice the car, I forgot to mention that in the video. But in order to do what I need to do with this car, I'd need to buy it for the price I offered otherwise, I'll be losing money on it 100%. They simply don't have the value like E31 does, at least in Germany. The guy invested a lot of money in it back in 2015 but it never ran right so he parked it. He won't come down more since he'll be losing too much money so we couldn't make it happen.
Though, the car will just degrade more as it sits. I would go for his asking price if the car had service history, no rust and I didn't have to repaint the hood. Just to sort out that hood is 1k cost here.
That thing is awesome now in comparison to what it was when I got it. I'll do a price breakdown for it and think a lot of people will be shocked how much dinero I dumped into it.
Part 3 of project Cologne, E46 Touring is up!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQyzcomasIE
It's roadworthy again and I already put about 280 miles on it when I went to pick up the rear bumper for the E38.
There's still a lot to do as I want to do some upgrades so there will be more videos!
I'm trying to get to work with Koni to upgrade the suspension but so far no luck.
Looking good ! Can't wait for part 4.
Thank you, Fredo!
Neeeeed opinions. This is how the interior of the Touring looks now.

Mighty fine but the base seats are killing me, 0 support and plain uncomfortable when driving for longer than 15 seconds.
I'm having the hardest time finding a nice set of Sport seats in gray, plenty of black ones but gray seems to be impossible to find in Germany.
Anyway, I stumbled on a set of black Nappa individual seats for the Touring. The drivers seat needs love but can be fixed relatively easily and the price is really good at 200€ ($232).

I'm thinking to snag them up, but I don't want to rip out the carpets and convert the whole interior to black. Plus, I don't mind gray.
So I'm thinking how to go about making the interior two-tone. Was thinking to do what member Phillips0417 did and make door panels two-tone (I have all of the necessary parts).
https://i.postimg.cc/t46s2m2j/J9Cncu5l.jpg
Then throw in these seats with a black armrest and call it a day. I'm just unsure if it'll look out of place, I have an image in my head that says it'll look good but wanted to hear opinions.
I think it would look nice, and worst comes to worst you’ll just swap a few more bits to black and it’ll be fine. The seats will be an upgrade that you would appreciate every single time you drive it. The non-sport seats are awful.
Do it
I think it would be fine even without the door cards. There's already several black bits on the interior. Though I prefer cloth seats. :D
+1, do eeeeet
+1. Do it. It'll make for another interesting video.
But, I'm a sucker for nappa leather, so there's my bias.
Me too. Found these locally for my wagon

Personally, I hate the flipped look with schwarz on grau I'd much rather just install the seats, be comfortable, and then when the right set of grau sport seats pop up, snag em and keep the grau interior. If I was feeling really ambitious, it would be a full black interior swap, as grau shows the dirt so badly. I had two e46 with grauleder, shit was trashed both times.
