How did you go about clearing the gunk from the lip? I'm dreading thatThey're like $45 on eBay. I bought one but haven't used it yet because of the above mentioned gunk. Leaning towards just cutting the lip off and painting the cut edge, since I've already rubbed the paint off with the tires.
You can heat it up with the heat gun. Until it gets soft. Keep feeling it and squishing it then dig it out with anything you can be creative with. I’m fortunate that my car didn’t have much of it. I remember my sedan had none to worry about but my friends 330Ci had a lot so we just cut it out slowly with a box cutter and something to dig it out. Once you get a channel through the heat gun can penetrate the sealant better. Just make sure you feel the surface of the paint because you don’t want to cook your paint off.
After you’ll want to sand it down good and clean it up, then use self etching primer that resists corrosion because the roller will crack paint on the backside.

Then I have custom made to paint code, Estoril spray paint to put two to three layers over the primer for full protection from rust.

More work on the clutch replacement. See progress thread for Sketchi if it interests you.

Found time last week to get new rubber mounted on the rears, cleaned 14 years' worth of dirt and sweat from the Alcantara steering wheel, rebuilt the DISA valve with a GAS kit (even though it looked fine anyway) and installed a GAS 1.2b coolant cap and adjusted the parking brake. Sunroof shade repair parts and new right front window regulator are on order and should arrive today. A new lower grille that Larry had purchased but never installed and was included with the sale (since the PO hadn't installed it either), is now installed.
Pulled both headlights to inspect the reflector bowls and troubleshoot a stuck right-side shutter. Typical of the ZKW's, both are burnt and cracked through. Shutter solenoid is dead but, fortunately, stuck in low-beam position. Considering a ZKW Retro-Qwik kit with Morimoto Mini D2S 4.0 projectors and Nightbreaker bulbs from Lightwerkz. $242 shipped. If anyone has a suggestion on anything different or better I'd be interested to hear their input.
Replaced the thermostat and gasket.
